(BPT) - Fall has finally arrived, meaning it's time for the kids to hit the school books. And as the leaves gradually morph from green to gold, your driving schedule quickly accelerates from leisurely cruising to nonstop go, go, go. Besides taking the kids to and from school, there are plenty of after-school activities football practice, cheerleading tryouts, piano lessons and math tutors - that require additional drive time. Maybe a big-game tailgating party is on the agenda, too? Before the crazed driving crunch hits, you might want to make sure your car, truck, SUV or van is ready for the back-to-school rush and good to go through the fast-approaching holiday season. According to Peter MacGillivray, vice president of events and communication for the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), an automotive trade organization with 6,500-plus member companies, there are endless amounts of innovative auto-enhancing products to help during the frantic driving season. "For 50-plus years, SEMA-member companies have been designing and producing clever, high-tech products that improve a vehicle's appearance, comfort, performance and even fuel-savings," said MacGillivray. Consumers can find these products and more at www.enjoythedrive.com. "As families go back to school, many find themselves spending more time in their vehicles. There are automotive accessories that can make the overall ride better and a lot less stressful." 1. Sit down: Best way to make passengers (and yourself) happy is to be comfortable. There are plenty of aftermarket seat-enhancing products from soft cushions to luxurious new car seats. There are also high-tech booster chairs and seats that have folding desks/trays which are ideal for last-minute homework. 2. Child alert: For the ultimate in safety there are "future-is-now" seats with phone apps that detect and warn when the child wiggles out of the seat and another that has a mobile notification system to alert parents if they accidently left a child in a car seat. It also provides detailed information about the temperature inside the car. "These are just a few samples of the aftermarket products available for your vehicle," says MacGillivray. "Most auto parts stores and national chains carry them, and you can easily find them online, too."

Gluten-free meals with 'wow' factor, from breakfast to dinner (BPT) - Whether it’s gluten intolerance or a goal of healthier eating that drives your gluten-free meal plans, you can enjoy great meals from breakfast to dinner (and everything in between). The expanding availability of gluten-free substitutes for favorites like tortillas, breads and pastas means that you don’t need to give up the dishes you love. Get your gluten-free menu started with these tips for meals throughout the day. Breakfast * Breakfast burrito bar – Set out an array of gluten-free ingredients, like scrambled eggs, vegetables and cheese, for your family to mix and match. Fold it all up in black rice tortillas made by Food For Life, which are highly nutritious – black rice boasts antioxidant levels on par with “superfruits” like acai and blackberries. Lunch * Seasoned quesadillas – Add a little something extra to your classic quesadilla, that well-loved snack of melted cheese between two gluten-free tortillas. Try adding a variety of cheeses and boosting the flavor with herbs and spice mixes. Dinner * A new take on pizza – Using gluten-free tortillas, the whole family can create personalized mini-pizzas with thin, crunchy crusts. Simply assemble the toppings of choice and either grill or toast in the oven. For more ideas, go to www.foodforlife.com.

Last year, you helped us raise $2.1 million for kids in our communities and afterschool programs. It’s time to up the ante! Like if you’ll donate your spare change at the register and help us beat last year’s total! Learn more about this worthwhile program at http://www.ralphs.com

Affordable Healthcare By Chris L. Hickey, Sr. Ph.D. Health insurance exchanges will commence operation in each state, offering a marketplace where individuals and small businesses can compare policies and premiums, and buy insurance (with a government subsidy if eligible). The California Exchange is called “Covered California.” Beginning in August 2013 you will begin to hear and see an abundance of advertisement about Covered California. Remember, this is California’s version of the Affordable Care Act. Several organizations throughout the state will be conducting town hall meetings and other events in a coordinated Outreach and Education campaign to enlighten individuals, families and small businesses about the requirements, benefits and specificities of Covered California. Each One–Teach One Alliance for Academic Access, Achievement and Success is also planning a series of Town Hall Meetings to elaborate on the broader issues discussed in future installments of this column. In California, as a provision of Covered California, individuals and families with income between 139% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL) are qualified for federal subsidies on a sliding scale if they choose to purchase insurance via the Covered California exchange. In California, individuals and families with income below 139% of the FPL qualify for Medi-Cal. Minimum standards for health insurance policies are to be established (an ‘essential health benefits’), and annual and lifetime coverage caps will be banned. Firms employing 50 or more people but not offering health insurance will also pay a shared responsibility requirement if the government has had to subsidize an employee’s health care. Very small businesses (fewer than 50 eligible employees) will be able to get subsidies if they purchase insurance through an exchange. Co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles are to be eliminated for select health care insurance benefits considered to be part of the “essential benefits package” for Level A or Level B preventive care.

While this is in no way a complete list of the provisions outlined in the act, it does provide an overview of many of the benefits to individuals, families and communities. It is extremely important that you share this information to as many of your family and friends as possible. The Afford- able Care Act and Covered California offer our community an opportunity to see that ALL of our people have Access to Afford- able and Quality Health Care. Be on the lookout for advertisements and information about the various outreach campaigns and events that will be scheduled to provide more information. Additionally, later in the year there will be additional resources available to assist individuals signing up for the coverage that best suits their need and budget. Initial enrollment for 2014 cover- age will be between October 1 and March 31, 2014. For those who enroll on or before December 15 coverage will be effective on January 1, 2014. For enrollment between December 16 to January 15, 2014 coverage is effective February 1, 2014. Learn more about Dr. Hickey at http://smithpublish.populr.me/dr-chris-l-hickeysr#.Uh-2uxuTiSp .
