Jane was masterful in guiding us through the sale of our home. It was such an emotional time, having been there for 20 years, but she gently led us through the process with her positive approach and her connections. Our home sold quickly and things went very smoothly. We would highly recommend Jane to anyone looking for a realtor.” - F. Weiloch, Google Review

ust as WE all thought there would be a return to

life as we once knew it, the coronavirus pandemic continues to linger and has forced the cancellation of annual events many of us look forward to this time of year, including the Smith Mountain Wine Festival, the Antique and Classic Boat Show and Festival and the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. But don’t despair! Your favorite magazine is here to distract you from the new everyday normal and provide you with entertaining stories. In this issue, we set sail with a couple of the lake’s fishing guides who will offer tips and tricks to find the elusive striped bass. And just in time for Halloween, our gardening columnist will offer step-by-step instruction on how to make a spooky, smoking pumpkin. Plus, don’t miss the latest installment of Dock Tale Hour and discover how one industry, the boat rental business, is booming during the pandemic. As always if you have questions or story ideas, send them to us. We’d love to hear from you! Email us at editor@smithmountainlaker.com. Stay safe and be well!

It might still be warm out, but fall is just around the corner. See Catriona Tudor Erler’s tips for creating spook-tacular jack-o’-lanterns starting on Page 30.

The word sounds pretty, but don’t name your daughter Anabaena. In late June this year, after weeks of heavy rainfall, lake residents began noticing a scum of slimy blue-green alga floating in parts of the lake. The offender is Anabaena circinalis. Worse than being unsightly and unpleasant, Anabaena circinalis is dangerous. It produces neurotoxins that are destructive to nerve tissue. Swimming in water with Anabaena circinalis present can cause nerve damage to humans and pets. This alga growth is stimulated by a surfeit of nitrogen in the water, which occurs when runoff from heavy rains washes fertilizers (most rich with nitrogen), pesticides and herbicides into the lake. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reported that runoff from lawns, roads and rooftops are a primary cause of pollution in waterways. Unfortunately, lakefront properties with extensive lawns can contribute to the problem. In an effort to prevent homeowners from stripping their land of native vegetation, Appalachian Power’s Shoreline Management Plan prohibits lakefront homeowners from removing existing plants within the 800-foot contour — unless they substitute other native plants that fulfill the same environmental function as the plant that’s removed. Nevertheless, many properties have been stripped of native plants — or any vegetation other than lawns. To solve the problem — and to make the landscape more interesting — homeowners can help by planting buffer gardens of native plants along their waterfront. Called a riparian buffer (riparian refers to the banks of a river, stream, or lake), ideally the bed should extend a minimum of 25 feet behind the riprap, and cover 50% of the shoreline frontage. However, even a small buffer is better than nothing. There are many benefits, both aesthetic and environmental, to planting native species along the shore: • The shoreline plants filter rainwater and melting snow from the surrounding watershed, preventing fertilizers, pesticides and other pollutants from entering the lake. • Native plants usually survive adversity by establishing extensive root systems that burrow deep, improving the soil structure and its ability to hold water. This network of roots 22

is like living cement, adding strength to existing riprap, or possibly delaying the need to install it. • Increased plant diversity adds to the beauty and interest of the shore, as well as reduces the risk of a pest or disease infestation that occurs when the landscape is a monoculture. • The plants are an important habitat for wildlife, including butterflies. • The plants act as an effective barrier to geese and ducks, keeping them out of your garden and off your now smaller lawn. • Native plants are low maintenance; they require no fertilizer (they grow leggy and unattractive if fed) and little or no watering once they’re established. • By reducing the size of your lawn and turning the shoreline over to native plants, you’ll save time and money on mowing and fertilizing.

native trees, shrubs, wildflowers (known as forbs), grasses, and sedges, effectively creating a wild meadow. However, a traditional mixed border of ornamental plants will do the cleanup job effectively. The palette of available native plants (not all are native to the lake, but they are compatible with local conditions), is extensive, and their blooms are attractive. A buffer garden does not have to look like a weedy mess. Nor should it block your view to the water. Create your design so that the buffer planting frames your water view, adding depth and ever-changing seasonal interest.

