WELCOME
Good gracious! Wedding season is well and truly upon us. Since that very first issue of Smitten Magazine came about just five short months ago we have been inundated with weddings, weddings and more weddings. This suits us just fine as we can never have too many fancy frocks, beautiful blooms or stylish stationery to lust after. We’ve received countless lovely messages from oh so clever photographers, stylists, celebrants, stationery designers, planners, cake makers – you name it, we’ve heard from them. And the best part? They’re all West Aussies, right down the road from you and waiting to hear all about your dream wedding and how they can help bring it to life. We had so much fun bringing the first issue to you, and second time round was no exception. We’re constantly amazed at all the clever brides and grooms out there putting their own unique spin on their special day. We promise you’ll find heaps of inspiration from our Smitten real weddings. We’ve also got some special photo shoot collaborations from WA wedding lovelies, giving you even more ideas to add to your wedding scrapbook. Smitten aside, we personally have had more to do with weddings than ever before. Nat, as the designer at Dizzy Wizzy Design, has been a busy little bee creating invitations and all manner of lovely paper things for her brides.
4
Check out the back page for all the ways you too can be Smitten.
And while Erin may not be the creative genius Nat is, she’s done her bit by going to a wedding a month, with three more to come. One of which carries great responsibility and honour – bridesmaid at her sister's wedding. Ahem, that’s chief bridesmaid actually. We always love to hear what you think of Smitten Magazine, so please drop us a line and share your thoughts. You can reach us at info@ smittenmagazine.com.au. We think you’ll be Smitten, Nat and Erin
Don’t miss the next issue of Smitten Magazine, out September 2012. Just visit our website to sign up.

JAYNE AND BOOTS | 28 OCTOBER 2011 After becoming engaged on Christmas Day, Jayne and Boots married ten months later at Jayne’s parents' potato farm in Albany. Although the proposal may not have been the overwhelmingly romantic moment Jayne had dreamed about, the wedding certainly was. Their country wedding was filled with romance, handpicked flowers, friends and family. Boots proposed on their way to Jayne’s family Christmas breakfast. Whilst driving Boots gave Jayne a Christmas card containing a ring. Jayne burst into tears, Boots said, ‘ I assume that’s a yes then’. All without taking his eyes off the road!
If there was one thing that the happy couple could change about their wedding day it would be to have one extra groomsman. The excitement of the day became all too much for Eddie and he had to sit out the ceremony. He did make it back for photos though.

BUDGET BEAUTIFUL
Not a couple to get stressed about planning a wedding several hundred kilometres away, Jayne and Boots took off on a pre-wedding honeymoon. After travelling through Europe for over a month they returned home just four weeks before the wedding. The only thing that did stress them out a bit? Having to go on a mad exercise plan to fit into the dress and suit after indulging themselves while on holiday.

IT’S ALL IN THE PLANNING No one knows weddings quite like a wedding planner. So who better to explain exactly what these wedding professsionals can do to make your life easier, than Lara White, owner of wedding planning company White Events.

