T

he other day, as I was driving across Hales Ford Bridge, I chuckled when I saw a couple of giant hot pink flamingos tethered to nearby docks and bobbing in the lake. Back in the day, we’d be lucky to find an old black inner tube that barely held two of us (and don’t get me started on how hot the tube’s surface was if you didn’t keep it wet!). Nowadays, you can find these ginormous party islands that can seat six or more — some even include coolers and sun shades. Check out what we found floating around the lake starting on page 62. Although warmer temperatures may continue to linger through October, you may also detect a hint of fall in the air. With the upcoming change of the season, there is anticipation of fall festivals, including the all-new SML Fall Fit Fest, Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival and the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. Speaking of the home tour, starting on page 30, we’ll take an inside look at the Mallen home, one of eight on this year’s tour. You can also check out the other homes selected for the tour, as well as find directions (by land and by water) to each one. From all of us at Laker magazine, have a safe, happy fall season! Photo jennifer chaconas, jolly jen photography

The Mallen home is one of eight on the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Your this year, and is also the subject of this month’s Lake Homes feature. Page 30.

SHORELINES Home & Garden

Spring is the wonder-making season when good things come in both big and small packages. Budding trees, hosts of golden daffodils, sweeps of tulips and fragrant hyacinths delight and beguile us as winter recedes. Often overlooked for the garden is an entire category of alluring springflowering bulbs. These are the miniature bulbs, officially classed as “minor bulbs” because of their diminutive size. Many, including snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis), snow crocus (Crocus chrysanthuys), glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa luciliae) and winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), are precocious bloomers, commonly flowering before the snow has melted. They are the promise of coming floral beauty at a time when a gardener deeply craves color.

Checkered Lilies Fritillaria meleagris you may know fritillaria meleagris by one of its many common names, including checkered lily, guinea-hen flower, snake’shead lily, leper lily (because its shape resembles the bell once carried by lepers), frog-cup, drooping tulip or chess flower. The botanical name Fritillaria comes from the Latin fritillus meaning dice-box. The species name meleagris means “spotted like a guineafowl.” The checkerboard pattern on its deep purple, bell-shaped flowers is unusual and eye-catching, sure to charm even the most blasé, although the British Edwardian writer Vita Sackville-West referred to them as, “a sinister little flower, in the mournful colour of decay.” If that descrip-

tion puts you off, there also is an heirloom white species, F. meleagris var. unicolor subvar. alba that dates back to 1575. The ivory-white flowers, which lack the checkerboard pattern, are green-veined. Native to damp meadows and woodlands in Europe, these hardy bulbs were once abundant in the wild in the UK, particularly in the Thames Valley and parts of Wiltshire. However, during World War II,

the ancient fields were plowed for growing food, destroying its natural habitat. Fortunately, there are a few places that escaped the plow where they can still be seen growing in the wild. An April flower pilgrimage worth taking would be to see these distinctive flowers blooming in their natural surroundings. Notable sites where they are still found include the meadows at Magdalen College, Oxford (the meadows are open until dusk; it’s worth waiting until late in the day to visit to see the blossoms light up like jewels in the low spring sun), Iffley Meadows near Donnington Bridge in Oxford and the Oxfordshire village of Ducklington, which holds a “Fritillary Sunday” festival in mid-April.

Fritillaria meleagris is an excellent choice for naturalizing in a moist, partially shaded area of the garden. They look great combined with marsh marigolds. If your soil is not ideal, enhance the conditions by adding black peat moss, which will improve the soil structure and increase water retention. Plant nine bulbs per square foot, ideally in drifts with other spring bulbs to create a flower meadow effect. The bulbs have a faint skunky odor, which has the salutary effect of repelling pests, including voles, squirrels and deer.

Winter Aconite Eranthis hyemalis blooming even earlier than snowdrops, each winter aconite flower is like a cup of sunshine in the late-winter garden. Adding to their merits, they are so animalproof the Elizabethans called them “Little Yellow Woolfes-bain.” Not only are they a bane to wolves (should any be around), deer, squirrels, voles and other garden pests eschew them.

