Editor’s Note altor W hile we never could have imagined a year quite like this one, our community is resilient and as strong as ever. As many lakearea businesses hunkered down and prepared for the worst, others reinvented themselves, making lemonade out of lemons. Starting on page 34, find out how one popular lake restaurant has answered the call of helping those in our community. As we approach the giftgiving season, here’s an idea — avoid the crowds and shop locally. To help with your planning, check out our annual gift guide starting on page 58. If you’re not quite in the holiday spirit, don’t worry! In this issue, we talk to two couples about their special traditions in decorating the halls of their homes. Plus, our gardening columnist offers suggestions on winter foliage to give your gardens some pop. If you have questions or story ideas, send them to us. We’d love to hear from you! on’t write off the garden just because we’re nearing the winter months. There are a host of plants that can provide color and other interest in the landscape, even on the darkest, coldest winter days. Read on for some excellent suggestions for plants that provide evergreen interest, pretty dried grasses, eye-catching silhouettes, colorful berries or flowers, or fascinating bark patterns often hidden in summer by foliage. Once you’ve identified your winter-interest plants, think carefully about where they’ll go in the garden. We spend more time indoors during cold periods compared to the warmer months. To fully enjoy your winter garden, plant it where you can see it through the window. Here are some suggestions for in plants that will bring joy and beauty to the winter months.
A tracery of snow on bare branches makes a pretty winter picture.
Evergreen Trees Evergreen trees are an obvious choice for maintaining color in the cold-season garden, and there are a host of options, including golden or yellow-tipped conifers that bring the light of sun-

shine to the drabbest winter day. A member of the pine family, Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) hales from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. These stately trees have a distinctive form with swooping branches draped with foliage. Look for cultivars such as “Argentea” (pale silvery bluish gray), “Aurea” (yellowish needles), “Fastigiata” (upright form), “Glauca” (blue) and “Glauca Pendula” (blue weeping form). Another cedar, Cedrus deodora, is a superb specimen tree with graceful habit, useful as a screen. It has a pyramidal form when young, maturing to flat-topped trees with broad-spreading horizontal branching. Deodar cedar is perhaps the most pendulous of the true cedars, with drooping branches. Lower branches typically remain on the tree as it ages, often touching the ground. This is a tree that typically matures to 40 feet to 50 feet tall in its first 25 years. Cryptomeria is a genus of plants with selections that grow to statuesque proportions (check out C. japonica ‘Yoshino’, a slender, pyramidal, evergreen conifer with tiered horizontal branching) to smallmounded species such as C. ‘Globosa Nana’ that make great shrub accent plants or even hedges. Cryptomeria comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors; visit a local nursery to check out the selection. Certain species of false cypress (Chamaecyparis) are superb in the garden, with different sizes and forms to fit into a wide variety of garden designs. For a splash of sunshine in a winter garden, look for golden hybrids such as C. pisifera ‘Sungold’ (large, pyramidal form) and Hinoki cypress (C. obtuse ‘Crippsii’), which is a small, loosely conical tree with golden, fern-like foliage. It is considered one of the most elegant small golden conifers and an excellent garden specimen tree. There is a wide selection of threadleaf false cypress (C. pisifera), including dwarf varieties, that form ground-hugging, mop-like mounds, known as “mop heads.” There’s nothing “false” about the ‘Goshiki’ false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus) hybrid. In Japanese, goshiki means five colors. The new leaves emerge red, maturing to green with spots of creamy white, gray-green and yellow-green. This lovely evergreen selection makes a great accent plant or hedge. Use it to brighten a shady corner, either in ground or in a pot. The variegated foliage pops against a dark background.
Ornamental Grasses Ornamental grasses bloom in fall and remain beautiful architectural elements in a winter garden. There is a wide selection of hardy perennial variet-