How to Plant The ideal planting time is the fall (spring is the next best), but before you set to work digging, first draw up a planting plan. Begin by measuring the length of shore you plan to plant, and multiply that by the depth to get your square footage. If your shoreline is too long to manage in one go for personal energy or budget reasons, start with a portion for this year and enlarge the bed as you can. Draw a plan on graph paper, placing grasses and sedges in a loose grid approximately 3 feet apart. Then add in a variety of wildflowers (forbs), spacing them within the grid of grasses and sedges. On average, plan for one plant for every

Power Perennials for a Lakefront Border is one that works hard, not only protecting the lake from pollution by taking up nitrogen from the soil, but also attracting pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. To top off their merits, they’re deer resistant. These plants pack a big punch for beauty, form and function. This chart is excerpted from the Smith Mountain Lake Association Recommended Plant List for deer-resistant natives, which can be found on its website, smlassociation.org.

1 ½ square feet, with about half being grasses and sedges and half wildflowers. Also add some trees and shrubs to give structure and mass to the design. The charts of power perennials on pages 26 and 27 include information on bloom time. Plan for a mix of flowering plants that blossom in different seasons so you have continual floral interest throughout the growing season. Generally you do not need to amend the soil for native plants, although rocky ridge soil may need some improvement. However if you already have a lawn, you’ll need to kill it. The best organic way to kill off the lawn is to smother it. Cover it with thick layers of newspapers and/or cardboard and then wet the cover so it becomes soft and soggy. Top the paper and cardboard with organic mulch several inches deep. Once the smothering cover is in place, you can plant immediately. Simply cut through the layers of mulch, paper and grass, getting down into the soil. You want to make sure the new plants’ roots are properly in the soil; otherwise, they will dry out and die. Tuck the mulch back around each plant, keeping the mulch about ½ inch away from the stems. Finally, water well so the roots get a deep soaking. By spring the covered grass will be dead and the rotted organic cover material will nourish the newly sprouting native plants.

Caring for Natives is they require minimal maintenance. They don’t want to be fertilized, and once they’re established, all you’ll need to do is tidy up dead vegetation in spring, deadhead spent flowers and cut back the occasional weed (pulling weeds disturbs the soil, bringing up new weed seeds to sprout). However, for the first two years you do need to be vigilant about seeking out and cutting back weeds so that the desired plants can get a firm hold. Check every two weeks, and cut the weeds to the ground. Also provide supplemental water the first year until the root systems are well established. Watering deeply encourages plant roots to penetrate deep into the soil. Shallow watering encourages roots to stay near the surface. A layer of mulch between the plants will help restrain weeds and maintain soil moisture. Do your bit to prevent algae infestations and pollution in the lake. Invest now in planting a riparian buffer for the long-term dividends of a beautiful landscape that requires less work than a traditional suburban lawn, attracts wildlife and promotes a cleaner lake.

carving pumpkins and putting our masterpieces on display ranks as one of the favorites. This year consider kicking up the scary effects a notch with misty fog emitting from your jack-o’-lantern. There are three ways to achieve the effect, which brings to mind mist hovering over marshy fens, inspiring the legend of Will-o’-the-wisp.

Dry Ice and Water frozen to -109 degrees Fahrenheit, known as dry ice, will create a scary fog that wafts out of your pumpkin creation. Simply put a chunk of dry ice in a glass or can of water inside the pumpkin and let chemistry work its magic.

You can create this spooky jack-o’-lantern effect with dry ice, boiling glycerine, or a garden fountain fogger.