22

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

“LITTLE YELLOW WOLFES-BANE”

Winter Aconite adds a warm splash to any late-winter garden, and is nearly animal-proof: Deer, squirrels, voles and other garden pests (and yes, wolves) steer clear of them.

If in the past you’ve tried unsuccessfully to establish a colony of winter aconites, you are not alone. In her popular blog, “A Way to Garden,” Margaret Roach wrote about the problem in March 2016. “You can count on Eranthis hyemalis, or winter aconite, for a couple of things: to be a pioneer each spring, blooming extraearly even among the early bulbs, and to provoke consternation and also conversation among gardeners who planted them but got nothing in return. In late winter or early spring phrases like ‘slow to establish’ are heard from frustrated gardeners seeing maybe 2 of the 200 they planted last fall actually doing anything.” Part of the problem is the bulbs dry out easily, making them less viable. The tubers should be planted in early fall when they are fresh. Soak them in water for several

hours beforehand, then bury them an inch deep. Like many of these small bulbs, they look best if you plant nine bulbs per every square foot. And Roach shares good news: “Buying waxed tubers from a vendor like Old House Gardens also helps. I had virtually 100 percent success with their waxed tubers — a dramatic difference from any other time I’d tried to establish a new colony.” The other secret is not to disturb the plants. Roach writes, “The best colonies of winter aconite I’ve ever seen were ones where the plants had sown themselves around over time. As is likewise the case with many other self-sowns, my best success with Eranthis has come under deciduous trees and shrubs where you aren’t in there rooting around a lot and disturbing them; where they have a place to themselves to arise, bloom, fade gradually until they’re good and done, and set seed at their own pace.” They thrive in that magical combination of rich, moist, well-drained soil, and don’t like to completely dry out even in

summer dormancy. Too much mulch also will inhibit seed germination, thus reducing your chances of growing a spreading colony of these golden cupped early spring flowers. To see knock-your-socks-off displays of winter aconites in flower, visit Ithan Valley Park in Radford, Pennsylvania and the Wild Garden at Wave Hill in the Bronx in New York City. In February and March you’ll see wide swaths of them in bloom under the trees.

Snowdrops Galanthus snowdrops, like most of the minor bulbs, are underused in Virginia gardens. Put one or two in the garden, and few will notice, but mass-plant them in the woods, and you’ll have a wondrous display of white flowers worthy of a pilgrimage to see. Do bear in mind that newly planted snowdrops will take a year to get established. In their second year, they will produce more flowers and begin to multiply and spread.

Once they are established, you can divide tight clumps by digging them up after the foliage has died back in mid to late spring. They will dry out if left out of the ground, so re-plant immediately. The genus name Galanthus is Greek. Gala means milk and anthos is flower. These milky white flowers, which are enlivened with a green blaze on the petals, look best grown in sweeping drifts in the woods, planted among the roots of a large deciduous tree or edging lawns. They mix well with winter aconite, which flowers at the same time.

Glory-of-the-Snow Chionodoxa plant chionodoxa now, and enjoy a river of blue flowers in early spring. They will quickly naturalize, reproducing and expanding its spread with every passing year. Growing them is as simple as planting the little bulbs in fall, dusting off your hands and walking away. They’ll spread on their own. The small, six-petal flowers bloom in small clusters. In addition to the common variety with its rich blue flowers that look all the more vivid due to the striking white centers, they also are available in white and pink. No matter what color you grow, all glory-of-the-snow make great cut flowers and are the perfect size for a bud vase. The botanical name is a portmanteau word derived from from the Greek word chion, which means snow and doxa, glory. As the name suggests, in many regions the plant blooms early enough that the flowers sometimes poke through the snow. Around here the flowers peak in March and April. Native to rocky mountainsides of western Turkey, these bulbs aren’t too picky about where they’re planted as long as there is good drainage. Bulbs in general are at a higher risk of rotting if grown in overly moist soil. It can tolerate drought, which makes them ideal in deciduous forests where they get the sun they need before the trees leaf, and then remain dry when they’re dormant. Set the bulb about two to three times as deep as it is wide; a 1-inch-wide bulb should be planted 2 to 3 inches deep.

