Editor’s Note May 2019
A
s a kid, this was the time of year I looked forward to the most. With school almost over, we would make plans to spend our summer at the lake. Even today, there’s an energy—or a vibe, if you will—around here reminding us that we’re finally shaking off those winter blues and gearing up for time on and around the water. Included in this issue of Laker magazine, you’ll find a listing of places to dine by boat, as well as our annual guide to area marinas for all your on-the-water needs. Check them out starting on page 57. If you’re in the market for a new boat, area dealers offer insights on the latest and greatest vessels for a variety of recreational activities. The gadgets and colorful lighting are sure to catch your eye. Plus, in a nod to do-it-yourselfers everywhere, we talk to two homeowners who were willing to show off their homemade bars and discuss all the work that went into making them bragworthy. If you’re a gardening enthusiast, you might be interested in making the six-hour drive to Maryland to check out the Ladew Gardens after reading our feature that starts on page 38. Our gardening columnist promises that it’s worth the trip! Don’t forget you can stay up-to-date on all the latest happenings at www.smithmountainlake.com.
Smith Mountain Lake is home to many favorite on-water pastimes. On any given day, it’s not unusual to see anglers of all ages out on the lake trying to reel in a citation-sized striper.

YOUR ROOF Rooftop gardens can lower your energy bills while increasing biodiversity around your home Story and Photography by catrionia tudor erler
The garden shed and living roof that Richard Meyer and Martie Goebel built.
SHORELINES Home & Garden
It wasn’t easy being green 10 years ago when Richard Meyer and Martie Goebel of Annandale wanted to put a living roof on the garden shed they were building. It took months of resourceful research to find the information they needed to build the small-scale roof successfully. Today the idea for small-scale green or living roofs has taken off. Information and resources abound, making it easy for homeowners to enjoy the benefits of a beautiful living roof in their own backyard. Green or living roofs have their roots in ancient times when sod roofs were used as insulation for cottages. It was in Germany in the 1960s that the ancient concept was reintroduced. Today a large percentage of commercial buildings in Germany — and in many other European countries — have living roofs. For example, Munich
has more than 3 million square meters of green roofs, approximately the same size as Munich’s famous park known as the Englische Garten, one of the largest urban parks in the world. Stuttgart has 1.21 million square meters and Hamburg 1.25 million square meters of green roofs. In 2016, San Francisco was the first U.S. city to require that certain new buildings, including bus stop shelters, be built with green roofs.
Multifold Benefits Green roofs are beautiful, replacing a hard surface roof with a raised garden bed. Environmentally, they are wonder workers. The insulation they provide reduces energy costs, a fact that will save significantly on heating and cooling for, say, an
in-garden man cave, she shed or enclosed pavilion. While they are saving energy, the plants also are cleaning the air as they gather and absorb carbon dioxide, work their chemical magic and release it back into the air as pure oxygen. Meanwhile, the plant roots are filtering air pollution particles and sponging up rainwater. Thus, they perform remarkable stormwater management, reducing the demand on sewer systems by as much as 50 to 70 percent of annual rainfall on the roof and cleaning the water that does run off. When rainwater runs off solid surfaces, pollutants such as oil, pesticides, sediments, bacteria and other chemicals are deposited into the waterways. In highly paved urban and suburban areas, green roofs also reduce the heat

Sedum: Star Of The Green Roof In most parts of the country, the A-list stars of a shallow (extensive) green roof are the low-growing, spreading species from the genus Sedum. These succulents are drought-tolerant, withstand high temperatures, require little or no additional nutrients and are pest- and disease-resistant. Recommended species are the following (Smith Mountain Lake is in hardiness zone 7a): Sedum album (white stonecrop), mat-forming evergreen, white to pale pink flowers from May through June, Zones 3-9 S. acre (biting stonecrop), vigorous spreader, yellow flowers from June through July, Zones 4-9 S. kamtschaticum var. ellacombianum, aggressive spreader, yellow/green blooms from May through June, Zones 3-8 S. pulchellum “Michaux” (bird’s claw sedum), self-sowing annual, cymes of pinkish white flowers from May through June, Zones 6-9 S. reflexum aka S. rupestren (crooked stonecrop), blue-green leaves, clusters of yellow star flowers in summer, Zones 2-9 S. spurium coccineum (creeping sedum), robust spread and floriferousness, crimson starshaped flowers in summer, Zones 3-9 S. spurium ‘Summer Glory’, weed proof mat of rich green, scalloped foliage, pink flower clusters in mid- to late summer, Zones 5-9 (evergreen from zone 7)
island effect caused by hard surfaces such as roofs and pavements that absorb heat and re-radiate it. In contrast, the surface of a vegetated rooftop can be cooler than the air temperature, while the surface of a traditional rooftop can be as much as 80 degrees hotter. A green roof contributes to biodiversity