Y
ou’re engaged! What a fantastic time in your life - full of excitement and anticipation. You immediately start looking for ideas and inspiration, but then realise that the daunting task of putting together one of the biggest and most expensive parties of your life lies ahead. Excitement soon turns to panic with the thoughts “How am I going to find the time to plan a wedding?” and “Where do I even start?“ running through your head. But before you start hyperventilating, the words “wedding planner” spring to mind. For a minute there you think you might have gone crazy. But you’ll be pleased to know that it’s not a crazy notion at all. In fact it actually makes perfect sense. With most couples leading extremely busy lives and realising that the wedding planning journey doesn’t have to be a stressful one, the trend towards using the services of a wedding planner is becoming increasingly prominent. So what exactly does a wedding planner do? Essentially a wedding planner is your go-to-girl (or guy) whose main purpose is to make the lead up to your wedding stress free and finish it all off with a completely flawless wedding day. A wedding planner is your own personal mentor for everything from designing the wedding concept and outlining your budget through to finding you the perfect venue and contracting the best suppliers to suit your wedding style.
Lara White, Owner and Events Director at White Events, is one of Perth's most experienced wedding planners. Lara started her career in events management back in 1999, then in 2001 she coordinated her first wedding and knew instantly that she had found her niche. Lara has travelled Australia, managing everything from intimate events for two through to multi-million dollar events for over 1,300 guests. THE BENEFITS OF USING A WEDDING PLANNER ARE ENDLESS, BUT HERE ARE SOME OF THE BIG ONES… 1. We’ll take the PRESSURE OFF YOU. Being able to answer wedding related questions with the words “My wedding planner is taking care of that” not only puts your mind at ease, it also wards off unwanted comments and opinions. 2. We’ll SAVE you a huge amount of TIME. We take on all the groundwork for you and then present you with the options that we believe best suit your wedding, thus saving you hours of tedious online researching. 3. We’ll ensure you get VALUE FOR MONEY. Steering you towards quality suppliers who we work with regularly means they'll go out of their way to make sure you receive excellent service, added benefits and in some cases even a discount.
4. We’ll make sure you don’t overspend. Drawing on our industry knowledge of wedding costs, we will create a REALISTIC wedding BUDGET for you and allocate your money accordingly, so the areas of importance to you are maximised. We closely monitor the budget to ensure your finances are kept in order. 5. We’ll provide CONSTANT SUPPORT and be available to answer even the most trivial of questions. We will also always have your best interests at heart and as a neutral party we won’t be afraid to remind everyone that it’s your wedding and not theirs… in the nicest possible way. 6. And of course WE’LL BE THERE ON THE DAY to make sure everything runs to plan and deal with any dramas that may arise allowing you to relax and enjoy your day.
Of course, you can still plan all or some of the wedding yourself. But perhaps it’s worth considering the convenience and piece of mind of having a professional on your team. After all, your wedding is a once in a lifetime event; why not make the most of it?

PURPLE PATCH KATIE AND DAVID 16 APRIL 2011
29
WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN? “When I caught Dave’s eye when I was walking down the aisle – it made me calm and happy.”
S
ome couples can take months to find their perfect wedding venue. Katie and David knew straight away after looking at only one – Moore and Moore Café in Fremantle. Once done up with candles, fairy lights and lanterns it provided the elegant yet laid back feel they were after. The Hyde Park ceremony was beautiful in its simplicity, with the bright purple bridesmaids dresses and blooms being all the colour that was needed. As a nod to her family’s Scottish heritage Katie walked down the aisle accompanied by a piper in full costume. As Katie and David were the only ones in on this, it was a delightful surprise to Katie’s parents.
30
SWEET IDEA
Katie’s knew she didn’t want a traditional bouquet so, with her florist, decided on a knitted wire corsage of orchids worn around one wrist. This left her free to hold hands with her hubby – awwwhhh. The three bridesmaids had similar smaller corsages with the blokes all sporting a single purple orchid. Except for Katie’s dad, his boutonniere was created to match his kilt. Katie surprised herself with her choice of dress. Known for her love of all things sparkly and just a tad over the top she tried on countless glittery gowns then settled on a very simple creation. But, keeping to her style, the dress was blinged up with a pearl and crystal encrusted belt. Two of Katie’s favourite things came together in the shoes – pink and sparkles. Complete with diamonds on the soles of her shoes. Well, maybe not actual diamonds but they certainly caught the light.
31
32
CUTE IDEA
R
ather than opt for the traditional guest book Katie and David asked their friends to get inked. Guests left green fingerprints on the branches of the wedding tree.
33
After the wedding Katie and David leapt straight into their honeymoon, jetting off to the US, visiting New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco. They’ve also just bought their very own love nest together and moved in just before Christmas. Phew, what next? Katie and David had such an amazing day, shared with close friends and family, they might just do it all again next year!

