Is a quiet cove more your style or being in the center of activity on the water more your speed? Is the accessibility to amenities, like golf, tennis, a pool, or social activities a consideration? How much maintenance do you desire? SML offers a full variety of these selections.

f you see me with a big, goofy grin on my face, don’t worry. I just love fall! And what’s not to love? Cooler temperatures. Leaves changing. And festivals.

Did you know that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival? From what started at The Manor at Taylor’s Store near Burnt Chimney as a one-day event to extend the busy summer season now has become a twoday extravaganza. We’ve got all the details for you about the festival’s history, as well as what’s new this year. Plus, we’ve compiled a list of other festivals that are happening around the area.

Also, mark your calendars and make plans to visit the homes on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour during the first weekend in October. You can get some really great ideas on renovation, new construction and even landscaping. Our gardening columnist has a profile of this year’s winner of our Lovely Laker Landscape Contest, and we will visit with one couple who enjoys putting together larger-than-life jigsaw puzzles with their friends and family.

She also purchased pieces from Reid’s Fine Furnishings and Present Thyme, as well as antiques from Black Dog Salvage, to supplement the look. The home is a unique blend of modern, sleek and industrial style, mixed with antiques, and rustic and natural elements such as wood, iron and stone. “Of the five contractors I interviewed, most of them told me it would be more economical to just tear it down and start over, but

I had so many memories here, I couldn’t do that,” Grove said. “We pretty much gutted the house. I wanted to retain the character they [her parents] created, but I kept the basic structure out of respect for them.” Her father, Lucian Grove, who owned Contracting Enterprises Inc. (he also served on Roanoke City Council and was influential in the revival of downtown Roanoke), had kept detailed records of the home’s construction. “For one thing, we had to replace the sewer line that was under the concrete pad of the house. Fortunately Dad had drawn a plan showing the exact location of the sewer line, so that took the guesswork out of the task,” she added. On the main level, the guest bedroom — formerly her parents’ room — has the same layout but, like the rest of the house, wood paneling that covered the walls has been removed. Another main floor bedroom has been eliminated to allow for a

The sunroom also was enlarged, and a master suite with an oversized window facing the lake was added. Outside, the deck overlooking the lake was widened to 10 feet and the surface is now easy-care Trex. On the lower level, two guest bedrooms are located as they were in the old house, but a bathroom has been enlarged. Outside, the length of the house is dedicated to a large covered patio with a kitchenette that includes a refrigerator, Green Egg cooker and a propane cooktop. Nice as the structural changes are, the real wow factors of the home are the natural materials, the art and the antiques. And then there’s extensive use of stone. The former brick fireplace was covered in stacked stone, as were the four giant pillars on the deck supporting the new roof. the driveway entrance. Near the lake, a fire pit features the same rustic stone in the seating area. The wood used throughout the home is equally spectacular. The doors are solid wood with dark trim, and the flooring is hardwood. In the great room, the ceiling was raised to cathedral height and is finished in wood that continues to the outdoor deck ceiling stained to match the doors. There also is antique wood on the mantel, around the mirrors in the bathrooms, on the cabinet next to the gas fireplace, on a piece of furniture and topping a half wall near the stairway. Most of these pieces sport ax marks, too. The quantity and quality of the art on the walls is phenomenal. There are oil paintings by Greg Osterhaus, George Solonovich, Diane Patton, Betty Branch, Katrina Bell, Joni Pienkowski, among others.

The other unique aspect of this home is the display of antiques that either came from Grove’s family or ones that she acquired to fit right in. There’s the family dining table that is now in Grove’s rec room, a Bavarian glass chandelier, which came from Grove’s parents’ home in Roanoke and now hangs in a bedroom. There is also a wash stand, an ice box from her mother, a writing desk from her father’s family and ironframed beds, as well as other pieces. “This brings back so many memories of my childhood,” Grove said. “Our family spent every weekend here. I learned to water ski when I was 8 or 9. When my cousin saw the house, she said, ‘You did a beautiful renovation. It’s the same, but different.’ I remember so many parties here, so many great memories! When I’m here, I feel like my parents, even though they’re now deceased, are here with me.”