and benefits wildlife, attracting butterflies, birds and pollinators. Finally, while more expensive up front to build than a traditional hard-surface roof, a green roof will last longer since the materials that sun and weather can degrade are underground. A typical roof will last about 20 years; a green roof is
expected to last two to three times longer. Accountants calculate that homeowners will recoup their green roof investment within eight to 21 years.
Two Types of Living Roofs There are two kinds of living roofs: extensive systems and intensive. Extensive roof systems typically have a 6-inch deep growing medium that can support a range of shallow-rooted plants such as sedum, chives and meadow grasses. These roofs can be either modular, where the vegetation and planting medium are contained in special trays covering all or most of the roof, or non-modular, where the planting medium is a continu-

ous layer over the entire space. This is the type that most homeowners would choose for a garden structure or even the roof of their house. The installation and maintenance costs are relatively low, and the prices are dropping as more people are building them. Intensive green roofs are deeper and can sustain a complex landscape of small trees, shrubs, ponds and fountains. Buildings crowned with intensive systems must be built to support much more weight than an extensive system and are much more expensive to install. This type of system is suitable for commercial buildings and apartments.
An ordinary garden shed becomes an eye-catching feature in the garden with its succulent-covered roof.
Building Your Own Living Roof There are books and manuals on the market with detailed instructions for building a living roof. Briefly, the roof is built with a series of layers that insures the system performs properly. The layers will vary slightly depending on the builder, but typically
are as follows: 1. Roof platform. Be sure the structure can support the added weight, including the roof structure itself. 2. Roofing membrane seal. A seamless pond liner made of heavy-duty EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rub-
ber) works well. 3. Root barrier membrane. It keeps the underneath layers from being penetrated by roots. 4. Insulation barrier. Required by most building codes, despite insulation provided by plants. 5. Water retention mat. Reduces effects of drought cycles. 6. Water drainage and aeration. Layer through which water flows off the building. 7. Filter. Allows water to flow without washing away the planting medium. 8. Ultra-lightweight planting medium. Generally, this is a synthetically produced expanded clay that is less dense and more absorbent than natural minerals. 9. Plants. Usually ground covers that can thrive in shallow soils with little to no maintenance. Join the worldwide trend by incorporating a living roof in an outbuilding structure such as a garden shed or gazebo — or even on the roof of your house.
It’s time to build your dream.

In June, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will honor a major milestone in the fight for global freedom Story by anne reynolds
SHORELINES History
Only 30 minutes north of Smith Mountain Lake is a monument to one of the most crucial days in the 20th century: the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, during World War II. On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces landed more than 150,000 troops onto heavily fortified beachheads in Normandy, setting in motion the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany. The effort was truly international: though most of the troops were from Britain, Canada and the United States, they included participants from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland. Designated Operation Overlord, the invasion was the largest air, land and sea operation ever undertaken. Beginning in the predawn hours of June 6, the Allies came ashore at five landing points, codenamed Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Gold Beach, Juno Beach and Sword Beach. In the week that followed, the Allies secured the beaches and more than 300,000 additional troops, 50,000 vehicles and 100,000 tons of equipment landed at Normandy and began to move inland across Nazi

The Homefront and the Costs of War
The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford is dominated by the Overlord arch. Its height, 40 feet, 6 inches, is intended to recall the date of the invasion, June 6, 1944.
The town of Bedford is the home of the National D-Day Memorial. At the time of the war, Bedford’s population was 3,200 people, and 32 of its sons took part in the D-Day invasion. By day’s end on June 6, 1944, 19 of them, known as the “Bedford Boys,” were dead. Four more would perish during the Normandy campaign, resulting in the largest per capita loss of any community in the United States. Congress recognized in Bedford a symbol of all communities that had sacrificed its citizens to the cause of freedom in the D-Day operation, and decreed that it would be the home of the memorial to those communities’ troops.

occupied France. Though the campaign was ultimately successful, the attack was not accomplished without a grievous loss of life. The United States D-Day Memorial Foundation estimates that the Allies suffered more than 10,000 casualties in the operation, with more than 4,000 dead.

A Special Remembrance
ABOVE
In June, Bedford will open its arms to host a historic commemoration. June 6, 2019, marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day, and during the week of June 5 through 9, the memorial will serve as the centerpiece of The Final Salute, a special program designed to observe the anniversary and honor its veterans. “The 75th anniversary of D-Day is a really important milestone in not only the nation’s history but global history,” explained Angela Lynch, associate director of marketing for the National D-Day Memorial Foundation. “When you think of the sheer impact of that invasion of June 6, 1944, that one day in global history, it’s a day that was the turning point. The day that essentially saved the world, in many respects, that helped lead to the Allied victory in Europe.” Planned as the memorial’s largest event since its dedication, The Final Salute is envisioned as potentially the last large gathering of D-Day veterans from around the world. “It’s really important to be able

to honor the veterans that we still have with us in an appropriate fashion, in a way that really lets them know that, though we’re so many decades past, that we’re still appreciative, we’re still thankful and that we still understand — perhaps more so now than ever before — the enormity of that sacrifice,” Lynch said. The memorial, dedicated by President George W. Bush in 2001, hosts an average of 60,000 visitors each year. Its grounds are situated on 88 acres near the heart of Bedford, crowning a hill that offers views of fields and mountains in every direction. At its center is a 44-foot arch that overlooks a reflecting pool reminiscent of the perilous journey faced by those who fought in Normandy on that day. Gardens, architecture and artwork offer a reverent, solemn tribute to the Allied troops who came together to turn back Nazi tyranny.