For the most effective display, make the jack-o’-lantern’s mouth small and use a tall glass or can that reaches near to or even above the jack -o’-lantern’s eyes. Carbon dioxide fog sinks, so the tendency will be for more fog to flow out of the mouth of your jack-o’-lantern than through its eyes. The closer the container is to the “ceiling” inside the pumpkin, the more likely the fog will flow out through the entire carving. When it’s time for the spooky fog display, set your chosen container full of water inside the jack-o’-lantern. Wear heavy protective gloves (dry ice will burn Photo CATRIONA TUDOR ERLER

Foggy Fun Heated glycerine makes a spooky vapor for your jack-o’-lantern. For this method, you will need the following items (see instructions in the story starting on Page 35): 1. Sturdy wire you can cut and shape into a stand. 2. Needle-nose pliers with wire cutting blade (or separate wire cutters). 3. Small aluminum bowl (such as from a cat dish or single-serving frozen dinner). 4. A few votive candles. 5. Glycerine (available at most craft stores). 34

your skin) while you hammer off chunks from the towelwrapped block. Using tongs, drop a piece of dry ice into the water. Replace the pumpkin’s lid, making sure the fit is snug so the fog escapes through the facial features and there aren’t air currents from above. As the carbon dioxide disperses, shrinking the piece of dry ice, add more to continue the display. Dry ice is available at most grocery stores, including Walmart (call the store before going to be sure they have it, and if they don’t, ask where else you might look). Because dry ice sublimates (the process where a solid turns into a gas), purchase it the day you plan to use it. By the next day, your block of dry ice will have vaporized into the air. To pick up the dry ice, bring a hard-sided cooler and a towel to wrap the ice (do not store in metal or glass containers). You’ll also need heavy work gloves if you will be handling the block. Go to the customer service counter with your request. Plan to go straight home after picking up the dry ice. Once out of the deep freezer, sublimation begins immediately, and the cooler will not contain all the released carbon dioxide. For all but the shortest drives, also keep your car windows open for good ventilation, and when home, place the cooler in a well-ventilated space.

The Glycerine Method and known as glycerol, is an odorless and colorless liquid typically made from vegetable or animal fat. When it boils, it makes vapor. You can buy it at the grocery store or pharmacy. Supplies you’ll need for your glycerine fogging jack-o’lantern include wire you can shape and cut to make a stand, needle-nose pliers, wire cutters, an aluminum bowl, such as a single-serving, disposable potpie dish, four votive candles or a Sterno can and the glycerine. First make a stand with the metal wire. It will be a tripod with the legs attached to a wire ring you’ll make that will fit around the aluminum dish. Begin by wrapping a length of wire around the aluminum dish to make a circle where the dish will nest. Tie the wire around itself to form the circle, and allow an extra length of wire before cutting to create the first leg of your tripod. Cut two more wire lengths for the second and third leg, making them about the same length as the first. Attach the two other legs to the circle at equal distances by twisting the end around the wire circle. When the stand is completed, press the three legs into the bottom of the pumpkin, making sure the structure is stable.

Place four tea light candles or a Sterno can underneath the wire stand. When you’re ready to get the pumpkin “smoking,” light the fuel, pour glycerin into the aluminum dish and carefully set it into the stand’s circle. As soon as the glycerine has heated enough to boil, steam will start emitting from the pumpkin’s carved face. After Halloween use the leftover glycerin as a moisturizer to treat dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and minor skin irritations. It also has antimicrobial and antiviral properties and is approved by the FDA to treat wounds. The Red Cross reports that wounds treated with an 85% solution of glycerin show reduced inflammation after roughly two hours.