Gardening tenuissima) can become invasive. However it is so pretty in the landscape with its pleasing nicely proportions and delicate grass with hair-like leaves that wave in wind, it’s worth the trouble to keep it under control. Among the fountain grasses, Lakescapes Nursery staff recommends the dwarf Pennisetum messiacum ‘Red Bunny Tails’. A pest- and disease-free grass, it has an upright form and burgundy-tinged green leaves. From spring through summer rabbittail-like, reddish-colored flower plumes rise above the attractive foliage. Plant them in the ground or in containers where you can see the flowers when they’re back lit. They glow when the sun shines through them.
Winter Silhouettes The combination of two fragrant witch hazels, Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Primavera’ with its yellow blossoms and ‘Diane’ with coppery red flowers, makes a striking scene in the winter landscape.

ies to choose from ranging in size from low-growing plants good for edging to tall, stately clumps reaching 10 to 15 feet tall. Avoid Miscanthis sinensis (maiden grass). Formerly considered the go-to ornamental grass, it is now recognized as an invasive grass (it will reseed everywhere) and is seriously overused. Instead consider some of the new sedge and rush varieties (Carex and Juncus), fountain grass (Pennisetum), and the beautiful feather grass (Stipa tenuissima). These are graceful grasses that lend themselves to many landscape uses, including containers, and come in a delightful range of size, foliage colors and textures. The sedge Carex flagellifera ‘Toffee Twist’ is an excellent variety with its elegant, trailing habit and mahogany colored foliage accented with green and red hues. It’s noninvasive and low maintenance. Or consider Carex testacea ‘Orange Sedge’. It is an evergreen sedge with a clumping habit. The foliage is olive green highlighted with orange-brown coloration. Those highlights turn even more orange in cold weather. In the corkscrew rush family, a unique dwarf hybrid (8 to 14 inches tall) Juncus effusus ‘Curly Wurly’ has taken the horticulture world by storm. It is prized for its glossy green, pencil-thin stems that spiral outward from the clump in all directions. It is a low-maintenance, deer-resistant accent plant that prefers a moist environment in partial shade. Juncus ‘Quartz Creek’ is a clumping selection with a vertical habit and stiff, erect, dark green leaves. In summer it produces small brown flowers. Use it in containers or plant it at the water’s edge. A slow spreader, ‘Quartz Creek’ eventually will form dense colonies in full sun or light shade. Growing easily from seed, feather grass (Stipa

In the realm of deciduous plants, choose ones with that have fascinating silhouettes once the leaves have dropped. The dissectum group of Japanese maples are a wonderful choice for twisty shapes, as are quince trees (Cydonia oblonga) and the contorted willow (Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’). Plant willows near the water in a spot where they can grow to their full natural size. On a gray day the black branches of these contorted trees with alluring silhouettes display a dynamic pattern of twisting movement, and when the branches are outlined with snow against a clear blue winter, they are magnificent. Other possibilities for eye-catching winter silhouettes are Harry Lauder’s walking stick (Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’), a deciduous shrub with twisted, spiraling branches and the corkscrew willow (Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’ or ‘Pendula’), which are the weeping forms. Plant either near the water where it can grow to full size without obstructing your view.
Berried Treasures are a delight to both wildlife and people in a winter landscape. Among the treasures that are worth growing in the garden are viburnum, winterberry (Gaultheria procumbens), our native deciduous hollies and beautyberry. Although for most Viburnum species the berries turn black by the end of summer or are eaten by the birds, V. dilatatum ‘Erie’ is a notable exception. A round shrub that grows 6 feet tall by 10 feet high, it produces a generous display of red fruit that turns coral after frost, growing pinker through the winter. Another great option is the tea viburnum