Unsave the date
Dressing a bump
I SENT OUT MY SAVE THE DATE CARDS A FEW MONTHS BACK, NOW IT’S TIME TO SEND THE INVITATIONS. THERE’S A LITTLE PROBLEM THOUGH - OUR BUDGET HAS SHRUNK SOMEWHAT AND I NEED TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF GUESTS BY ABOUT 30. HOW DO I TELL PEOPLE THAT THEY NO LONGER NEED TO SAVE THE DATE?
I’M FIVE MONTHS PREGNANT AND HAVE FOUR WEDDINGS TO GO TO BEFORE BUB ARRIVES. THEY’RE ALL MY GOOD FRIENDS SO THERE WILL BE LOTS OF THE SAME PEOPLE AT EACH WEDDING. IS IT A FASHION FAUX PAS TO WEAR THE SAME DRESS TO ALL?
Oh poppet, that is a tricky one. We feel for you. But do you know what? Those people are your friends and family and they will understand the stresses and strains of a coin purse that empties itself far too fast. Just telephone or send a little note explaining the situation. After all, they wouldn’t want to see you and your beloved starting your loved-up lives together under the curse of bad credit. And if anyone bellyaches, won’t that be a nice reminder of why they got bumped?
36
Four weddings in your final trimester? Goodness gracious, you’re a brave soul. Try as you might to be a faux-pas-less fashionista, let’s face it – you’re too busy growing a person to let your gown get you down. So long as you don’t upstage the brides- and grooms-to-be by giving birth at the altar, I seriously doubt whether anyone will notice whether your frock looks familiar. Besides, they’ll be too busy rubbing your belly and banging on about how they get to drink your share of the bubbles.
You’re e-invited IS IT A TOTAL NO-NO TO EMAIL OUR WEDDING INVITATIONS? OUR WEDDING IS VERY INFORMAL AND LOW KEY, WITH ABOUT 40 GUESTS. WE HAD A WHIRLWIND ENGAGEMENT AND NOW HAVE 6 WEEKS UNTIL OUR WEDDING DATE. I’M WORRIED WE DON’T HAVE THE TIME, OR MONEY, TO GET FANCY INVITATIONS DONE. Oh pish. Next you’ll be asking if it is OK to text your wedding invitations. You will never persuade Mesdames Mitchell and Dent that there is an acceptable alternative to the delight of receiving a paper invitation delivered by post. Never. Never ever. Mind you, if we were the sway-able type, it could only be by the pretty pixels of a well-crafted e-mail campaign. We hear tell that MailChimp.com offers a jim-dandy DIY e-newsletter for nix, with complimentary monkey puns a’plenty.
Better late than never? WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE AN EIGHT WEEK HONEYMOON STRAIGHT AFTER OUR WEDDING, THEN MOVED HOUSE SOON AFTER ARRIVING HOME. IN ALL THE POST WEDDING CHAOS, I FORGOT ABOUT THE THANKYOU NOTES, WHICH I KNOW IS REALLY NAUGHTY. SHOULD I SEND THEM NOW, NEARLY SIX MONTHS AFTER THE WEDDING OR SHOULD I NOT WORRY? That all depends upon whether you want to thank people or not. Did you note the passive aggressive tone of voice used there? Did you? Did you really? Mesdames Mitchell & Dent hold in high esteem the proper practices of societal intercourse and whilst they may consider a clumsy curtsy a forgivable fault; they find ugliness in personal paperware simply unacceptable. They wantonly abandoned the hoopla and hubbub of the modern world to embrace vintage printing and believe the humble letterpressed piece of paper is universally acknowledged to be an effacious mode of delivering delightful discourse. From the most jaunty of jottings to the most ceremonial of celebratory invitations, Mitchell & Dent assert that the circulation of ephemera of note will prompt glee and giddy appreciation. 6 November 2011 VANESSA AND TIM
Vanessa and Tim exchanged vows in the picture perfect amphitheatre of Cable Beach Club, overlooking the Indian Ocean. White chairs tied with ochre ribbon reflected the clean sand and red dirt that is synonymous with WA’s north. On the day everything went exactly as the couple had dreamed and there’s not a single thing either Vanessa or Tim would change. Between them they couldn’t even find a favourite moment, with both happily saying the whole day was perfect.
39
After photos in the lush grounds of the resort Vanessa and Tim joined their guests on the verandah of the Sam Male room for sunset drinks and canapés before adjourning indoors for a seated meal. The elegant, yet simple, room was the ideal setting for the couple’s first dance as Mr and Mrs, to the song ‘Don’t Change on Me’ by Alan Jackson.

Traditional Romance MANDY AND SHANNON 1 OCTOBER 2011
45
Mandy and Shannon exchanged vows in the picturesque St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Geraldton, with their 100 guests later joining them for a seated dinner at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre. Mandy planned and styled the wedding herself, and loved every minute of it. However, she does admit to having a little help from Tinkerbell Weddings with the setting up of the reception. Mandy obviously did an amazing job as both Mandy and Shannon agree that although they kept a close eye on the purse strings the wedding day had everything they wanted, and they wouldn’t have changed anything.
46
Mandy’s matron of honor and older sister took a lot of time and care in finding the perfect something old, new, borrowed and blue items. The bride’s jewellery was old and new - Mandy’s great-grandmothers cameo earrings bought on a holiday in Rome and a new guardian angel pin similar to one worn by Mandy’s late grandmother. ‘Borrowed’ wedding rings of Mandy’s late father and grandmother were tied to her bouquet, both of whom were married in the same cathedral as Mandy and Shannon. The something blue was kept hidden from most, a blue garter.
MANDY'S COLOUR PALETTE

