News From the Community!

CHS Alumni Al Washington speaks at celebration

CHS Alumni and friends came together to celebrate the life of deceased coach Gene Vollnogle. Vollnogle’s teams won 10 City Section championships in his 34 seasons of coaching. He won two City titles as a co-coach at Wilmington Banning from 1957-62 and eight at Carson from 1963-90, when he became the school’s first football coach. His overall record was 289-73-1. He was an incredible football mind,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. “He’d watch a film and get more out of it than 10 guys in the room. He’s truly a high school football coaching legend.” Vollnogle passed away last month. He was 81.

What Obama and Romney Say About the Missing Campaign Issue of Civil Rights

•Supports extending the Employment NonDiscrimination Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity. •Signed the Claims Resolution Act of 2010 providing funding and statutory authorities for the settlement agreements reached in the Cobell lawsuit, brought by Native Americans; the Pigford II lawsuit, brought by African American farmers; and four separate water rights suits, brought by Native American tribes.

Five Reasons We Can't Trust Romney With Our National Security

Romney on Civil Rights: •As Governor of Massachusetts, Romney chose a woman Lt. Governor, a woman chief of staff, and half of his cabinet and senior officials were women. •In business he publicly stated that he mentored and supported women who went on to run major companies.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson President Obama and GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney have spent countless hours slamming each other over the economy, the deficit, joblessness, health care reform, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and Energy policy. They have made references to gun control, immigration, education, regulatory reform, and foreign policy issues on the campaign trail. They have even revived and wrapped their conventions around the standard wedge issues of gay marriage, abortion, religion and traditional family values. Yet there's been absolutely no talk about civil rights during their war for the White House. That's civil rights that is that specifically focuses on racial and gender employment discrimination, hate crimes, and equal opportunity for minorities. Talk about civil rights is not missing from their verbal broadsides against each other because they haven't written about, spoken about, and took action on this aspect of civil rights. Here's a point by point comparison of what Obama has said and done about civil rights during his White House tenure and what Romney has said and done during his tenure as Massachusetts governor and during his years as a founder and director of Bain.

President Obama on Civil Rights: •Signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act which empowers women to recover wages lost to discrimination by extending the time period in which an employee can file a claim. Obama supports the Paycheck Fairness Act that will add tougher legal weapons to fight pay discrimination. Obama convened a National Equal Pay Task Force to ensure that existing equal pay laws are fully enforced. •Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which extends the coverage of Federal hate crimes law to include attacks based on the victim's actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. •Requested two years of double-digit budget increases in the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. The Justice Department has reached three multi-million dollar settlements, including the largest rental discrimination and fair lending settlements in its history.

Robert Creamer The events of the last 48 hours have made it indisputably clear: America cannot trust Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan with our national security.

•Supports the enactment by the states of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act that bans gays from being fired. But does not support it at the federal level.

This morning's Huffington Post headline summarized what it called, "The Verdict: Most Craven and Ill-Advised Move...Not Worthy of A President... Bungle... Utter Disaster... Not Presidential... Lehman Moment... Over the Top... Desperate... Awesomely Awful."

•Publicly proclaimed that Arab Americans should not be subjected to harassment for their religious beliefs. "This is a nation that recognizes the equality of all individuals."

Notwithstanding the horrible reviews, Romney and his campaign tripled down on their criticism of President Obama and the American diplomats who were on the ground and about to come under attack.

•Declared that women in organizations have not had the opportunity that they deserve to get ahead in organizations. "If we are to compete as a nation, we've got to draw on the skills of women and minorities. And I have seen organizations from the federal government to corporations that are not drawing on the skills of women and minorities."

Romney's neocon foreign policy adviser, Richard Williamson, told the Washington Post that, "There is a pretty compelling story that if you had a President Romney, you'd be in a different situation." He's right about that. We'd be in a very different -- and dangerous -- situation if Mitt Romney were in charge of American national security. There are at least five reasons why every American should be frightened at the prospect of Mitt Romney as Commander-in-Chief.