(Viburnum setigerum). It is considered one of the most prolific berry producers in the genus. It is a rounded, multistemmed, upright-spreading, deciduous shrub that typically grows to 8 feet to 12 feet tall and 5 feet to 8 feet wide. In April and May, you’ll enjoy the small, flat-topped clusters of white flowers. By fall the flowers have set their bright red berries that are so abundant the branch stems often arch downward from the weight. The common name winterberry says it all. Our native deciduous holly Ilex verticillata produces showy berries that persist throughout the winter and often into early spring. They show off best in massed planting in sunny locations. Use them as foundation color or in the back of a border since they are less interesting when the berries aren’t in season. For pollination, you’ll need a non-fruiting male plant for every six or eight females. Be sure to provide an appropriate consort; the male must flower at the same time as the female. Often hybrid names can be a good clue as to which are good matches. For example, ‘Rhett Butler’ marries well with ‘Scarlet O’Hara’ and ‘Mr. Poppins’ is a good companion for ‘Berry Cutleaf Japanese Poppins™’. If in doubt, check with maples (Acer palmatum your nursery to be sure you have a ‘Dissectum’) (left) good match. have beautiful There is a wide selection of silhouettes in named hybrids that have been winter. Two popular dwarf varieties are ‘Red Sprite’ and Berry Poppins™’. ‘Red Sprite’ is a slow-growing, rounded shrub that peaks at 2 feet to 3 feet tall. While it doesn’t have dramatic fall color like many of the winterberries, it produces profusely and looks highly ornamental with its large red berries that persist into spring (unless the birds feast on them). ‘Jim Dandy’ is the preferred male companion. Petite Berry Poppins™ shows off with her prolific display of large orange-red berries in fall. Many say she produces more berries than ‘Red Sprite’. She also grows a little taller, typically 3 feet to 4 feet. If you have a big hole to fill, another wonderful native holly is the possomhaw (Ilex decidua ‘Warren’s Red’), a

superior hybrid that can grow 15 feet or taller. They like moist areas, making them ideal for low-lying damp areas or rain gardens. Glossy, oval, toothed leaves (2 inches to 3 inches long) remain dark green through autumn, finally turning yellow. When pollinated by a nearby male mate, the inconspicuous female flowers develop into orange-red berries that ripen in September and persist throughout the winter until mid-March. Birds, deer and a variety of small mammals (including opossums as the common name suggests) are attracted to the fruit, as are humans who enjoy the winter berry display. You can hardly beat the bright, iridescent purple berries that cover every stem of our native beautyberry (Callicarpa americana). It’s a great shrub for massing or naturalizing, growing about 10 feet tall. The berries ripen in September through October and are a favorite among wild bird species, including cardinals, mockingbirds, finches, woodpeckers and more. During the summer months, C. Americana is useful as a biting insect repellant. In the early 20th century, farmers crushed the leaves and placed them in between their horse and its harness to keep mosquitoes and ticks away. The U.S. Department
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER | November/December 2020
of Agriculture Research Service has confirmed that beautyberry leaves contain three compounds that are responsible for repelling mosquitoes and other biting bugs, including fire ants. Try crushing a few leaves in your hands to extract the oils and rubbing the oil on your skin. In addition to the standard species, a striking variety is ‘Welsh’s Pink’, first discovered in east Texas. According to the J.C. Raulston Arboretum website, “This selection was thought to be a hybrid between the typical purple form and a white berried plant. Interestingly though, all seedlings from ‘Welch’s Pink’ are true to type and will be pink-fruited — not the expected outcome if this were truly a hybrid. ‘Welch’s Pink’ has pink flowers throughout the summer followed by pastel pink fruits from September lasting well into winter when the birds will eventually pick it clean.” Tim Timmons, owner of Lakescapes Nursery, particularly recommends the native ground cover creeping winterberry (Gaultheria procumbens). Timmons isn’t the only one impressed by the plant. It won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. The rounded, leathery leaves have distinct oil of wintergreen
scent and turn reddish in winter. Small white flowers resembling blueberry blossoms develop into red berries that persist into winter. In addition to their fruiting interest, berry-laden trees and shrubs attract birds such as cardinals, which are like living Christmas ornaments — a joy to watch at any time of year.
Interesting Bark Many deciduous trees and shrubs have multicolored and or peeling bark that stand out dramatically in a winter landscape once the screen of leaves is gone. The dogwood family has three species of deciduous, suckering shrubs that have dramatic winter coloration. The red-barked or tartarian dogwood (Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’) is a rapid-growing, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub noted for its brilliant red stems in winter. For best coloration remove oldest
stems each year. It grows to a maximum size of 4 feet to 7 feet tall on erect, usually unbranched stems. The red osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera ‘Flaviramea’, sometimes sold as C. sericea ‘Lutea’), is worthy for its canary yellow stems, lending it great ornamental value in the winter landscape. It’s not too shabby in fall either when the foliage turns rich shades of orange and red. It has an upright, spreading habit that matures at between 5 feet and 8 feet tall and wide. It can become invasive, spreading by stolons. For best color, prune it severely in early spring. Bloodtwig dogwood (Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’) lives up to its name. The yellow winter stems are tipped with red so they really do look on fire. In fall, the foliage turns golden yellow. Cut back the stems to within a few inches of ground each spring for finest color. It grows to 5 feet tall and 6 feet wide
over eight years. Because these dogwood species are not particularly attractive in the summer, plant them at the back of the perennial border so they’re hidden when the perennials are starring, and can then take the lead role in winter when the perennials go underground. Another stunner in the winter garden is the coral-red bark of the Japanese maple Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’. The bark color of the young growth is intense against the snow, making an image you won’t soon forget. In spring you may notice our native downy serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) clothed in white blossoms along the shoreline. Bring it into your garden and enjoy its year-round interest beginning with the spring flowers, blue-black berries in summer, the orange and red blaze of fall color and the light-gray striations on the silvery bark in winter. Dirr, tree and shrub expert and author of “Manual of Woody Landscape Plants,” writes that the downy serviceberry is “beautiful in winter dress with an understated elegance.” Plant it against a dark background so it best shows off the delicate spring flowers and dramatic fall color. For peeling bark, consider the paperbark maple (Acer griseum), a small (20 feet to 40 feet at maturity), deciduous tree with a rounded form and slender upright branching. It has exfoliating copper orange to cinnamon reddish/brown bark, and the foliage turns a showy orange to red color in fall. Many crape myrtles also have striking exfoliating bark, especially the hybrid ‘Natchez’, a whiteflowering variety. It’s disease resistant, and the deer leave it alone. The Heritage river birch (Betula nigra ‘Heritage’) is a beautiful tree prized for its incredible peeling bark. The bark is salmon-cream to brownish, and as it exfoliates, it reveals a creamy-white

