October is also National Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15-10/15). We celebrate the accomplishments of our Hispanic brothers and sisters. We‘re excited about our interview with Eric Darius. He is such an incredibly talented young man. He took time out to speak with SPMG Media host LaTonya Washington about his new music and his life and being On A Mission. Welcome Miko Cannon Deale as an SPMG contributor. She hails from Georgia and will be contributing articles on a variety of topics. Miko is also CEO of Jamillians, a gift basket company. He can swing like the masters and funk like a hip-hopper; truly the blossoming of tomorrow's jazz.” The seeds have been sown and Eric Darius unearths his talents not only as a saxophonist but equally important, as a composer and co-producer on On A Mission. The saxman, who first started experimenting with writing at age thirteen, cites Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock as among his biggest compositional influences. Darius acknowledges that music has always been an outlet for him to express his emotions and experiences. The Tampa-based musician says, “Stevie Wonder is incredible
and I love the way his music can‟t be categorized. The same is true for Herbie Hancock. With Herbie, his whole music catalog varies from album to album and even to this day, he continues to evolve as an artist and is not afraid to take chances, artistically.”

The highest praise maestro, Duke Ellington bestowed on people or music he loved was the phrase ‘beyond category.’ Expanding on this concept, Eric Darius sets out to make an album of purely good music fusing all of the music that has inspired him along the way. A particular mission of Eric’s was to capture the same energy and vibe of his live shows in this studio recording.
“In the past I have tried to tailor my recordings to fit a certain sound or style that fits within the boundaries of what contemporary jazz is „supposed to be,” explains Darius. “This time around, I scrapped all the rules and said „I want to make music my way that best defines me as an artist.‖ Eric Darius‘ approach to playing is muscular, visceral, imaginative, technically proficient and soulfully free-spirited. It is evident that he is in his element when his reed presses his lips. The joy he derives from playing is evidenced on many songs on his latest release. “I think one of the staples of what I do is my live show; it is young and energetic! I wanted to bring this element to On A Mission. There is often a big disconnect from people‟s live shows and studio albums. "I want to make music my way that best defines me as an artist" Hailing from a musical family (his father from Haiti and mother from Jamaica) and raised in Tampa where he still lives, Eric Darius realized his calling for music at an early age. “ I remember being nine and hearing a saxophonist play at my church. I instantly loved the sound…I remember being blown away by the soul and emotion of the instrument. It was as if I could almost hear the words and lyrics with each note being played…it was at that point that I fell in love with the instrument. The saxophone has a way of reaching people in a way that no other instrument does. It is the closest to the human voice.”

Darius
is one of those musicians who was fortunate to benefit from music programs in the school system. He shares, “It is important to me that these types of music programs remain available for children today. One of my goals is to expose young kids to music with substance and to help make them aware that music can be an outlet for their emotions…that it can be a positive influence in their lives. I believe that music is a vital part of every child's complete education. I would not be here had it not been for the opportunities I had in school early on."

