Over 26 years... this B & B has been serving the Smithville community, and offers a beautiful getaway nestled around a town filled with small-town charm, walkability, scenery, and friendliness. Amenities allow for a group of friends to gather or a romantic weekend away, whatever you need this is the place for you to escape to! There are six guest rooms each with a private bath as well as cottages just steps away from the back porch of this historic home. Options to consider when planning your stay include king or queen beds, claw foot-tubs, or step-in showers. Be prepared to indulge in a delicious home-cooked breakfast and relax among the trees that canopy the backyard or on the private balcony while you enjoy the morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine as you embrace the peace and quiet.
Rich History This Texas historic landmark was built by J.H. Chancellor, owner of the local mercantile store in the early 1900’s. Mr. Chancellor is remembered for his devotion to good service and as a generous businessman who frequently gave to those in need. By 1941, 201 Ramona was purchased by Dr. Stephens, Division Surgeon for the MKT Railroad, where the home served as both his residence and doctor’s office. The downstairs’ stunning longleaf pine pocket doors separated the waiting area and patient rooms while the 2nd floor was his private living quarters. Babies were born and the sick were cared for. Former patients of Dr. Stephen's are known to stop by from time to time, just to say hello. Continuing with the commitment to service that has braced the home since the founders of The Katy House Bed & Breakfast, Bruce & Sallie Blalock began the process in 1994. They poured twenty years of themselves into establishing this one-of-a-kind B&B as a memorable getaway. Second-generation owners, Linda & Stu Leibowitz, invested their heart and soul in all the fine home details and tailored care for each guest. From the kitchen, guest rooms, cottages, and living spaces, each space has been hand touched by Linda’s design while Stu’s easy-going charm and talent graced the kitchen.

The Priors The legacies each have left are big shoes to fill, but new owners Tiffany & Joe Prior have created the goal to honor the mission of authentically providing a comfortable place for rest, reprieve, and reconnecting to others. Though the Katy House was not in Prior's ‘planned’ life trajectory, it's funny how curveballs can end up being the best ones for you. Mountains were moved for this opportunity to be possible, so daily, Tiffany says, she is humbled to have been given a chance to be part of this home's history. More than anything, though, their family is passionate about caring for others. Tens of thousands of guests have been served over the years in this sweet home. It’s truly the perfect Texas hideaway without sacrificing a day in the car or a trip to the airport. Tiffany and Joe invite you to explore and experience the charm of small-town life. There are so many reasons to come and visit Smithville including access to the Colorado River and an abundance of parks. Smithville has 11 municipal parks that are maintained by the city of Smithville Parks & Recreation Department. Two of the most popular parks in the area are Buescher State Park and Riverbend Park.

Outdoors Riverbend Park Located at 107 Hwy 71 W, in Smithville, just west of the Colorado River bridge, is the city’s finest outdoor recreational spot. This park is busy year-round. The park has a walking trail, fishing pier, barbecue pits and picnic tables near the river. “Chuckwagon Square” is a fenced area that includes a covered stage and dance floor, and acres of old oaks for shade with picnic tables underneath; it is an ideal place for parties, reunions and special events. Washer and horseshoe pits let friends toss a few for fun and competition. Recently, a 9-hole disc golf course was added. Outside the fence are a lighted softball field and sand volleyball pits for team play. A large playscape area open to the public free of charge, is a favorite with the

younger crowd and has tables and small barbecue pits, great for birthday parties. The covered Park Pavilion, with kitchen facilities can be rented for events during the year, such as carnivals and banquets. A rodeo arena is also on site, where the Smithville Youth Rodeo Association rides once a month. Two buildings in the park have bathroom facilities. At the entrance, a train sculpture created by artist Jeff Snyder and the folks at LPAA, welcomes you into the park. Nineteen RV hookups are available; call the Parks & Recreation Dept. at 512-237-3282, ext 7 to reserve space or to rent areas of the park for events. The park is open year-round.

Buescher State Park Located on Park Road 1-C in Smithville, Off FM 153, a half mile north of Hwy 71, is in an area known as the Lost Pines Region because of the abundance of pine trees, is on over 1,100 acres. In 1895 a legendary coin flip established the town’s name as “Smithville”. Legend has it that a Burleson and a Smith agreed to “toss” for the name, as the town had been known informally for decades as Smithville but the Burleson family had been instrumental in the town’s growth. Mr. Smith supplied the nickel. It was later discovered that it was, in fact, a double-headed nickel! Mr. Burleson is reported to have written: “I was foiled by a fickle nickel !”