two showings of “Tuesday Mourning,” an original stage play that tells the story of the Bedford Boys from the standpoint of the men who served in Normandy on that day. Finally, on June 9, the memorial will host a WWII-style field chapel service. The memorial’s website contains details such as the schedule of events and hotel information, as well as a chance to register for The Final Salute. “We do want folks, especially if they’re traveling with a veteran, to register so we know ahead of time,” Lynch said. “If they’re a Normandy veteran, we really want to get them on our list for our roll call, we want to get an accurate count of
how many veterans are with us that day.” This year is a particularly fitting time for a visit to the memorial. “We’re treating 2019 as the commemoration year,” Lynch said. “So if there are folks out there who have never been to the National D-Day Memorial or they haven’t been in a while, we have some new things going on that we’re really excited about this year. This is the year to come learn and then move forward, because we’ve got some big plans down the road.” More information, including a schedule of events for The Final Salute, is available at www.dday.org.

boat manufacturers have spent the last year working toward introducing features and functionality that will appeal to new boat buyers.
Mike Ratcliff of Conrad Brothers Marine, which has dealerships at Smith Mountain and Claytor lakes, is enthusiastic about Mercury’s new 5 horsepower propane-fueled outboard. “Designed as a sailboat kicker that runs off the same fuel used by the boat’s requisite barbecue grill, this clean-burning engine puts an end to fuel degradation issues that plague sail boaters who often go weeks or months without running their out-

boards,” Ratcliff said. For the avid angler who doesn’t want to spend a lot, Tracker Boats has refined its Heritage entry-level offering of a fully-rigged aluminum bass boat, complete with a 50 horsepower Mercury, a fish finder, a bait well and a trailer, for $10,995. And for useful tech, Ratcliff also likes Mercury’s “Vessel-View Mobile” app that uses Bluetooth technology to keep owners informed about engine performance and maintenance status. Andy Yeaman of Hughes Marine Service of Danville points to the recent return of outboard power as one of this year’s cool features. “Big outboards — Yamaha is offering 425 horsepower and 375 horsepower V8s this year — are the rage for large tri-toons, runabouts and offshore center consoles,” he said. “Outboards maximize space inside the boat and can be operated year-round with no need for winterization. Fuel efficiency and noise level have been markedly improved as well.” In addition, he said, “Yamaha has also expanded its line of jet-drive runabouts, powered by engine/drive

units that are tucked unobtrusively under the cockpit floor to create fully-accessible swim platforms and usable floor space equivalent to larger boats. And, like the outboards, the jets self-drain so no winterizing is required.” Higher-end boats feature touchscreens with accessory icons and integrated sound and light systems, which
some might liken to a disco parlor. Yeaman also likes Yamaha’s WaveRunner personal watercraft add-ons for fishing functionality and cruising comfort that can be retrofitted to models from the past couple of years. Also for fishermen, Virgil Naff of Virgil Naff Sea Doo/Yamaha and Mark Mills of Webster Marine point to the new purpose-
designed fishing edition SeaDoo with an extended aft platform, a large cooler, a fish finder, a bait-cutting board, rod holders and a bench-style seat with side-saddle foot rests. “Combined with a PWC’s shallow draft and quick-to-the-destination performance, it makes for an attractive solo fishing platform,” Naff said. Mills also noted the “highly evolved” floor plan on Bennington’s line of pontoon and tri-toon boats with plush seating and other creature comforts such as innovative

storage and mood lighting. Sea Ray models offer wakesurfers “active trim” that automatically helps heavily-ballasted boats achieve a proper running angle, and Nautique Boats is offering its Nautique Integrated Steering Assist system, a helm-controlled transom thruster that makes close-quarters maneuvering a snap. “Using either the automatic or manual control mode, inexperienced inboard skippers can negotiate complex docking challenges with confidence,” Mills said. “The boat will spin its own length, either direction, with helm or touch-screen commands.” Tim Wray, owner of Magnum Marine, who recently opened a new showroom and service center on Virginia 122 at Hales Ford Bridge, said extra features found on new boats are all the rage. “Hull and propulsion design are already so highly evolved that the changes from year to year are minimal, so engineers are focusing on creating luxurious surrounds for skipper and crew,” he said. “The fit-and-finish and cosmetics on the new boats are extremely appealing, and you have to see them firsthand to appreciate how pleasant they can make being aboard.”