trunk underneath. It ultimately grows 40 feet to 70 feet tall. A dwarf variety, Betula nigra ‘Little King’ FOX VALLEY tops out at 10 feet tall. It has a dense, compact habit with creamy white bark that peels to expose the brown under layer.
Winter Flowers For winter and early spring flowers, look no fur-
ther than hellebores, an evergreen perennial. The deer won’t touch them, and the flowers persist for months. There are several species of this plant, but the two that are best for winter interest are the Christmas rose (Heleborus niger) that begins flowering in early winter and continues into spring and the Lenten rose (H. orientalis) that blooms a month or two later, continuing the floral display into late spring. Position the plants where you can see them from your windows so you can enjoy the floral display to the fullest. Plant groups in part shade under
Camellia japonica ‘Greensboro Red’ flowering in February (top left). Camellia sasanqua ‘Autumn Moon’ is a fall- to winterblooming camellia. Chionodoxa forbesii ‘Pink Giant’ (bottom) is a delicate-looking but hearty — and hardy — bulb. The common name, glory of the snow, is a direct translation of the Greek chion (snow) and dóxa (glory).

Their genus name comes from the Greek words bora meaning “food” and helein meaning “injures/ destroys” in reference to the plant’s toxic leaves, stems and roots, which are poisonous to eat.

