2014 Fontana Mayoral, City Council and School Board

LOCAL HISTORY MOMENT: Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario’s Only Cemetery

Candidate Forum

Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario’s only cemetery, was established in 1891 at Mountain and G Street on land owned by Charles Harwood. When Mr. Abraham Oakley passed away, the Oakley family buried Mr. Oakley at the cemetery in Pomona, as many other Ontarians had done previously; however, the Oakley family later decided that they wanted their loved one’s final resting place to be in Ontario. So his remains were moved to the newly established cemetery, establishing its first burial plot. The cemetery was incorporated in 1892 with Charles Harwood, A. G. Kendall, brothers Herbert C. and John W. Oakley and their brother-in-law Isaac Garbutt

The upcoming election will play a crucial role in Fontana’s future, and most importantly will determine who will serve as your representative. Come out to the School Board Candidate Forum and hear directly from the candidates.

as the first board of directors. When visiting Bellevue you will likely recognize many names associated with Ontario history, including Ontario founder George Chaffey and two of his three sons (Andrew and John Burton), Graber Olive House founder C. C. Graber, and Armstrong Nurseries founder John S. Armstrong. Many other local pioneers are interred at the cemetery. Pictured here is undertaker Ed Drew at Bellevue. Jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are the second-fastest growing job sector over the next decade, yet women comprise just 24 percent of the STEM workforce. Why? Many girls do not perceive themselves as being successful in STEM-related careers because they lack real-life role models and lose interest over time, eventually choosing careers in other fields. Grassroots efforts like DeVry University’s STEM Ready initiative introduce high school students to careers in STEM and show high school girls that STEM fields are challenging, rewarding and attainable for them.

Over There Over Here: A Glimpse of the Great War through the Claremont Colleges Archival CollecSeptember 10 - October 5 Honnold/Mudd Library Special Collections Exhibition Gallery, located on the 2nd floor of Honnold. It was supposed to be "the war to end all wars," the Great War from 1914-1918. To this day, scholars still debate its origins and consequences. Descendants of the fallen and the public alike mourn the senseless slaughter of 10 million young men who perished in the trenches, battlefields, and open seas around the globe. Another 7 million civilians died in this conflagration: 1.5 million in the first modern genocide that occurred under the cover of the war in the Armenian populated regions of the Ottoman Empire. The Claremont Colleges honors the lives lost by bringing to light new discoveries in its collections. "Over There, Over Here" has been researched and curated by students who completed Claremont McKenna College's history course, "The Great War," offered by Professor Wendy Lower. The multi-media display showcases artifacts from the conflict such as postcards written from German soldiers, uniforms, photographs, posters, music, and documentary film footage. These glimpses of the war reveal how ordinary soldiers and nurses experienced the carnage, how propaganda mobilized millions on the home front, and how human rights activists provided relief to widows and orphans in Belgium. The Pomona campus was transformed into a training ground. Five Pomona students died in the war; close to 300 served in the US Armed Forces, along with numerous faculty. Claremont Colleges' trustees William L. Honnold and Seeley W. Mudd participated in the Belgium relief campaign. Using materials from the Honnold/Mudd Library Special Collections and supplemented with objects loaned by faculty at Claremont McKenna College, these forgotten stories will now be told for the first time on this, the centenary of the start of the Great War. The exhibition will be on display from September 10 through October 5 in the Honnold/Mudd Library Special Collections Exhibition Gallery, located on the 2nd floor of Honnold. Five ways to save big money on your cellphone bill

(BPT) - Cellphone plans these days can top $100 or even $200 a month, once you include the cost of data. That's a lot of cash just to stay connected. Fortunately, consumers can take a few easy steps to slash their bills - without sacrificing quality. 1. Switch to a no-contract provider You can cut your phone bill in half, or more, simply by switching to a no-contract provider. Consumer advocates point to nocontract plans as a smart option for consumers, offering competitive quality at substantial savings. What about the quality of service? Not to worry: Many no-contract providers use the same networks as the big carriers. Look for language like "uses the world's largest GSM network." That just means they route calls over the same towers as one of the big networks. No-contract plans are soaring in popularity. Nationwide, one in four cellphone owners has a no-contract plan. Consumer advocates are cheering the trend. "Many consumers don't realize the savings that are available simply by switching carriers," says Norman Klugman, chief operating officer of Pure TalkUSA, a leading no-contract provider. "Some of our customers have saved hundreds of dollars a year - in at least one case, enough to go on a Caribbean cruise." 2. Rely on Wi-Fi for data usage The biggest reason cellphone bills are soaring is the cost of data. Everyone loves to stream music and video on the go and many people are paying big bucks for the privilege. Take a look at your cellphone bill and see how much data you're using each month. Chances are you can cut down on that number by using Wi-Fi wherever it's available, which won't count against your monthly data allotment.

Once your data usage levels off to a more reasonable level, make sure you aren't paying for more than you need. You may be able to switch to a cheaper plan that includes less data. 3. Ditch unlimited talk and text messaging plans Many cellphone users pay for unlimited talk and text, which is often necessary. Try limiting your monthly minutes and text message use and see if you can get by on a more slimmed-down, cheaper plan. How do you cut back on minutes? Many apps, such as Skype, offer free talk services over Wi-Fi that enable you to chat with friends without running up your bill. Texting apps such as WhatsApp and GroupMe allow you to send messages for free. 4. Stop using 411 and other paid directories We've all been there. You're in a tough spot and can't find the number of the closest gas station or pharmacy, so you dial 411 on your cellphone. Using 411 and other paid directories can add up quickly, costing a couple of dollars for each call. Instead, try using your Wi-Fi connection to look up information on your phone's Internet browser or maps application. Leading Web search engines like Google and Bing also offer free directory services.

5. Consider a family plan It's economics 101: buying in bulk saves money. This holds true for phone service, too. Most carriers offer some kind of family plan that offers meaningful discounts for getting the entire clan on the same calling plan. Some even offer shared data packages.

Get In On Ralphs Free Friday Download!

1/4 cup water Spray or line (with a slow cooker bag) a 5-6 quart slow cooker. In a heavy large skillet, heat the 1 tbs of oil and brown chicken very well on both sides. Place browned chicken in slow cooker. Saute garlic and ginger in the same pan you browned the chicken for about 1 minute. Add the 1/4 cup water, scraping up all the browned bits at the bottom of the pan. Add the soy sauce, honey, sherry, molasses and vinegar. Stir well and pour over chicken in slow cooker. Cover slow cooker and cook on HI for 4-5 hours (or until chicken is done) Remove the chicken from the slow cooker. Add the sesame oil to the remaining slow cooker juices. Mix cornstarch with 1/4 cup water. With slow cooker set to HI, slowly add the cornstarch mixture and stir until sauce is thickened. Let bubble about 1 minute to swell and cook the cornstarch. NOTE: You may want to remove the juice to another pan if you used skinon chicken as there will be fat. It will be easier to skim the fat if you remove to another pan. Preheat broiler to high. Place chicken on a broiler pan. Broil about 3 minutes each side or until chicken surface is slightly caramelized and bubbly.
