Modeled after Maria Shriver's Just Who Will You Be, Queen Latifah's goal with Put On Your Crown is to help young women build a strong sense of self-esteem. A US Dept. of Justice survey found that females ages 1624 are more vulnerable to partner violence than any other group, almost triple the national average. Cases like Chris Brown's assault on pop star Rihanna showed an ugly side of adolescent life. However, Queen Latifah has always been a shining example of a woman happy with herself and unwilling to compromise to fit into the "hollywood ideal" of what a confident beautiful woman should look like. The result: She's one of the biggest A-list celebrities in Hollywood. Get your copy at Amazon.com.

Pamela D. Rice Pamela is author of The Sunday Morning Wife. The old saying is true. You never know what's going on in someone else's home. From the outside looking in, Yolanda Clarke appears to have it all. She's a beautiful woman, and her husband, Timothy, is the pastor of BrightStar Tabernacle. They seem to have the perfect life. But, looks are certainly deceiving. Yolanda has become a puppet on a string, totally controlled by Timothy. While everyone at church thinks he walks on water, Yolanda knows the person behind the mask. His constant verbal tirades, physical and emotional abuse has become unbearable. In walks Andre Hunter. He's the type of man that can make any woman forget all her troubles. His chocolate skin, pearly whites, and beautiful smile enthrall Yolanda. She has never entertained the idea of infidelity, but the abuse and lack of intimacy at home makes her adulterous affair justifiable in her mind. Andre gives Yolanda everything she's missing at home- respect, conversation, and passion behind closed doors. But, Andre is hiding secrets of his own. Will Yolanda finally climb from the abyss of despair she's lived in with Timothy and move to a brighter tomorrow with Andre? Or will she forever remain "The Sunday Morning Wife?" Music Review George Huff

George Huff, the former American Idol contestant's first album since his 2005 debut Miracles, makes no bones about being a bright, cheerful, contemporary gospel album. There may be remnants of classic '70s soul - it's not by coincidence that there are heavy similarities to Al Green, particularly when he's punctuated by horns as he is on "Turn It Around" - but apart from the heavy synths on the Usher-styled "Free" and an unfortunate reliance on computer-corrected vocals, there's no attempt to sell Huff to a crossover contemporary soul audience, the way there was on Miracles. This is music as bright and cheerful as Huff himself, so it's not a surprise that he wrote the great majority of the album on his own; it's a reflection of his personality. As such, whether or not you like George Huff depends on how much you like George Huff, who remains very likeable despite his fondness for stiff, overheated spoken intros. This is not an album for new converts, it's for the converted, and it will satisfy them. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide.

A Tribute to

Lena Horne The multitalented entertainer's fierce individualism stood her in good stead during the trying times of the mid-20th century. By Alan Duke, CNN

Legendary singer, dancer, actress and civil rights activist Lena Horne, 92, died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said. No other details of her death were made public. Horne was the first African-Americans to sign a long-term movie contract with a major Hollywood studio when she joined MGM in 1942. Horne's expressive and silky voice made her a singing star, known best for her hit "Stormy Weather," after Hollywood failed to give her roles that might have made her a big screen starlet. Horne complained she was used as "window dressing" in white films, mostly limited to singing performances that could be easily edited out for play in southern theaters. The light-complexioned Horne refused to go along with studio plans to promote her as a Latin American. She later said she did not want to be "an imitation of a white woman." Horne, whose parents divorced when she was 3, lived a nomadic childhood traveling with her actress mother. She spent much of her time growing up in Brooklyn, New York, where she was born in 1917. Horne was 16 when she began her show business career as a dancer at Harlem's Cotton Club. She later became a singer there, playing to packed houses of white patrons, with band leaders Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. She began taking singing lessons in 1935, and eventually landed a part in the all-black Broadway production "Dance With Your Gods." Her work as a feature singer with touring bands and in nightclubs increased. She became the first African-American singer to tour with a white group in 1940, according to her official biography.

