The City of Fontana was ranked No. 1 among large cities in the Inland Empire in annual retail sales growth during the last five years, city officials said.

Positive news for the local economy: Fontana was ranked No. 1 among large cities in the Inland Empire in annual retail sales growth during the last five years, city officials said. In the 2013 Edition of the California Retail Survey, Fontana was ranked fourth overall in California based on average annual growth of sales in the state's 50 largest retail markets for the past five years. To be included in this analysis, the local market had to have annual retail sales in excess of $1 billion per year.

Fontana was ranked just behind the cities of Milpitas, Buena Park and Long Beach. Notable market areas that Fontana surpassed in the survey included San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Los Angeles, San Jose and San Diego. Ontario was rated 45th and Rancho Cucamonga 49th. Mayor Acquanetta Warren said the city’s "Open for Business" philosophy is paying large dividends. "Retail growth means both jobs and sales tax revenues that are critical to providing services within a growing community,” Warren said. “I am very proud of Fontana's five-year track record, leading the state in retail growth during a very difficult economic period. The positive survey is an independent report card on the policies and leadership provided within our community. Fontana is committed to support and assist our business community in every way possible." Members of the City Council recently returned from a trip to the International Conference of Shopping Centers (ICSC). Efforts made at events such as ICSC continue to promote Fontana in the retail industry. Retail is particularly important to the Fontana as it generates sales tax, which is the largest revenue stream flowing to the city, officials said.

CITY OF ONTARIO:

Neighborhood Watch Block Captains Meeting for Ontario Night Out Kick-Off

CITY OF RIVERSIDE:

Local School District Endorses Measure A

RIVERSIDE, CA – With the June 4 Riverside municipal election approaching, Alvord Unified School District Governing Board (“Alvord”) adopted a resolution in support of Measure A. Measure A reauthorizes the transfer of a fixed percentage of water fund revenues into the City’s general fund for essential city services, including programs that support local schools. Alvord is one of two school districts located within the City of Riverside. Alvord has fourteen elementary schools; four traditional middle schools; two comprehensive high schools, and one continuation high school with an adult education program.

This Wednesday, June 5, the Neighborhood Watch Block Captains Meeting for Ontario Night Out Kick-Off meeting will be held at the Ontario Police Department (2500 South Archibald Avenue) beginning at 7 PM. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, enhance participation in local anticrime efforts, and strengthen our community’s partnerships with law enforcement. For more information, please contact the Ontario Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at (909) 395-2093.

“The City recognizes that our schools have weathered some tough times recently” said Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey. “Measure A funds would allow the city to continue financial support to help maintain safety in our local schools.” Should Measure A fail, the City will be forced to cut key services that support our schools, including the elimination of all crossing guards, and cutting school resource officer funding. Other potential cuts include the 311 system, youth swimming lessons at local pools, half the funding for the Janet Goeske Senior Center, and the citywide Wi-Fi program.

CITY OF RIALTO

“Riverside is a community that works together” said Art Kaspereen, Jr., President of the Alvord Unified School District Board of Education. “Without these funds our schools stand to lose needed funds used for programs to help keep our kids safe.”

Attention Rialto Businesses!

Riverside voters have voted three times to allow the transfer, and Measure A simply reaffirms these previous voter actions. The transfer of a fixed percentage of water funs revenues will continue if more than 50 percent of voters casting ballots vote “yes” on Measure A. If the measure does not receive a majority vote, the City Council will have to cut $6.7 million from City of Riverside, California www.riversideca.gov the 2013-14 budget and take a similar amount from the city’s roughly $40 million in reserves to finish out the 2012-13 budget.

Have a fire extinguisher, but not sure how to use it? Let us help you! Call the Rialto Fire Department Prevention Division and set up an appointment. We will provide you and your employees with hands on training on how and when to use a fire extinguisher.

909-820-2691 kwalton@confire.org

Riverside voters should have their ballots by now. They must be returned by June 4. The election is being conducted by mail; there is no polling place voting. If Measure A were to fail, the exact cuts would be determined by the City Council next month.

