EL CAMINO COLLEGE - South Bay Students Enjoy Space Science Day at El Camino College At Onizuka Space Science Day, students participated in hands-on science activities and experiments, egg drop and paper airplane competitions, and classroom presentations and demonstrations led by ECC professors and guests from institutions such as Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

Nearly 1,000 serious-minded science students in grades five through 12 attended Onizuka Space Science Day 2017 at El Camino College on March 11. The day featured dozens of scientific hands-on activities and a presentation from NASA astronaut Dr. Kjell Lindgren.

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident where Ellison Onizuka perished along with six other crew members. The annual event was created to honor Onizuka’s memory and his dream of inspiring youth to strive for their career goals. The Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, El Camino College, and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. sponsor the free hands-on conference each year.

Lindgren, who spent 141 days in orbit aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and logged 15 hours and four minutes of spacewalk time, began training with NASA in 2009. While on ISS, he and his crewmates took part in more than 100 scientific experiments, including research in human physiology, fluid and combustion physics, Earth and space science and technology development. Research included the ground-breaking “veggie” lettuce experiment – the first time a U.S. crew has eaten a crop grown in orbit. Among other honors, Lindgren was awarded the 2016 NASA Distinguished Service Medal, 2016 NASA Space Flight Medal, and the 2013 NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal.

5 Tips for Managing Diabetes (Family Features) Living with diabetes is no laughing matter, but as many would say, laughter is often the best medicine. This is certainly true for comedic actress Yvette Nicole Brown, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013. In partnership with the American Diabetes Association and Colgate Total through the “Laugh Out Loud” campaign, Brown offers the following tips for a healthy smile and managing diabetes with a touch of humor. Get Moving When it comes to diabetes, small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Taking the first step toward exercising can be difficult for many, but a little bit goes a long way. Try parking further away from the door, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or taking the longer route when you walk the dog. Whatever it may be, choose an activity that you enjoy doing and keep it consistent Give Your Smile Some Extra TLC You’re twice as likely to develop gum disease if you have diabetes. When Brown learned that, she immediately started taking better care of her teeth. She recommends brushing morning and night with a specially formulated toothpaste like Colgate Total, which reduces 83 percent more germs that cause gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease, as compared to an ordinary non -antibacterial toothpaste. Befriend Your Dentist Don’t be afraid to become friends with your dentist. Brown has her dentist on speed-dial, even calling or texting him in the middle of the night sometimes. You don’t have to be best friends with your dentist, but it’s crucial to establish a good relationship. They’re the expert who you can turn to for all your oral health care needs, and oral health care is important for those living with diabetes.

Find Your Tribe When you’re living with diabetes, you need a strong support system. Be it friends, family or an online community, things are easier when you’ve got your tribe. A good place to get your questions answered and find people who are going through the same journey as you is OralHealthandDiabetes.com. Live Confidently “Every time I think about my type 2 diabetes, I say to myself ‘So what? You are a strong, confident woman. Don’t let your diabetes run your life,’” Brown said. Diabetes isn’t a hindrance, it’s just a slight hiccup in life that you learn to live with. Get your mindset right, don’t let it dictate what you can or cannot do. When Brown was a kid her mom would say, “Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.” That’s sometimes what people do when they get any kind of health diagnosis. The first response is, “Oh no,” and then you find a way around it. New Neighborhood in East Torrance Fulfills Need of Extremely Underserved Area All 60 Homes at Brighton, a New Community in the South Bay, Have Been Sold. New Neighborhood in East Torrance Fulfills Need of Extremely Underserved Area

WEST CARSON, CA- - Brandywine Homes announced that all 60 single-family detached homes at Brighton, a 4.46-acre community in unincorporated West Carson just east of Torrance in southwestern Los Angeles County, have been sold. "We're not surprised buyers snapped up these spacious, versatile homes," said Dave Barisic, principal in charge of sales and marketing at Brandywine Homes, a pioneer of infill development in Southern California. "Brighton's convenient location can't be beat, with award-winning schools, parks and great shopping nearby, yet quality homes here are hard to find." Brighton is one of only a handful of new home communities in the South Bay area. With a population approaching one million, Torrance and other nearby communities face a housing shortage because the existing supply is aging and developable land is scarce. The area offers diverse employment and serves as a residential area for downtown Los Angeles. Brighton offered three- and four-bedroom homes ranging from 1,639 to 2,000 square feet, designed to appeal to young singles and couples, growing families, established families with children and empty nesters with prices starting in the $500,000s.

With its proximity to Interstate 405, the 110 Freeway and the Pacific Coast Highway, Brighton is within easy commuting distance to 3.1 million jobs, the Los Angeles International Airport and downtown Los Angeles, near excellent schools and shopping and within a mile and a half of 10 public parks. About Brandywine Homes Brandywine Homes is a residential homebuilder based in Irvine, Calif., with over two decades of experience in developing challenging infill sites, revitalizing some of Southern California's oldest and most established neighborhoods. Founded in 1994, the family-owned and operated company has built or developed almost 60 small- and mid -sized infill communities totaling $1.1 billion in revenues. . The company builds homes that respect and complement the heritage, values and architectural integrity of existing neighborhoods and the people who live there -- making a positive contribution to the community.
