While procrastination might be a tradition of mine, there are other holiday traditions that are more compelling. In this issue, we take a look at some ways lake residents celebrate the season. We also feature one area nonprofit that is helping aging seniors with everyday tasks so that they may live at home as long as it’s practical to do so. Finally, get your regular dose of funny with our humor columnist in the latest installment of Dock Tale Hour. From all of us at Smith Mountain Laker magazine, have a wonderful and safe holiday season.

The Garden in Every Sense and Season By Tovah Martin, photographs by Kindra Clineff. Timber Press 292 pages. Hardcover. $24.95
in author tovah martin’s words,“This is the tale of someone who has looked at her garden for years, but only now saw it fully for the first time. I have learned that unless you consciously experience your garden, you might be blind to its beauty. And if you don’t listen, it will remain mute. This is the journal of an awakening told throughout the course of a year. But it is not my individual story — it is everyone’s.” In a series of essays, Martin takes readers through the four seasons, exploring the five senses that are awakened and energized by the garden — if you take the time to experience it. A gifted writer, Martin expresses herself in creative ways that

draw in the reader. Any resolve one might have to read “just one” essay before doing whatever task is pressing, can easily turn into a marathon of “just one more” pleasure. In an essay written to celebrate sight in the summer garden, Martin writes, “Nobody tells a poppy where to settle; they are particularly independent and spirited. Given a little patch of unclaimed earth, they will pop up. And the results are stunning.” In an autumn essay on sound called “Crunch Time,” she writes, “Anyone who still rakes leaves will tell you that one of the perks is audible. I love to listen to the sound of leaves being shuffled around.”

By Joan Maloof, photography by Robert Llewellyn. Timber Press 266 pages. Hardcover. $40
the latest masterpiece from the team of Robert Llewellyn and Joan Maloof is “The Living Forest,” a visual journey that immerses you deep into the woods, revealing both obvious as well as hidden beauty. Llewellyn’s photography is compelling and gorgeous, ranging from wide angle, aerial images of deciduous forests to micro images of a tree root’s tiny hairs; the abstract, iridescent pattern of a frog’s skin; and leaf pores resembling tiny cabbages that allow gasses to pass in and out of the cells. The chapter titles themselves awaken our mind to the life of a forest, beginning at the top with the canopy and bird life, moving down toward earth exploring

Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes the high line in new york city is perhaps the most remarkable collection of gardens in New York. It took 10 years of Timber Press. battling with the city to save the obso320 pages. Paperback. lete, elevated freight railway line from $40 destruction and to transform it into a public garden. Opened in 2009, it attracts more than five million visitors a year. “Gardens of the High Line” is a love letter to this remarkable garden. Coauthored by Piet Oudolf, the Dutch landscape designer who is renowned for his groundbreaking use of ornamental and native grasses and was a consultant on the High Line garden project, and Rick Darke, this is a book you’ll want to return to many times. The photographs by Rick Darke take readers through the seasons, showing the garden as it evolves in its yearlong cycle of growth and decay. Both intimate moments — a close-up of a seed head, a detail of a piece of rusted steel, a beautifully framed image of a woman reading on a bench — as well as the dramatic double-page spreads of sweeping scenes will wow readers. Hypertufa Containers: Creating and Planting an Alpine Garden By Lori Chips. Timber Press 244 pages. Paperback. $40
the crafty gardeners in your life will be thrilled to receive a copy of Lori Chips’ “Hypertufa Containers.” Hypertufa is a substance created by combining various aggregates and bonding them with Portland cement. The result mimics the properties of a natural rock called tufa, which is an ideal growing environment for alpine and other small plants. Chips’ book provides all the information readers need to create their own troughs, starting with simple rectangles and moving on to more advanced elaborate shapes with different planting pockets and levels. The written instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the accompanying photographs add to the clarity. In the chapter on planting the troughs, Chips provides detailed
advice on each step of the process. She also includes design tips for creating miniature landscapes, and here, too, photographs illustrate each step. The recommended plant list is organized by the shapes you may want for your design: ground covers, “buns and cushions,” “droolers” (cascading plants) and, of course, succulents and alpines. Inspirational photographs throughout the book provide rich ideas for trough design and planting. In most cases the captions tell the complete name of each plant, including the hybrid, making it easy for readers to recreate the illustrated look and elevating this how-to book into one that’s destined to become a beloved, practical resource for ideas and information.