what to plant

Mini Daffodils You’ll Love Miniature daffodils are not a separate division (in the daffodil world there are 13 divisions, which sort the flowers into categories such as large cup and small cup, and by species such as cyclamineus and poeticus), but cultivars and species that grow 6 inches tall or less. Climate, soil and site conditions will influence the size of the plants. An excellent source for a wide variety of miniature daffodils is Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, a family business in Gloucester that has been growing bulbs since 1900. Their favorite miniatures include: • ‘Baby Moon’: Division 7, jonquilla; A golden yellow, multiflowering clone of the jonquilla species, it has grasslike foliage and nickel- to quarter-sized, sweetly scented flowers in late spring. Introduced in 1959. • N. bulbocodium conspicuous (hoop petticoat): Division 13; Grasslike foliage and stems support golden yellow flowers that resemble a hooped skirt or a megaphone. If left undisturbed, they will spread. Flowers in midspring, introduced in 1800. • ‘Chit Chat’: Division 7; An American-bred jonquilla that produces clusters of tiny, all-yellow flowers in late to midspring.

• ‘Chiva’: Division 7; A vigorously flowering jonquilla, it produces yellow, sweetly fragrant blooms. It is perfect for rock gardens, containers or as a daffodil show entry. It flowers in midspring. • ‘Hawera’: Division 5, triandrus; A New Zealand hybrid, it produces a multitude of elfin, pale yellow nodding bells with short demitasse cups and swept back petals. It is one of the most adaptable daffodils, thriving even in partial shade. • ‘Little Gem’: Division 1, trumpet; Golden yellow trumpet flower that force well and look great in strawberry pots, as well as in the garden with other tiny early blooming flowers. Introduced in 1938. • ‘Minnow’: Division 8, tazetta; In midspring, this charmer produces 3 to 5 fragrant flowers per stem. Each has white or yellow petals and a tiny, buttercup-yellow cup. • ‘Sun Disc: Division 7, jonquilla; Blooming in late spring ‘Sun Disc’s’ sweetly scented flowers have overlapping, rounded petals that are buttercup yellow petals. The disc-shaped flower has a small cup in a slightly darker yellow. The foliage is dark green and narrow. • ‘Xit’: Division 7, jonquilla; ‘Xit’s’ perfect little flower is so white it almost has a blue tinge. A very special daffodil for that very special spot in your garden. This mid-late spring bloomer was introduced in 1948.

Scilla another easy-to-grow minor bulb that has a great visual impact when planted en masse is Scilla siberica, commonly called Siberian squill. The tiny plants are insignificant on their own, but plant a sparse drift in an area where they can spread, and before you know it you’ll have a carpet of the intensely blue flowers to gladden your early spring days. They reproduce both by bulb offshoots and self-seeding, making the multiplication process exponential. The clusters of flowers stand out among the sword-like leaves, which grow from the base of the plant and arch outward, making the flowers more visible. Each plant produces three to five flowering stems that are graced with a cluster of bell-shaped flowers. There also is a hybrid version available called ‘Spring Beauty’. It is similar to the species, except perhaps slightly larger, longer blooming and deeper blue in color. Siberian squill flowers shortly after

and anthers. Topping out at 4 to 6 inches tall, these crocuses are ideal for naturalizing in your lawn. By the time you need to mow, the plants will have receded underground to rest until next year’s early spring performance.

Designing with Minor Bulbs when it comes to these tiny gems, strength comes in numbers. To get the most impact for your spring floral display, group minor bulbs in clusters, with at least 25 plants. Play them off other features in your garden, such as a specimen rock or scattered around the foot of a tree. They also are charming at the front of a flower or shrub border, along walkways and naturalized along the margins of the woods. Plant them where they will be undisturbed so they can multiply and spread. Add major wonder to your early spring garden with minor bulbs. Their beauty enchants while their delicacy belies the fact that they are durable and hardy, many pushing through snow as the harbingers of spring.