Our Role in Community Leadership Development By Dr. Chris L. Hickey, Sr.

On Saturday, March 23rd I had the enthralling experience of doing my doctoral oral presentation in the presence of my family and close friends. Subsequently, I earned my Ph.D. in Leadership and Change from Antioch University. My dissertation topic was titled, “The Phenomenal Characteristics of the Son-Father Relationship Experience” where I asked the central question, “How is leadership development influenced by the emotional characteristics of the son-father relationship experience?” My enthusiasm for conducting this research revolved around my assertion of its applicability to youth leadership development programs, with respect to the potential to add an emphasis on Leadership values and practices that cultivate healthy sustainable relationships; consistent with responsible and effective parent involvement and planning; family leadership; and, community support. While my research resulted in the acknowledgment of an anecdotal connection between how young men are (or should be) affected by the leadership qualities of their fathers, very little was specifically articulated about how the participants of my research felt their own leadership development was influenced by the relationship experience, particularly juxtaposed to the amount of attention the participants spent on describing their feelings and emotions about their son-father relationship experience.

Clearly, the articulation of feelings and emotions on the topic is not only significant, but also provides a platform for further study and consideration. However, having had a brief time now to reflect on the implications of my research (without the pressure of having to prove my scholarship to my approving panel); I am particularly interested in the youth leadership development questions discussed with my participants. Moreover, I now find the requisite to continue my interest in Leadership development opportunities that facilitate the acquirement of values and practices that cultivate sustainable relationships and facilitates family and community uplifting. I remain committed to my research on the connection between the son-father relationship experience and how men and boys articulate how it affects leadership development. However, I am now equally committed to understanding how those of us (men and women) who are credited as Community Leaders influence and affect Leadership development in the youth that reside in our community. With respect to this broader objective, I am asking of myself and other purported Community Leaders to begin reflecting on the specific values and practices we engage in that can be considered as directly influencing the development of Leadership in our youth. During our daily interactions with each other (and possible adversaries we seek to influence), what sort of Leadership example are we setting for the youth we advocate for? How are we involving youth in our advocacy? What are we learning from our direct relationship with them?

Do we allow our youth a voice? Do we accept viable diverse positions from our youth, even if they differ from our own? I suggest that it is not enough to change to the social, education and financial condition of those we represent and advocate for, but moreover, the true and sustainable quality of our Leadership is found in how we affect observable and direct change in those we purport to lead.

Content Tips “It makes me happy if I can help Latinos be more comfortable in their own skin.

In their text Youth Leadership: A guide to understanding leadership development in adolescents, Linden and Fertman suggest, “Leadership development emphasizes adults’ interaction with teenagers. Instead of fulfilling their traditional roles, counselors, employers, youth workers, principles, and teachers serve as facilitators and help adolescents augment their leadership knowledge, attitudes, communication, decisionmaking, and stress-management skills (p. 178). As Community Leaders, we are no less responsible for the development of such leadership skills in the youth that will be expected to take our place and assume various Leadership roles in our community. What is your commitment to Youth Leadership Development? Dr. Chris L. The Obama Administration announces $1 billion initiative to launch Health Care Innovation Awards to provide better health care and lower costs Made possible by the Affordable Care Act, the Health Care Innovation Awards provides another opportunity to improve the quality of health care and bring down costs for taxpayers and patients. The health care law includes many tools to avoid costly mistakes and readmissions, keep patients healthy, reward quality instead of quantity, and create health information technology infrastructure that enables new payment and delivery models to work. The provisions in the Affordable Care Act are already working to reduce costs: Medicare spending per beneficiary increased by just 0.4 percent last year, far below historical averages.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently announced a nearly $1 billion initiative that will fund awards and evaluation to build on the Obama administration’s work to transform the health care system by delivering better care and lowering costs. This second round of Health Care Innovation Awards will fund applicants that have a high likelihood of driving health care system transformation and