Just north of Baltimore in Monkton, Maryland, is a place that will capture the imagination of any garden lover. It’s about a six-hour drive from the lake to Ladew Topiary Gardens and Manor House; it is well worth the effort of getting there. The gardens were established by socialite and huntsman Harvey S. Ladew on a 250-acre farm he bought in 1929. Ladew was born into privilege in New York City during the Gilded Age. He was taught to speak French before he spoke English and inherited his money when he was orphaned in 1912 at age of 25. His parents bequeathed him a portfolio of assets that allowed him to live well off the earnings for the rest of his life. Instead of toiling at a job, Ladew spent his life doing things he enjoyed, which included traveling, painting, foxhunting, entertaining and garden-making. The nearly 90 years of his life were lived richly, creatively and with great wit and whimsy. These last traits are reflected in his extraordinary garden. In winter, Ladew foxhunted in England, Ireland, Italy and France. He hobnobbed with notable figures of his era,

including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), Richard Rogers, Moss Hart, Noel Coward, Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Edna Ferber, Colette, Somerset Maugham and Terence Rattigan. He was a capable artist and famous for his lavish parties and fine sense of humor. But the accomplishment that makes his fascinating life worth remembering is the garden he created at his home, Pleasant Valley Farm, in Monkton. Out of the fields and pastures that came up to the house, he carved out 22 acres for his garden. A novice in garden planning, he drew upon what he had observed in the great gardens of Europe, creating a garden informed by the influences of Gertrude Jekyll and other early 20th century English gardeners, as well as by the garden masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.
The art of topiary was virtually unknown in the United States before Ladew began creating them. Once, he was stopped by a woman who said to him, “I saw your lovely garden in Maryland. Those wonderful hedges and all that beautiful Tipperary.” To provide for long vistas, he designed two cross axes. At the intersection, in the center of the Great Bowl, is Ladew’s oval swimming pool. Fifteen garden rooms, each with a different theme, are arranged off the axes. There is the yellow garden featuring plants with golden foliage, a white garden dazzling for its purity and an iris garden overlooked from an Italianate balcony. Ladew dubbed his apple orchard his “Garden of Eden,” and added a statue of Adam and Eve in which Eve offers an apple to Adam who already has two hidden in his hand behind his back. The “sculpture” garden is packed with topiaries of mythical birds atop spiralclipped pedestals, fanciful lyres, Winston Churchill’s bowler hat and another of Churchill’s “V” for victory sign. The terrace garden is hedged with hemlock and yew embellished with pruned garlands and pyramid finials. Another hedge features a flock of swans swimming along the top. The art of topiary was virtually unknown in the United States before Ladew began creating them. He loved to tell the story about the time he was stopped by a woman who said to him, “I saw your lovely garden in

Maryland. Those wonderful hedges and all that beautiful Tipperary.” “It was hard to keep from laughing,” he said, “and I thought I would never again hear anything as funny about my garden, but when I reached Palm Beach, a man said to me, ‘Mr. Ladew, your name came up the other night at a dinner party. I understand you are the authority on Utopia.’” Ladew’s fascination with topiary began when he was foxhunting in England and came across a hedge with a pack of topiary hounds running across the top after a fox. Vowing to create the scene in his own garden, he went further, creating a tableau that features three mounted horses, one jumping over a gate in a hedge, chasing after a pack of hounds that are in hot pursuit of the fox out in front. This scene has become the iconic symbol of Ladew Topiary Gardens. When the Garden Club of America awarded Ladew its Distinguished Achievement Award in 1964, they praised
him for “creating and maintaining the most outstanding topiary garden in the country without professional help.” In her nomination letter Sibyl Brown wrote, “Mr. Ladew has through the years shaped and clipped the topiary himself.” She went on to describe and praise the many garden rooms: “The proof of the excellence of these gardens. …Is that they all communicate with each other harmoniously.” Before Ladew died at age 89 in July 1976, he established a nonprofit organization he called The Ladew Topiary Gardens Inc. to guarantee Pleasant Valley Farm’s survival into perpetuity. In his book “The Life & Gardens of Harvey Ladew,” Christopher Weeks wrote, “When he started to think about his garden’s future, he charted new territory, for no endowed gardens — as opposed to gardens coincidental to historic houses — existed in Maryland at the time: in 1967, for example, Annapolis’ now famed [18th century] Paca Garden was a parking lot. Even the concept of garden history as a
discipline was, at most, as dormant as a tulip bulb in February: England’s pioneering Garden History Society dates from 1965; the Garden Conservancy, dedicated to preserving historically important American examples of the horticulture arts, dates from 1990. Ladew first opened his garden to the public in 1968 at the time that he was setting up his foundation. He wanted to make sure that the public would indeed be interested in paying to come to see it. He would give the proceeds for this venture to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Writing to the organizers in January of that year, Ladew suggested that they open the gardens on weekends in May when the irises were in bloom. “That is when my garden looks best,” he explained. Nowadays, the house, garden and grounds are open to the public seven days a week between April 1 and Oct. 31. And yes, the public wants to visit the garden. As Ladew himself was wont to say, it’s all “perfectly delightful.”