trees and large shrubs or in woodland areas. They self-sow and can be divided as the number of growing crowns increases, so your collection can grow as the years go by. Witch hazel, which you can grow as a large, vase-shaped shrub or a small tree, produces spidery flowers in late winter. Flower colors include yellow, orange or red. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’ flowers red, ‘Luna’, ‘Arnold Promise’ and ‘Primavera’ are yellow, ‘Jelena’ is copper-colored. These all bloom in February and March. Our native witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, is another possibility, although the flowers are less dramatic than the non-native ones, and it flowers in November before the “real” winter weather begins. The staff at Lakescapes Nursery recommends choosing late winter flowering shrubs because they are less likely to be nipped in the bud by cold snaps. Two flowering shrubs they particularly like are Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’ and Daphne ‘Carol Mackie’. Daphne ‘Aureo-marginata’ is a variegated form with narrow pale yellow margins on the leaves. It typically grows to 3 feet to 4 feet tall and 2 feet to 4 feet wide and is noted for having slightly better winter hardiness than the species. It blooms
in March with intensely fragrant reddish-purple flowers with pale pink to white insides. Daphne x burkwoodii ‘Carol Mackie’ is another variegated form. Its small leaves have a yellow margin that matures to creamy white. This is a selection that will grow in poor soil and rewards gardeners with a cloak of fragrant, pale pink blossoms in spring. Camellias are nicknamed “The Queen of Winter” because they grace the winter months with a steady stream of flowers. To insure the shrub won’t be killed by an unexpected cold snap (arctic weather in the late 1970s killed almost the entire camellia population in Washington, D.C.), look for varieties that are cold-hardy down to USDA Hardiness Zone 6B. There are two species of camellia that provide fall and winter interest in our area. Camellia sasanqua flowers in fall and winter. It typically begins blooming in early to mid-October and will continue flowering until cold weather sets in, usually in December. C. japonica is an early spring bloomer, beginning its display in February and continuing until April, depending on the weather. Early spring bulbs are another joyous flower choice for winter bloom. Lakescapes Nursery staff suggests planting these bulbs under trees and shrubs. In England these displays are referred to as “March banks.” To plant your own March bank, opt for the early bulbs that can grow and flower in snow. The golden yellow flowers of winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) are a welcome sight in early spring. Add the blue of glory of the snow (Chionodoxa luciliae ) for a clear sky and sunshine mix. Introduce splashes of white of snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis and G. elwesii), and you’ve got an exciting winter floral display. Extend the bulb season under your trees and shrubs by adding Cyclamen hederifolium, a hardy cyclamen that produces pink and white flowers in the fall. The beautiful ivy-shaped leaves are variably colored, but are usually gray-green with silver and white marbling. The foliage persists until the plant goes dormant in spring. For an early spring cyclamen display, plant Cyclamen coum. It is similar in looks to hederifolium, but coum leaves and flowers are more rounded. Winter can be a hard task master, but with a good basic design, which includes trees, shrubs, flowering perennials, bulbs and grasses that shine in cold weather, your garden can please the eye and give the promise of fresh wonders in the coming spring.

hat started as a way to address an immediate need for food at the dawn of the pandemic has transformed into a remarkable nonprofit, assisting hundreds of Bedford and Franklin county residents. Since its start in mid-March, The Landing Love Project has come to be a community lifeline delivering food, books and most valuable of all — hope. The project’s founders are husband and wife Bruno and Tiffany Silva, co-owners of The Landing Restaurant. After 16 years of serving luxurious meals lakeside, the Silvas shut their restaurant’s doors to the public, shifting on a dime to pick-ups and deliveries. In a time that was marked with trials and uncertainties, Bruno and Tiffany realized two things. They had access to a freezer filled with food and they were compelled to get it to those who were struggling to afford it. Looking back after eight months have gone by,

Tiffany says the experience has changed everything, but mostly her perspective. With each meal, route and delivery, her eyes were opened to issues that have long existed under the surface in the Smith Mountain Lake region: poverty, food insecurity and literacy. “These problems were here way before COVID, it just enhanced them a little bit and brought them to our eyes,” Tiffany said.
Starting with the Schools needing meals, Tiffany reached out to Franklin and Bedford County Schools directly. Families with a child enrolled in a free or reduced price lunch program were able to apply for the project’s delivered meals three times per week. Just like that, the project took off with many asking for assistance. The meals were soon offered to seniors and other residents such as single parents who needed to keep providing for their kids.

Bruno (from left) and Tiffany Silva, owners of The Landing Restaurant, recently accepted a $100,000 donation for The Landing Love Project from Michelle and David Baldacci.
“I’m a 36-year-old dad that’s a sophomore in college and I’m taking care of these boys by myself,” said Tim Boyd, a recipient of the project’s deliveries. Tim also holds down a full-time job and sees to it that each of his sons with special needs, Nathaniel and Benjamin, have the medical care they need. These boys have really made an impact on The Landing Love Project team with the sheer joy they exude. When they see the deliveries come in, they often run into the yard and dance.
A friend of hers passed along the news of The Landing Love Project and she reached out to see if they would be willing to provide a few meals for their kids. Immediately, deliveries were made with meals for the whole family. Now, Henagin is back to work and has opted out of the program. “I can’t speak highly enough of their character to do something like that for people they’ve never even met,” Henagin said.

