Set Sail for Fascinating Shores

Since we began offering small-ship expedition cruises with PONANT last year, we haven’t stopped adding exciting itineraries to our repertoire. This year we’re sailing to ports where we haven’t anchored before—places like the historic gem of Kanazawa on Japan’s Honshu coast or the gorgeous Mediterranean island of Elba, where Napoleon’s exile doesn’t seem like such a hardship. In the pages that follow, you’ll find a host of inspiring new voyages filled with the kind of thoughtful discovery and enriching experiences that Smithsonian travelers seek out. As always, each is accompanied by two Smithsonian Journeys Experts, who illuminate the history, wildlife, and culture of the destination, whether you’re transiting the Suez Canal or sailing the majestic fjords of New Zealand’s South Island. We hope to see you on board!

P.S. See even more trips on our website, such as our Solar Eclipse 2023: Indonesia to Australia’s Kimberley voyage and our 2024 Cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage voyage.

Our travelers tell us one of their favorite aspects of our journeys is the fun and engaging learning at the core of every trip. Much of this is provided by our world-class experts who bring meaningful enrichment and insider perspectives. On each Smithsonian/PONANT departure, you will enjoy the companionship and knowledge of two Smithsonian Journeys Experts, who will provide an insightful onboard lecture series that imbues your experience with new perspectives. Commitment to Sustainability

Smithsonian Journeys is committed to sustaining the character and biodiversity of the places we visit by selecting partners and suppliers who meet our standards for responsible travel and supporting regional economies. PONANT was founded in 1988 by officers in the French Merchant Navy to offer high-end, small-ship cruises with a deep commitment to sustainable travel. This commitment is evident in their innovative, CLEANSHIP-certified vessels, designed to minimize impact on the ocean environment, but also in day-to-day operations, in which eliminating single-use plastics and reducing waste are a priority.

Small Ships and Big Experiences

The PONANT ships are designed to accommodate just 184 to 264 guests. And when you’re on shore excursions, you’ll explore in small groups so that you can get up close to sites and experiences. The smaller ship size also allows PONANT to follow best practices for ecologically responsible tourism.

Supporting the Smithsonian Mission

When you travel with Smithsonian Journeys, your participation supports Smithsonian’s mission to preserve natural and cultural heritage, drive research, and engage and inspire people on critical issues affecting our nation and world.
