The World Awaits!
I am delighted to introduce Smithsonian Active Journeys, a new line of trips that combines the authentic, enriching experiences that you expect from Smithsonian, with the reward of discovering a new destination on your own power. Exploring from the trail—or by kayak or bicycle—is the ultimate “slow travel” experience. It gives you a unique perspective and allows you to take your time and soak up your surroundings, to stop to appreciate a spectacular view at the end of a climb or to meander through a village along the trail. When designing these trips, we sought to accentuate both the natural world and local culture. Each journey is led by a local guide steeped in knowledge about the destination. You’ll find opportunities to spend time with people in communities you visit, to sample the cuisine, and learn about everyday life as well as the region’s flora, fauna, and geology. Our Active Journeys offer an intimate and meaningful way to connect with a destination and its people—and to be immersed in the wonders of nature.

Introducing Smithsonian Active Journeys
Getting outside to explore not only does wonders for the body and mind, it is also an extraordinary way to experience the world. We are pleased to present our new Active Journeys: small-group trips that seek out the road less traveled and offer engaging adventures in the great outdoors. While these journeys are designed around activities such as hiking, walking, kayaking, and biking, they bear all the hallmarks of a Smithsonian Journeys travel experience: outstanding local guides, unique enrichment opportunities, and an in-depth exploration of nature and cultural history.
The Trail Is Calling...
From the Alps to the Andes, we’ve selected routes for their spectacular scenery and their accessibility to both occasional and seasoned outdoorspeople. Most hikes and walks range from 3 to 7 miles, with low to moderate elevation changes, and some trips also include opportunities to kayak, canoe, or bike ride (see activity level descriptions on the following page). On certain itineraries, you’ll have the option to take an easier or more challenging route if you wish. After each exhilarating day, you will return to comfortable accommodations chosen for their sense of place and their unbeatable location.
A Sustainable Approach to Small-Group Travel
With just 12 to 18 travelers using mostly their own feet to get around, our groups are attuned to their environment, making a minimal impact on nature and spending time in local communities. You’ll get acquainted with the people and their traditions and support small businesses such as a sustainable coffee farm in Costa Rica and a family-owned restaurant in Iceland.
Smithsonian Active Journeys are run in collaboration with G Adventures, a leading small group adventure travel company and a pioneer in sustainability for more than 30 years.
From promoting community tourism to protecting wildlife while traveling, G Adventures operates with a commitment to traveling responsibly.
Each Active Journey Includes:
• A knowledgeable trip leader and local guides
• Small groups with a maximum of 12 to 18 travelers
• Airport transfers upon arrival and departure
• Daily activities and excursions
• Internal flights where applicable
• Most meals, including all breakfasts and welcome and farewell dinners. Included meals are shown on itinerary pages as breakfast (B), lunch (L), dinner (D).
• Gratuities

Choose the Activity Level That Fits Your Pace
To help you select a journey that suits your pace and ability, we have designated four activity levels: light, moderate, energetic, and strenuous. Light trips typically include 2 to 5 miles of walking or easy hiking on several days of the itinerary, whereas on moderate trips, you’ll hike or walk up to 7 miles on most days with some elevation gain. Energetic trips will have you hiking or trekking 4 to 10 miles most days with significant elevation changes.
For each of these activity levels, the itinerary may also include biking, kayaking, or canoeing. And on certain trips, you’ll have the option to take longer or shorter hikes. Stay tuned for our strenuous journeys: they are reserved for our most rigorous treks and will include 6 to 14 miles of daily hikes or treks over mountainous terrain.
Enrichment Every Step of the Way
Wherever our Active Journeys take you, you’ll gain insights into the area’s cuisine and cultural traditions, wildlife and geology— connecting with local people as well as experts in the field. You may find yourself sitting among mountain gorillas in Rwanda with a knowledgeable park guide—and learning about everyday life while sharing a meal in a family home in Kigali. You’ll bike through the centuries in Ireland’s Aran Islands, getting to know the culture of the Gaeltacht, and revel in traditional Irish music in the pubs of Doolin.
From a glacier expert in Iceland to a shaman in Peru, spend time with people who interpret both the natural and cultural landscape, and complement your time on the trail with cooking classes or wine tastings, guided tours of regional museums, and visits to historic sites.
Unique Accommodations in Ideal Locations
When selecting accommodations for these active trips, we sought unique properties that showcase the region’s natural beauty and capture the local character. We chose them for their comfort and their relaxed atmosphere, and also for their location—sometimes just a few steps from the trailhead. Whether you stay in a lakeside lodge surrounded by Patagonian peaks or a family-owned country inn in Ireland’s music capital, you will find a welcoming retreat after a day exploring the great outdoors. In some cases, your accommodations are an integral part of your experience.
Your home at the end of Spain’s Camino de Santiago is an 18th-century convent just steps from Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral, where you can relax in lovely cloisters and courtyards, dine beneath the arched ceiling of the old refectory, and enjoy a swim with a view in the former laundry house. Settle into a spa resort with a sustainable ethos tucked into the rainforest outside of Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio National Park, and take in Pacific views from the swimming pool or your private balcony. Or stay among the vineyards of Chianti at a delightful agriturismo that dates back to the 1600s and produces its own wine and olive oil.
Leaders With Deep Local Knowledge
Your trip leaders are avid outdoorspeople themselves who come from the region you’re exploring and know the trails, the natural history, and the local culture inside and out. More than trail guides, they are also some of the best tour managers in the business, sensitive to the different needs of the group and able to adapt nimbly to changing circumstances and unexpected opportunities to make the most of each day. With their native knowledge of your destination, they will be your best resource for finding hidden gems in your free time—from restaurants loved by the locals to worthwhile sites to visit.
Along the way, local experts will join you to share their perspectives and insights. It might be a vintner who leads you on a winery tour in Chile’s Maipo Valley or a seasoned guide who can share the little-known stories of famous places on a walk through Edinburgh or Florence.