F

ish have fascinated Deb Thomas since she was a child in Ontario, Canada. Often when moving, one of her first priorities is to build a fish pond. It was no different when she and husband Jim made plans to retire from Ohio to Smith Mountain Lake. She began designing a waterfall and pond for the front garden of their new home in Hardy in the winter of 2004, months before they made the move. Once they arrived in Virginia in 2005, the entire family pitched in to help with the pond construction. After a hired backhoe operator dug a 4-foot hole, Jim and his sons spent a weekend shaping the pond and digging shelves around the periphery. They used the excavated earth to create a hill for the waterfall. “I included deep areas in the design,” Deb said, “Because we wanted to make sure that the fish have places to hide from predators.” The depth coupled with discrete fish line stretched around the pond perimeter has kept out herons and other fisheating birds. LEFT Deb and Jim Thomas Once the digging was finished love to sit on and the EPDM rubber liner was the front porch installed, Deb began placing rocks to to enjoy their create the pond’s naturalistic edges “waterfront” and waterfall. In preparation, she did view. her homework. BELOW Some “I’ve spent a lot of time looking of Deb’s pet at streams to understand how the store goldfish stones are arranged in the wild,” she have been said. “It’s very important for me that with her for the pond mimic nature.” In addition 16 years. to studying nature, she read books on building ponds from the library and researched online. She began by sorting the stones by color, shape and texture. She would place the stones, study the effect and often rearrange them. “The color of the rocks, veins and surface striations are important,” Deb said. “I wanted to make sure that each stone’s markings and characteristics were in harmony with nearby stones.” For example, she would arrange white quartz rocks so the thrust and angle of each rock were all moving in the same direction, as if it was a large vein or deposit. She also laid stones up the sides of the pond, holding them in place with an adhesive called Touch ‘n’ Foam Landscape Exterior Filler. It is safe for fish and is a discreet black color. She also used Rock-on-a-roll, available online — a natural looking liner to help hide the black rubber edges. Her meticulous attention to detail turned a job she expected would take two or three weekends to complete into a two-month-long project. However, the results are worth all her effort. Rocks and plants are key to ponds that look natural Learn from nature Visit local waterfalls and take note of the rock formations and plant materials. Also, listen. The way water runs over rocks affects the sound. Take photographs to serve as a guide when you begin work on your own creation. The star-like blue Browallia speciosa flowers and the spiky Angelonia blossoms provide season-long color near the pond.

Use local stone Indigenous rock will look more natural — and probably save you money by not having to ship heavy materials over long distances. Root large rocks Like the tip of an iceberg, most large stones reveal only a fraction of the mass that lies below. To make a large boulder appear natural in its setting, bury a portion of it. Be aware of the thrusting direction of the rock’s grain and place so the stones all look as though they are emerging from the earth at a similar angle. Soften the edges Choose plant materials that will spill over the pond edge to obscure the liner and integrate the water feature into the greater landscape. Avoid rock necklaces The area under a waterfall is dug out by the force of the stream, pushing smaller pebbles and sand up to the outer edges. Design your pool to have the same characteristics by placing larger stones at the point where the waterfall lands. Scatter stones that radiate out toward the edges, getting smaller as they move away from the force of the falling water to the sandy rim.

look as at home in a woodland glade as it does in the Thomases’ front garden, and it is this year’s winner of Laker magazine’s Lovely Laker Landscape Contest. Once the hardscaping was completed, Deb began planting, choosing a wide variety of perennials, annuals and small shrubs to provide a long season of interest. Hardy waterlilies grace the pond’s surface and deer resistant plants surround the edges. Among the wide selection are ferns, astilbe, spirea, mint, creeping jenny, balloon flower, angelonia, ageratum and zinnia. The pond is stocked with pet store goldfish, many of which made the move from Ohio. Deb admitted that she’s become attached to these fish, and they respond to her. They come to her when she’s by the pond, and follow her as she moves around. Happy in their large space, the fish reproduce with enthusiasm. Unless hiding places such as water hyacinth’s roots are provided, “the fish eat their own eggs and fry, which keeps the population in