Lena Horne Tribute (continued) Her first film role came in 1938 in "The Duke is Tops," but her next movie didn't come along for another four years. She was given a screen test by MGM and signed to a seven-year movie contract after a studio scout saw her performing in a New York club. Her stepfather, Miguel Rodriguez, negotiated with MGM head Louis B. Mayer for her to never be cast as a maid or "Tarzan extra." "I think the black boy that cleaned the shoes and me were the only two black people except the maids who were there working for the stars," Horne said in a CNN interview. "And it was very lonely and I wasn't very happy." Still, Horne said she was grateful that her World War II era films -- including black musicals "Cabin in the Sky" and "Stormy Weather" -- were seen by black and white soldiers. "But after I realized I would only go so far, I went on the stage," Horne said. With only subservient roles available for a black actress in Hollywood in the 1940s, Horne turned to recording top-selling songs. Horne said performing for live audiences was what she loved most. "I'm always happy when I'm surrounded by people to react and feel and touch," she said. While traveling with a USO tour during the World War II, she walked out on a show because German war prisoners were seated in front seats, ahead of African-American troops. After the USO withdrew her from the tour, she used her own money to travel to sing for the troops. She has a son and daughter from a first marriage that ended in 1944. Horne married again in 1947 to Lennie Hayton, who was then MGM's music director. She kept the marriage secret for several years, since Hayton was white. When it was made public, the couple received hate mail and threats of violence, according to her biography. Radio, television, film and nightclub jobs were harder for Horne to find in the McCarthy era of the 1950s when she was blacklisted. That ended in 1956 when RCA gave Horne a new recording contract and she earned a guest spot in the movie "Meet Me in Las Vegas." Horne returned to Broadway in 1957 for her first starring role there. "Jamaica" ran for 555 shows.

Lena Horne Tribute (continued) She became active in the civil rights movement after she was involved in a public altercation following a racial slur in a Beverly Hills, California, restaurant in 1960. She was an active supporter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights movement. Horne was there when King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech on the Lincoln Memorial steps in 1963. Variety television shows welcomed Horne as a musical performer, especially in the 1960s. She appeared on numerous episodes with Perry Como, Dean Martin and Flip Wilson. She returned to film for a final role in 1978 as Glinda the Good Witch, opposite Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, in "The Wiz," an adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz." She got a special Tony Award for her 1981 one-woman Broadway hit "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music." She also won two Grammys for the recording of the show. Horne was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989, and she also won a Grammy in 1995 for best jazz vocal performance for her album "An Evening With Lena Horne." In her later years, Horne said she found peace. "The best time in my life I guess is now because I'm without flying off the handle -- sometimes I do,"

quiet and I'm logical and I accept Horne said with a laugh.

This week, R&B singers Kelly Rowland, Ciara, and Alicia Keys reminisced about the jazz great . “Lena's a powerful force of our history and legacy. She showed courage and tenacity during a tumultuous time reminding us all that our journey on earth is meant to make an impact,” Keys told VIBE in a statement. “Her journey surely did and she broke down many barriers in the process. Lena the woman, the human being that is the most fascinating to me: her vulnerabilities, her life, her flow through the many difficult times (and good ones) and her ability to remain graceful, elegant and beautiful always. What a special, phenomenal woman. I will miss her”, says Keys. When the news hit, many people took to Twitter to send condolences. Keys posted the following Twitter message on Monday in remembrance of Horne: "Wow! Lena Horne! What an incredible woman & story of triumph! May we all know that life is a journey of possibility as long as we hang on..." A Lena Horne biopic has reportedly been in the works for years, with Oprah Winfrey producing. Keys was rumored to star as the classic entertainer as a replacement for Janet Jackson. —Starrene Rhett

I Need Thee....Coming to The Wiltern Theatre Review Written by Dominique Lawson Becton, the play is a modern day version on the biblical book of Job. Masterfully played by Pastor Michael J. T. Fisher, main character Aaron loses his home, job, money, a child and eventually his wife in a series of tragic events. Throughout Aaron's ordeal he remains faithful to God. The entire play takes place in the living room of his mother Lynne's home where we are introduced to a cast of colorful yet relatable friends and family members. Aaron's wife Lisa sticks with him until she is reminded of her former Bougie lifestyle after a visit from her friends Alexis and Carmen. Aaron is protective of his sister Tiffany, and respectful of his peace-keeping mother who also has a strong faith in God. Conversely, Lynne's best friend and church buddy Greta is a loud mouth pseudo-spiritual Christian who brings her church shout home and emerges from her spiritual coma in time to curse folks out. Aaron's relentless faith led him to recover more than he lost. Because the story is familiar in a form that we are use to it would have been easy for writer Becton to rely on clichés, but she did not. I was thoroughly entertained and inspired. The stage play "I Need Thee" will soon be available on video. Coming Sunday, August 29th, to The Wiltern Theatre, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA (213) 388-1400. Tickets through LiveNation.