•Supports the requirement that public companies and federal agencies be required in their annual report to report the number of women & minorities by income category, to help identify where the glass ceiling is, and enact measures to break through it. The marketplace will say "that company has not promoted women and minorities and will put pressure on American corporations and agencies to respond." The virtual silence of President Obama and Romney during the 2012 presidential campaigns on civil rights is not surprising not only because Obama and Romney see the economy and health care reform as their path to or back to the White House but because of the glaring recent history of presidential candidates ignoring racial matters. In fact civil rights as a campaign issue has seeped into presidential debates only when they ignite public anger and division; such as for a time the red hot debate that raged over affirmative action. No president or presidential challenger in the past two decades, especially a Democratic challenger, has risked being tarred as pandering to minorities for the mere mention of civil rights or racial problems. But civil rights whether mentioned or not on the 2012 presidential campaign trail, still strikes to the heart of the chronic colossal problems of health, education, employment and income disparities that plague minorities and in turn the nation. These are problems that all presidents sooner or later will have to grapple with. It will be the same for Obama or Romney during their next four years in the White House. 1). Mitt Romney has no guiding principles when it comes to foreign policy -- or anything else for that matter -- but one: his own personal ambition. Tuesday night Romney demonstrated once again that he would take any cheap shot that he thought would serve his ambition to be president, regardless of its impact on American national security or our people on the ground. Of course this is nothing new. Romney has demonstrated time and time again that he has no lasting commitment to principle whatsoever. He has gone from being pro-choice to ardently anti-abortion; morphed from a Massachusetts moderate to a "severe conservative"; demonstrated his willingness to buy companies, load them with debt, bleed them dry and destroy the lives of workers and communities all to make money for himself and his investors. After favoring immigration reform in the past, Romney became the most anti-immigrant major presidential candidate in modern history. Romney drafted and passed RomneyCare and then promised to repeal a similar bill when one was passed by President Obama and a Democratic Congress. Why? Because that's what the thought was necessary to get the Republican nomination for president. Romney has no North Star guiding his behavior except his desire to enhance his own personal wealth and his own driving ambition. Someone like that is the last guy you want to trust to make the tough decisions to protect American national security. Great statesmen are people who think more about the next generation than the next election. They are people who are willing to take the political heat because they are committed to doing what is right to protect the American people. They are heroes of John Kennedy's Profiles in Courage, not the men described in John Dean's book on the Nixon White House, Blind Ambition. 2). Mitt Romney has no vision. In his acceptance speech to the Republican Convention he made fun of President Obama's concern for global climate change and his commitment toward the elimination of nuclear weapons. Romney actually opposed passage of the START II Treaty with Russia that reduced nuclear weapons to their current levels. Steven Bradford for 62nd Assembly District Assemblyman Steven Bradford, DInglewood, should be sent back to Sacramento for another term to represent this district, which runs from Marina del Rey to Hawthorne. Among his accomplishments, Bradford authored a successful measure that strengthens reporting requirements for child abuse, another bill that requires real estate agents to notify customers of potential safety hazards near their homes and another measure that saves education funds by allowing school districts to distribute parent handbooks electronically. Bradford faces light competition from fellow Democrat and perennial candidate Mervin Evans, who has also unsuccessfully mounted bids for mayor of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Council, the state Senate, the Assembly and Congress