By age eleven—after only playing for one year—Eric was chosen to be in Sonny LaRosa and America's Youngest Jazz Band, which consisted of young musicians, ages 512. The group toured the country and even played at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Throughout Eric‘s young but already dynamic career, he‘s had the tremendous opportunity to travel and perform worldwide with numerous groups. Even as a college student, he had the fortune to travel internationally with the South Florida Jazztet (The University of South Florida is where he studied both Music Performance and Business). The much in demand saxmans‘ worldwide gigs include Japan, Indonesia, London, France, Italy, among numerous other countries.
Darius concludes, “As
a young person into jazz, it is important for me that the music stays alive and remains relevant in today‟s music scene. I am trying to bridge the gap and create music that appeals to all age demographics, especially the high school and college kids. I am bringing them music that they can relate to. I strive to make music that is always true to myself, and hopefully that will reach people. The greatest joy to me is connecting with people through my music. ” His friend and mentor, Dave Koz, may have summed it up best…”Eric‟s energy and musicality are undeniable. One Day It’ll All Make Sense Commentary/Review by Miko Cannon Deale
A week ago I was reading an article on book releases. I'd stumbled across an article on Common's new book "One day It'll All Make Sense", written by Common and Adam Bradley. I had to admit I was very intrigued by just the title. What was the purpose? Why did he pick that as the book‘s title? Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. aka Common had written a book. Wow! I love his music, but what would this book entail? I had to know! This memoir tells a story most have never heard. Beginning with the explosive revelation of 18-monthold Common and his mother being kidnapped at gun point by his father – this intimate work gives the reader a window into Common‘s childhood, teens, and his path into manhood - A journey that Maya Angelou proclaim as one from a rapper to eloquent poet. Each chapter begins with a letter from Common to various people in his life: His daughter, his mother, his grandmother, lost loves, Erykah Badu, fellow artist such as Kanye, Ice Cube, and even his fans. Common elaborates on his very public and controversial invitation to the White House from President Obama. His story is reminiscent of so many young black men in our inner cities. It‘s a well-written narrative about an unassuming Hip Hop icon who has managed to keep a relative low profile. A must read from the foreword to the books end. This je ne sais quoi of storytelling offers up juicy anecdote and stories that will be of interest to many. Now I understand and agree that the paths that intertwine on the boulevards of life…and the quest for success….WILL one day make sense. Curl up with this good book!

Author Interview…….Meg Cabot
What inspired you to create the character Mia from The Princess Diaries? Do any of Mia's characteristics, qualities, childhood (aside from the princess thing, of course!) relate to your own? I was inspired to write The Princess Diaries when my mom, after the death of my father, began dating one of my teachers, just as Mia's mom does in the book! I have always had a "thing" for princesses (my parents used to joke that when I was little, I did a lot of insisting that my "real" parents, the king and queen, were going to come get me soon, and that everyone had better start being a LOT nicer to me) so I stuck a princess in the book just for kicks...and VOILA! The Princess Diaries was born. The voice of Mia, of course, is taken directly from my own diaries that I kept when I was in high school...I still have them, though I am the only one who will ever be allowed to read them. I was pretty much a huge geek in high school—although I was pretty involved with the school's drama group. Most of what's in my journals from those days is about boys, boys, boys, and that's why I am the only one who is allowed to look at them! It is too embarrassing!
New York City is described in such rich detail. Do you feel the setting of a story is important?
My advice to writers is to write the stories you like to read. If you don’t love what you’re writing, no one else will. “ – Meg Cabot
I really do think New York City would be the best place in the world to be a princess (or, for that matter, a novelist). Where else can you walk outside your door and within half an hour be standing in front of a Vermeer, or a life-size wax replica of Whoopi Goldberg? I think setting is so important to a story. I like to give mine some good solid pavement to walk on. And Mia, of course, just had to be in the best city of the world, New York. What is the main thing that you hope teenage girls will gain from these books? I hope girls will realize that they are not alone in feeling the way I did when I was in high school—like a great big freak! Also that "normal" is not what they see on TV. Being true to yourself, and to your friends, is way more important that being part of the "in crowd." I am living proof that is possible to profit from being a high school freak. Do you think that like Mia, teenage girls are too judgmental of themselves and others around them? Oh, yeah. Not just teenage girls, either, boys too. And grown ups! We all need to take a deep breath and remember it's what inside that counts. What advice do you give to budding writers? My advice to young writers is: Write the kinds of stories you like to read. If you don't love what you're writing, no one else will, either. Don't tell people you want to be a writer. Everyone will try to talk of you out of choosing a job with so little security, so it is better just to keep it to yourself, and prove them all wrong later. You are not a hundred dollar bill. Not everyone is going to like you...or your story. Do not take rejection personally.
If you are blocked on a story, there is probably something wrong with it. Take a few days off and put the story on a back burner for a while. Eventually, it will come to you. Read—and write—all the time. Never stop sending out your stuff. Don't wait for a response after sending a story out...start a new story right away, and then send that one out! If you are constantly writing and sending stuff out (don't forget to live your life, too, while you are doing this) eventually somebody will bite! What were some of your favorite books when you were growing up? I read a lot of fantasy, such as the Susan Cooper 'Dark Is Rising' series, and the Lloyd Alexander books. Lately I am exploring all of the great books for girls that I missed because I was too much of a tomboy to read them, such as the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace. And I am a big fan of Mary Stewart—though many of her best novels are sadly out of print now. Where did you come up with the concept for your novel All-American Girl? I think every kid—and some of us grown-ups, too—fantasizes about being a hero. And what would be the most heroic thing of all? Saving the life of the most important man in the country, that's what! And that's what Samantha Madison does in All-American Girl—though of course she is ANYTHING but the all—American girl. Being a national heroine is a bit of a burden for her. Are there any similarities between Mia and Samantha? Samantha is a little older and a little wiser than Mia, but certainly the two girls share the same desire NOT to be a celebrity...and they both wear the combat boots in their families. How did it feel to have The Princess Diaries, made into a major motion picture? Did you have any input on the direction of the film? I was VERY excited when I found out Disney would be making a movie from my book. And I thought Garry Marshall did a great job—and that Anne Hathaway made the perfect Mia. At first I was a little iffy when I heard Julie Andrews would be playing Grandmere—Julie is too nice to play such a mean character! But when I saw Julie's performance, I knew she had just the right amount of regalness mixed with grandmotherly warmth. I am excited that most of the same cast will all be in the sequel this summer.