Garden Pond Fogger There are a number of inexpensive garden pond foggers on the market, some with colored lights, as well as the fogmaking capabilities. Once equipped with this gear, you can bring out the fogger for your annual spooky jack-o’-lantern display. You’ll need a large pumpkin to allow for a reservoir of water in the bottom of the hollowed-out shell. Carve the pumpkin, making sure the mouth is well above the space you need for the reservoir, and cut a notch in the lid on the back side for the electric cord to pass through. Add water. Insert the fogger, which will float just below the water surface. Plug it in, and enjoy the constantly changing emissions

Once glycerine starts to boil (top), it produces a satisfyingly spooky vapor. Float a fountain fogger (above) inside a large pumpkin, or set the pumpkin with a hole in the bottom over a bucket or basin and float fogger in the basin. The mist will float up through the pumpkin’s face.

of spooky fog. If you prefer to use a small pumpkin, you can float the fogger in a water-filled bucket or bowl. Choose a bowl size that allows you to nest the pumpkin into the bowl’s rim. Cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin for the fog to travel up into the hollowed shell and set it on top of the reservoir. Hide the container with artistically draped fabric. instead of tossing the pumpkin seeds along with the pulp, turn them into a delicious and nutritious Halloween snack. You can do the same with the seeds inside uncarved pumpkins once they’re no longer wanted for decoration. Separate the seeds from the pulp and rinse them in a colander until they are clean. Spread them on a rimmed baking sheet in an even layer and pat them dry with paper towels. Alternatively you can air dry them. It’s all right if they are still a little damp when you are ready to roast them; they’ll dry out properly in the oven. There are all sorts of recipes for roasting the seeds ranging from spicy versions highlighting the tastes of different cuisines such as Thai or Indian, sweet versions, and the basic butter, olive oil and salt combination.

These t wo words, while rather une xciting

on their own, can spark pure thrill and adrenaline when put together. For first-timers and active anglers alike, Smith Mountain Lake is a well sought-after fishery with a healthy supply of smallmouth, largemouth and striped bass. The particularly elusive of the bunch are the striped, commonly known as stripers. These fish are constantly moving and can have unpredictable behavior, making it all the more gratifying to get them in the net and bring them on board. The process of catching a striper is not as simple as casting a line on a shoreline with a bobber. Not to say that isn’t also fun, but it will not yield results as impressive. 42

SHORE LINES

On The Water

A crew of anglers casts several lines on a Sunday morning hunt for striper.

Equipment and Bait to reel in a sizable, photo-worthy catch, an angler needs

specific equipment, rods, reels, bait and tackle supplies. It helps to also have the latest technology on board to find the traveling schools of fish beneath you. As most guides can attest, a big part of their job is laying the groundwork and providing these things. It’s all about giving every angler of any skill level or age the best chance of reeling in some of the lake’s largest, most challenging fish. “We take a lot of the challenges out of it for them and we fish daily, so we know where the stripers are. That takes a lot of the headache out of it for them and makes it more enjoyable,” said Capt. Clint Gray, owner of Clint’s Striper Guide Service. As another captain, Robert Dean Wood, who owns Hooked Up Charters, puts it, by the time a person were to rent a boat and buy the necessary bait and tackle, they’d spend more money than they would by going with a guide. In fact, the bait fish of choice called shad, that stripers really love, are not sold in stores in Virginia. Instead, they must be caught.

Techniques and Fish Trickery Outside of the boat, rigs, line and bait,

44

main assets brought by a guide is the right way of combining them all. There are innumerable, unique methods these guides use to give their guests the best chance of a big catch. This might mean using different bait, putting a few planer boards off the back of the boat or even using a hand-fashioned stick of sorts to repeatedly hit the boat floor. Yes, this truly is a method, as wacky as it may seem, that has worked to create intrigue and curiosity in the fish. The idea is they swim upward to figure out where the noise is coming from, which takes them toward the bait. There are some things a person can only learn from fishing alongside someone who has come to master it.

Catching Memories Wood, who has fished the waters of Smith Mountain Lake for 40 years, started up his own guide service three years ago. “I built my new home here and started my guide business with the hopes of spending the rest of my life giving both young and old a chance to catch the fish of their lifetime here on Smith Mountain Lake,” Wood said. As a man who has fished all over the place, Wood said the lake is his home and his favorite place to cast a line with clients. “To me, every trip is a new story,” he said. “It’s the kids and young anglers that make memories for me.”