Christina Henagin, is a hairdresser, who was unable to work during the mandated closures. “It was an insanely stressful time. My husband’s disabled, and we have three children, so I’m the primary financial support. At the time COVID hit, we weren’t getting any kind of unemployment, and I didn’t get the stimulus check until about May,” Henagin said.

packaging of the meals while Tiffany reached out to the community for donations of money and time to make their vision possible. “People were volunteering out of the gate and we just started expanding,” Tiffany said. At their busiest point, more than 400 people were being served by 45 drivers on 15 routes, three times a week. From time to time, deliveries began

including crocheted blankets from a volunteer, donated stuffed animals, coloring books, activity books and fun items like bubbles. In late April, World Central Kitchen sponsored the project for eight weeks, purchasing up to 1,000 meals each week. This was a little over half of the project’s demand at the time and helped shoulder some of the price burden. Some of the project’s volunteer drivers, like Debbie and Todd Rice, have continued to make deliveries from the very beginning. One of Debbie’s favorite aspects of lending a hand has been the relationships cultivated with the recipients. “You make that connection and you look forward to seeing them as much as they look forward to seeing you,” Debbie said. “When we deliver this food we don’t judge, we don’t ask questions. We serve and we love.” Part of her motivation to help stems from the principle that no one can know when it might be themselves that falls on hard times or loses their job.

Transcending the Stigma The living situations and financial turmoil faced by neighbors surrounding the lake was, in a sense, “out of sight, out of mind” for many until this project shed a light on it. “We have a lot of people that were maybe on that middle-class line and losing a paycheck or two devastated them,” Tiffany said. “With food insecurity, the hardest thing is that some people don’t let you in and let you know there’s a problem.” The underlying issue that she hopes to help remedy is the weight of the stigma that parallels food insecurity. “For me, it was about feeding people, no matter what. I don’t need to know what your situation is. If you tell me you’re hungry, I’m going to take care of that,” Tiffany said.

He cherishes the time he gets to share with them all, especially a couple of first generation Italian immigrants he’s grown fond of sharing stories with. While the company has always been top-notch, Jim said the living conditions he’s seen on his routes are eye-opening to say the least. “I’ve traveled to about 60 countries in the world and been to a lot of third world countries. Some of the places I deliver to, not all of them of course, but some are as bad as some of the third world countries,” he said. When thinking of Smith Mountain Lake and its shorelines covered with gorgeous multi-story homes, this is a big contrast to imagine within the same counties. The vision is to build a community center that would add a new layer of services to the project. The center would house a kitchen for the meal production and would be the new home base for the meal deliveries. An on-site cafe is also in the plans. the power to soften the edges of this divide and bring together people from all over the community. That is, as long as they are supported.
Big Steps on the Horizon Running the project’s cooking operation out of
the restaurant is only feasible as long as The Landing’s dining room remains closed. This, Tiffany said, is only expected to last until Spring 2021 or until they feel safe to do so. That gives her just a few months to secure a dif-
ferent location where the project can continue and grow. The vision is to build a community center that would add a new layer of services to the project. The center would house a kitchen for the meal production and would be the new home base for the meal deliveries. An on-site community cafe where food purchases would go back into the program as a donation is also in the plans. Taking it one step further, this center would also provide opportunities to address education and literacy with free tutoring sessions, resume guidance, job training and even free music lessons from local volunteers. “Figuring out a long-term solution and a way that we can help in our community to make things better for everybody has got to be the next goal,” Tiffany said. “In the beginning we thought this would go on for 3 to 4 months maybe. We didn’t expect this, but it’s not something we can walk away from.”
Fundraiser Goal of $1 Million In the beginning, the project was receiving about
$15,000 to $20,000 per month and has since dwindled to about $5,000 per month. This, Tiffany said, is not enough to sustain the project and certainly
not enough to fund the high goals for the project’s future. The Landing Love Project board member Michelle Baldacci along with her husband and best-selling author, David Baldacci, took the first big leap in fundraising with a whopping $100,000 donation. “We’ve relied on small donations, which have been phenomenal, but we need some bigger donations now,” Tiffany said. A motorcycle donation raised $25,000 at auction, and the SML community organization, 100+ Women Who Care, also pitched into the project with donations totaling $14,000. This represents nearly an entire month of feeding families in need. To the people learning about the value of this project for the first time and considering getting involved in some way, Tiffany’s message is simple: “Come for a ride with me.”