oes the dream — the one in which high school sweethearts get married and live happily ever after — ever come true? It did for Lisa and Jerry Mallen. Lisa and Jerry first met after Jerry’s family moved from Wisconsin to Fairfax during his senior year of high school. Lisa was an old hand at meeting new classmates. As a daughter of a U.S. Military Academy graduate and an Army officer, this self-described “Army brat” had lived in nine states and two foreign countries by the time she and Jerry met. The couple stuck together through college on different campuses and married after graduation — Jerry from American University in Washington, D.C., and Lisa from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. They had three children: a son and two daughters. It all became part of the SPLASHES OF COLOR happily-ever-after dream with the Blue and family living in cities where Jerry’s red appear job (he spent 30 years with the Blue throughout Cross Blue Shield system) dictated. the home, One day in 1987, Jerry spread out such as in the a U.S. map. “Did you know there’s a dining room big lake in southwestern Virginia?” chairs (right) he asked Lisa. “I think we should and master bedroom take a look at it. Although retirement was still years away, the Mallens bought a lot in Park Place in 2003. Ten years later, the couple bought a second lot adjacent to the first one. They hired architect Craig Balzer and builder Jeff Sowder, who broke ground in 2015. In March 2017, Jerry retired, and the couple moved into their newly built home five months later. They enlisted the help of decorator Pat Cundiff of P.A.C. The Mallens decided to give back to the community by opening their home as one of eight that are featured on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour from Oct. 11 through 13. “Before we lived here, but when we rented houses in October, we would go on the home tour, and we always enjoyed it,” Lisa said. “It’s such an inspired way to provide funding for so many local charities,” added Jerry.

HOME TOUR

ow in its 29th year, the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, held Oct. 11 through 13, is a great chance to explore Smith Mountain Lake while giving back. Since its inception, the home tour has raised and distributed nearly $4 million to regional charities. It’s a great opporutnity to see beautiful lakefront homes — either by land or by water — as well as gather construction, decorating and landscaping ideas. The homes can be visited in any order, and on the following pages, you’ll find a list of directions by land and by water to help you. Traffic directors will be stationed at each home to help as well. By water, each of the homes can be identified by bright orange dock flags. By land, there is plenty of parking at the homes. There are signs along the roads that mark the turns; however, using a GPS device is recommended, as well as a map of the lake. If you’re headed out by water, be prepared for the trip. Check the weather forecast and carry enough fuel on board, along with a fully charged phone and properly fitting life jackets for everyone on board. And don’t worry about trying to visit all eight homes in one day. Home tour tickets are good all three days with one visit allowed per home. You can also take advantage of the numerous rest stops along the way. The home tour is Oct. 11 through 13, rain or shine. Homes are open Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets will be for sale at each of the homes on tour days. For advance tickets or to learn more about the charities the tour supports, visit www.smlcharityhometour.com.

Breckinridge Home

• In a protected cove off the Roanoke, the Breckinridge home is a ranchstyle home with a full walkout lake level. This home has several collections: a large array of wooden houses, numerous quilts, a thimble collection and P. Buckley Moss items. Homeowner Ron has an antique camera collection, and there are also vintage items, including an organ from the home of Confederate Gen. Jubal Early, an 1895 coffee grinder, historic family pieces and pictures from the Civil War and of relatives with ties to Presidents Jefferson and Buchanan. You may see volunteers in Civil War costumes. Homeowner Linda, a former dragon boat racer, is the “handyman” who laid the home’s wooden floors, built kayak racks and caught the citation striper mounted above the door.

There are two fireplaces: one in the great room and one in the master suite. P. Buckley Moss paintings of lake scenes adorn the hallway. There’s a hot tub on the deck outside the master suite, and the deck with glass railing extends the length of the house. The lot slopes gently toward the dock, which has unique, fun furniture and decor.

home has a large stone patio with a pool, a hot tub, a fire pit and a tiki bar. The Craftsman-style home features an open kitchen and a dining and living area. The kitchen has cream painted cabinets and dark painted island cabinetry. Off the kitchen is the sunroom/dog room with photos of their former dogs displayed on walls above the horizontal white-washed shiplap wainscoting. A focal point of the great room is the floor-to-ceiling, stacked stone fireplace. The home has many lake decorations and attractive paint colors throughout. The lake level has two bedroom suites and a great room with a bar and mini-kitchen. Luxury vinyl tile is a smart choice here for durability and water resistance.