balance,” Deb said. At last count, they had 52 fish. Jim commented that they’re a lot easier to count in winter when the fish are inactive. To protect the fish in winter, they have a small pond heater that turns on only when the water temperature drops to freezing. It keeps a melted opening on the surface that allows oxygen to permeate the water. On warm weather mornings, you’ll find the Thomases enjoying a cup of coffee on their front porch overlooking the pond. In addition to enjoying the lively fish activity, the gentle sounds of the waterfall and the beautiful plantings, they love the wildlife visitors such as songbirds, turtles, frogs and toads that are attracted to the water. “Our house has water access, but isn’t right on the lake,” Deb said. “Thanks to our pond, though, we have our own private, peaceful waterfront.” As winner of this year’s contest, Deb Thomas will receive $1,000 in credit from Lakescapes Nursery in Union Hall.

kip and Vickie Larrington are big jigsaw puzzle fans, not just in terms of enthusiasm, but also in the sizes of the puzzles they put together.

Their most recent one, which now hangs framed in their lake-level game room, is 5 ½ feet tall and 15 feet long. “This was our biggest puzzle yet, 24,000 pieces,” Skip said. “Previously, our largest build was a fourth that size.” “A 24,000-piece puzzle puts you in a different league,” Vickie said. “It requires a strategy for getting it completed in a reasonable amount of time. Ours was to get friends to help — invite them to puzzle-making parties. But even with that, I figured we were looking at a two-year LEFT Vickie completion time frame.” Larrington holds one of four bags Having built about 100 puzzles that came in a together, the Larringtons were not 24,000-piece newcomers to the hobby when puzzle box. they undertook this giant. “Skip PREVIOUS PAGES was a puzzle fan when I met him,” Last September, Vickie recalled. lake residents Skip’s passion for puzzles goes Skip and Vickie back to childhood. “Mom and I Larrington took played games and did jigsaw puzon an oversized zles on rainy days at my uncle’s challenge and home on Webster Lake in New invited friends to help. Hampshire,” he said. “We lived there every summer until I was 12. When Vickie and I met, my apartment was already loaded with puzzles on the walls.” Skip and Vickie typically favor water-related puzzle scenes, although one of Skip’s favorites is an inscribed photo of Hidden Valley High School that was made into a puzzle. It was a gift from Skip’s colleagues when he retired in 2016 after 14 years of teaching chemistry and computer science at the school. Their first big puzzle, a 6,000-piece challenge, was a gift they built when they were living in Massachusetts. “We relocated to North Carolina, and the movers laid it flat on top of the load,” Skip recalled. “When we arrived at our new home, there were puzzle pieces on the back bumper of the truck, a bad sign. More were scattered among the furniture and boxes. Needless to say, the moving company had to replace that one.” They built the replacement on top of their dining room table, but had to break the puzzle into sections and put it away whenever they had company for dinner. “When we moved to Roanoke, it was more carefully packed,” Skip said. “Our house at the lake is the first place we’ve had room to display it.” Skip found the 24,000-piece puzzle by searching the internet for “big puzzles.” Titled “Life,” it features color-

ful sea creatures, exotic animals, sailboats and hot air balloons, as well as planets in the solar system. The strategy of inviting their friends to help began in September 2017 with an email to “come for lunch and help us start in our newest puzzle challenge.” After lunch, guests were given plastic cups of puzzle pieces dipped from one of the four bags found in the puzzle box. Guests then sorted the pieces onto labeled cardboard sheets, which helped speed up the puzzle’s assembly. “We were amazed at the progress made that first day,” Vickie said. “Skip and I worked at it some every day — I’m pretty much addicted — and a couple of puzzlefreak friends, Karrie Hadfield and Katheryn Case, came back after each bag-opening party session to help. In the end, it took only two months of pretty steady work to complete, far faster than we ever imagined.” As the final puzzle section neared completion, the Larringtons discovered there was a piece missing. They searched their home looking for it and reached out to everyone who had worked on it, but there were no positive replies, only sympathy messages.