Experiencing the Thrill w hile guid in g a father an d son from roa-

half-day trip, Gray got to see the father, Chuck Swanson, catch the largest fish he’d ever caught in his life. For him, that’s a big part of what keeps his passion for guiding and for finding striper alive. “I just love striper fishing in general,” Gray said. “It’s a challenge to find them and when you do find them, it’s a challenge to get them to bite. In my opinion, it’s one of the hardest fighting freshwater fish that there is.” Gray has logged thousands of hours on the water and has been a guide on the lake for seven years, though he claims he’s “still pretty new to the game.” Some guides have been offering tours for decades, which goes to show what a valued pastime striper fishing is and has been for generations on the lake. There are more than a dozen guided striper fishing services to choose from, based in areas all over the lake. “Using a knowledgeable guide is the best way to get to know any body of water,” Swanson said. “It’s a fun way to spend time outdoors with family and friends.” For those seeking the thrill of a bent rod, a spinning reel and a battle to bring a striper to the surface, consider one of the lake’s guided fishing tours.

Reel ’Em In: Striper Fishing What you need to know about landing the big one. Striper fishing remains a popular pastime at Smith Mountain Lake for all ages.

Anglers use a variety of methods, such as drifting live bait, trolling plugs and bucktail jigs or casting top water lures. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries limits SML catches to 2 per day in the aggregate. There is no length limit from June 1 to Oct. 31, though no striper between 30-40 inches may be caught from Nov. 1 to May 31. 48

he boat rental business at Smith Mountain Lake has been thriving, especially during this year’s COVID-19 pandemic. “As the pandemic became news, we expected a real slowdown,” said Dwayne Lamb, who operates Captain’s Quarters Marina and Boat Rental with his father, Hank. “It turns out people are wanting to quarantine on the water. Business is up significantly.” The business has 25 vessels to rent, a mixture of pontoons and tritoons, deck boats and personal watercraft. “We could rent more if we had the dock and parking lot space,” Lamb said. Demand has also been strong at Bridgewater Marina Boat Rentals, which has been in business since 1989. The fleet has grown to 130 vessels and includes pontoons, tritoons, sport and deck boats and personal watercraft. Roughly half the boats are based at Bridgewater, with the others staged at five locations — Bernard’s Landing, SML State Park, Halesford Harbour, Crazy Horse Marina and Mariners Landing. Like Lamb, Bridgewater Marina partner Ryan Waters feared COVID-19 would quash demand for boat rentals. “Much of our season had been pre-booked by March,” he said. “Then the cancel-

with family as a break from being stuck at home.” Running Bridgewater Marina takes about 50 employees, and many of them are students who live at the lake or nearby, Waters said. “They love experiencing the lake, and we’re exposing them to a boating lifestyle they may enjoy for a lifetime.” It’s not unusual for their first job out of school to be with someone they’ve met on the docks, a path that Waters knows well. “I worked the docks for my dad during high school and then co-owned the SML Parasail boat during college,” he said. “Then I got hired by a man I’d impressed while renting him a boat.” A veteran of sales and then ownership in a bar/restaurant consulting firm in Raleigh, Waters has used his experience to rethink Bridgewater’s boat rental business model. “I realized there are many people who would rather pay to rent a boat for vacation than deal with the hassles and expense of boat ownership. But they want firstclass equipment — boats that look fresh and are reliable.” Confident he could also market well-maintained, used boats, Waters adopted an annual fleet rotation plan, similar to the ones used by the rental car industry. “We buy nearly all new boats every year, then 54