What to Look for When Renting Office Space Choosing a space for your business is a huge decision, especially for start-ups. There's much to consider, from hiring a real-estate broker to finding the right location to fine-tooth-combing through the lease. Bill Armstrong, treasurer of the National Association of Realtors, who has toiled for 30 years in just about every aspect of commercial real estate, advises finding a broker who is experienced in commercial real estate and familiar with the pertinent geography. "You have to interview, if you will, a broker, and have a sense of comfort with his competency," Armstrong says. "I think you can meet with them and find out what they know in really short order." OK, time to find your office. First determine how much space is necessary for you to operate. Armstrong cautions: Be realistic. If you lease more space than your business requires, your monthly rent could consume an excessive chunk of your precious resources. If you're a start-up, you'll want to account for future growth. But how much? Be thrifty. "Don't take on more space than you need," Armstrong says. "That's critical. "Once you've determined the square footage your business requires and homed in on a space to match, figure out whether the existing layout suits your needs. If it doesn't, you may want to embark on what's known as tenant improvement, or TI. If your desired space requires extensive renovations, find out whether the landlord will contribute to those costs. "This is another big thing," Armstrong says. "The entrepreneur needs to say, 'What kind of help can I expect with respect to TI?'" Armstrong says landlords generally are more willing to share TI costs when a tenant has agreed to a long-term lease. If you've signed on for only a year or two, you may be on your own. About that lease--it's a mighty important document. Be sure you know the meaning of every syllable. Armstrong says it's imperative that the lease protects your interests. Consider hiring a real-estate lawyer to review it. As you peruse the lease, Armstrong says, watch for costs beyond your per-square-foot rental price, such as utilities and common area maintenance (CAM) fees, which cover the expense to maintain the building--cleaning hallways and restrooms, removing snow, keeping up the landscaping. If you're not sure whether the rental price covers CAM or utility costs, by all means, ask. After all, the terms of your lease are just as important as your rent. "I may need, in a year or two years, to double my space," Armstrong says. "I might want a oneyear lease with a three-year option or a five-year option. If I need to grow, I need the ability to come out of there without a long-term commitment." - Christopher Hann

El Camino College Celebrates 65 Years of Serving the South Bay; Alumni Success: 2000s For the past 65 years, El Camino College has helped thousands of students transfer to the university of their dreams, while also providing training programs for high-paying jobs. Through the years, outstanding faculty and staff have supported ECC students in achieving their goals, and alumni continue to be successful in their careers and community endeavors. By the start of the 21st century, it was clear that while the college had served the South Bay well through its first five decades, campus facilities needed extensive safety and technology upgrades. In 2002, the El Camino Community College District sought and obtained voter approval for a $394 million facilities bond. At the time, it was the largest successful bond for a single-campus community college district. In addition, it was the first-ever bond in the college’s history. In the past 10 years, Measure E funding has supported classroom upgrades, instructional equipment modernization, and necessary health and safety repairs in many of the buildings – some nearly 65 years old. Community support of Measure E echoed the positive sentiment of the original vote to create the college in 1947, as the bond passed with a 61 percent vote. Soon after, a nine-person Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee was formed to oversee the expenditures of the bond. Bond funds supported the new Humanities Building, the first new academic building on campus in four decades, which opened in early 2008 and serves as part of a revitalized entrance to the campus. Other completed projects include the Science Complex, Bookstore and Social Science Building renovations; electrical/fire alarm upgrades; as well as a brand new Central Plant, Learning Resources Center and parking structure. The Antaeus Theater Company Presents ‘You Can’t Take it With You’ Kaufman & Hart's YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU Written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart Directed by Gigi Bermingham Runs Thursday through Saturday, 8 pm Saturday & Sunday, 2 pm Through December 9th, 2012