got to looking at my Christmas decorations about 10 years ago, and it struck me: I had snowmen, ornaments, villages, but nothing that conveyed the real meaning of Christmas,” said Smith Mountain Lake resident Becki Fuzi. “So I decided to change that, and I started looking for Nativity scenes.” Being a savvy shopper, Fuzi had always enjoyed antique stores and yard sales, although her style never suggests “second-hand.” Now her recreational shopping had a higher purpose. “My collection began over 35 years ago when I bought the Kitty Cat Nativity by Eddie Walker,” Fuzi said of the famous Washington state artist. “I was a cat person then and had four cats, but Al is allergic to cats,” she said of her husband of 28 years. “I gave up the cats and kept the Nativity set — and Al.” Fuzi found her favorite Nativity scene in an antique shop on U.S. 220 in Wirtz. It is a Grandeur Noel porcelain set made in the 1950s and is on display on Fuzi’s

Fuzi’s first creche is by Washington state artist Eddie Walker. Below is a detail of a navy blue and gold set Fuzi found at a Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour silent auction.
living room mantel. “Curiously, the former owner had identified each wrapped piece with a note stating ‘black guy,’ or ‘guy with vase,’ ‘baby’ and so on instead of ‘shepherd,’ or ‘wise man’ or ‘Christ Child,’” Fuzi said of the set. Several years ago, at a silent auction for the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, Fuzi bought a 20-piece Nativity set that someone had made and painted a glossy navy blue with gold accents. This set sits atop Fuzi’s dining room china cabinet where a light shows it off perfectly. Once when Fuzi was browsing around a Roanoke gift shop over Christmas, she spotted Dept. 56 villages displayed on carved and painted Styrofoam. Inspecting the backdrop carefully, she thought, “I could make something like that!” And she did. The manger backdrop that Fuzi made is double-sided and displayed on a table, which can be seen from both sides, and features two Nativity scenes. The carving is quite intricate, featuring individual rows of stone blocks with tiny lights illu-
minating the figures. At a silent auction for a Christian school, Fuzi acquired a Hawthorne Village Thomas Kinkade Nativity scene. The pieces had been discontinued, but fortunately she got a full set at once. That scene is lighted and on display in the foyer of Fuzi’s Moneta home.
One set that Fuzi purchased during an annual Trinity Treasures yard sale at Trinity Ecumenical Parish is displayed above Fuzi’s stove on a mantel in her kitchen. The set’s bright colors show up well in that spot. Since the mantel is narrow, the set seems to fit perfectly. One small Nativity set is all white and

all one piece; one is a small night-light and yet another is a scene on a ring box. Fuzi’s 10-piece Jim Shore Nativity that she received as a gift is unique with geometric designs on the figures. Shore’s art has scenes on people and their clothing, plus messages written on each figure. Although most scenes have a wooden stable with the figures inside, Shore’s gives a reverse view looking out of the stable. The set has a backdrop painted on the back of the stable, which makes it look as if you are inside the stable looking out at the desert and the starry sky. Fuzi’s mother also played a role in collecting when she spotted a Nativity set at a yard sale one day while mother and daughter were shopping together. “My mom was so excited to have found it that I had to buy it,” Fuzi recalled. “Now I have a nice, tangible memory of that happy day spent with her.” While Fuzi has an ornament-laden tree, snowmen, angels and villages elsewhere in her home, the main floor remains dedicated to decorations that proclaim the real meaning of Christmas.

Christmas Eve? Chuck E. Cheese! T H E W O L F E FA M I LY judy and kurt wolfe of huddleston unknowingly began a family tradition on Christmas Eve in 2001 when they offered to take their four grandchildren — Cassie, Brittany, Brooke and Brady, then ages 2 to 6 — on an outing while their children Jennifer and her husband, Kevin, and Tom and his wife, Jan, made last-minute preparations for Santa. Off the Wolfes went with the grandchildren to Chuck E. Cheese where they ate pizza, played arcade games and redeemed earned prize coupons for toys. The outings to Chuck E. Cheese continued until about three years ago, when it was decided that everyone, including two additional grandchildren, Dylan and Hope, who were 14 and 11 by Top Photo Courtesy of the wolfe family Right Photo dreamstime