(Home numbers below correspond to directions by land.) This trip will take about 15 minutes from Hales Ford Bridge at 25 mph. Beginning just below Hales Ford Bridge, travel downriver to marker R25, then carefully cross diagonally toward R24. Enter the cove about 200 yards beyond R24. Home is located deep in the cove. Following the cove, bearing left then right, the house is on the left with an eagle on the dock roof. Dock is limited to three spaces so there may be a wait. Look for orange flag on dock.

(About 10 minutes) Return to main channel and continue down river. Enter S-curve at R21 and pass R19 and R17. As you exit S-curve, steer toward water tower. Home (hidden from view behind trees as you approach) is white stone with light red brick trim around the windows. Look for orange flag on dock.

(About 18 minutes) Follow the Roanoke River channel downstream toward the dam, keeping marker R11 at Rabbit Island to your right side. Pass R8 on your left and Vista Pointe on right. Go around outermost island (closest to Smith Mountain) into mouth of Craddock Creek staying wide of shoal markers near C1. Steer toward the striped lighthouse in Craddock Creek, near C2A. Pass Mitchell’s Marina docks and enter the cove on right. Continue down cove and look left for striped awnings and orange flag on the dock.

(About 5 minutes) Follow righthand shore out of the cove, entering Hatcher Creek toward H1 straight ahead next to the white gazebo. Turn right into the cove before the H1 marker. Home is straight ahead before the cove bends to the right. Orange dock flag will be visible in front of brown house with green trim.

(About 15 minutes) Return to the main channel, heading toward the dam, passing Mitchell’s on the left and the lighthouse. Pass C2A on left, then C2 and R2, also on your left. After passing the dam, bear left toward marker W1 on the left shore across from the dam. Pass W1 on your left and follow left-hand shore into the left cove, then go straight ahead to tall beige home with large “K” and orange flag on the dock.

(About 18 minutes) Return to the main channel, passing the dam on your left and R2 to your right. Cross the big bay toward Vista Pointe. Pass R4, then R6 on your right and leave Vista Pointe and marker B1 to your left. Carefully cross the channel, keeping Bernard’s Landing condos on your right. Target cove is directly across the channel. Look for orange flag on second covered dock on left hand shore as you enter the cove.

(About 14 minutes) Exit the cove and turn right to continue up the Blackwater. You’ll soon pass B2/4/6/8 in quick succession as the channel bends west, passing Christmas Tree Island on your left. Continue up the Blackwater, passing B10A on your right. Pass B13 and angle left around Lucky Island. Look ahead on opposite shore for an old-style enclosed white boathouse on a point; target dock is two to the right of that. Look for orange flag on the dock.

(About 10 minutes) Head back out to Blackwater channel and turn left, upriver. Pass B19 on your left, giving it a wide berth to avoid oncoming traffic. Follow the Blackwater’s right shore as you round B22 and continue upriver. Pass B24 then angle across the channel toward B23 (Note: B23 is upriver from B24, a quirk on this section of the Blackwater). Home is third on the right side shore of the cove at B23. Look for orange flag on the dock.

OCTOBER 11-13

RETURN: Direct run back to Hales Ford Bridge would take about 50 minutes. Gas is available at Gills Creek Marina (at channel marker G2), Crazy Horse Marina (to left between B12 and B10) and the Virginia Dare Marina as you exit the S-curve.