xtensive interior holiday decorating only became a part of Jim and Cindy Wood’s Christmases after they settled down at the lake. The couple had been high school sweethearts in Ault, Colorado, classes of 1959 and ’60. They married soon after Jim’s college graduation and settled nearby. “Once we saw ‘Sound of Music,’ we decided we wanted to experience living abroad,” Jim recalled. With a master’s degree in business administration in hand, Jim applied for a job with the federal government. His hiring led to living in 11 homes, including ones in Fort Collins, Colorado, McLean, Fairfax and Vienna, Virginia, plus overseas posts in Bern, Switzerland, Tokyo, Japan, and two homes in Laos — where Jim, a CIA financial analyst, helped shutter and secure the station after most all other U.S. personnel were emergency evacuated in May 1975. Indeed, frequent and sudden moves of lots of decor would not have been practical. Once they had retired to Admiral’s Landing,

however, things settled down. Cindy, relaxing a bit after 25 years of teaching English and world history, was eager to display Christmas spirit throughout their lakefront home. A visit to a Roanoke store called Twist & Turns early in the 2006 holiday season got things underway. “We were captivated. Out came the credit card and, well, we went whole hog,” Jim said, gesturing to the home’s upper level railing laden with looped garland and colorful lights. Carolyn McMillan, then a Twist & Turns employee, guided the couple’s selections. She and husband Jerry still spend a pre-Thanksgiving day each year helping decorate the balcony, including the large tree that graces the upstairs family gathering space. Jim’s job is to have all of the storage containers out of the attic and staged for the McMillans; others he brings downstairs where Cindy can work her magic on multiple tabletop displays. Despite paralysis striking as her teaching career ended, she moves deftly around their 7,200 square-foot house on electric scooters. “Carolyn and Jerry lend labor and artistic flair to the project;

we’re the gophers and lunch-makers,” she said. “We make it an occasion.” The only family inspiration for extensive decorating came from Jim’s mother, whom he calls a “tinsel hanger.” “She’d do one strand at a time, draped perfectly, and all of it later put away tangle-free for use again the following year,” he said. The couple’s unique decorations include several metallic floor statues, an uninterrupted set of White House ornaments from 1971 to present, and a tree decorated totally with figurine ornaments — merely a fraction of Cindy’s extensive Hummel collection. She also treasures a candy dish handpainted by a friend.

All of the hard work is overseen by Theo and Cleo, a pair of 10-year-old Basset hounds who, Jim said, rule all aspects of the home’s operation from their mattress-sized matching doggy beds near the kitchen island. The home’s open-plan first floor leaves them good sight lines to family activities. On the lake level, there are multiple rooms furnished and decorated with mementos from overseas living. “We’re privileged to have lived in interesting places,” Jim said. But when asked which of those has been her favorite, Cindy shows not a beat of hesitation. “Right here at SML — it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Jim King and Mary Miller add to their collection of nutcrackers every year. They have so many, it can be tough to find new ones, Jim said.
I
t’s not unusual for a few traditional nutcrackers to emerge when pulling out the holiday decorations, but at the home of Jim King and Mary Miller, an entire brigade of them — each one a foot or more tall and distinct from its brethren in face, garb and accoutrements — reports for duty. The nutcrackers been acquired one-per-year since the couple met. “Each year the search for something we don’t already have gets more difficult,” Jim said. The bulk of the collection sits in the couple’s living room, atop an antique 1840s pianoforte, a spinet-like piano purchased at auction and then refurbished. Though some nutcrackers are limited edition Zim’s, numbered and dated, most are just
unusual or indicative of an event in the couple’s lives together. An aviator nutcracker recalls the year they took Mary’s father, whose career was in manufacturing of military aviation equipment, to the airshow flyin in Oshkosh, Wis. A formally-dressed gentleman holding a champagne bottle represents the millennial year 2000. An Elton John figure in a sequined outfit is a tribute to a concert they attended. There are English-garbed nutcrackers, wooden soldiers from a trip to New York with the kids, mariners and a fisherman, among others. The couple shared their secret for storing these nutcrackers, many of which have delicate appendages and protrusions.