#1 Lender in Franklin County sell them after one summer’s use — about 150 to 200 running hours,” he said. “That’s really not much for the new, four-stroke outboards, and they typically transfer to new owners with a year or more remaining on the manufacturer’s warranty.” Waters resells much of his fleet each fall. Most of the marketing is word-of- mouth, but he also posts information about the sale online. “About half of what we sell stays at SML, but we’ve shipped boats all over the U.S., into Canada and even overseas,” Waters said. Jeff and Debbie Prowse, who own and operate SML Boat and Water Sports Rentals at Mitchell’s Marina and Campground, have also embraced a similar model. “When we started 11 years ago, rental boats on SML were typically well-used basic pontoons with tired 60-horse engines,” Jeff Prowse said. “But people who spend $3,000 and more to rent a house for a week will happily spend $1,000 on a nice boat that lets them fully enjoy the lake. They appreciate top-quality equipment that looks good and gives them no trouble.” This year, the Prowse’s fleet included 39 boats— pontoons, tritoons, deck boats and 19-foot to 21-foot runabouts. They also rent paddleboards, waterskis,

SUMMER FUN AT SML The fuel dock and watersports equipment shack at Mitchell’s Point have been activity hubs for boat renters throughout the summer.

“SML is an ideal place to rent boats. It’s clean, scenic, well-marked, generally deep with minimal change in water level and no low bridges. Most lakes in this part of the country can’t boast all those qualities.” R YA N W AT E R S

wakeboards and other towables. “The pandemic has been a perfect storm for boat rentals,” Jeff Prowse said. “People want a change of scenery, but aren’t comfortable flying somewhere and staying in hotels. We’ve typically been booked out two weeks or more in advance.” The business employs seven to eight dock hands and three employees in the rental office — locals and area college students who, Debbie Prowse said, work really hard, 10-hour days. “We’re a service business, and we want customers to have a great vacation and go away with a glow,” she said. “Our employees learn that approach.” Some rental operations cater to a specific slice of boat renters. Parrot Cove offers custom-built houseboats complete with water slides, galleys, barbecue grills and generators to power lights, heat or air conditioning while the boats are anchored. The 53-foot models sleep 10, while the 39-foot models sleep six. When renters prefer dockside delivery, SML Premier Boat Rentals can do just that, plus pick it up at the end of the rental. Owner Pete Luce customizes the process to include on-water training for inexperienced skippers. And ensuring boat rental operators are properly trained is paramount to safety on the lake. “Those who can’t show a current approved boater education card [from Virginia or another state’s NASBLA-approved course] must watch a 25-minute water safety video covering rules of the road, operator responsibilities, passenger safety, after-dark operation, wake responsibility and more,” said J.P. Hancock, who works at Bridgewater Marina. “We demonstrate safety equipment and the boat’s features and controls. We explain boat handling, anchoring, lake rules and boating courtesy using a checklist to make we’re sure we’ve covered everything.” A copy of the checklist also remains in the boat so renters can refer to it if questions arise. Waters and Prowse have recently joined forces to form the SML Boat and Water Sports Rental Association whose mission is “to provide rental companies with baseline requirements for operating in compliance with local, state and federal laws, and assure rental customers of voluntary compliance with the best business practices as established by the organization.” “We believe responsible behavior by rental operations, good safe equipment and thorough training of our customers is essential to continued success,” Prowse said. “We’re encouraging all SML rental operators to adopt essential business and safety standards voluntarily.” Waters added, “SML is an ideal place to rent boats. It’s clean, scenic, well-marked, generally deep with minimal change in water level and no low bridges. Most lakes in this part of the country can’t boast all those qualities.”

Since the tour has been postponed to next October with the same eight homes and charities that had been selected for this year, Laker magazine decided to take a look back at previous tours, as well as give a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to put the home tour together. his y ear has b een unlike an y other

as a way to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the tour has evolved over the years. The first Holiday Home Tour in 1991 featured 10 homes and a grand Fall Festival Preview Party. In 1992, the party became the annual MS Home Tour Gala and, for many years afterward, it was a much-anticipated social event at Smith Mountain Lake. In 1997, the tour became incorporated and changed its name to the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. Its mission is to provide funds in support of local and regional charities through a united volunteer-driven community effort.