Vickie submitted a claim to the manufacturer as part of its missing pieces guarantee. Because puzzles are die-cut into countable columns and rows, the missing piece was easy to locate — row 2, column 271. But the Larringtons could find no lot code on the puzzle box or insert, a requirement for getting that missing piece. After searching eBay, Vickie found someone who was selling the same puzzle who provided the lot code. While it took eight weeks to get the missing piece sent from the manufacturer based in Spain, the puzzle was finally completed. “Sure enough, the piece the manufacturer sent fit perfectly,” Vickie said. Reflecting on the process, Skip commented that people go about puzzlebuilding in different ways. Some try to find the piece for a specific opening, while others gather pieces with similar colors in a particular section. Skip’s preference is to put all pieces of a shape together in piles

LEFT The finished product was mounted into a picture frame that Skip Larrington made and now adorns the wall of their home at the lake.

and then search the piles when that shape is needed. “But the scale is misleading,” he said. “A fish that looks like it’d be made up of six pieces on the box picture might be 60. It takes a while to figure out the scale of the real thing.” Getting this behemoth of a puzzle framed was a challenge, too. “You can’t buy a 15-foot-by-5 ½-foot picture frame, so you have to make it,” Skip said. His solution was hardboard backing surrounded by standard door molding. To get the exact size, Skip extracted completed sections of the puzzle from storage, pieced together all the top-row sections on the floor and measured. “Amazingly, there was a full 6-inch

length difference when the pieces were snugged together,” he said. With the backing braced and framed, the couple’s daughter, Christie, painted white glue onto the surface while Skip positioned and connected adjoining sections. While the end result was heavy, more than 100 pounds, it did the trick. “It was more the unwieldy size than the weight that made hanging it tricky,” Skip said. The Larringtons’ next project is an 18,000-piece puzzle that they found at the SML Discovery Shop. For new jigsaw puzzlers, Vickie recommends picking a 500- or 1,000-piece challenge that has an appealing graphic. “It can be a fun family project for rainy days or any days, especially if you can leave it out and work in short spurts,” she said. “Kids as young as 5 or 6 can be good helpers, especially if they’ve cut their teeth on kiddie puzzles early in life.”

rom humble beginnings on the grounds of what was once The Manor at Taylor’s Store, the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival has become one of the most popular events at Smith Mountain Lake over the past 30 years. “We had community support from day one, and it continues to this day in a very big way,” said Vicki Gardner, executive director of the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce. When the wine festival returns to Crazy Horse Campground in Scruggs for a third consecutive year, it will be more spectacular than ever, according to Andrea Fansler, the chamber’s events manager. Some of the amenities featured this year include “larger than life” yard games, a VIP tent complete with all the comforts of home and a brew pub that will feature large screen TVs broadcasting the Virginia TechDuke football game, Fansler said. To celebrate this year’s milestone, special 30th anniversary T-shirts will be for sale, as well as raffle tickets for a chance to win a quilt made from festival T-shirts from previous years. Nearly three dozen wineries and 80 craft vendors have signed on to be a part of this year’s festivities. Live music will feature this year’s open mic winner of the annual Lyrics on the Lake Songwriters Festival as the opening act, along with headliners Weird Science, a New York-based throwback band playing music from the 1980s, ’90s and Pop2K, performing Saturday, and Barefoot West, a local favorite, performing Sunday. HOME TOUR

ow in its 28th year, the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is a great chance to experience Smith Mountain Lake at its finest. You’ll discover innovative ideas for building and renovating, as well as design, decorating and landscaping tips that you can adapt to your own home. The one unique aspect about this home tour is that homes are accessible either by land or by water. While the homes can be visited in any order, we have compiled a list of directions by land and by water to help you find your way. Traffic directors will be stationed at each home to help as well. From the water, homes can be identified by bright orange dock flags; on land, there is plenty of parking at the homes. Orange and black signs mark the turns along the roads; however, we also recommend using a GPS device, if you have one, and a map of the lake. Make sure, if you’re headed out by water, that you’ve properly prepared for the trip. Check the weather forecast, make sure there’s enough fuel on board, carry a fully charged phone and have a properly fitting life jacket for everyone. While it may seem daunting to visit all eight homes in a day, don’t worry! Relax, take your time and visit the homes at your leisure. Tickets are good all three days for one visit per home. Plus, there are rest stops along the way, which can allow for a funfilled weekend at Smith Mountain Lake! The home tour is Oct. 5 through 7, rain or shine. Homes are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. In the following pages, check out the by-water and by-land directions, as well as descriptions and photos of the homes.