Bird Trees & Handmade Cards T H E C O L L I N S FA M I LY clif and chris collins, who live in The Waterfront, have longdecorated their Christmas tree in a fashion that is, quite literally, for the birds. “Once it is loaded with lots of lights, family Christmas treasures and a long-tailed ribbon, we glue a piece of popcorn to the tip of each branch. After the New Year, the popcorn-laden pine is propped up outside where it draws over-wintering birds to feast on the popcorn treats,” Chris explained. The couple also enjoys making their own Christmas cards. “Initially they were pen and ink drawings I made of our beautiful old Victorian house in upstate New York,” Clif said. “Chris loved to decorate and called it ‘our Christmas house,’ so I’d make sketches of the door with its wreath, a candle in the window [and] garland on the stair railing. Those would be the fronts of the cards; Chris wrote the verses for inside.” Chris added, “Since we moved here, Clif does a lake-themed drawing for each card’s cover. We’ve ended up with a collection of cards that brings back lots of great memories of life at the lake.” A Christmas card drawn by Clif Collins.
Grand Chefs Whip Up Christmas Dinner T H E G A R D N E R FA M I LY vicki and tim gardner of goodview began a holiday tradition when their grandchildren — Tim, then 6, and Eloise, 4 — helped perform simple tasks to prepare holiday dinner for the gathered family, such as setting the table, putting bread into the oven and pouring water in glasses. But that help has evolved to where Tim and Eloise, now 13 and 11, respectively, stage the entire meal. They make up a name for their “restaurant,” prepare themed table decorations with place cards and dress in chef’s outfits. With help, as needed, from their parents and Grandpa Tim, they peel potatoes, season the turkey and prepare most of the meal’s other elements. “They feel like they’re making a major contribution to the family’s enjoyment of the holidays, and they are!” Vicki said. The Gardners also spread their Christmas joy by finding friends who have no plans for a holiday meal, then inviting them to come share theirs. “It makes a meal extra special when you include someone who might otherwise be alone and adds immensely to the conversation around the table,” Vicki said. “Plus, it’s a bigger crowd to applaud the efforts of our young chefs.”

Well Wishes Sent Around The World T H E S I C H E R FA M I LY the holidaytradition atthe home of Bryan and Sharon Sicher actually interrupts the Christmas celebration. Just before noon on Christmas day, all activity stops, and eggnog is poured. At noon, the family and guests then face north. Taking turns, each will announce the names of family and friends in that direction who are in their holiday thoughts. The group repeats the ritual at three more points on the compass — east, south and west. “Thus, for 20 minutes or so, our thoughts and prayers embrace people whom we love that can’t physically share our celebration, but are with us in our hearts and minds,” Sharon said. The tradition, which is now embraced by members of Sharon’s extended family, began two generations ago with Sharon’s grandmother. Her husband, a senior officer in the Navy during World War II, typically missed family Christmas due to deployment. “His assignments were often secret, so we were never sure which area of the globe he’d be serving in on Christmas,” Sharon said. “We covered all the bases by toasting our love for him facing each major direction.”
Stitches In Time T H E B R E W E R FA M I LY carol brewer of hardy makes her holiday visits with family in Seattle especially memorable with her self-conceived History Sheet tradition. After dinner, four generations, including Carol, her son and daughterin-law, two grandsons and four great-grandchildren, each make pencil sketches that represent a blessing or memory from the past year on a sheet of paper. Carol brings the sheet home and, before the next family holiday gathering, uses her embroidery skills to permanently capture the drawings in colorful scenes. Great-grandson Zachary, now 15, created his first history sheet remembrance years ago — an orange school bus to commemorate his first bus ride to school. Last year, great-grandson Logan documented his train trip on the Polar Express. Other entries celebrate new homes, babies born and memorable special events, including one that captured the occasion of being an audience member at the Ellen DeGeneres show. “I’ll use the sheet to make a quilt once it is chock full of memories, likely after Christmas 2019,” Carol said. There’s also another history sheet for the Pennsylvania side of Carol’s family, replete with Christmas greetings, holiday poems and symbols. “That sheet is king-size,” Carol said. “We use it as a tablecloth – covered with plastic to protect it from any meal-time spills.”