48
The all white table settings were simple and elegant, decorated minimally with flowers and tea light candles (and later a bottle or two of vino). They provided the ideal background to display the handmade cookies laid out at each place setting.
49
Boys will be boys… even on his wedding day Shannon, with his groomsmen, couldn’t resist a quick peek under the bonnet of one of the vintage cars used for the ceremony. Luckily everything seemed to be in order as the cars were later used to deliver the bridal party to the historic buildings and surrounds of the Bill Sewell Complex for photos then onto the Queen Elizabeth II Centre for the reception.

AMOR JANE AND TROY 24 OCTOBER 2011
T
roy proposed to Jane on Valentine’s Day in 2007 at a rose petal covered table overlooking Singapore’s Marina Bay. They were literally on cloud nine - sealing their engagement with a kiss on a helipad 70 floors up in the air.
As they were living in Singapore, they waited until their return to Australia to get married in the idyllic setting of Garvey Park, followed by a reception at Boat Shed restaurant. To ensure a wedding day that was perfect in every way imaginable they enlisted the help of Jenn Veza from the Original Wedding Company. The only thing they would’ve changed? More flowers, more candles and fireworks!
53
couple
WHAT HAD THE SMITTEN? “The part of the day that had us most truly smitten was when the world shrank down to just the two of us as we exchanged vows. We wrote our own vows and managed to memorise most of them - this was very special and it was in those moments that all the preparations were worth it.
54
Jane did the traditional thing and included something old, new, borrowed and blue in her wedding day. The something old was a bracelet of her mothers. The wedding dress was something new. Jane had an angel pin attached to her bouquet borrowed from her bridesmaid who had the same pin at her own wedding. Oops, Jane forgot the something blue – but then on such a perfect day who needs something blue?
55
56
Jane and Troy had been taking dancing lessons for months and treated their guests to a sultry Argentine Tango as their wedding waltz. The couple even had a costume change for the occasion, swapping their wedding getups for tango outfits. Their passionate dance was to ‘Asi Se Baila el Tango’ by Veronica Verdier which translates to ‘So Dance the Tango’.

57
The theme of the wedding day was fiery Latin. Red Dash Black, a Latin tango ensemble, provided the ceremony music. Then Fire n Motion awed guests with their fire performance, ending with Troy setting a heart on fire – literally!

You would think after a night of fire and tango the newly married couple would be exhausted. Add to that the emotion of saying ‘I Do’ and anyone would need a good sleep in. Not Jane and Troy. The very next day they hopped on a plane and skipped off to the Maldives to learn to scuba dive.

