LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Jefferson Award honors those extraordinary people in our community who volunteer and tirelessly donate their time to help others. This month's winner is Rube Smith, a man who has stepped in to help when his neighbors need him. He is a father figure to many in his Carson community. "He sheds light on this community every day. He is our sunshine," said Randi Banks, who studies the Bible with Smith. Rube Smith has dedicated his life to the children -- all children. It all started in his Carson home. Rube holds Bible study at home every Wednesday, but the impact he has on this community goes far beyond his garage. "I came and it was like life-changing," said Banks. "He showed us how to open up and how to respect and love others even though stuff goes on around here, and you may not like stuff that happens to you, but he's like, 'Respect and love them.'" "This is not something that you pick up on the weekend. Since I live here, it is 24-7. They know they can call me anytime and I will be here," said Rube. READ MORE

FULL 405 FREEWAY CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR JULY 16-17, 2011 A full 53-hour closure of the 405 freeway, roughly between the 10 and the 101 freeways, is planned for the weekend of July 16-17, 2011. The closure is needed because of demolition work scheduled on the Mulholland Bridge. Demolition preparation work is scheduled to begin Friday night, July 15, 2011 at 10:00 p.m., and continue until Monday morning, July 18, 2011 at 5:00 a.m. The Mulholland Drive Bridge and both directions of the 405 freeway and on-ramps and off-ramps within the area of the closure will be closed to ensure public safety during the bridge dismantling. Janet Jackson Back by Popular Demand The Greek Theatre Thursday, Sept. 1st, 8:30pm Janet Jackson, whose three-concert stay in Los Angeles in April could not accommodate the ticket demand, will bring her JANET JACKSON Number Ones, Up Close and Personal Tour back to The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 1. The tour, in which the superstar performs a selection of songs from her impressive 35 number one hits, has recorded similar SRO engagements throughout Asia, Europe and North America, and now adds the rare circumstance of a return to a prior tour city. Her three spring performances at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City sold out in ten minutes. In addition to her rigorous tour schedule, Janet has headed record-setting fundraising events for HIV/AIDS research and treatment, including hosting recent balls in Cannes and Vienna, which topped all prior fundraising amounts of those events. Prior to her upcoming tour appearance at London's Royal Albert Hall and Paris' Olympia Music Hall, Janet will entertain in France for a giant fund-raiser June 15 when she becomes the first female artist ever to perform at the Louvre in the extraordinary IM Pei glass pyramid, raising funds for that most famous of museums. "I have been around the world on my Number Ones, Up Close and Personal tour and I am excited to be coming home to Los Angeles again. I can't wait to perform for my fans under the stars, at the beautiful Greek Theater. It's going to be a fun night. See you all there," said JANET.

'Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey' reveals a musical revolution Hip-hop now has a historical tome as bold and colorful as the larger-than-life people who built its history. Long before Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem or Lil Wayne ruled the billion-dollar-a-year industry, the path was paved by DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Grandwizard Theodore, LA Sunshine and Kurtis Blow. Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey is a luxury, large-format book from ARIA Multimedia that traces the genesis, evolution and global influence of hip-hop culture since its humble beginnings in the New York City streets. Given hip-hop's influential 37-year history, "it needed to be celebrated in a size and scope that would be as impactful as the culture itself," says editor in chief Jordan Sommers. The 420-page, 16-pound opus is stuffed with hundreds of rare photos and 70 essays that cover 30 aspects of the culture and profile 40 icons, from Blow to Nicki Minaj, who "changed the game." There are also more than 150 first-person accounts by participants in the movement. "It was very important to us that this story wasn't told by outsiders, but by the people themselves," Sommers says. "The writers that we hired were, if not right smack in the middle of things from day one, people who had 15 to 20 years as documenters of hip-hop culture.". If We Are Children of Royalty, Why Are We Loving Beneath Our Privilege? “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:1-10 Key Verse: 2:9 Royalty may refer to: Royal family (by extension the ruling house of any monarchy, regardless of the title), or one or more of its members. As images of the Royal wedding kept people up all night and captured the collective imagination of the world, I could not help but wonder aloud: If We, Christians, Are Children Of Royalty, Why Are We Loving Beneath Our Privileges? Why do so many of the children of the Most High God, who is Love, choose to walk the underprivileged path, not taking advantage of the vast number of opportunities to love extravagantly which arise daily, as sure as the sun and to be blessed in the process? Instead, many princes & princesses settle for loving beneath their privileges like the children of a lesser god? Have we forgotten that we are royalty, and not refugees, and as such we are expected to love lavishly? Or are we simply & willfully ignoring this inconvenient truth because ,truth be told, Real Love is more often not, just that: an inconvenience. Imagine what Christian relationships would look like if we learned to love like we were worth the price God paid through Christ for us! Selah… The greatest gift to any man is a virtuous woman. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night: Ruth 3:11 And now, my daughter, fear not. I will do for you all you require, for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of strength (worth, bravery, capability) This is Real Talk, Sankofa! Matthew 13:44-46 Selah...