ituated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area offer residents and vacationers almost endless hiking opportunities. With breathtaking mountain views, an abundance of birds and wildlife and numerous health and fitness benefits, it’s no wonder that hiking is a favorite pastime here. Inspired by a desire to enjoy nature, a local group of hiking enthusiasts came together to form the Ridge Runners of SML in 1998. Today, 20 years later, the group hosts 14 hikes a year throughout the spring and fall. Dick West of Moneta has led the Ridge Runners for the past 15 years. If there’s any doubt about the fitness benefits of hiking, one only need meet Dick, whose athletically-fit appearance belies his real age (86). According to his “main squeeze,” Fran Burns, “Hiking is what keeps Dick young.” West’s face lights up when he talks

about hiking. “It all began with canoeing as a teenager,” he recalled. “Hiking came as a natural outgrowth of my passion for canoeing.” After a successful 25-year career with RCA in New Jersey, followed by 15 years with Sony Corporation’s Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, Dick and his wife, Pat, retired to Smith Mountain Lake in 1999. “One of our new neighbors invited us to join a Ridge Runners hike, and we were immediately hooked,” Dick said. The couple agreed to be co-leaders of the Ridge Runners a few years later. Widowed in 2013, Dick has served as the “Grand Wizard of Hikes” until this fall, when he handed over the proverbial poles to fellow hiker Dave Wilson. Although, don’t count him out completely.

FIT & HEALTHY Hiking “I’m not hanging up my hiking boots and walking stick quite yet; I’ll continue hiking for as long as I’m able,” Dick said. After all these years of hiking, Dick named Crabtree Falls as his all-time favorite place to hike. “It has the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, and this spring was absolutely loaded with flowering rhododendron and mountain laurel,” he said. With a grin, he reflected on the social hierarchy of the hikes. “The hikers naturally divide themselves into three groups: the seasoned hikers, who want to challenge themselves physically, take the lead at a faster pace; the flower and bird identifiers and photographers bring up the rear; and, in the middle, the story tellers.” The Ridge Runners group, which falls under the umbrella of the SML Newcomers Club, has about 50 members. Hikes are every two weeks on Wednesday mornings, departing from either the Moneta/SML Library in Bedford County or in the Westlake area of Franklin County. The group has a list of 55 different hikes from which to choose, ranging in length from 2 to 8 miles, and difficulty levels from “easy” to “moderate/strenuous.” Anyone interested in joining the Ridge Runners should contact Dave Wilson at 540-296-1497. Franklin County Parks and Recreation offers additional hiking opportunities, including six hikes this fall called “Colorful Trails Hiking Series.” Outdoor Recreation Manager Matt Ross said there are many benefits to group hiking. “The primary benefit of hiking is participation in a low impact, sustainedendurance activity,” he said, “while the secondary benefits are more socially based and include meeting others with similar interests, exploring trail systems in the safety of a group and trying a new activity, just to name a few.” The remaining hikes in the series (tree identification is a secondary objective) include a 4.75-mile hike at Grassy Hill Natural Area Preserve on Nov. 6; an easy 2-mile hike at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park on Nov. 13; and a 2-mile hike at Waid Park on Nov. 20 followed by a picnic. Registration is $7 per hike and can be made through playfranklincounty.com. Another close-to-home hiking option is Booker T. Washington National Monument, which offers two trails for casual hikers: Plantation Trail, a ¼-mile trail