SHORELINES Profiles

Visitors to Smith Mountain Lake may get the impression that there is virtually no poverty in the area; however, nothing could be further from the truth. As the national poverty rate (12 percent) has remained steady over the past decade, the rate in the three counties surrounding the lake has increased, according to Jane Winters, executive director of Lake Christian Ministries. For nearly three decades, Lake Christian Ministries has provided food, clothing and emergency financial aid to families in the lake community. And while these short-term solutions have proved helpful, LCM’s board of directors recognized that more needed to be done, which led to the formation of the New Tomorrows program in 2015. “It grew out of a reality that providing food, clothing and crisis financial aid, which were provided at LCM for 25 years, doesn’t necessarily evoke change in a person or lift them out of poverty,” Winters said. “New Tomorrows will help those ready to make change possible.” New Tomorrows has three main elements: recruiting and training volunteer partners to work with program participants (LCM refers to them as neighbors), working with area employers to identify job opportunities and providing educational tools to improve self-sufficiency skills. Partners are paired with a neighbor and are responsible for encouraging their neighbors, providing resources and guidance and, when needed, giving them a gentle nudge forward. Terri Ransome is one of the neighbors

in the New Tomorrows program. Earlier this year, Ransome went to LCM needing help. “I was in a really bad place when I went there,” she said, recalling her first visit to LCM. “I was made to feel welcome. I left with a car full of groceries and made to feel like everything was going to be OK.” After being referred to the New Tomorrows program, she was paired with her partner, Roy Brooks. “They just don’t get any better than that,” Ransome said of Brooks. “He was encouraging, full of wisdom and positive. He said to me, ‘You

know, we’re going to make some stuff happen.’ ” One of the current educational tools for New Tomorrows is “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World,” a course that helps people in poverty to build resources for a more prosperous life for themselves and their families. Held each Wednesday night for 16 weeks at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, the curriculum takes participants through a self-discovery process that allows them to examine their own experiences with poverty (and issues related to poverty), to create self-empowerment tools and to give them plans to work toward self-sufficiency. LCM neighbors and their partners attend the weekly classes together, as well as the meals that are offered beforehand. Ransome said the class has helped her tremendously. “I’m now using a budget,”

she said. “I have the knowledge to budget wisely.” By being in class with other New Tomorrows neighbors, Ransome said she doesn’t feel isolated in her situation and has made many new friends. “That can be encouraging to know you’re not the only one out there,” she said. Since that first visit to LCM, Ransome is now employed part time and has a side cleaning job that provides her with a steady income. “I’ve never found an organization like Lake Christian Ministries,” she said. “They gave me the hope that things were going to improve. When somebody believes in you it’s a lot easier to accomplish.” Relationship building is the linchpin to the program’s success, according to Susan Hughes, who was hired by LCM to serve as New Tomorrows’ program director. “A lot of people in poverty might not have the best support system,” she said. The program helps participants build that support system by providing a trained, empathetic partner and offering them the opportunity to build relationships with other neighbors in the program, Hughes said. Although the Getting Ahead class lasted only 16 weeks, Hughes has kept the connection with New Tomorrows’ neighbors going with other classes, including “Eat Smart, Move More” that promotes healthy eating, active living, safe food handling along with tips for thrifty food shopping, as well as another class on money management. “We wanted to continue to offer classes that gave us some connection through the summer between the Getting Ahead classes,” Hughes said. “Since supportive relationships are a big factor in the ability for people to make lasting change, we wanted to continue to provide a supportive community where individuals could tie in while learning and building their resources.” Sarah DeLeon credits New Tomorrows with not only helping her get her life back on track, but also with making new friends. “I didn’t realize I would meet others in the same situation. I’ve made some great friends,” she said. “Our partners are so involved and go to great lengths to help

how to help

Walk to End Poverty To help offset costs associated with the New Tomorrows program, as well as provide emergency aid to those in need, Lake Christian Ministries is holding a Walk to End Poverty fundraising event on Sept. 14 (Laker Media is the media sponsor). The walk, which includes a 5K (3.1 miles) and a 10K (6.2 miles) will take place (rain or shine) at Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. with the walk starting at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served starting at 11 a.m. Runners and walkers, participating as individuals or on teams, are invited to participate. The registration fee is $10 ($5 for children younger than 18). For more information and to register, visit www. lakechristianministries.org.

us toward our goals. We love the program.” Lisa Corinha moved to the area in January with her 12-year-old daughter after recognizing the need to make a radical change in her life. “I have a wonderful partner who helps me feel optimistic about the future,” she said, adding that her partner provides her with encouragement, connections for job interviews and helps with insurance problems.

