LA Galaxy sign Landon Donovan to multi-year

contract extension The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has signed forward Landon Donovan to a multiyear contract extension that will see him remain a member of the Galaxy for the foreseeable future. The club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 99 goals in 210 games in a Galaxy shirt since joining the club in 2005, Donovan now has 131 goals in his 13-year MLS career, leaving him three goals away from tying the all-time record for goals scored in MLS. In addition to closing in on the MLS regular season scoring record, Donovan, who is already the league’s all-time leader in postseason goals, is the only player to score more than 150 goals combined in MLS regular season and postseason play. “I'm thrilled to continue my career here with the LA Galaxy,” said Donovan. “This organization has always treated me with the utmost respect and I feel truly blessed that I am able to continue playing here. The opportunity to play with the team I love and work to win championships, in front of wonderful fans while also being close to my family is literally a dream come true.”

The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour Starring Beyonce December 3, 2013 Tuesday 8:00 PM Staples Center 1111 S. Figueroa Street Los Angeles, California 90015 TICKETS: http://www.staplescenter.com/ events/detail/beyonce

'She's a song-and-dance trouper. "The Mrs. Carter Show" is a pageant of costumes — white lingerie, black leather, rhinestones, gauzy dresses, a glittery catsuit — along with choreography, fireworks and a second stage at the back of the auditorium… Every detail was in place.' -Jon Pareles, The New York Times It is a tightly choreographed show heavy on spectacle — confetti, explosions… but it is also big on heart and beautifully sung. Beyonce is a belter who has mastered the art of doing so on key in cavernous spaces. Without being preachy, the concert is a clever bit of entertainment that is actually about self-empowerment. THE MRS. CARTER SHOW WORLD TOUR starring BEYONCE, with its explosive special effects and intricate, strobe-laden light show is an artistic triumph and the entertainer's most ambitious undertaking to date. It is bigger in scope than any of her previous shows, fittingly designed for the vastness of arenas and stadiums.

BOOKS WE LOVE Popi’s Place By Rainelle Saunders Purchase at Amazon.com

A popular R&B/jazz club and restaurant, situated in a busy block of Melrose Avenue, Popi's Place has been a Hollywood hot spot for over sixty years, providing live music, seven nights a week, to loyal regulars and a nightly sprinkle of cool celebrities. Every Saturday night, six girlfriends gather to dish dirt, compare love notes, and kick up their heels at their favorite night spot. They are each different in their personal and private lives, but somehow they all blend together to create relationships that survive all kinds of hell.

"I was transported into the world of Popi's Place. It was so good, it left me wanting more!!!" -- Craig Cochran, DreamWorks Animation "The story of six friends sharing love, friendship and secrets, and how the lives of these women are tangled up, messed up and in need of the soul searching which will allow them to be the people they are meant to be. Popi's Place...where truth and faith transcends and illuminates the female spirit in this first, moving novel by Rainelle Saunders." -Tara Sullivan, CEO, Creative Creations

The Wounds of a Gossip By Dr. Beth Ackerman The words of a gossip are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. Proverbs 18:7-8 This has been difficult to write as I can be a guilty party in gossiping. I often participate in these harmful conversations with good intentions of understanding a friendship, out of care, or maybe even to vent. At some point my humanness gets the best of me and I’m not able to control my tongue and pride. My conversations become prideful by allowing myself to feel more of a wife, mother, friend, or colleague. Or I can feel like the more trusted friend because I was the first to know about something intimate. Or perhaps I just want to be seen as “right” by telling my side of the story. I’m sure there are many other examples. (In our church circles you can even occasionally see this in the guise of praying for each other, having the appearance of godliness in our gossip.) It’s all a snare. There are many verses on the dangers of sharing secrets, causing dissention, and gossiping. It does damage to our relationships and hearts. So before we speak, we need to be sure we know our own intent in our conversations with others. It should always be to live humble and peaceful lives. The Golden Rule has been a great guide for me in my conversations – “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophet.” Matthew 7:12

REAL ESTATE: The best kind of home improvements: High-impact, lowmaintenance (BPT) - When it comes to an improvement that brightens your home, enhances its indoor air quality and boosts energy-efficiency, skylights deliver. Unfortunately, early skylights had a reputation for being leaky - a problem that simply doesn't occur with modern, no leak, energy-efficient skylights like those made by Velux America. Preengineered flashing kits (the metal shield that surrounds any opening in a wall or roof) work with all types of roofs, from shingles to metal, to ensure a properly installed skylight won't leak. Need further low-maintenance points to make the case for adding a skylight? Not only do modern skylights keep water out, they're energy efficient as well. Energy Star-qualified, no leak solar-powered fresh air skylights, like those from Velux, deliver fresh air through cost-effective passive ventilation. Adding remote-controlled, solar-powered blinds allows you to easily open or close a fresh air skylight and shade it when the sun hits that part of the roof, boosting the skylight's energy efficiency by 39 percent. Keep the shade open during cold weather to admit warmth and reduce heating costs. A 30 percent federal tax credit on both products and installation costs makes a skylight project even more appealing. Visit www.veluxusa.com for a tax calculator to show your savings for a new installation or replacement skylights and a skylight planner app to show exactly how skylights and blinds will look in any area of your

Study: Kickstarter Beats Indiegogo for Successful Funding

The 2014 Soul is totally transformed!