Lake Homes For Love of Community

Today, an all-volunteer home tour board, representing various committees, meets year-round to provide updates on the tour’s progress. Sandra Morse, who has served as the home tour’s executive director for the past three years, estimates that board members spend a combined total of 1,000 hours annually in their roles. There are committees for tickets, publicity, sponsorships, and traffic, including route signs, directions and vehicle and boat parking during the tour. The home selection committee helps to identify potential homes and works out logistics with homeowners.

Anyone who is at least 18 years old can volunteer for the tour. Newcomers to the lake have often remarked that it’s a great way to meet new people and make friends.

Supporting the Tour

Ticket sales produce only about 10 % of what the tour distributes to participating charities with the lion’s share of profits coming from sponsors. Many of these sponsors are companies that have done work at the homes, including builders, kitchen and interior designers, cabinet makers, landscapers and lighting companies, among others. Other sponsors such as restaurants, realtors and gift shops, choose to support the home tour as it’s the lake’s

largest charity fundraiser. During the tour’s tenure, there have been 1,063 corporate sponsors. Individuals also can sponsor the tour and are recognized for their contributions on the tour’s website and in the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour guide. Charities that are selected as beneficiaries of the tour’s proceeds are the main fundraisers that seek sponsorships. These charities also do the critical work of recruiting volunteers to work in the homes during the three-day tour. Many of each charity’s supporters are

among those you see staffing each home on tour weekend, ensuring that guests have a wonderful experience. After expenses, the charities receive tour proceeds. In the early years, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was the sole beneficiary. That continued until 1997 when five charities were chosen, and the next year there were eight charities.

Giving Back Since its inception 29 years ago, the tour has given more

than $4 million to area charities. In addition to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 46 other charities have received tour proceeds. In the last nine years, proceeds from the home tour distributed to charities have averaged about $136,000, although the amount depends on several variables, including weather, ticket sales, sponsorships and advertising. That’s after expenses, which can vary from $25,000 to $30,000, to cover advertising and supplies.

Selection of Homes The home selection commit tee works to stay abreast of new construction and major remodels around the lake. Committee members may ask area builders or landscapers if they’re aware of any new projects, and some even troll the shorelines by boat and meet homeowners whose homes look new or interesting.

Facts & Figures A peak behind the curtain at the Charity Home Tour.

• The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is held over Columbus Day weekend in October. • Since 2004, eight homes are featured on the tour each year. (For the first 13 years of the tour, 10 homes were featured.) • The biggest homes have surpassed 10,000 square feet; the smallest one was 750 square feet. • Two sets of homeowners have been featured on the tour more than once: John and Whitney Brock in 1998 and 2005 and John and Mary Boyer in 2005 and 2016. • The most tickets sold was 3,547 in 2002. • More than 1,000 volunteers work in the homes over a three-day weekend. • Visitors typically come from Virginia and North Carolina, but there also have been visitors from as far as California and New Zealand. • About 6,000 shoe covers or booties are used over the tour’s three days. • About 80% of visitors arrive by car, though it may be the only home tour in the country where visitors can also arrive by boat. • Since 2017, it’s estimated that 100 to 150 boats or personal watercraft per year arrive to tour the homes. Lake Homes

The goal is to have homes in both Bedford and Franklin counties for the tour and to include a mix of new, remodeled, big and smaller homes.

Going on the Tour during the tour. Trained volunteers watch for any inappropriate behavior by visitors. Also, the tour is insured in the unlikely event that something gets damaged. Visitors are not allowed to bring children younger than 12, including babies, on the tour. In addition, high-heeled shoes are prohibited, and everyone must wear shoe coverings, or booties, over their shoes to prevent scratches and dirt from being tracked into the homes. Aside from this year, the tour always takes place rain or shine. If it rains, a volunteer is assigned to take all visitors’ umbrellas left at a home’s entrance to the exit for them to retrieve when they complete their visit. And the home tour does not fund any maintenance done to homes before the tour. Any spruce-ups that homeowners want done are up to them.

Each home is safeguarded at all times

Memorable Moments Like snowflakes, no two home tours have been the same.