Mary added, “Jim is handy like that. Still, things get broken every year, so he has to have the glue handy as boxes are opened.” Also unique to this home’s decorating: the primary Christmas tree is in the dining room, frequently used for holiday gatherings instead of the kitchen bar, which, despite its lovely lake view, is not as conducive to seated conversation with family. On this traditional tree are remembrance ornaments that were purchased on the couple’s trips to London, Paris, Mexico, Williamsburg, the Caribbean and other destinations. Rigging in the Season Jim and Carol Evans’ sailboat lights up the night each year. by FERNE HALE photo by HEATHER TURNER

J
im and Carol Evans began decorating their sailboat after noticing there were usually only powerboats participating in the annual Lighted Boat Parade hosted by Virginia Dare Cruises and Marina. • “So for 2013, we put lights up the mast and along the rails and showed up for the parade,” Jim said. “We liked the look of it, so we left the lights in place for the entire Christmas season. People said that the lighted sail area looked a lot like a Christmas tree. Now we actually go for that look.” • There are 14 strands of lights — a total of 1,200 bulbs — pulled to the top of the 27-foot mast on three different halyards. There’s also a white star atop the mast as a finishing touch. • The Evans decorate their boat just after Thanksgiving and use a nightly timer so the display can be viewed in their cove of The Waterfront community throughout the season. • On Christmas Eve, they motor out along Betty’s and Becky’s Creeks with the tree-shaped lights ablaze. “People seem to love seeing it — they cheer and beep horns as we pass by,” Carol said. • “We now have a decorating tradition for Valentine’s day also,” Jim added. “As a gift to my wife, I surprised her by putting 700 red lights on a sail that say ‘I (heart) You.’ Those generate lots of comments as well.”

e: “Good morning Hon! Today is the big day!” Hubs: “Um, OK….” “Oh, come on, you remember — we’re going shopping today! We have a long list of friends and family who we need to buy for, and we’ve been putting this off for weeks.” “Ugh, I don’t wanna go shopping. The crowds are too big, it’s not safe, I’m tired, you know what everyone wants – you don’t need my help, I have to pay bills today, the yard needs raking, the boat house is a mess and needs to be organized, the game is on at 1, Mercury’s in retrograde.” “Oh no, no, no … you promised this year we would do this together. And, we’re going to shop online! No lines, no crowds, it will be fast and easy!” “Mmm hmm …”

Now, every day is Black Friday. You just have to know how to find the best deals on the Internet. Luckily, you married Shop.Dot.Kimba.” “SO lucky.” “Look Buster, we’re doing this. Today. Joyfully. Happily. In the time we’ve already wasted this morning we could have found the perfect power drill for my brother.” “We’re getting a drill for your brother? I need a drill too! OK, I’m in.” “Great, let me get a cup of coffee while you boot up your laptop.” “We need to use your laptop.” “Why?” “Because mine is acting funny. Last

Who else do we need to shop for today?” “I have a list.” “Of course you do.” Withering stare. “Sorry, who’s on your list?” My mom, your aunts, the boys, my sister and husband, your work teammates…” “Why do I have to buy anything for the guys I work with?” “Because last year you said, ‘Next year I need to remember to get some small gifts for my teammates’.” “Yeah, but I can get them all gift cards.” “You still need to order gift cards in time to have them shipped. No holiday parties this year, remember? Do you have their addresses?” “Why would I have their home addresses? Wouldn’t that be a little creepy?” “They have our address!” “They do?” “Honey, we got holiday cards from all of them.” “Oh yeah. We really need to send out holiday cards too. Do we have any cards?” Sigh. “I’m getting my laptop. Can you get me some coffee too?” “I think we might be out of coffee. Let’s go to Carl’s.”
