October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

The City of Carson celebrated 45 years as a city by hosting an Anniversary Parade. What Are Some Special Things About the City of Carson? One of the city's first accomplishments was the construction of the Carson Mall (now renamed the South Bay Pavilion at Carson) in 1972. Other notable high points include the growth of Cal -State University Dominguez Hills (and the building of Olympic Velodrome which brought the 1984 games to Carson), the opening of the Carson Civic Center (including the Carson City Hall, a post office, sheriff station, a large Carson Community Center, and a nearby Hilton hotel), the Carson Regional Library, and the creation of a series of fine neighborhood parks. The newest addition, the Home Depot National Training Center, opened in 2003. But the city has had to fight long and hard to surmount those initial hardships, which still act as a hurdle to the city's progress. For instance, many of the prime building sites in Carson have a previous history as landfills or former refineries. This means any new construction on such contaminated industrial sites require lengthy procedures to deal with environmental concerns.

But the City has been successful in making the most of such problem areas, reclaiming many areas formerly considered unusable. The new Carson Town Center, for instance (which opened in 1996), was built on land formerly used by the Golden Eagle refinery, while the proposed new L.A. MetroMall will be built upon a former landfill next to the 405 freeway. Learn more about history.asp

Panera Bread bakery-cafes across Southern California are paying homage to fall by debuting a range of autumn-inspired flavors and seasonal favorites in new and returning menu items. Joining the mix are the new Roasted Turkey Harvest Wheatberry Salad, the new Vegetarian Autumn Squash Soup, and returning favorites, the Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pumpkin Pie Bagel. The new Roasted Turkey Harvest Wheatberry Salad features all-natural, antibiotic-free roasted turkey tossed with field greens, romaine, Gorgonzola and a blend of wheatberries, roasted Fuji apples, golden raisins, pistachios, dried apricots, dried cranberries, ginger and infused lemon zest. These flavors are topped off with a seasonally-inspired maple balsamic vinaigrette with a sweet-tangy flavor complimentary to every ingredient in the salad. Also joining the fall menu are the all new Vegetarian Autumn Squash Soup, the Rigatoni San Marzano Pasta, and the Roasted Tomato & Feta Baked Egg Soufflé. Offered daily until November 12, the Autumn Squash Soup is a rich blend of butternut squash and pumpkin simmered in vegetable broth with honey, apple juice, cinnamon and a hint of curry, finished with sweet cream and topped with roasted and salted pumpkin seeds. The Rigatoni San Marzano Pasta is the latest addition to Panera Bread’s Premium Signature Pastas and features rigatoni pasta with spicy sausage, peas and San Marzano tomatoes. The Rigatoni will be offered as a small or large serving size and will include the choice of half cafe salad or cup of cafe soup. For those with a sweet tooth, the new Chocolate Truffle Babka and new cupcake flavors (chocolate, vanilla, red velvet) will be joining returning seasonal favorites back by popular demand: the Cranberry Orange Muffin, Jack-O-Lantern / Pumpkin Cookie, Pumpkin Muffie and Pumpkin Spice Latte.