everage stations don’t have to be fancy to be functional, but when they’ve been created in some unique way by homeowners themselves, they become real conversation hubs. When Jon and Jean Wisnieski built their home in Waverly in 2011, they left the lake level unfinished as a project for Jon to tackle as time allowed. Intending to create an inviting lake level bar near the foot of the stairs, they had plumbing and electrical feeds roughed in during construction. The design for the contemporary bar was Jon’s, following Jean’s clear parameter: “Whatever you want as long as it goes with the decor in the rest of the rec room.” Jon played it safe and faced the bar with the same com-
bination of stacked veneer stone and mint-green subway tile he had used for the room’s fireplace surround. Jean also specified chemically-etched, leather-looking granite for the countertops, something she noticed at a home that was on the SML Charity Home Tour a couple years earlier. The first step was to lay out the dimensions on the floor with painter’s tape so the couple could evaluate the placement of a full-sized refrigerator, a bar sink and a dishwasher. With that defined, Jon spent about six months laboring on the project. While he had an established woodshop, Jon had never built anything this substantial before. “I looked online to see how it was done,” Jon recalled. “Cabinetry is basically just building boxes — and being sure to measure the diagonals to get them perfectly square.” He purchased a Kreg Jig to guide the drilling of screw holes for the butt joints, ordered cabinet doors and fin-

ished them with a stain and wash for a pickled gray look that matched bookshelves he had built across the room. The cabinetry plywood and red oak framing material came from a home improvement store. “You can buy in bulk and return any you don’t need,” Jon said. He purchased granite from a store in Eden, North Carolina. “They create a pattern from foam board, then deliver the granite pre-cut, with finished edges,” he added. The hardest step for Jon was installing the rails for cabinet drawers and roll-out shelves. “Next time, I’d mount those before assembling the boxes,” he said. LED strip lighting was recessed into routed channels under the bar top for indirect illumination. The plugin strips can be commanded to dim, flash and change colors with a remote. The Wisnieskis’ bar is frequently used for serving drinks and hors d’oeuvres, but it was subjected to an unplanned stress test in 2015 when daughter Laura’s wedding reception moved indoors during rainfall associated with Hurricane Joaquin, and 100 displaced guests suddenly gathered in the home for a celebration. “It was able to handle that crowd,” Jean recalled, “so we knew then we had gotten everything right.” The ambitious bar and wine room in Rick and Pam McKown’s Park Place home features a more traditional design. “I was after a tavern-style, country pub ambiance,” Rick said. Completed in 2016 as one of the final steps in the couple’s past 13 years of self-finishing a 9,000-square-foot home, the bar stands at one end of a large game room, adjacent to a tiered home theater. “I love the challenge of creating things from scratch,” said Rick, a retired mechanical engineer. Part of the project included a faux-painted bar-toceiling black-marble column that conceals a structural pillar. Rick had practiced the painting technique on a column on the home’s upper level years earlier, and the result definitely fools the eye. The bar dimensions already had been figured out when Rick installed the game room’s flooring months earlier and created a defining border line in the tile that follows the bar’s 45-degree plus 45-degree bend — nearly 16 feet in all and room for six bar chairs. Like Jon, Rick built his own cabinetry boxes, using framing lumber and hardwood maple, stained a rich cherry, for the visible panels and doors. He routed the fluted trim pieces out of maple as well. An iron footrest is attached to the bar front. “Purchased online,” Rick said, “and definitely among the materials you measure several times before cutting.” In addition, there’s an authentic, rounded elbow rail that Rick sanded and finished with silky smooth lacquer. Other exquisite details of the bar include corbels at the tops of the columns, copper-colored ceiling panels,
54