Two lots were combined to form the 1.8-acre lot that encompasses more than 500 feet of shoreline. The great room has a two-way stacked stone fireplace and a beautiful high-ceiling. Upstairs are guest bedrooms and a loft for children’s games. The lower level has a unique stone-fronted bar with a rough-edge on the granite countertop. The dining room has a coffered ceiling, chair rails with wood panels underneath; the French-styled dining chairs were custom made in Italy. Built in the 1980s, the before photos look drab compared to the home’s stylish appearance with a new kitchen, an enlarged master suite, new sliding glass doors, updated stair railings, brightly painted walls and moldings and chic barn doors. This four bedroom, three bath home has an open concept in the main living areas, and it opens to a large deck. The second level loft area has three bedrooms, a bath and a game area. Carter Grove Home 116 Clement Drive, Wirtz On the Blackwater River arm of the lake, near the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center, the Carter Grove home is a renovation of the homeowner’s parents’ home. Built in 1968, walls were ripped out to enlarge the kitchen and open it to the great room, which is highlighted by a stacked stone fireplace with a 200-year-old mantel. The sunroom was expanded, and a new wing was added for the master suite. There are many antiques, some purchased and others from the homeowner’s family. Original hardwood floors are stained dark. This sleek, four bedroom, three bath home has a downstairs rec room and an outdoor porch kitchen. There is a plethora of fine artwork. The dock was completely redone; a fire pit and outdoor architectural walls were added. It’s an interesting mix of starkly modern and industrial style blended with antiques and art.

There are three bedrooms, including a master suite, and two full baths on this level. On the lake level there’s space for sleeping kids in a cute room with four built-in bunk beds and a half bath. sml CHARITY HOME TOUR Preview

Directions by WATER START: Water directions to the homes begin in the vicinity of Hales Ford Bridge, but homes may be visited in any order that suits your point of departure. (Home numbers below correspond to directions by land.) Boaters should prepare for a day on the water by checking all safety equipment, fuel and oil levels and making sure there are properly sized life jackets on deck (and preferably worn) for all crew members. Take along a fully charged phone, charger, lake map, sunscreen and sufficient hydration. Dock only at docks marked with an orange vertical banner or as directed by dock volunteers. GPS coordinates below are approximate, as are running times from one dock to the next. Should a breakdown occur, Sea Tow is available at 540-719-5555.

1. cruise home

2. Metzger Home

3. Hoots home

5. KOONTZ home

Pass under Hales Ford Bridge and travel 12-15 minutes up river, following the main channel markers and keeping toward the right side of the channel. After passing channel marker R42 to starboard, spot R47 ahead and across the channel (there is no R44 or R46). Angle left into the cove beyond R47, looking for a long retaining wall across the waterfront and large boathouse with wrought iron rail around its upper sundeck. The home has a three-story stone chimney and iron circular stairway to the upper deck. About 15-20 minutes above Hales Ford Bridge.

Exit the cove and travel back down river, passing channel markers R47, R41 and R39. Look for a red ball on the right near the Metzger dock with two more visible on the far side of their cove. The boathouse cupola has an eagle wind vane and there’s a gray stone fireplace on the patio up from the dock. About five minutes below the Cruise home or 12-15 above Hales Ford Bridge.

Follow the Roanoke River channel downstream, passing beneath Hales Ford Bridge and continuing past channel marker R27. Pass the island that sits between the mouths of Betty’s and Becky’s creeks, then angle right into Becky’s, the lower of the two. Pass three major points on the left (lower) shore of the creek. The Hoots’ dock is on the far side of the fourth cove. 12-15 minutes below Hales Ford Bridge.