Recent participants in New Tomorrows’ “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World” class. A key focus of the program is showing neighbors that they’re not alone in their struggles and to make connections with others.

Corinha also found employment as a pharmacy technician at a local grocery store and has aspirations of attending nursing school to become a licensed practical nurse. Based on the positive results of the New Tomorrows program during its initial four years, plans are to expand the program to accommodate more participants in the future. It will also include a partners mentoring process, more educational and lifestyle improvement classes and job readiness and placement services. Most recently, LCM hired Angela Hill to work with Hughes and serve as coordinator for the New Tomorrows program. “We are moving from a transactionbased program to one based on relationships,” Winters said. “That’s why we hired Susan Hughes as New Tomorrows’ program director; we’re advancing to the next phase of New Tomorrows.” The next class of “The Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World” will start Sept. 4, followed by another class in January. Hughes encourages anyone interested in becoming a partner with New Tomorrows to contact her at lcmntdr@gmail. com or 540-297-3214. “We are always looking for additional partners; someone who is willing to listen and help guide a neighbor toward his or her goals,” she said.

ISLANDS A popular lake summer pastime is getting on your favorite float and just hanging out. These days, oversized inflatable islands seem to be the norm. What began with floating trampolines and hot tubinspired lounging seats has since hatched into bird-inspired inflatable islands that look like swans, peacocks, cockatoos and pink flamingos. Some even come with built-in sun shades and coolers for all-day lounging. Over the summer, Laker magazine captured just a few that were discovered floating around the lake.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

Dock Tale Hour

By Kimberly Dalferes

I

do loves me some fun in the sun. We’re quite fortunate here at Smith Mountain Lake, being that our season of frolic often extends into September. If our lake remains an acceptable bath water temperature equivalent (remember, Florida girl here), I’ll happily take a swim during a fall football game half-time. I’ve even experienced an Indian summer when I gazed upon the beginnings of the seasonal foliage color turn as I reclined in my favorite floaty. I’ll share that my preferred flotation device is not one of the trendy humungous inflatables. Please hear me out before you initiate a hate mail storm. The enormous bright pink flamingos, rainbow unicorns, neon yellow rubber duckies and multi-person uber-rafts that have populated our coves these past few years are super cool. As a matter of fact, the Hubs and I are on our third giant party raft. I’m not disputing that these water toys offer endless enjoyment. However, these contraptions also bring with them a litany of PIA factors: pain in the a$$. To begin with, don’t even think about purchasing a giganto-float unless you also buy an electric air pump. I don’t care if you have the lung capacity of Michael Phelps; you’re going to need to splurge on a quality pump. I do believe some of the floats come with a hand pump. Trust me, spring for an electric pump. An additional tip: look for an electric pump that works in reverse to also help deflate the float. After spending hours trying to collapse our floating island, the Hubs finally saw the light and invested in a heavyduty air pump that works in reverse. This next PIA factor might be more of an issue for those of us in Club 55: there’s just no way to gracefully board these vessels. If you’re going to drag yourself out of the water and up over the sides of a giant float or raft, be prepared to check your ego at the dock, because you’re going to resemble a beached walrus trying to hurl itself back into the surf. I’ve awkwardly displayed my middle-aged backside to

Pain At The Air Pump Giant inflatables are all the rage on the lake, but give me a solo float any day pretty much everyone in our cove on multiple occasions. And, ladies, if you’re sporting a two-piece, hold on to that top. We’ve witnessed several bikini malfunctions whilst attempting to come aboard. There’s also the issue of, no way to put this delicately, peeing. It happens without fail: as soon as you’ve hauled yourself atop that giant floating ostrich, you’re going to need to get rid of those three beers you just consumed. Our multiperson float does have the advantage of a meshed center area where you can sit

suspended in the water. One of my besties dubbed it the “sit-n-pee.” It’s a bit of a genius design feature. If you’re out and about these fall months, and the water’s fine, stop by the dock. You’ll likely find me on my favorite single-person raft, content in my late season chillin’. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