indirect LED lighting and hefty multi-layered crown moldings. Rick also discovered that mounting drawer railings before the countertop was installed would have been much easier. “I love detail work, but trying to squeeze tools and body parts into small cabinets is not fun,” he said. Rick’s passion for detail is evident in the wine room that is tucked away behind the bar. The cellar door itself is a work of art — an arched plywood core faced with Brazilian cherry flooring that was left over from the home’s main level — and secures silently with a magnetic locking mechanism that is released by a hidden switch. Inside, Rick has crafted tiers of individual bottle storage racks, jig constructed of interlocked plywood strips fronted with iron-on veneer that creates a solid-wood illusion. There are multi-bottle bins and shelving for cases that features room for more than 500 bottles. Capping the climate-controlled room, at about 11 feet, is a lattice drop ceiling woven with real grape vines plus imitation leaves and fruit. Wall surfaces mimic rust-brown Tuscan-style stucco; the relief pattern was created by troweling a heavy layer of spackling compound over wallboard and faux-finishing with paint and glazing. While most of the creativity and labor for this project belongs to Rick, Pam also pitched in, along with her cousin, Norman, a contractor by trade, who helped with framing in the area. “It’s a labor of love,” Rick said. “I get self-satisfaction from creating something to be proud of.” Pam added, “This has become a spot for friends to congregate — a reason to enjoy our lake level yearround.”
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT
Tavern-style touches, such as this Jagermeister growler, round out the finishes at the McKown bar. A wine cellar is accessible via a stunning cellar door (at right). Copper-colored ceiling panels make the room cozy. The bar countertop in the Wisnieski home boasts a leatherfinished look.

Moneta S A REFLECTION OF THE REGION’S FORTUNES Story by ANNE REYNOLDS Photographs courtesy of pete craghead
mith mountain lake’s branches reach far into Franklin, Bedford and Pittsylvania counties. The region that surrounds the rivers and creeks that feed the lake is dappled with communities whose stories stretch back for centuries. Though the lake has been a feature of southwest Virginia for little more than 50 years, the area was first populated with European settlers in the early 1700s. This long history is filled with change. Perhaps no community around the lake embodies the waves of fortune like Moneta. Today the name calls to mind a modern shopping district perched on the side of Virginia 122 between the Roanoke River and Bedford. In truth, Moneta’s long past includes farming, industry and of course a brush with Hollywood in the 1990s. The community that became Moneta was first settled in 1858, though records of churches in the area go back to the late 1700s. The seeds of the town were sown by James, John and George Lipscomb’s purchase of a tract of creekside land where their father, Jordan, operated a tannery.
Across the road, John and Bruce Thaxton built a log house and later, a store. By 1860, a one-room schoolhouse and a church joined the community. In the early 1880s, a post office was designated with John Thaxton as its postmaster. It is Thaxton’s wife, Mildred Frances Board Thaxton, who is credited with giving Moneta its name. Though one source suggests that the name reflects a Native American origin, Moneton, others claim that the well-read Mrs. Thaxton named the town Moneta after a character in John Keats’s poem, “The Fall of Hyperion: A Dream.” In the poem, Moneta is a mysterious spiritual figure who guides the narrator on a journey full of challenges. North of downtown, Martintown was established in 1892. It was formed from 182 acres of land that were left to six former enslaved families by Caroline Hancock Martin. Each family received 30 acres. During the Great Depression, however, the residents moved to cities to find work, and the community fell away.

Moneta Restorant was owned by Nobe Martin (second from right) and his family. Moneta High School was on the site of what is now Moneta Volunteer Fire Department. It was torn down in 1935 The first train depot in Moneta was built along the tracks.

The development of the railroads brought a significant economic lift to the town in the early 1900s. The Virginian Railway was built to connect the coalfields in Deepwater, West Virginia, to the ports of Norfolk, and construction of the rail line offered high wages and steady work. Passenger service on the line from Roanoke to Norfolk began in 1909 (one legend suggests that humorist Mark Twain was aboard, hired as a goodwill ambassador by the railroad) and continued until 1956, though the coal-carrying trains continued beyond the passenger rail’s demise. As the U.S. population grew in the 1920s, demand for agricultural products boosted prices and incomes for farmers, and the town benefitted from the prosperity. From the 1920s and into the 1960s, the town included a milk depot, a new car dealer, restaurants, farm supplies and a

again in the late 1960s, as the arrival of Smith Mountain Lake began to be felt on its surrounding counties. Located on Virginia 122, a direct route to the new attraction, Moneta benefited from a marked increase in traffic as the lake drew vacationers and visitors in the 1970s and into the 1990s. However, the growing crowds needed more services and larger stores than were available within the small community. It became a novelty town of gift shops, whose fortunes ebbed and flowed with the seasonal traffic to the lake. In 1990, the town’s picturesque buildings offered an attractive backdrop for the Touchstone Pictures film “What About Bob?,” which added a showbiz buzz and stories of celebrity sightings throughout the filming.
Moneta benefited from a marked increase in traffic as the lake drew vacationers.
lumber mill. During the 1960s, efforts to attract business brought the Moneta Dress Factory to town. The factory’s opening, a gala affair that included Gov. Mills Godwin, drew a protest from the Ku Klux Klan, who opposed the governor’s stance on segregation. Though the 40 to 50 hooded Klansman burned a cross as part of their demonstration, they failed to prevent a representative of the factory from presenting Mrs. Katherine Godwin with the first dress off the line. A history of Bedford County, written in 1949, described Moneta as “a thriving village of 400 inhabitants … [with] many successful business establishments, a splendid high school, the post office from which rural routes serve a large area and many modern residences. It is also the center of prosperous farmers, canners, dairymen and others.” This growth leapt
The railroad, which had brought prosperity to Moneta in the early part of the 20th century, struck a decisive blow to its continued viability in the 21st. The Virginia Railroad merged with Norfolk & Western (now Norfolk Southern) Railroad in 1959. Although passenger service had ended in the 1950s, high speed coal trains continued to cross Virginia 122 in the heart of Moneta’s downtown, resulting in hazardous conditions, as well as snarled traffic for both lake visitors and emergency vehicles that were stopped as the trains crossed. In 1997, the Virginia Department of Transportation completed the Virginia 122 bypass that is familiar today, and in 2000, closed the automobile crossing at Old Moneta Road. Jersey barriers on each side of the tracks split Moneta’s original downtown. Today, a modern Downtown Moneta development is located near the bypass. It offers apartments, homes, shopping and a site for local events. Sharing in the recovery from the economic downturn of the early 2000s, it also offers a 21st century take on a small town, with a nod to the community that serves as its model.