The Sycamore household is part carnival, part asylum. Penny is an aspiring Picasso, and also fancies herself a successful dramatist (with a bulging stack of unfinished plays to prove it). Her hubby Paul specializes in explosives and chance ignitions, while daughter Essie consistently flutters about like a prima ballerina. Grandpa (Joseph Ruskin, in a wonderful performance), enjoys the life of a retiree, but has some ugly tax problems, and daughter Alice, who is in love with her boss' son and wants to marry him, must try to bring her beau's snobby parents into the Sycamore fold. The operative word here is fun; there always seems to be some monkeyshines going on and there are a few pleasant surprises that pop up. Director Gigi Bermingham has done an excellent job of balancing the play's comedic elements and pacing the three acts, and Tom Buderwitz's set design is marvelous. Note that as with all Antaeus productions, the play is double-cast. Antaeus Company, 5112 Lankershim Blvd., N. Hlywd.; Thurs.-Fri., 8 p.m.; Sat., 2 & 8 p.m.; Sun., 2 p.m.; through Dec. 9. “No one can make you angry, happy, or sad. You always have a choice in how you react to others. You choose what emotion to project on their actions or inaction. You choose from your internal file of experiences on how to react. You can stop and think about a new reaction anytime you want. You can remember that everyone is doing exactly what you are doing, acting and reacting based on the past experiences. Live your life forward. Be conscious of your thoughts, actions, and reactions and you will become immune to the choices of others, or you will be able to find a perspective that prevents you from automatically choosing your default emotions. “ - Melanie Clarke The Amazing Clarks are Certified Life & Love Coaches Anthony Clark and Melanie Clark. Watch Your Mouth! by Creflo Dollar People often ask me how they can experience breakthrough in their lives. Everyone wants to know how to get out of bad situations and into good ones. They want to know the five steps to a miracle or the seven keys to success, but the truth is there is no quick fix for life's problems. It's the choices we make from day to day that determine where we are today. One of the choices that people often overlook that is mainly responsible for most of life's struggles is their choice of words. I've come to realize that nothing is more important than the words we speak. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. This law governs all of life, and it works the same for everyone, whether you are saved or not. What's so dangerous is that many people, through ignorance or neglect, destroy their own lives with their words. People are destroyed because of what they don't know. It is ignorance and a lack of understanding about the power of words that keeps people in defeat. For example, a man who's been unemployed and desperately needs a job but seems to have no success in getting one has most likely been defeated by his words. He has spent a considerable amount of time talking about how hard it is to find a job and the tough job market, then complains and wonders why his situation isn't changing. His own words have solidified and supported the present circumstance of joblessness. This kind of situation usually goes from bad to worse unless there is a change made in the words spoken concerning the problem. One of the biggest reasons why people don't take words seriously is because we don't always see the consequences of what we say immediately. We must understand that words can be compared to seeds planted in the ground. They may not come to life overnight, but they will grow. Jesus said that every idle and unproductive word we speak will be judged and have consequences (Matthew 12:36). Idle words are words spoken and not believed. We often say things we don't mean. For instance, I hear people say, "I almost died laughing." Did they really almost die? Of course not, but they said so. You may be saying, "But, Brother Dollar, it's just an expression!" But I'm here to tell you that Heaven is recording every word you and I speak. There is a reason why Jesus could speak to a fig tree and see the results of what He said twenty-four hours later. There is also a reason why God could speak the worlds into creation and see immediate results—He believed what He said. Sadly, most people believe the negative things they say about themselves more than they do their positive faith confessions, so the positive words they speak have no effect. In my research of the Bible, I have found that the Hebrew word "dabar," when translated, means both words and things. The Bible says God saw everything that He made (Genesis 1:31). Well, how did He make those things? He spoke them into existence. The entire first chapter of Genesis is a record of God speaking things that appeared in the natural world as a result of what He said. Words are things. It's important to understand that when you speak words, you are also speaking things. If you want to see new things in your life, make a decision to speak those things God has said in His Word. Change your self-image and your life by believing the good things God has said about you. Don't deceive your heart— say what you truly believe. Once you take your words seriously, positive confessions will become your way of life, and you'll have the power to change your circumstances for the better.

Appreciation Celebration for Apostle Ronald & Lady Osie Hill of Love and Unity Christian Fellowship LOVE AND UNITY!!!!! Let's get ready to celebrate our founders for 31 years in Ministry. Join us as we welcome Pastor Xavier Thompson and Southern Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Walter Rogers and Pastor Barry E. Knight. Service begins Wednesday @ 7pm. NOTE SERVICE begins at 7:00PM, not the usual 7:30pm. WE LOVE, LOVE AND UNITY, HOW ABOUT YOU??????????