through the park’s historic area; and JackO-Lantern Branch Trail, a 1.5-mile walk through fields and forests. Trail guides are available at the park’s visitor center. Several more challenging trails in Franklin County include the Dogwood Glen Trail, 4.5-miles of moderate to strenuous trails along Philpott Lake; Jamison Mill Park, which features more than 6 miles of moderate trails; and Smart View Recreation Area, a 2.6-mile loop along the Blue Ridge Parkway. In addition to being able to access the Appalachian Trail, Bedford County offers an assortment of hiking trails, including Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston with numerous easy-to-moderate hiking options that feature great views of the lake, as well as picnic and rest areas. Other options include Moneta Park near
Downtown Moneta, and just off U.S. 460 in Bedford County, there is Falling Creek Park, Montvale Park and New London Tech Trails. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, two popular hikes are Sharp Top and Flat Top, two of the three mountains known as the Peaks of Otter. These are terrific choices for experienced and athletically-fit hikers. Sharp Top is a difficult 2.7-mile outand-back trail, with gorgeous 360-degree views from the summit. For those who are unable to do the full hike, a great alternative is to hop on the Sharp Top bus, which takes riders close to the summit (April through October only). It was once believed that Sharp Top was the highest peak in Virginia; however, that honor goes to Mount Rogers in the Grayson Highlands area of western Virginia. Flat Top Mountain is actually about 200 feet higher than Sharp Top, and although not as popular, Flat Top is a challenging 5.4-mile hike that offers spectacular views. “This part of Virginia includes some of the best hiking trails in the USA, including many easily-accessible miles of the Appalachian Trail,” said lake resident and hiking enthusiast Brian Raub. “We usually day-hike with energy bars, trail mix, a quart or two of water for each of us and a camera. Our favorite nearby hike is Dragon’s Tooth, but McAfee Knob (both in Roanoke County) on the Appalachian Trail is another iconic, rewarding hike.” With so many hiking options available in the area, if someone tells you to “take a hike,” you may just want to do it!

Story by JERRY HALE Photography by HEATHER TURNER
People who are fortunate enough to live at Smith Mountain Lake often decide they’d like to stay here forever, although the limitations imposed by aging can make doing so a challenge. But thanks to Neighbors Helping Neighbors, the help that retirees may need to stay in their homes and maintain their independence is now accessible. NHN got its start in 2013 when Trinity Ecumenical Parish, led by the Rev. Dr. Philip Bouknight, hosted a public forum on senior-living issues. After that meeting, a needs assessment, conducted in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake and area Lions clubs, confirmed there were gaps in services to seniors in the area. In response, NHN incorporated in 2014 as a nonprofit to provide services for seniors 60 and older to help them stay in their homes as long as practical. Services, including driving to medical appointments, helping with shopping and other errands, performing light home maintenance (watering plants, minor repairs and changing light bulbs, among others), and touching base with phone calls, are provided by more than two dozen volunteers. At first, NHN’s service area was relatively small and included only the Scruggs Road corridor in Franklin County. Now, three years later, NHN serves the area around the lake in both Bedford and Franklin counties. For an annual fee of $480 for an individual or $600 for two in a household, seniors can request unlimited assistance with transportation and in-home services. “Our goal is to help them enjoy the later stages of their retirement, stay safe and be comfortable living independently in the homes they love,” said Lorie Smith, NHN’s board president. Smith conducts an intake visit with applicants to assess the fit between their needs and the availability of volunteers. Janet Pagans, who is NHN’s only paid employee, works part-time from home as services coordinator. “When members have a need, they call me, and I

Meaningful friendships based on caring concern for member welfare often develop.” Some members who live alone just want someone to talk to occasionally. Other check-ins are performed regularly, usually at the request of a family member. “It makes me feel good to know we are helping members retain the independence they desire and stay in their homes where they are most comfortable,” Pagans said. Another NHN service, according to Sandee Burt, NHN’s board secretary, is acting as a health care advocate during doctor visits. “Elders sometimes forget or don’t fully understand what doctors tell them or are hesitant to ask important questions,” she said. “Our drivervolunteer can accompany the member, take notes and provide other support as requested.” David Phelps, 75, became a member of NHN after having major surgery. er since 2015, Phelps was eager to remain in the home he and his late wife, Judy, had shared for 14 years. “I realized I was still perfectly capable of giving, but could be just a fall or illness away from needing help from others,” Phelps said. “Volunteers are critical to the long-term success of NHN, so by helping I was ensuring the future availability of care I will someday need.” After undergoing a standard background check, a requirement for all NHN volunteers, Phelps signed on as a volunteer driver. “While I’ve also done some miscellaneous household assists, I’ve been privileged to drive members to des-
tinations all across our area — to Roanoke, Lynchburg and several places right here at the lake,” Phelps said. “Transportation for folks who can no longer get themselves to the myriad destinations that define a good quality of life has been proven to be a determining factor in their being able to stay in their homes. I’ll keep helping with that as long as I can do it safely.” Shirley Graham has been an NHN member for three years. While she’s still able to handle household chores, she can no longer drive. Instead, she calls Pagans to schedule rides to the dentist, doctors’ appointments and to get her shopping done.