The Smithville Police Department is housed in a natural stone building, which began its life as the fire station, circa 1933. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps with stone quarried for the building from a location known as “The Hill.”

September 2013 – The Texas Commission on the Arts designated Smithville as a Cultural District, one of only 24 in Texas at that time. The Cultural District was named the Richard D. Latham Cultural District.
November 2020 - A beautiful mosaic of Smithville’s own, Hannibal Lokumbe, a world-renowned trumpeter and composer was created by mosaic artist Stefani Distafano on the side of the Mosaic Art & Home building at 218 Main Street.
January 2008 – The Texas Film Commission certified Smithville as the First Certified Film Friendly Community in Texas.
Guinness World Record officially recognized “Smitty” as the World’s Largest Gingerbread Cookie weighing 1,308 lbs. 8 oz, measuring 20’ from head to toe in their 2009 edition (pg. 124).
The Smithville Veterans Memorial & Splash Park was dedicated on May 27, 2013. Among the memorial walls in the park are names of over 4,000 men & women who honorably served our country.
2020 - Smithville Mayor Scott Saunders designated Smithville a Golf Cart Friendly Community.

The City of Smithville’s golf cart ordinance allows golf carts in the city on two-lane roadways with a maximum speed of 30 miles per hour. Permits are issued to drive a golf cart in Smithville after the cart is inspected by the Smithville Police Department; golf cart drivers must be 18 years or older and must have a valid driver’s license and insurance for their golf cart. Smithville also allows golf carts from out of town with a day pass.

New Business Highlights 301 Main Street
Fat Cat Lounge One of Smithville’s newest businesses is the Fat Cat Lounge and Cafe, which features an innovative wine bar, a full menu restaurant, and a live music venue. They will showcase acts playing Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country, and everything in between. The owners, Dennis and Lori Huffman have lived here in Smithville for 8 years. Dennis is a retired teacher, who taught in Houston ISD for 30 years, while Lori worked extensively in the wine industry and as a real estate agent. She currently is a realtor for Schultz Texas Properties.
Located at 301 Main Street, on the corner of Main and the Loop, the Fat Cat Lounge is in one of Smithville’s oldest and most revered buildings. Erected in 1902, it is still the tallest building in Bastrop County and was originally the Masonic Lodge. Recently renovated for the wine bar, it now impresses with the perfect blend of the old and new. Exposed red brick and weathered hardwood floors are highlighted by chandeliers and colorful lights, giving it a unique but serene atmosphere. Because of Lori’s long and varied career in the wine industry, she is uniquely qualified to run their new bar. Lori has worked in every position from retail, to distribution, to national sales and has been one of the key judges at the Houston Rodeo International Wine Competition since it began in 2004. She brings a wealth of experience and insight to share with her patrons and countless connections in the industry. They will host an array of wine classes and dinners, starting with Guy Stout on Dec. 3rd. Guy, The Cowboy Sommelier, is the preeminent figure in the Texas wine industry and will host a wine dinner, featuring selections from his own winery and food he is preparing himself. Come by and support this new business and help Smithville further develop its entertainment and hospitality scene.

Rio Social House

Rio Social House bar and cafe is one of the many new businesses to open their doors in Smithville. The vision of owners, twin sisters, Charlotte and Carrie Keith, is to provide a gathering space for the Smithville community as well as tourists. They have specialty coffee drinks, Blue Bell ice cream, a full bar with craft brews on tap, and mocktails for the sober community. A variety of food items which will change regularly will also be available. Rio has an indoor stage for more intimate performances such as solo artists, singer-songwriters, open mic nights, spoken word or stand up as well as an outdoor stage for the bigger bands. Rio is not only a business but the building stands out as a piece of art. The 100-year-old Spanish style art deco building showed its age before the sister’s renovation. Many folks have told them they hoped somebody would do something cool with the special space. The sisters have pulled that off with features that include a flamingo mosaic scene, giant mirrored palm trees, and hand-made tile created by local artist, Stefanie Distifano. The adjacent garden is being transformed from a boring plot of grass into a tropical escape complete with a fire pit/pickers circle, sailboat water feature, and one of only 3 petanque courts located in a bar in the US.

