What’s Happening Around Town Albertsons Hosts In Your Community Appreciation Events To show appreciation for the South Bay residents, Albertsons is hosting events in the parking lots of local stores. Saturday, Albertsons on Sepulveda in Carson provided new product samples, coupons on upcoming deals. They also hosted a clown face painter for the kids, music, dancers and games.

Long Beach Community Food Drive Kicks Off Mayor Bob Foster of Long Beach, CA, Food Finders, Friends of Long Beach Animals and We Love Long Beach are partnering together in this year’s Long Beach Community Food Drive with a goal to collect 100,000 pounds of food. Barrels will be placed in several locations throughout the city to collect canned or packaged food as well as pet food to help out needy families and pets in Long Beach.

Donations will be accepted starting today until Jan. 31, 2011.

“Long Beach residents and businesses have always responded generously to our request for donations,” said Mayor Foster. “This year’s food drive goal is to collect 100,000 pounds of food, which would provide three meals a day to approximately 2,547 families for a week.” How to help?

Three Way Eight Ball Avoidance By: Peter Mehit, Custom Business Planning and Solutions

At one point in my career, I managed a lot of software projects. At least once on each project, I would be handed the classic dilemma: “You can have it on budget or on time, but you can‟t have both.”

The person that was saying this to me was expressing frustration about being behind an eight ball, sometimes because of my planning, sometimes theirs and sometimes it was the accumulation of all the times we didn‟t say „no‟ to the client.

During this period, I learned about a concept called the „triple constraint‟. The „triple constraint‟ consists of Scope, Time and Resources. Explained below, it is a quick way to think about any situation and be able to know how difficult it will be.

One way to think about it is as three forces that are all pushing against each other such that, any change in one will affect at least one of the other two.

The first force is scope. Well defined scope is at the heart of any contract, business plan or project. Simply put, scope how much work will be done and what the delivered product will look like. For a project, it is the set of tasks that will be met and the objective of the project. For a company these are the process steps that are used to deliver its product to a customer. How big the scope is drives two other forces: time and resources.

Time is literally how much time you want a task or process to take. In selling a car, two hours may be an acceptable time. Writing a contract may take 10 hours.

Machining steel into a part may take a few minutes. Time affects scope because the time limit will determine how much scope you can accomplish. If you choose well in developing your scope, you should be able to accomplish the work in the time you set. Scope and time, in turn, are dependent on resources.

Resources are the things that you need to get the job done. Most think this applies to people alone, but it also can be a line of credit, a machine or anything else that gets your process steps completed so you can deliver your product. A well planned business or project will allow the work described by scope to be performed in the time allowed with the resources you select.

All these forces act on each other. A change in one means a change in the others.

It‟s simple and powerful. Understanding that changing any of the three elements will have an impact on at least one of the others, you can make quick assessments of business situations and rapidly come up with usable choices. Education Cal State Long Beach Graduate Student Among Winners of Minerva Scholarships Presented at Women’s Conference Patrice Collins, a graduate student at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), was named one of 20 recipients of the 2010 Minerva Scholarships to assist outstanding California women in their pursuit of higher education.

The $5,000 awards were announced by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver and were presented to recipients last week at the 2010 Women‟s Conference in Long Beach, the nation‟s premier forum for women.

Collins, who was nominated for the award by the California State NAACP, is a second-year graduate student pursuing a master‟s degree in early childhood education. She expects to complete her master‟s studies next summer, but she won‟t be finished with her education just yet.

“Receiving this scholarship places me one step closer to fulfilling my goal of pursuing a doctoral degree,” Collins explained. “It will relieve the stress of worrying about financial resources to conduct program research, application costs, and costs for professional conferences.”

Carson, Narbonne Earn top-4 seeds for L.A. City Section Girls Volleyball Playoffs Carson and Narbonne are poised for big postseason runs in the L.A. City Section girls volleyball playoffs.

Carson secured the No. 2 seed and Narbonne was seeded No. 4 in the Division I playoffs that were announced Tuesday.

Carson and Narbonne finished 1-2 in the Marine League this season for the first time since 2004.

Carson is trying to earn its first upper-division City girls volleyball title since 1988 when the mothers of current players Jade Tigilau and Doreen Iosua led the Colts to the title.

Carson also won the 3 A title in 2000.

"The girls are excited, but they're trying to stay humble," Carson coach Daniella Kline said. "We're not letting it get to our heads. We're not overlooking anyone." READ MORE

L.A. Marathon will return to Santa Monica for March 2011 It looks like the L.A. Marathon's "Stadium to the Sea" route is here to stay.