Part-timer Janet Pagans works from home to coordinate services that meet member needs. She is NHN’s only paid employee.
“They even offered to take me to church,” Graham said. “I had hip surgery in February — Neighbors Helping Neighbors was a lifesaver after that.” To expand its reach in the community, NHN now offers 90-day memberships that can serve as a trial period to verify a care-recipient’s or family member’s comfort with all aspects of the service. “It’s also ideal for someone who is going to need transportation and household help following joint replacement or other major surgery,” Pagans said. “Or it might fit someone who spends only part of their year here at SML.”
72
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER november • december 2018
NHN also organizes service days twice a year, recruiting volunteers for a day of housecleaning or lawn maintenance, which has resulted in several new regular volunteers joining the NHN ranks. As that volunteer base grows, NHN is hopeful it can expand its coverage area, too. “Sponsoring a member can give great comfort to siblings or children who live too far from SML to monitor their loved one’s well-being,” Burt said. “But the member must be comfortable with our involvement. We work hard to be there for them while not threatening their cherished independence.”
Added Pagans, “I wish this program had been available when my mom was in her late 60s. It would have been a blessing for both of us.” Because NHN is a nonprofit that relies on memberships and donations, there will be a concert fundraiser featuring the lake’s steel drum bands, along with the Knock Knock Marimbas and guest musicians, on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. Tickets are $10 each ($5 for kids younger than 13) and will be sold at the door. For more information about Neighbors Helping Neighbors, visit nhnsml.com.

Dock Tale Hour
By Kimberly Dalferes
‘Why do we need to power wash the roof?’ A perfectly reasonable conversation about getting ready for the holidays
M
E: “Hon, company’s comin’. Time to get the house in order.” HUBS: “Aw, geez, I thought we were going to Aunt Terry’s this year.” “Nope, it’s our turn to host. Besides, this house is a mess. We need to get our act together.” “This house is not a mess. This house is lived in.” “Well ‘lived in’ ain’t gonna cut it. It’s time to put on the dog.” [Put On The Dog, idiom. To pretend that one is very stylish or rich.] HUBS: “Look, I don’t want this to get crazy out of control. It’s just family.” ME: “Exactly — it’s family! You don’t think your aunt will notice the dust bunnies under the bed in the spare bedroom? Or the caulking that needs to be replaced around the tub in the guest bathroom?” “Bunnies? We have bunnies?” “I have it under control this year. I have a list. And a timeline. With charts and graphs.” “Rut roh.” “We’re going to agree to tackle this list together. And, we can bring in reinforcements.”

“And, by reinforcements you mean spend money.” “Well, do YOU want to power wash the roof?” “Wait, what? Why do we need to power wash the roof? No one is going to see or notice the roof!” “The whole house needs to be power washed — they can do the roof too.” “We’re already down the rabbit hole.” “Shall we continue to review the list?” “Sure.” “While I’m getting out Grandma’s china and polishing the silver…” “Why do we have to use that stuff? We can’t even put it in the dishwasher.” “Because it’s tradition and it’s how we roll here. Grandma’s ‘stuff’ comes out over the holidays.” “Suit yourself.” “While I’m polishing, you need to clean out all the kitchen drawers.” “How can I do that while I’m supervising the power washer guys?” “And that reminds me, you also need to call the lawn service and ask them if they can trim the front bushes.” “Babe, it’s winter. The bushes do not need trimming.” “We should also start laundry now. We
need clean sheets on all the beds and extra towels for each guest.” “Guests? I thought we were just doing dinner. People are staying here?” “We talked about this. Yes, everyone who has to travel in is staying here.” “Well that changes everything. Add to your list ‘hide the liquor and lock up the jewels.’” “You are getting on my last nerve. OK, you take a look at this list. Show me one thing on here that you can and want to do.” “Hmm, toilet paper. I can definitely go to Costco for toilet paper.” “Great. I have this shopping list for you.” Truth be told, it’s all worthwhile — the craziness that leads to spending time with family and friends. Some of my best childhood memories are from times spent over Thanksgiving at my Grandma’s house. She always made it look effortless. I hope I do her proud. Happy holidays to you and yours.