The sisters are excited to share their dream of creating an enchanting space to socialize with friends or get some work done in a relaxing setting using their Wi-Fi, complete with USB ports to plug in and recharge. Once we have made it to the other side of the pandemic, indoor and outdoor games of all sorts for all ages will be available. But for now, enjoy their large outdoor space, perfect for passing the time during covid, with a hot toddy or hot chocolate by the fire. Festive holiday specialty drinks will be on the menu during the holiday season to warm your bones and spirit. Rio’s current hours are from 7 AM – 10 PM 7 days a week.
Carne Lenta
The Taco Flats/ La Holly restaurant/bar group has made its way to Smithville. Operating out of the old Micklethwait BBQ space, Carne Lenta is smoking meats for delicious tacos on homemade tortillas. They opened in November in the building known as the “Vasek Garage” houses Carne Lenta, which is Spanish for “slow meat”, the “garage bar”, and a butcher shop. During lunch the quick service line at Carne Lenta is serving up individual tacos and meats by the pound. At 4pm the garage bar will open its doors for happy hour, then dinner service. Sports and shuffleboard defines the space as the local hang out. On weekends Tony Olvera Pit-master/Butcher and Partner of the project takes fresh carcasses and processes them for retail consumption. The BUTCHER SHOP sells raw meats and smoked charcuterie on Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s from 11am to 5pm. Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm to 12am, the butcher shop will convert into a pre-prohibition and post-prohibition cocktail speakeasy. Space is limited. Saturdays will be their day for music. The stage looks out to their patio and toward Olive Street will host local and regional bands. They hope to be the entertainment draw for the surrounding communities. April & October) Join us for two Community-Wide Garage Sales in Smithville, Texas Find your treasures at more than 60 garage sales all over Smithville and downtown. Free maps to all shoppers at the Chamber office downtown. SMITHVILLE JAMBOREE! In Jamboree’s early days, Jamboree was held on the streets of Downtown Smithville, today known as “Main Street”. There were food vendor’s, a soda booth, street dances, jelly and jam contest, bread making, watermelon booth, chicken booth and many other events. In the later years, Jamboree was moved to its current home of Riverbend Park. Jamboree is typically the week after Easter. Check website for dates and details. page 24

Smithville Airport Fly-In (2nd Saturday in May) The skies above Smithville are buzzing with activity with the annual Airport Fly-In. The Smithville-Crawford Municipal Airport (84R) plays host to pilots and their guests that fly in for a day of fun and shopping Smithvillestyle! Area residents are also invited to explore the airport facilities, visit with pilots, browse the ex-hibits, and grab a bite to eat as well. ECO/PHOTO FEST (2nd Saturday in October) Week-Long Virtual Event Eco Fest and Photo Fest have merged into one program in 2020. Experts in photography and ecology speak on topics as diverse as light pollution to night-sky photography. Smithville Wingfest, Homebrew & Chili Cook-A-Roo (Last Saturday in September) The Annual Smithville Wingfest & Chili Cook-A-Roo in historic downtown Smithville is a great time to come out and cook up some wings, chili or home brew beer for our judges! Visit www.smithvillewingfest.com for details. Come enjoy tastings of wings and chili for People’s Choice! Wristbands are just $15 to taste all the wings and chili! Beer booth, live music all day and lots of great food vendors.
Halloween Spooktacular! (October 31st) Smithville’s littlest ghouls and goblins come downtown on Halloween for candy, train rides, ghost tours and a haunted house. Businesses hand out candy and prizes, costume contest, bounce houses, zombie walk and more at this annual event. Join us every Halloween from 5pm to 7:30pm. Airing of the Quilts & Garden Club Home Tour (2nd Saturday in November) Come out and view the beautiful quilts displayed up and down Main Street and all over town, particularly on Ramona Street. The gorgeous quilts include a variety of styles and represent many different stitching patterns and themes. Shop the vendors for supplies, materials and gifts and enjoy the shops and restaurants. Take the train to see the Garden Club Home Tour and get your home tour tickets on Main Street on the day of the event. As always, Airing of the Quilts is a free event and the home tour costs $10.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS & LIGHTED PARADE (1st Saturday in December) Every First Saturday in December Smithville Chamber of Commerce transforms Main Street into a themed winter wonderland for the Festival of Lights. The event features holiday exhibits, a kid’s area, games and fun activities along with great music, food and drinks as well as photos with Santa and indoor and outdoor markets. After dusk, the Annual Lighted Parade with Santa begins (no parade in 2020 due to COVID-19).