Such is the case for vocalist Alex Boyd who grew up on the Beatles and Metallica in Northern Virginia then discovered neo-soul at the hands of D'Angelo and Musiq Soulchild when he started attending Washington, DC's Duke Ellington School of the Arts. While at Ellington, he received a scholarship to Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan where he then went on to study opera. After getting kicked out of the boarding school (oops!), Boyd found himself on reality TV on NBC's Fame competition and settled in Los Angeles where he experimented with everything from electro-pop to jazz. With so many musical influences and tastes, Boyd thankfully decided to go in a more soulful direction when it came time to record his own music, which led him to be signed to Jive Records who will release his debut album, Commit Me, later this year. Comparisons to another blue-eyed soul crooner, Robin Thicke, will be immediate, if a little unfair. Alex's sound is all his own, which you can hear on his catchy first single "Light Up Tonight." The song starts off with a slow burn, then builds to a foot-tapping, finger-snapping chorus and a big finish. The track has a pop rock edge to it, but his voice brings the soul out. Expect to hear more from Alex Boyd as his new release Commit Me, makes its way up the charts.

Dear Daddy is a feature length documentary about the life-long effects of fatherlessness on women. Clarence Pointer Creates Art Masterpieces in Pencil “I get in a zone and my hand just starts moving,” he said. “I know in my mind what I want to capture, but I‟m not thinking grid lines or anything else. I just draw.”
Clarence was born in Hillsboro, a small town in Alabama. It was there he developed his God given talent with no formal training. With the support of family and friends, he continued to develop his own unique style of drawing and quickly became known as “The Pencilman”. He has always believed in creating realistic detailed masterpieces, which showcase his greatest skills and abilities. Clarence welcomes challenging and seemingly difficult projects, which keeps him sharp. Success came after a lot of practice, time, perseverance, selfdiscipline, patience and determination to be the best. While serving in the U. S. Air Force stationed at Okinawa, Japan, he was mentored by a master Japanese artist who told him to devote even more time to his craft. Those words of wisdom instill in Clarence a drive to improve his skills with each creation. In turn, he began winning numerous art contests throughout Southern California and has gained international recognition. With hundreds of drawing to his credit, there are no signs of the master pencil artist slowing down. People are sometimes blown away by the level of detail in each masterpiece.
