Black History Month,
or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. 1

Mayor Robert Garcia, Representative Alan Lowenthal, Councilwoman Suzie Price and the Los Angeles District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the signing ceremony for the East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Study “Improving our ecosystem and coastal experience is a win for residents and visitors, and will be a boost to the Long Beach economy," said Mayor Robert Garcia. "This is an opportunity to transform our beaches and our city, and I want to thank the Army Corps for their support of moving forward." The East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Study will focus primarily on restoring the aquatic ecosystem. Officials will conduct engineering analysis that will include coastal engineering, as well as geotechnical engineering design of any alternative affecting the Long Beach Breakwater, including wave modeling to assess surface wave effects on infrastructure, navigation and recreation, and circulation modeling that will show movement of water within the East San Pedro Bay. These expert evaluations will shed light on opportunities for kelp, eelgrass, and wetlands restoration within the East San Pedro Bay. Read more at www.longbeach.gov/linkLB

World Cycling League is set to kick off at #StubHubCenter on March 18-19! Elected officials, industry professionals, faculty, alumni, and campus leaders were guided by knowledgeable California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) students as they toured the university’s new Orthotics and Prosthetics Education Center (O&P center) in Los Alamitos during a ribboncutting event on Jan. 14. The event provided attendees the opportunity to see, touch and learn about current O&P applications, such as 3-D scanning, prosthetic systems, and the variety of state-of-the-art techniques and equipment available to O&P master’s students in the 12,000 square-foot center. Among those taking the tours, and providing remarks later in the evening, were CSUDH President Willie J. Hagan; U.S. Congressman Alan Lowenthal, who represents California’s 47th district; Los Alamitos Mayor Richard Murphy; and alumnus Glenn Matsushima, founder of the Prosthetic & Orthotic Group in Signal Hill. “We custom designed and built this center and program. It’s a fantastic facility and is the second largest of its type in a public university in the United States,” said Scott Hornbeak, director of the O&P center and program. “That’s something to be proud of because we serve thousands of patients, not only locally, but throughout the nation. We are also proud because we prepare orthotics and prosthetics professionals to go into the workforce and serve in urban, underserved, and rural communities—people from all walks of life.” READ MORE http://www.csudhnews.com/2016/01/op-ribboncutting/

University Art Gallery Opens ‘Wild Land’ and ‘Urban Transformations’ Exhibits of Landscape Art Hudson River School American landscape art movement founder Thomas Cole was not only an iconic 19th-century artist but a conservational visionary whose ideas on the natural world heralded the sense of American identity that we know today. “Wild Land: Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Landscape Painting,” the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) On the Road traveling exhibition exploring Cole’s role as an artistic and cultural pioneer, opens Feb. 3 and runs through March 14 at the University Art Gallery at California State University, Dominguez Hills Through a combination of large-scale banner graphics (reproductions of Cole’s paintings), immersive environments and other elements, “Wild Land” takes audiences on a journey with Cole through the story of his creative process, revealing the ways in which he, and other artists of his time, pioneered cultural conversations that shaped our national landscape— intellectually, physically, and visually. The exhibition also examines how the meaning of nature has changed over time into a source for creative and intellectual inspiration. To expand on the theme of art and nature in a more modern context, the University Art Gallery has curated a concurrent companion exhibition, “Urban Transformations: The Contempoary Landscape,” featuring photography, sculpture and painting by five Los Angeles artists. “Urban Transformations” includes the eerie, precise urban drawings of Jennifer Celio, a large-scale sculpture installation by Macha Suzuki, and lush, luminous paintings of tropical plants on handmade paper from CSUDH associate professor of art Devon Tsuno’s “Horticulture Series.” Also included will be work by painter Sarah Arnold and photographer and CSUDH professor emerita of art Louise Ivers. An opening reception for both exhibitions will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. and will include “A Conversation with Artist Devon Tsuno” at 6 p.m. “Wild Land: Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Landscape Painting” has been made possible by NEH On the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibition was organized by the Thomas Cole National Historic Site/Cedar Grove in Catskill, New York and was adapted and toured by Mid-America Arts Alliance through NEH on the Road. NEH on the Road offers an exciting opportunity for communities of all sizes to experience some of the best exhibitions funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Mid-America Arts Alliance was founded in 1972 and is the oldest regional nonprofit arts organization in the United States. For more information, visit www.maaa.org or www.nehontheroad.org.

Natural Remedies for Hypoglycemia (low blood Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occurs when your body does not have enough sugar in its system to use as fuel. The result can include headaches, shakiness, confusion, irritability, anxiety, and weakness. While any period of hypoglycemia should be reported to your physician, there are some natural remedies that you can turn to for immediate and continued relief.. The goal of these remedies is to stabilize the body’s sugar levels and supply the body with a constant source of energy.
Apples Apples (organic) are rich in chromium and magnesium, which both help regulate blood sugar. Shoot for two apples a day. If hypoglycemia hits you often, be sure to keep an apple or two nearby.
Molasses Molasses has been found to be very useful when fighting low blood sugar. You can make a homemade tonic by adding a small amount of molasses to a glass of water for a lemonade-like beverage, preventing the weak-kneed feeling that accompanies hypoglycemia. As a daily remedy, drink twice a day.
Dandelion Root Because it is an excellent source of calcium, dandelion is great for hypoglycemia sufferers. The calcium in the root assists with proper functioning of the pancreas and liver, which in turn helps correct the blood sugar levels in the body. Learn more at http://www.voxnature.com/