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadsters Come to America Mercedes-Benz has pulled the covers off its redesigned 2012 SLK-Class, providing an early glimpse at the roadster's new styling — including an exotic panoramic "vario" roof that changes transparency — and new direct-injection engines. The 2012 SLK goes on sale this summer in the U.S. The two-seater gets a new face that not only recalls classic Mercedes-Benz roadsters from the '50s, but also conjures a family resemblance with the current rangetopping SLS AMG. While the new design is more aerodynamically efficient, it is the choice of roof treatments on the thirdgeneration SLK that may intrigue potential buyers the most. The SLK's cockpit has been revamped with a choice of standard brushedaluminum trim or optional dark brown walnut. Other features include a color display for infotainment functions and a flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel. An intriguing option is "sun-reflecting" leather upholstery, which Mercedes says "noticeably reduces seat temperature" in the summer. Initially, the car will be available in only one version, the SLK350, powered by a redesigned 3.5-liter V6 that makes 302 horsepower, accelerates from zero to 60 in 5.4 seconds and returns an average 23 mpg. Later in the model year, Mercedes will introduce a new SLK250, fitted with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 201 hp and coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. Zero-to-60 acceleration takes 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph and average fuel economy of 27 mpg. The 2012 SLK comes with a new driver drowsiness-detection system called Attention Assist. Buyers can also order a Lighting package with cornering and adaptive lamps, as well as Distronic Plus with Pre-Safe Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in an impending rear-end collision. The Short Sale: Get A Preliminary Title! I spoke with a friend that lives in another state and we were catching up on our lives. She told me that she was in the process of purchasing a short sale and told me that it had been a very stressful process. I, myself, love to handle short sales as I love a challenge, so I pretty much have seen just about every different scenario out there when it comes to them. One thing that I ask for up front when I am the listing agent is a statement of information from my sellers and I also get a copy of a preliminary title report so that I can see what liens are showing up so there are no surprises in the end. I try to eliminate as many surprises that I can and really try to be proactive. Short sales can be tough to process, but with a bit of determination, they can get done. What messed up my friend's short sale process was the fact that a child support judgment came up after the bank had approved her offer. The listing agent had no clue, and the problem here is the fact that the bank had issued an approval which was good for only 30 days. Sometimes getting a child support judgment to get paid and show it is paid can take a while when you are dealing with the district attorney's office. So, not only do short sales take time to process (they are not short time wise by any means) they can be stressful. Not all of them are, some are easy to take care of, but the majority of them are hard. They are stressful not only for the buyer's but also for the sellers. So, one thing that you can take from this if you are buying a short sale is this-make sure your agent gets a preliminary title report and that the listing agent has had the sellers fill out a statement of information and escrow has had title run their names to see if any liens are against them. And, buyers you will need a statement of information filled out for you as well to make sure no child support liens or anything else comes up against your name as well.If I can be of any help to you, feel free to contact me at 951-204-1864 or visit my website at http://inlandempirerealestate.kwrealty.com Joan Patterson, B.A., A.S.P., G.R.I., Realtor, License #01431647, Keller Williams Realty, 8250 White Oak Ave., Suite 102, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730, (951) 204-1864.