“These awards will continue our work to drive down health care costs while providing high quality care to all Americans, and I’m excited to see the innovative ideas these applicants will bring to the table,” Secretary Sebelius said. “Organizations from the public and private sectors throughout the country are finding creative solutions to our health care system challenges and these awards will continue to stimulate these ideas.” 1. Boosts your immune system Lemons are high in vitamin C, witch is great for fighting colds. They are high in potassium, witch stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure. 2. Balances pH Drink lemon water every day and you will reduce your body’s overall acidity. Lemon is one of the most alkaline foods around. Yes lemons have citric acid but it doesn’t create acidity in the body once metabolized. 3. Helps with weight loss Lemons are high in pectin fiber, witch helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster. 4. Promotes digestion Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that is required for digestion. Efficient digestion reduces heartburn and constipation. 5. It is a diuretic Lemons increase the rate of urination in the body, which helps purify it. Toxins are released at faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.

6. Clears the skin The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Warm lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well. You can apply it directly to scars to help reduce their appearance. 7. Freshens breath Not only that, it can also help relive tooth pain and gingivitis. Careful though….the citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so monitor the amount you are drinking. 8. Relives respiratory problems Warm lemon water helps get rid of chest infections and coughs. It’s known to be helpful to people with asthma and allergies as well. 9. Keeps you Zen Vitamin C is one of the first things depleted when you are under stress. 10. Helps kick the coffee habit After taking a glass of warm lemon water, you will have less craving for coffee in the morning. So why does the water have to be warm not cold? Cold water likely provides a shock or stress factor to the body. Your body has to expel energy to process the cold water.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC APPRECIATION MONTH

A

frican American Music Appreciation Month (formerly known as Black Music Month) began in 1979 when Kenny Gamble, Ed Wright, and Dyana Williams developed the idea to set aside a month dedicated to celebrating the impact of black music. Created by music business insiders, the group successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter to host a reception on June 7th, 1979 to formally recognize the cultural and financial contributions of black music. Since 1979, African American Music Appreciation Month has grown from a commemoration to national proportions with extravaganza across the country.

In 2009, President Barack Obama further defined June as African American Music Appreciation Month who declared the start of summer as a celebration for all the black "musicians, composers, singers, and songwriters [who] have made enormous contributions to our culture."

“The music of our Nation has always spoken to the condition of our people and reflected the diversity of our Union. African-American musicians, composers, singers, and songwriters have made enormous contributions to our culture by capturing the hardships and aspirations of a community and reminding us of our shared values.” In 2000, US-Representative Chaka Fattah sponsored House Resolution 509, which formally recognized the importance of Black music on culture and the economy during President Bill Clinton’s administration..

.

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION The legacy of African-American composers, singers, songwriters, and musicians is an indelible piece of our Nation's culture. Generations of African Americans have carried forward the musical traditions of their forebears, blending old styles with innovative rhythms and sounds. They have enriched American music and captured the diversity of our Nation. During African-American Music Appreciation Month, we honor this rich heritage. This legacy tells a story of ingenuity and faith. Amidst the injustice of slavery, African Americans lifted their voices to the heavens through spirituals. This religious music united African Americans and helped sustain them through one of the darkest periods in our Nation's history. Years later, spirituals contributed to the advent of a new form of music: gospel. Both styles incorporated elements of African music and were rooted in faith. The African-American music tradition also reflects creativity and individualism. Blues, jazz, soul, and rock and roll synthesize various musical traditions to create altogether new sounds. Their novel chord progressions, improvisation, and mood showcase individual musicians while also creating a cohesive musical unit. In addition, African-American composers have thrived in traditional genres such as musical theater, opera, classical symphony, and choral music, providing their unique imprint and creatively growing these forms of music. All of these contributions are treasured across America and the world. theater, opera, classical symphony, and choral music, providing their unique imprint and creatively growing these forms of music.