Here are a few memorable moments: • A dock volunteer once fell off the dock of a home where he was working and was fished out. He went home, changed his clothes and returned for the rest of his shift. • A lady once tried to smuggle her baby into a home under her coat (she was caught). • A fresh-from-the-lake, personal watercraft operator came in a back door and walked right through and up the steps before he was stopped by a volunteer. • At a smart home, a visitor accidentally pushed a button, which turned everything that was electric in the home off. Curtains closed and fans stopped. Thankfully a representative from the company that installed the unit was at the home and restarted everything. “While the tour has evolved over the past 29 years, the mission remains unchanged,” Morse said. “It’s all about raising funds to help our neighbors who are in need of food, shelter, health care and other vital services.”

30th Anniversary Tour Lake homes that will be featured on the tour next October.

• The Howlett home is private resort, hideaway surrounded by 5 acres of woods.

• The 10,000-square-foot Walker home is loaded with natural materials and novel ideas.

• The Mele home, the first solar home on the lake, is a renovation of the original 1980 construction.

• The cottage-style Long home projects coziness, arty decorating and one-level living.

• The Pecoraros tore down an old home to build a new one on their prime point lot.

• The craftsman-style Waro home is new and sits on a lot with 300 feet of waterfront.

• The College home incorporates seven years of home tour ideas into its new construction.

• The English home has unique building materials, including lumber from 64 trees cut from the property.

I

By KIMBERLY DALFERES

here again. You fall in love, true love, just once, right? The kind of love that makes you change your life, do stupid things and reassess your priorities. The kind of craziness that wakes you up in the middle of the night full of ideas and thoughts of the future. However, lightning did strike twice. The Hubs and I fell in love with and bought a lake house. Again. Back in 2012, we made our dream of owning a home at Smith Mountain Lake a reality. After a full year of touring, viewing, studying designs and driving our poor real estate agent nuts, we finally landed on a beauty we nicknamed “Big Windows.” I still remember our first night in the new place, the Hubs and I dancing in the middle of an empty living room, laughing between shots of tequila and pronouncing “did we really do this?!” For nearly eight years we didn’t do much to her: some painting, pressure washing, mostly general upkeep priorities. Our shabby chic decor evolved as we filled her rooms with thrift store treasures and estate sale finds. The hydrangeas we planted out front matured into colorful pink and blue displays each summer. The front door got painted a fun shade of coral. More than anything, it’s the memories that brought us the most joy: 4th of July celebrations, a family Thanksgiving, watching my Floridian uncle play out back in the snow flurries. We gazed upon hundreds of beautiful sunsets from the back deck and lazed away countless cloudy afternoons, floating on rafts tethered together just off the dock. My second book was penned at a desk tucked away in the upstairs loft. Every so often we would start the “what if ” conversations: what if we could make the kitchen bigger? What if we had a place for all our books? What if we had another bathroom? We Photo GETTY IMAGES

Keys to Happiness In real estate, as in life, you never forget your first true love. But a bigger kitchen and mountain views certainly help. dreamed about what we might do to Big Windows, but we were for the most part content in our three-bedroom, three-bath little slice of heaven. Until … Two months ago, the Hubs mentioned that our real estate agent bestie Jane had a house she wanted to show us. It had been on the market for a while and needed a little love. “What’s the harm in taking a look?” the Hubs implored. Hmmm. Our reaction was immediate. The house for sale was quirky and fun, with cool weird angles and unusual finds around every corner. A huge kitchen called to me to rescue it from some seriously tragic floral and fruit wallpaper. A small but proper library begged the Hubs to fill its shelves with his mul-

titude of boxed books. A writer’s nook with a view of Peaks of Otter offered just the inspiration needed to really dive into the current work-in-progress. Within 48 hours we had made an offer. Big Windows is now sold to a wonderful family who will fill her with all their cherished memories. We’re here at the new place, too new to have a nickname. There are boxes to unpack and beds to be made and tequila to drink in an empty living room. The lake house adventure begins anew. Life sure is funny.