Guns Of The Lost Canyon Mike Hundley, a Franklin County native, has no plans to slow down in writing his popular westerns Guns Of The Lost Canyon: Blood In Lawless Creek By Mike Hundley Heaven and Hell Western Publishing. 246 pages. Paperback. $8.99
J
ust after he’d written his first western, “Gunsight Justice,” Mike Hundley wasn’t sure he had another novel in him. As it turns out, he was wrong. Since his initial release more than two years ago, Hundley has written three additional westerns with another one in the works. His books include “Guns of the Lost Canyon,” a follow-up to “Gunsight Justice,” (part of the Peacemaker Trail series) and “Texas Lawman — Will Justice” and “Gunfights at the Boomtown Saloon,” which are part of the Texas Lawman Series.

The King becomes a fascinating symbol for the U.S. in World War II Elvis’s Army: Cold War GIs and the Atomic Battlefield By Brian McAllister Linn Harvard University Press. 464 pages. Hardback. $29.95

n the large field of history, there are popular books, and then there are scholarly books. This one by professor Brian McAllister Linn of Texas A&M is of the latter. According to a story posted on Texas A&M’s website, Linn said in 2014, “My next book is about how the U.S. Army tried to ‘transform’ itself to meet the challenges of the atomic bomb. It is also about the American experiment with a large peacetime, short-service citizen-soldier force and conscription. The idea that someone as famous and controversial as Elvis could be drafted and become a symbol of the U.S. military and the nation’s commit-

ment to the defense of the free world fascinates me.” And that, with a few illuminating comments, fairly well sums up what remains of this review. The author of four previous volumes on military history, Linn has probed deeply into the psyche both of the Army’s top leadership and the national consciousness, buttressing his conclusions not with a formal bibliography, but 81 pages of chapter notes, 19 photos and illustrations and six necessary pages of government abbreviations and acronyms. The book outlines, both in broad brushstrokes and minute detail, the steps taken to redefine and reorganize the Army into a force capable of existing and prevailing in the Atomic Age. From the end of World War II to the Army’s fateful entry into Vietnam, it was a trial of monumental proportions. Linn’s use of Elvis Presley’s exemplary military service is well chosen, for that young man quietly accepted the call to duty, raised his hand and took the oath, wore the uniform and performed soldierly tasks