Exit Becky’s Creek and continue downstream, passing channel marker R23. Stay to the right of channel, angling into the cove immediately before R21A. The home is on right, midway in the cove. Docking also is available one dock before and after. There is a relatively steep climb up stairs and a sloping path. 7-10 minutes.

4. KELSO home

8. Westbrook/Gillooly Home

7. labella home

6. Carter Grove Home

Access is available from the dock at the Koontz Home.

Continue downstream on the Roanoke, passing through the S-curve (channel markers R21-R18) and around R9 off Rabbit Island. Angle right with Bernard’s Landing condos to starboard. You are now in the Blackwater River. Continue past B2/4/6/8 as the Blackwater River turns west. Continue along the right center of the Blackwater channel and carefully cross after you pass B12, near the mouth of Gills Creek. On the far shore (directly across from mouth of Gills Creek) is the mouth of Silver Creek, which you will enter. The home is on the right shore, just around the corner from the creek entrance. 20-25 minutes.

Exit Silver Creek back out to the Blackwater channel above Gills Creek and turn upriver. Round channel marker B19, giving it wide berth to avoid any traffic coming down river. Follow the Blackwater’s right shore as you round B22 and continue upriver. Pass B28, opposite The Cliffs and go another half-mile before angling across toward a deep cove on the left. If you get to B30, you are beyond where you should cross over. 12-15 minutes.

Exit the cove and cross carefully to the far side of the Blackwater channel, turning between channel markers B31 and B32. Continue upriver, rounding B34 and B36 at the property point at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center. Pass three no-wake markers at the 4-H waterfront, spot B40, and travel 0.5 mile farther. The Grove Home is on the right, just before entering the cove with two no-wake markers and directly across from B41.

A

growing number of residents and businesses at Smith Mountain Lake have discovered the benefits of window tinting film to help reduce heat and glare from sunlight reflecting off the lake. Fifteen years ago, when Jim and Carla Laseter owned an east-facing condominium in Charleston, South Carolina, the morning sun was uncomfortably bright through their windows. After doing internet research, they decided to install window film on several of their windows. This proved to be the perfect answer. After moving to SML to live in the Waverly community, the couple was again looking for a solution to reduce both the glare and heat from the sunlight shining through their home’s expansive great-room windows. The west-facing windows made watching television a challenge in the late afternoon and early evenings. “There’s no question that if your home has an eastern or western exposure, your furniture will fade unless you find a way to cut the sun exposure,” Jim said. “And when you have a view you want to protect and enjoy, you don’t want shades or curtains obstructing it.” They decided window film was the best option for the home’s great room and lower-level windows, all of which have

panoramic views of the lake. “In the summer, the great room stays noticeably cooler than the bedroom, where window film was not installed,” Carla added. Window film was created in the 1960s as a way to control heat from the sun. Over the years, secondary benefits, such as fade protection for furnishings and glare reduction, were discovered. The three basic materials used to manufacture window film are polyester, metals or dyes for coloring and adhesives that bond the film to the glass surface. The amount and type of metals used determines the light shading and the color of the finished film. Shading ranges from blocking 10 percent to 95 percent of visible light. Films that block light in the 50 to 75 percent range are the most commonly used in residential applications. One of the biggest residential and commercial window film dealers in Central Virginia is OuttaSight Window Tinting in Lynchburg. The company provides window film products throughout the region, with about 20 residential installations at Smith Mountain Lake each year. They offer Llumar and Vista Window Films, locally manufactured by Eastman Chemical Co. in Martinsville.

Lake residents who prefer not to have curtains or window shades obstructing their view can opt to have window film installed on the exterior windows of their homes.

Window film can reduce direct heat coming through windows, reduce glare and decrease UV rays, which can cause fading to furniture.