In the crowdfunding world, it appears Kickstarter is king-- at least according to a recent study. Two freelancers compiled crowdfunding data from the two sites and found that Kickstarter had nearly six times as much funding as Indiegogo. The researchers, Jonathan Lau and Edward Junprung, used Kickstarter’s public data and scraped Indiegogo’s website for data to compare the success of the two different platforms. Lau and Junprung included their methodology in their findings: We built a bot that scraped IGG’s projects section, which supposedly contains all campaigns ever launched. On August 17th when we ran our bot, Indiegogo had about 4900 pages of campaigns. The bot navigated through each page and grabbed the campaign page URL, amount raised, percentage of goal raised, category and time remaining on the campaign. We then threw the numbers into Excel and replicated Kickstarter’s stats table using IGG’s numbers. Lau and Junprung found that Kickstarter has raised $612 million for successful campaigns and Indiegogo had apparently raised only $98 million. Kickstarter and Indiegogo are reported to have raised comparable amounts for unsuccessful projects--$83 million and $70 million, respectively. The study found that Kickstarter has an average success rate of 44 percent, with Indiegogo’s success rate coming in around 34 percent.

Change Vehicle: The 2014 Kia Soul retains its hipster flavor and fun-to-drive hatchback nature while upgrading engine power, interior and ride quality. Pros: Loads of available features; user-friendly controls; ample passenger space; funky style; low price; long warranty. Cons: Limited cargo room versus a few competitors; remains to be seen if ride quality improves with 18-inch wheels.

Additionally, it appears that Kickstarter has had over twice as many campaigns than Indiegogo. But could these numbers be right? One issue: Indiegogo delists campaigns that raise less than $500, whereas Kickstarter does not. Not to mention, Indiegogo claims these numbers are just plain wrong. An Indiegogo spokesperson told Venture Beat that "each alleged Indiegogo statistic in the post that you refer to is inaccurate." But when asked to provide corrections and other data, the spokesperson said it was against the company's policy. In the crowdfunding world, it appears Kickstarter is king-- at least according to a recent study. Two freelancers compiled crowdfunding data from the two sites and found that Kickstarter had nearly six times as much funding as Indiegogo.

(Continued) Indiegogo’s campaign with the greatest funding to date was the Ubuntu Edge with $12,814,196, which was unsuccessful--though Indiegogo allows projects that don’t meet their funding goals to keep their pledged funding for a higher fee.

Affordable Healthcare By Chris L. Hickey, Sr. Ph.D. Health insurance exchanges will commence operation in each state, offering a marketplace where individuals and small businesses can compare policies and premiums, and buy insurance (with a government subsidy if eligible). The California Exchange is called “Covered California.” Beginning in August 2013 you will begin to hear and see an abundance of advertisement about Covered California. Remember, this is California’s version of the Affordable Care Act. Several organizations throughout the state will be conducting town hall meetings and other events in a coordinated Outreach and Education campaign to enlighten individuals, families and small businesses about the requirements, benefits and specificities of In California, as a provision of Covered California, individuals and families with income between 139% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL) are qualified for federal subsidies on a sliding scale if they choose to purchase insurance via the Covered California exchange. In California, individuals and families with income below 139% of the FPL qualify for Medi-Cal. Minimum standards for health insurance policies are to be established (an ‘essential health benefits’), and annual and lifetime coverage caps will be banned. Firms employing 50 or more people but not offering health insurance will also pay a shared responsibility requirement if the government has had to subsidize an employee’s health care. Very small businesses (fewer than 50 eligible employees) will be able to get subsidies if they purchase insurance through an exchange. Co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles are to be eliminated for select health care insurance benefits considered to be part of the “essential benefits package” for Level A or Level B preventive care.

While this is in no way a complete list of the provisions outlined in the act, it does provide an overview of many of the benefits to individuals, families and communities. It is extremely important that you share this information to as many of your family and friends as possible. The Afford- able Care Act and Covered California offer our community an opportunity to see that ALL of our people have Access to Afford- able and Quality Health Care. Be on the lookout for advertisements and information about the various outreach campaigns and events that will be scheduled to provide more information. Additionally, later in the year there will be additional resources available to assist individuals signing up for the coverage that best suits their need and budget. Initial enrollment for 2014 cover- age will be between October 1 and March 31, 2014. For those who enroll on or before December 15 coverage will be effective on January 1, 2014. For enrollment between December 16 to January 15, 2014 coverage is effective February 1, 2014. Learn more about Dr. Hickey at http:// smithpublish.populr.me/dr-chris-l-hickey-sr#.Uh2uxuTiSp .