The only details in doubt are some of the finer points of the massive race's finish line and end-of-route festival.

Santa Monica city and marathon officials said this week that the finish line may be pushed further north from last year's Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard location to allow the throngs of runners extra room to cool down following the grueling contest. Also, it looks as if the festival will be moved to a vacant lot adjacent to the Civic Center instead of the 1550 Lot just north of the Santa Monica Pier, Assistant City Manager Elaine Polachek said.

"It just got really bunched-up [at the finish]," Polachek said. "With the volunteers, runners and spectators it was just too crowded near the finish."

The decision to move the festival had a few logistical issues behind it. For one, the location of last year's festival, where runners were reunited with family, friends and belongings, forced participants to walk down the pier's ramp, which was uncomfortable for many finishers, Polachek said. Also, the move would free up the 1550 Lot for additional parking.

Real Estate Financing Deal Reached on Terranea Resort Sixteen months after it opened amid concerns of uncertainty and terrible economic conditions, Terranea Resort finds itself under a new financial regime.

Lowe Enterprises, the Los Angeles based developer that oversaw building of the $480 million complex in Rancho Palos Verdes, announced that it had reached a deal to provide “for the long-term stability of Terranea Resort.”

According to a press release from Lowe, the deal includes an extension of loans on Terranea and “new capital commitments of over $100 million.”

ST Residential, the consortium created when the FDIC sold most of the loans held by now-defunct Corus Bank to Starwood Capital and other investors, still holds the loans and has contributed capital, the release stated.

ST Residential acquired the second loan on Terranea that has been held by an investment company controlled by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates. That company, Cascade investment, has worked closely with Lowe on previous projects.

Lowe’s resort management subsidiary, Destination Hotels & Resorts, will continue to run Terranea. Maintaining that continuity has been a major concern of local government officials – who has last year weighed loaning $8.2 million in hotel taxes to Lowe before the resort opened.

Lenders to Terranea in August 2009 had filed notices of default against the property, and other groups have filed multiple lawsuits against the Lowe subsidiary that is the official developer- individual investors who hoped to own parttime vacation properties at the resort have also filed lawsuits. It’s not clear how this deal will affect those cases.

25 Self-Made Teenage Millionaires Have These 7 Things in Common Nick Tart and his business partner are only 22, but they've already become experts in Generation-Y entrepreneurship.

After interviewing 25 self-made 6-figure+ teenage entrepreneurs, the pair authored the book: 50 Interviews: Young Entrepreneurs, What It Takes To Make More Than Your Parents.

What they found is that all the entrepreneurs shared a lot of similar traits. These kids were lemonade stand sellers on steroids, hustling classmates in elementary school and staying in on weekends to work on their businesses.

Here is what separated these successful teens from their other, ordinary classmates.

Family support and encouragement All 25 teenagers came from families that didn't doubt their ambitions. This doesn't mean that the entrepreneurs received financial support. We're talking about emotional support.

With the exception of Catherine Cook, the founder of MyYearbook.com who received seed money from her brother, most young millionaires Tart interviewed funded their own projects.

Some were given loans that they later paid back. One received $10 from his parents to buy a domain name. Emil Motycka, a 21-year-old who made his money with a commercial lawn mowing business, co-signed an $8K loan to buy his first lawn mower. Both paid off their debt within a year.

Like the rest of their generation, these entrepreneurs were told they were special.

This time, they actually were.

Start with something manageable Whether it was blogging or pushing a lawn mower, each young millionaire started with an idea they could actually execute. Tackling something manageable built their confidence, and it helped them build reputations as entrepreneurs. "I think all of them are getting into more substantial businesses now," says Tart, "but they had to start small to build their names in the business world."

One example is Juliette Brindak, 21-year-old founder of MissOAndFriends.com. After eight years of working on her startup, she received an investment from Proctor & Gamble that led her company to a $15 million valuation. With time, her idea grew from manageable to masterful.

About three months ago, Horowitz came out with another product that produced $1.5 million in revenue in 3 days. None of that would have happened without his 30 failures.

Hard work and being relentless Most entrepreneurs go through a lot of trial and error before they strike gold. The 25 teenagers are no exception.

Adam Horowitz, an 18-year-old entrepreneur, started 30 websites in 3 years before he became successful. Finally, he sold his first six-figure product. After that, he sold another successful product, and then another.