Hundley, a Franklin County native and Vietnam veteran, insists it’s not him doing the writing. “The characters are the ones writing the story,” he said. Before “Gunsight Justice,” the former telecommunications sales executive had never written anything other than letters and business correspondence. His friend, Galen Pedersen, urged him to try his hand at fiction writing. Recently, when he spoke with Pedersen by phone, Hundley recalled joking with his friend: “I said to him, ‘This is all your damn fault.’” “Gunsight Justice” is currently ranked in the top 100 westerns on Amazon, and for a week, Hundley was listed as the No. 1 best-selling author in Australia. Since its release in August 2016, the book continues to receive positive ratings and comments. “This was a really good story that holds all the action and adventure that you can get in one story,” John Shearer wrote on Amazon in early April. “The story is about what to do to make things right and to what end some will go.”
Set in the post-Civil War era, the story centers around the Garrison family as they make their way from Virginia to Colorado. In “Guns of the Lost Canyon,” patriarch and Colorado rancher Will Garrison is faced with an enormous bill for current and back taxes on the property he acquired. Strapped for cash, the solution of building a silver mine leads to other challenges and hardships. Good Reads reviewer Dick Rowland gave the sequel five out of five stars. “You will be pleased with the story of the west, silver mine, horses and the people who help shape the west,” Rowland wrote. “Mike, please continue to write these stories and share your insight of the west.” As of now, Hundley has no plans to stop. “It’s an awesome experience when I’m writing,” he said. While some writers create outlines and flowcharts to find out what happens next in their plots, Hundley’s methodology is different. “I’m going fishing to see what the hell’s going to happen next,” he
said with a laugh. “I pride myself on being untrained as a writer and instead have a ‘let-it-happen’ attitude that allows me to write in a free and unhinged passion.” Hundley also credits his upbringing on a tobacco farm in Snow Creek for the courage to start writing novels late in life. “I’m not afraid to write it, and readers obviously like it,” he said. “I think it’s the passion and the stories written from the heart.” Looking forward, Hundley, who turns 77 this month, is planning his third western in the Peacemaker Trail series and also hopes to host some book signings similar to one he held in the Snow Creek community, where he donated the proceeds of his book sales to the local rescue squad. When asked what Hundley’s advice would be to budding authors, he didn’t hesitate to offer an answer. “Don’t wait until you’re 74 to write your first book,” he said. “Flip the laptop open and let the characters go.”
as well as he had cavorted on the stage before adoring teenyboppers. Two years and three stripes later, he would reprise that service in Hollywood’s “G.I. Blues.” He was practically the symbol of an age. Not so simple and straightforward were the extraordinary convolutions of the newly created Department of the Army, as both civilian and military leaders strove, often unsuccessfully and under agonizing budget constraints, to create an Army fit to survive and win on the atomic battlefield. They also sought to provide a mass of untrained and often poorly moti-
vated conscripts with enough dedicated and experienced officers and noncoms to meet situations beyond imagination only 10 years before. Yet they succeeded in this regard: no nuclear exchanges with the prime adversary, the Soviet Union. Even the Korean conflict was strictly conventional. Thus, after years of unremitting effort, the all-volunteer force that many call “the best Army this or any other nation has ever fielded” has come to face new enemies, new challenges with, if not sublime confidence, at least sturdy resolu-
tion. In considering the long hard period of transformation, one ponders the profound commentary of Elvis Presley’s first sergeant: “By submitting to the draft and entering the Army as an ordinary private, Elvis accepted the discipline of an institution that had come to play a vital role in transforming men from assorted backgrounds into soldiers and Americans.” A condensed version of those lines might stand as a pretty good inscription on Elvis’s tombstone.

keys.” “No, you said, ‘Honey, I have your keys.’” “What? Why would I have your keys?” “That’s what I said! ‘Why do you have my keys?’” “This is silly. I have a hard enough time keeping up with my own keys. Where did you put your keys?” “I don’t know, I’m going to be late. Can you help me find my keys?” “Sure. By the way, I asked you to remind me to do something today — what was that?” “I told you to write it down.” “It was one thing! You needed to remind me to do one thing!” “Look, we’ll get back to the one thing in a minute. Can we first find my keys?” “Pockets?” “Nope.”

“Kitchen table?” Hubs peers over to the kitchen table. “Nope.” “Under the newspaper on the kitchen table?” Hubs saunters to the table, lifts up the newspaper and waves the sports section over his head like a manic school crossing guard directing traffic at 7 a.m. “Nope.” “OK, where were you in the house before you asked for help finding your keys?” “Sam’s Club!” “You were at Sam’s Club?” “No, the thing that I was supposed to remember to tell you was that while you’re in Roanoke today you should also stop by Sam’s Club. You said we need toilet paper.” “That’s right! And kitty litter, we definitely need kitty litter. You want me to also get steaks? We can grill this weekend.” “Sure. Can you also pick me up some shaving cream? You better write this down.”

“Good point. Let me find a pen and a piece of paper.” “Pens are in the kitchen drawer.” “I know that.” “Oh yeah, well do you know where my keys are?” “So, at Sam’s Club today I need to pick up kitty litter, steaks, and shaving cream. Wasn’t there something else?” “Dang, what was that?” “Hmm, I think we need paper towels. We could use some new washcloths, too.” “Don’t get white ones, you always get mad at me when the white ones get dirty.” “I do not get mad at you about dirty white washcloths.” “Sure you don’t.” That sarcastic eye roll from Hubs is going to get him killed some day. “Kitty litter, steaks, shaving cream, paper towels and washcloths. Something is missing…” “Toilet paper!” “Yes, that’s it! Thank you!” “Hey, I still need my keys. I swear the little people hide my stuff.” “Well, last time you were looking for them they were hanging in the keyhole of the front door.” “Oh yeah.” Hubs walks to the front door. “There they are! Thanks, Babe.” No one ever warns you that once you’ve reached a certain age and after you’ve been together for a decade or more, couples often display signs of single-brain-itis. Between the two of you, you might have one fully functioning brain. Being able to remember anything becomes a team sport. On this upcoming Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember all those who have sacrificed for our country and offer up a solemn thank you for those who have died in service and their families. Each Memorial Day I’m reminded to be forever grateful that my soldier came home. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties.