Canne Film Festival It's that time of year again: The annual Cannes film festival is poised to kick off more than a week of glamour, prestige, and of course, some of the best in international cinema. But before the jury selects the Palme d'Or -given to the director of the best feature film -there will be an opening night screening of Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood," which opens in the United States on May 14. "Robin Hood" may seem like too huge a venture for a festival that highlights more obscure foreign films, but that's actually part of its charm. Now in its 63rd year, the festival has become a kind of theatrical democracy, giving space to both Hollywood's blockbusters and art-house cinematic creations, said Variety film critic Justin Chang, who spoke with us en route to festival. "It's sort of a split-identity syndrome. It does attract the big Hollywood star wattage -- people like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Quentin Tarantino -- and yet at the same time, you have a showcase dedicated to the best and sometimes the most obscure of foreign art cinema," Chang said. "You have very crowd-pleasing stuff like 'Da Vinci Code,' 'Kung-Fu Panda' and 'Indiana Jones,' and then you have a nine-hour Portuguese documentary." Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and Woody Allen's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" will also have their moment in the festival spotlight. The eclectic cinematic menu is what makes Cannes special, Chang said. The 12-day event, running from May 12 to May 23, features a slew of screening categories, including the official competition, in which films compete for that impressive Golden Palm, the out of competition films, and the films of "un certain regard." Cannes in a nutshell, Chang said, "is the Grande Dame of film festivals, [and] a great breeding ground for talent."

THE 2010 NATIONAL FINALS From a competitive field of nearly 325,000 students nationwide, 16-year-old Amber Rose Johnson of Providence, Rhode Island, won the title of 2010 Poetry Out Loud National Champion at the National Finals held in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, April 27. With her achievement, Johnson also receives a $20,000 award and her high school, Classical High School, receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. One of Johnson’s earlier recitations was William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116, “Let me not to the marriage of true minds.” Actor and comedian John Leguizamo, who hosted the competition, asked Johnson why she selected the Shakespeare poem. “I chose 116 because I think the meaning of love gets distorted,” said Johnson. “It’s important to get back to the essence.” “That’s what I tell my wife all the time,” said Leguizamo. The second-place winner was Ruth Haile of Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who received a $10,000 award. The Maryland state champion, Nora Sandler, of Richard Montgomery High School in Bethesda, received the third-place prize and a $5,000 award. The other finalists were Youssef Biaz (AL); Annette Putnam (IL); Diego Javier Steele (MT); Emily Orellana (NV); Tia Robinson (VA); and Madeline Bunke (WI). Honorable mention awards went to Barbara Gooding (KY); Brianna Anderson (ND); and Shantelle Eddy (VI). For more information, visit www.poetryoutloud.org.

Daria Martin – Minotaur April 10 July 3, 2010

Hammer Museum 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90024 (310) 443-7000

London-based American artist Daria Martin's elusive and enigmatic films combine intense ritualistic performativity with rigorous yet detached photographic approach. Her 16mm film, Minotaur Pays tribute to the work of dance pioneer Anna Halprin, whose life and work has had a profound influence on Martin. This film is centered on a Halprin dance based on the sculpture Minotaur by Auguste Rodin from 1886 (also known as Faun and Nymph), a work possessing intensely erotic content (it depicts the part-man/partbull figure from Greek mythology with a naked young female in its grasp.) Martin's Minotaur extends her interweaving of highly conceptualized and choreographed physical movement; complexly layered stagecraft provoking unconventional formal relationships; direct allusions to modernist art history; and editing and cinematographic techniques evoking a broad range of the histories of both mainstream and experimental filmmaking.