"About three months ago, Horowitz came out with another product that produced $1.5 million in revenue in 3 days," says Tart. "None of that would have happened without his 30 initial failures."

A sacrifice that adults don't have to make: Childhood What do teenagers have to lose? Not a whole lot. Most don't have to pay rent, feed families, or go to work. Fortunate teenagers have no real expenses; they have the freedom to do what they want, when they want, and that includes entrepreneurship.

One thing these 25 kids did have to sacrifice? Their childhood.

Founder Emil Motycka recalls being invited to the pool with friends. He'd turn them down to mow lawns instead. Motycka was made fun of for his business priorities; friends who lacked his responsibilities didn't understand his logic.

Now Motycka's work has paid off and he owns a house his friends frequently take advantage of.

They were told they wouldn't be successful There's no motivation like being told you can't do something. Most of the 25 entrepreneurs Tart interviewed encountered a lot of negativity from teachers and friends. Michael Dunlop is one exceptional example.

School was challenging for Dunlop as a dyslexic student. Teachers told him he wouldn't be successful, and the young entrepreneur dropped out of high school. Despite his disability, Dunlop took up blogging and started Incomediary.com. The site now rakes in 6-figures and has a 12,000 Alexa rating.

"His writing isn't great, but he has millions of readers," says Tart. "Dunlop has an amazing intuition for business, and his opinions are always right."

Catherine Cook, founder of MyYearbook.com, also faced negativity. One year after launching her site, Cook received her first offer to sell. When she refused, the prospective buyer told her, 'You'll never reach the necessary threshold of 3 million users. You're making a big mistake." She quickly proved them wrong. MyYearbook.com now has 22 million users.

They kept personal and business lives separate Gen-Y is supposed to be narcissistic.

But a lot of these youngsters didn't want the glory associated with being a young founder. Four of the 25 interviewed entrepreneurs did not go by their real names.

Part of the reason they're cautious about identities is because of their young age. Another reason is because they want to keep business and social lives separate.

"It's like they wanted to start businesses as fake people," Tart says.

"Catherine Cook [founder of MyYearbook.com] would work on her website only after her college roommate went to bed. She wanted to keep her business to herself and separate it from her personal life."

Young entrepreneurs also don't want their friends to know their rolling in money because people take advantage of them. Andrew Fashion, an entrepreneur who earned $2.5 million and blew it all by his 22nd birthday, learned this the hard way. His friends lived in his house but wouldn't pay him rent, and when he bought a friend a car, they totaled it. These teens have learned the hard way that everyone is not trust-worthy.

They were born sellers According to Tart, most of his interviewees started selling trinkets when they were in grade school.

"Michael Dunlop started selling Pokemon cards. He realized the pieces of cardboard were high in demand and they were way undervalued."

Keith J. Davis sold bubble gum to classmates, a desirable treat that was forbidden by teachers.

Andrew Fashion turned mechanical pencils into rocket launchers.

The young millionaires got practice selling early and never stopped.

So is entrepreneurship nature or nurture? These kids were certainly born with the bug, but they wouldn't have been successful without relentless business attempts and their unmatched drive.

Young entrepreneurs also don’t want their friends to know they are rolling in money because people take advantage of them.

Gerry Garvin’s Sweet Potato Pie Pastry: 2-1/2 cups flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter (2 sticks), cubed 1 egg 1/4 cup cold water 1. In a mixing bowl stir together flour, sugar, and salt. Using a fork, cut in butter until pieces are pea size. Mix egg and water together; sprinkle some of the mixture over flour mixture. Gently toss with a fork. Repeat moistening flour mixture until all of the flour is moistened. Form pastry into a ball; divide dough in half.

2. On a lightly floured surface use your hands to slightly flatten one portion of pastry. Roll into a circle 12 inches in diameter. Ease into pie plate; prick bottom and sides with a fork. Repeat with remaining pastry.

Filling: 6 yams or sweet potatoes 1/2 cup sugar 4 large eggs 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 tablespoon vanilla 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake whole potatoes for 1 hour or until soft. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel and mash them in a large bowl. Add sugar, eggs, cinnamon, sweetened condensed milk, cream, butter, vanilla and cinnamon; mix well.

2. Prebake pastry shells in the 350°F oven for 2 to 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and pour sweet potato mixture evenly into shells. Bake for 35 minutes more or until firm. For more on Chef G. Garvin, CLICK HERE.