About Apostle Ronald Hill The youngest of four children, Pastor Ronald C. Hill was raised in the small town of Pittsburg, Texas. When he was 8 years old he accepted Jesus Christ into his life, but experienced little spiritual growth. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Navy and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1967, he was honorably discharged and moved to Los Angeles, California where he worked in the Aircraft Industry. The following year, he accepted a job with the Southern California Transit District. In 1972, Pastor Hill rededicated his life to God. Shortly thereafter, the Lord instructed him to quit his job and go into ministry full time. A year later, the Lord opened a door for Pastor Hill to become the first African-American minister to serve as chaplain with the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles. From 1973 to 1980, Pastor Hill also served as an Evangelist and Chaplain with the Los Angeles County Probation Department. In November of 1981, the Lord led Pastor Hill to found the Love and Unity Christian Fellowship. Beginning this ministry with only his helpmeet Osie, their small children and five church members, this fellowship of believers has impacted their community for Christ growing into a membership of over 3,500 members. Although located in an urban community widely known for its drugs, gang violence, and poverty the city of Compton, CA is where the Love & Unity Christian Fellowship calls home. Opening the doors to a multi-million dollar building project in 2005, the Born Again Center became the new home of the Love & Unity Christian Fellowship. Through hard work and being faithful to God’s calling upon his life, Pastor Hill has the led the Love & Unity congregation into the importance of evangelism outside the four walls of the church. The Love & Unity Christian Fellowship has knocked on the door of every home in the city of Compton at least three times hoping to reach the community for Christ. Known as a man of much prayer and fasting, Pastor Hill leads the Love & Unity Christian Fellowship in hosting a monthly prayer and consecration events. In addition, the church doors are open for prayer Monday thru Friday during the hours of: 5:00am, 6:00am, 12:00 Noon, 6:00pm and Saturday’s 6:00am- 6:00pm. Pastor Ronald C. Hill has been married to Evangelist, Missionary Osie L. Hill for 39 years. God has blessed them with four children: Angela, Constance, Ronald Jr., and Joseph. They have also been blessed with one daughter-in-law, Roneisha and one son-in-law, Min. Daryl Laws and 3 grandchildren, Jahkari David, Tori Celeste and Amanda Celeste. Pastor Hill was also blessed in the early portion of his life with a daughter Sharlet Reed, a son-in-law Leonard and two grandchildren Lakendra and Alison, whom reside in his home state of Texas. Remembering the 1912 Presidential Election As Barack Obama and Mitt Romney make last-minute efforts to sway voters before Tuesday’s election, it’s tempting to think that year-round campaigning, hard-fought primaries, personal attacks, fiery speeches and media brouhahas are only endemic to modern presidential politics. But 100 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson proved otherwise in the only U.S. election to ever pit a former president, a current president and a future president against each other. At first, Theodore Roosevelt, who was commander-in-chief from 1901 to 1909, seemed an unlikely candidate for the 1912 presidential election. After backing his close friend William Howard Taft to serve as his successor, he disappeared on an extended hunting trip to Africa. But Roosevelt became increasingly disillusioned with Taft and eventually decided to mount a challenge for the next Republican nomination. “My hat is in the ring,” Roosevelt declared in February 1912. “The fight is on and I am stripped to the buff.” With few exceptions, candidates in prior elections had largely refrained from overt campaigning. Roosevelt changed this by giving speeches around the country, especially in the dozen states with direct primaries. He called Taft a “fathead” with “the brains of a guinea pig,” and Taft responded in kind, saying Roosevelt’s followers were “radicals” and “neurotics.” “Roosevelt felt it was hard to sit on the sidelines when this guy was messing up,” said Alan Lessoff, a history professor at Illinois State University who specializes in the Progressive Era. “And Taft was no slouch, so he resented it terribly.” Though Roosevelt won most of the primaries, he came up short of delegates at the tumultuous Republican National Convention in Chicago, prompting him and his supporters to storm out. They then reconvened across town and formed the Progressive Party, nicknamed the Bull Moose Party because Roosevelt said he felt as fit as a bull moose. Meanwhile, at the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore, New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson managed to outlast Speaker of the House Champ Clark, winning the nomination on the 46th ballot. “He was a fresh face, an articulate guy, mildly progressive, southern roots, northern background,” Lewis L. Gould, author of “Four Hats in the Ring: The 1912 Election and the Birth of Modern American Politics,” said of Wilson. Rounding out the field was Eugene Debs, who was running for the third straight time on the Socialist Party ticket. In the run-up to the November election, Taft essentially gave up as a candidate, complaining in a letter that “there are so many people in the country who don’t like me.” To make matters worse, Vice President James S. Sherman died in office that October, temporarily leaving him without a running mate. All three other candidates hit the stump aggressively, particularly Roosevelt, who traveled some 10,000 miles and visited 34 states, where he spoke out in favor of Progressive Era causes such as minimum wage laws, conservation, women’s suffrage, safer workplaces, the eighthour workday and regulating but not destroying monopolies. At one point, he was shot before an appearance in Milwaukee, yet he still managed to speak for about 90 minutes with a bullet lodged in his chest. In the end, Roosevelt ran one of the most successful third-party candidacies in history. But with the Republican Party split, Wilson—who had based his campaign on completely smashing monopolies and tariff reduction—became the first Democrat since Grover Cleveland to take the White House. He prevailed with 42 percent of the popular vote (435 electoral votes), compared to 27 percent (88 electoral votes) for Roosevelt and 23 percent (eight electoral votes) for Taft. Debs didn’t get any electoral votes, but he garnered 6 percent of the popular vote—the most ever for a Socialist presidential candidate. “I think it’s the most distinguished field that has ever run for president in modern times,” said Gould, who added that the consequences of the election were profound. The Republican Party, for instance, would never be the same. “Ever since the 1912 campaign, the conservatives in the Republican Party have had the upper hand,” Lessoff said. “But what it means to be a conservative has changed quite a bit. You can’t draw a straight line.”

