The Community

Smithvillians are friendly, creative, inventive, and earnest. The City's history, charm, amenities, partnerships, and terrific school district provide everything needed for a high quality of life. Local elder statesman, Richard D. Latham, coined the phrase, “Everything is possible in Smithville!” and the Chamber works every day in this truth!

Located in central Texas on Highway 71, Smithville is 35 minutes from Austin-Bergstrom airport, 45 minutes from Austin's downtown district, one hour from San Marcos, 90 minutes from San Antonio, two hours from Houston, and three and a half hours from Dallas/Ft Worth, making Smithville very convenient to do business and to visit

Smithville boasts an airport, a recreation center, a historic downtown district with quaint shops and unique dining options, a rich railroad history, the only full service hospital in Bastrop County, some of the finest city parks anywhere, and some of the friendliest people on the planet Buescher State Park is just outside of town, and Bastrop State Park is about 10 miles down Park Road 1C. Smithville is a small town with plenty to do.

Culture and entertainment abounds in Smithville, which is perhaps best known as the home of “Hope Floats,” the 1998 movie starring Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick Jr , and Gena Rowlands It was also the primary location for “Tree of Life,” starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn, filmed in 2008. Most recently, Smithville has been home to major HBO and Netflix programs. In all, over 100 feature films, music videos, commercials, streaming series, and all other sorts of live action productions have been at home in Smithville, which received the very first Texas Film Friendly designation in 2008 In 2013, Smithville was designated a Texas Cultural District because of its thriving music, performing arts, and gallery scenes.

The village of “old Smithville” was laid out on 640 acres within Mexican Land Grants awarded to Thomas J. Gazley and to Lewis Lomas in 1827. The early settlement was located on the Colorado River in the northeast section of present day Smithville. The Taylor, Bastrop and Houston Railroad arrived in 1887, and the subsequent population boom made Smithville the largest town in the County, leading to its incorporation in 1895. Today, the City is home to about 4,000 residents, many of whom can be seen driving through town in their golf carts.

Smithville is a very special place. From the award winning Seton Ascension Hospital cafeteria to the two stage concert venue at Riverbend Park to the Workforce Training Center, Smithville embodies excellence and innovation.