OuttaSight President/Owner Greg Harrison is an example of a local entrepreneur who built his business from the ground up. He traces the origins of his company to a high school apprenticeship program, during which he worked for an automotive window tinting company. After a few years, Harrison started a mobile car tinting business. By 2004, his business had grown enough to open his own shop. Responding to customer demand, he expanded into residential and commercial film applications in 2005. Harrison also took over Solar Control Films in Roanoke, which specialized in residential and commercial film installation. Today, its founder, octogenarian Cecil Bingham, still works part-time for the company. Harrison said, “The films have some important beneficial impacts, such as reducing direct heat coming through the glass up to 80 percent, reducing glare as much as 90 percent and cutting UV rays, which have a fading effect on furniture,

“The films have some important beneficial impacts, such as reducing direct heat coming through the glass up to 80 percent.” by 99 percent.” Based in Charlottesville, Clear View Window Film Solutions, which has been in the business for more than 15 years, does approximately 200 residential installations each year, with about three to four a year at SML. Clear View sells 3M Window Films and Huper Optik, which, “is because of the optical clarity of the film, the performance of the products and their great warranties,” said consultant Blanton Bryant. “The views through our films are significantly better than clear glass because they soften the harsh sunlight giving the windows crisp, high definition views.” The installation process begins with an in-home consultation, during which the customer’s chief concerns are discussed,

as well as the film options that are available. Depending on homeowners’ needs, the dealer recommends a few choices and puts samples onto the glass. This lets the customer see how the film looks when in use at various times of day. A cost quote is also provided for the film options recommended. “Cost depends upon product choice, the size of each window, and any special equipment needed,” Bryant said. Once a selection is made, most residential installations can be completed in only one day. And don’t worry, none of the films will obstruct the views from your windows. They just make it more comfortable, like putting a pair of sunglasses on your windows.

his is a somewhat treacherous time of year for me. I’m not too proud to admit that I have a wee problem. On the grand scale of problems — world hunger, climate change, poverty, the Redskins’ quarterback issue — my predicament is rather inconsequential. However, self-awareness is the first step to recovery, so, here goes: Hello, my name is Kim, and I’m addicted to house porn. Hello, Kim! It baffles me that someone can be waiting in the check-out line at the grocery store and not be immediately drawn to the cover of the latest shelter magazine. As it’s now fall, everywhere I turn there are stunning images of front porches adorned in vibrant colors of burnt orange, deep red and Tuscan yellow, bedecked with mums, bales of hay and scarecrows. Headlines draw me in: “The Most Beautiful Fall Tablescape Ever!” “101 Ways to Decorate With Dried Corn.” “The Ultimate Insider’s Fall Festival Survival Guide.” “How to Get Your House Ready for the Relatives.” “What’s New in Grout?”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

So, why is this a dangerous time of year? Because the annual SML Charity Home Tour occurs in about a month. Uh-oh. My house porn addiction is not limited to the stacks of magazines teetering precariously throughout my house. I also seek out other ways to get my fix and home tours offer the perfect mix of voyeurism and inspiration. I can’t resist the temptation of the promise of a perfectly staged abode with well-lit rooms, a to-die-for chef’s kitchen and a remodeled shower the size of my college apartment. And the proceeds for access to such wonders all go to charity! Truly a winning combo. There’s no harm in looking and dreaming, right? There are some key differences between the occasional shelter magazine peruser and someone who is incapable of resisting all things house and home related. You might be a house porn addict if: • You’re saving the 1982 issue of House Beautiful for inspiration because you believe chintz is going to make a comeback. • You know the names of every host of every show on HGTV … and the names of

their spouse … and where they were born. • You honestly believe it’s possible to remodel a bathroom over a long weekend. • You know the difference between French farmhouse, modern farmhouse, traditional farmhouse and retro farmhouse styles. And you’re not a professional interior designer (but you think you’re a great amateur!). • Your garage is filled with dozens of half-used paint cans from all your DIY attempts. • You believe Martha Stewart should be President. Hey, this might not be such a bad idea. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the SML Charity Home Tour. I’ll be the one with notepad in hand and mouth agape as I wander through the lakeside beauties with poor Hubs in tow. Please take pity on him and ask him about fishing, football or anything except home décor — he’ll be your new best friend.