Black Men vs. White Men: The Black Woman’s Choice By Cicely j. and Marlon Green Available at Amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/Black-Men-White-Womans-Choice/dp/0615320937 Decades ago, when relationships developed between men and women, most often their associations were based upon mutual admiration, respect, similar interests and racial connection. As time passed and the elements of love, devotion, honor, trust and support became an integral part of those relationships, men and women proudly and sacredly vowed to lifetime commitments, and began building strong, loving family units that evolved from one generation to the next. Yet today, as persistent societal changes threaten, challenge and test family values, more men and women are finding that the cohesive foundations that held their family trees together, years ago, are now lying in shambles like fallen houses of cards. Sadly enough, for many men and women, family values have become insignificant, meaningless and to some, even a joke. As cheating, indiscriminate sex and one-night stands become the ‘games’ on any given day, and men and women fall in and out of love like adolescents going through stages of puppy love, it’s no wonder relationships are receiving such a blistering black eye. And then, of course, by the time you throw in such elements as couples’ low and degrading public displays, demeaning and dirt-slinging criticisms, or the all too common neglect and disregard of innocent children derived from tarnished and broken relationships, you have an up close and personal look at just a small sector of the underlying causes for the negative ways many men and women view and treat one another. And, to their detriment, it is not a pretty picture. To understand many of the various reasons why so many ‘black” men and women tend to be at tremendous odds with one another in their relationships, one merely needs to read “black men vs. White Men… the Black Woman’s Choice,” by authors Cicely J and Marlon Green. It is a viewpoint from both sides of the coin that needs to be examined. “black men vs. White Men… the Black Woman’s Choice,” a no-holds barred reading, is certain to create a firestorm of controversy for its critical and razor-sharp assessment of the unraveling of Black America. This book is a “must-read” that will, undoubtedly, anger those who just might happen to see their own reflections in the authors’ mirror that also exposes the issues that continue to broaden the gap between black men and women.

From Dud to Stud: Revving Up for Success By Claudia Cookey Available through the author - http://claudiacooley.com/from-dud-to-stud Throughout the years that I’ve coached hundreds of men and women the strategies, tools and insights for living successful and enriched lives, I have often been asked “why don’t you write a book for men that speaks to their specific needs to empower their unique and individual style?” Those request had me take pause, and consider why I would write a book for men. This is when I realized the importance of the idea. You see for over 3 decades in addition to women, from the earliest of my years of teaching, I’ve guided men in ways to enrich their life and excel their success. So I said “yes” to writing a dynamic book for men that shares the wisdom and what I know works to make a difference to excel and empower all areas of their life.