RETRO BLOOMS
Clothing and accessories aren’t the only lovely things enjoying the everlasting popularity of vintage. Everyone’s favourite flowers from yesteryear are making a stylish comeback too. Kiera Loan from Eufloria tells us how what’s old is definitely new again.
60
WHICH FLOWERS ARE ENJOYING A NEW FOUND POPULARITY? "Carnations and gypsophilia have definitely moved onto the popular list. Delicate sweet peas, gardenias, hydrangea, chrysanthemums and daisies are all finding a way back into wedding styling." WHY DO YOU THINK THESE FLOWERS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK? "With the trends in styling focusing on charm and old world elegance we are seeing a surge in the popularity of all our favourite old blooms, the real sweet charmers that lead to people reminiscing about their nanna’s garden. Brides (and often grooms) are choosing fresh blooms in their wedding styling that may be their grandma’s favourite or from their mother’s bouquet on her wedding day."
WHAT ARE STYLISH BRIDES DOING TO RE-INVENT THESE OLD FAVOURITES? "These beautiful old favourites are being transformed into impressive displays by massing all of one floral variety or combining a couple of varieties in a loose, eclectic style. Classic cut crystal vases filled with fluffy clouds of wispy gypsophilia; compact marshmallow balls of carnations sitting atop sleek candle sticks, boutonnieres featuring a mix of blooms and bridal bouquets featuring a sentimental bloom to represent a loved one."
WILL THE FULL RANGE OF COLOURS BE SEEN AGAIN TOO? "Growers are introducing the gorgeous old-fashioned style variegated and speckled varieties in carnations; their lush heads are looking plump and fluffy ready for a pretty posy. When sweet peas are in season we are seeing the colours of the rainbow from pretty peach to pale pink, soft grey mauve and dark velvet purples."
HERE WE GO AGAIN… THESE FLOWERS ARE JUST AS GORGEOUS THE SECOND TIME ROUND. • CARNATIONS • GYPSOPHILIA • SWEET PEAS • GARDENIAS • HYDRANGEA • DAISIES • CHRYSANTHEMUMS
61
S
tylish brides like Skye chose sweet white carnations to be teamed with classic white disbuds and delicate ivory roses for her glamorous bridal bouquet and her graceful bridesmaid wearing soft powder blue held a ball of white carnations.
photo: Daniela Fego Photography 62
WHAT WILL BE THE POPULAR FLOWER CHOICES FOR BRIDES IN 12 MONTHS TIME? "Brides are embracing the natural look in flowers and seeing their individual beauty for what they are. Posies will be filled with eclectic mixes of blooms that are meaningful to both the bride and the groom with the continual surge in old favourites as growers strive to grow unique and unusual blooms that are from a past era. Seasonal blooms will continue to be more popular than the ever- available hot house grown blooms as brides embrace the season of their special day, from daffodils and jonquils in the cooler months through to dahlias and hydrangeas in the heat of summer sun." Eufloria specialises in unique wedding flowers and stylish floral arrangements for any occasion. Pop in to see Kiera and her amazing team at Eufloria, 117c Flora Terrace North Beach or give her a call on 9448 0449. SAY ‘I DO’. LEGALLY
photo: Daniela Fego Photography
64
You’ve said ‘yes’, booked the venue and chosen the perfect dress. Forgetting something? While it is perfectly acceptable to get totally carried away in the flurry of invitations, flowers and dancing lessons you also need to ensure that all the legal stuff is in place. Ann Lord, Civil Marriage Celebrant, explains how to ensure all the legal paperwork is ship shape well before the big day. It would certainly be a waste of all your planning if the absence of a little bit of paper meant you couldn’t say ‘I do’ on the big day. In the excitement of preparing for your wedding, it’s important to understand that getting married is a lot more than just saying ‘I do’. Marriage is a legal process and there are lots of serious paperwork things that need to be done behind the scenes and on the day to make sure you really are married.
permission and a court order from a magistrate or judge must be obtained. You also can’t be closely related to one another. While Australian politicians are debating same-sex marriage as we speak, at the moment marriage must be between a man and a woman. Lastly (and surely this goes without saying), you can't be married to someone else.
In Australia you can be married by a minister of religion, by a state or territory registry officer or by an authorised civil marriage celebrant. Whether you are getting married in a church, the registry office or at the beach, the legal stuff is pretty much the same.
You’ll need to complete what’s called a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM). Leave yourself plenty of time – this document must be lodged with your chosen minister or celebrant at least one calendar month before your wedding day and not more than 18 months beforehand. Ask your minister or celebrant what to do.
First of all, you need to be 18 to marry in Australia. If one person is at least 16 (but under 18), parental

Department and fill it out, most celebrants have software and will prepare this document for you to sign at one of your meetings. You’ll need to bring along your driver’s license (or something with photo ID) and the original or extract of your birth certificate (not a photocopy). If you weren’t born in Australia, an overseas passport will be okay if you don’t have your birth certificate handy. If you’ve been married before you will also need to show some evidence that you are now free to marry. This will usually be a divorce (or death) certificate – originals please. Ideally you'll be able to complete the NOIM together but if one person is overseas or interstate until just before the wedding this may not be possible. It’s not always necessary to have all your documents at hand when you complete the NOIM but they MUST be seen by the celebrant before the wedding. But wait, there’s more! There will be a Marriage Declaration for you both to sign, usually at the last meeting with your minister or celebrant. Two witnesses (at least 18 years of age) will also need to sign the marriage certificates with you at the end of the ceremony. The minister or celebrant presents you with your certificate of marriage and then lodges all the required paperwork with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Perth (if you were married in Western Australia). If you are changing your name, the certificate of marriage you receive from your minister or celebrant should be shown as evidence of marriage. Passports Australia and some other agencies will need to see the registered copy of your marriage certificate to process a change of name. A copy of this certificate is available from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Some situations are more complex than others and it’s important to discuss individual circumstances with your chosen minister or celebrant. Getting the paperwork ‘nailed’ early on means you can relax and focus on creating the ceremony of your dreams.
