What shoots intend to do in the 2012/2013 season The Smiths Gore and GunsOnPegs Shoot Intentions Survey, now in its fourth year and supported by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, is designed to provide a snapshot of the economic opportunities and challenges anticipated by the sport for the forthcoming season. 155 shoots told us their intentions for the 2012/2013 season, up by 40% on last year.

Interpreting net balance An increase in net balance shows the proportion of shoots reporting a rise in optimism (or birds put down, bookings or charges) minus those reporting a fall. For example, if +30% reported a rise and -5% reported a fall, the net balance will be +25%.

1 Shoots optimistic about 2012/2013 season 28% of shoots were optimistic about the 2012/13 season, compared with 21% last year (+35% were more optimistic and -7% less optimistic, so a net balance of +28%)

2 Shoots continue to increase bird numbers 9% more shoots are increasing bird numbers than reducing them (+18% are increasing numbers and -9% are reducing them, so a net balance of +9%)

Most shoots are keeping bird numbers at the same level as last year (73%) Bird numbers are increasing most on 'optimistic' shoots

Of the shoots that are optimistic about the future, 25% more shoots are increasing bird numbers (+29% increasing them and -4% reducing them, so a net balance of +25%). The less optimistic shoots are cutting bird numbers (-45% cutting numbers and +9% increasing them so a net balance of -36%)

(+49% plan to increase charges and -2% to reduce them, so a net balance of +47%)

Only 2% intend to reduce charges

63% of the optimistic shoots intend to increase their charges, reflecting the good demand for their product. Interestingly, a high proportion of the pessimistic shoots (57%) also intend to increase their charges, in order to cover increasing costs
