W

hen photographer Jen Huang visited Bunker Bay in February she gave one lucky couple a great pre-wedding gift, a styled photo shoot. Sian and Ross were dreaming of an elegant waterside wedding and together with Ms Polka Dot created an inspiration board for their wedding. The inspiration board paid homage to the couple’s love of elegance, Ross’ rowing background, their black and white colour scheme and their dream of a cheese table at their wedding. All this against the stunning backdrop of Bunker Bay, in the Margaret River wine region.

Zinnia Floral Design styled the photo shoot under the watchful eye of Cathrin D’Entremont who coordinated the day.

Floral IDEAS

TIPS FROM NATALIE WOODS AT ZINNIA FLORAL DESIGN • Try to incorporate foliages and blooms that are growing in the surrounding area of your ceremony/reception, it helps with flow and if it is growing naturally then its a sure sign that it works well with the setting. (The wreath was handmade on site by picking from the bush on the property) • Choose colours and styles rather than particular flower types. • Bring originality to your day with gorgeous handmade floral accents

A STYLE NOTE FROM CATHRIN D’ENTREMONT WEDDINGS: "Every landscape has its elements. Bunker Bay has beautiful beaches surrounded by native flora typical to Western Australia. We kept everything very simple and only incorporating colours found in the surroundings. Sian’s dress was simple yet elegant, so perfect for the beach especially when the sea breeze played with the skirt. The couple loved cheese, so we incorporated a cheese table which is now quite popular. So perfect for the Margaret River wine region. Simple natural stationery with the calligraphy adding the elegant touch. Stationery has a huge impact on the theme of a wedding. Beautiful style shoots and weddings are only successful by having good communications between all vendors. Its team work as everyone presents a link in the event. Stay true to your own taste – keep it simple; incorporate your personality and your wedding will unfold as beautiful as you had imagined it."

A sweet tradition Too many sweet treats are never enough... and the popularity of dessert bars at weddings shows that West Aussie brides are very sweet indeed. Or is it the groom? Let your imagination be your only limit - try cupcakes, macaroons, lollies, icecream, whatever your sweet tooth desires. If sweets aren't your thing, or you just want a bit of variety, perhaps a cheese buffet is more to your liking. THE FLOWERS NATALIE, ZINNIA FLORAL DESIGN When given total freedom for an inspired shoot, I try to choose unusual materials and blooms that I love and that perhaps brides don't think to ask for because they haven't seen them well used. This bouquet was unstructured, a little playful, yet still very elegant and stylish to work with the dress. The flowers used were hippeastrum, roses, stephanotis and andromeda. This bouquet has since been incredibly popular for those brides wanting something a little different due to its unstructured look and material choice. WWW.ZINNIAFLORALDESIGNS.COM.AU

REAL WEDDING

JOSIE AND SCOTT APRIL 2012 Although residing in a small country town in the wheatbelt, Scott proposed to Josie in Langkawi, Malaysia on their seven year anniversary. After waiting so long to get engaged Josie wasted no time in actually getting married, and just under six months later they walked down the aisle, in the picturesque surrounds of the heritage listed Bishops Garden. Although eventually arriving at the gardens in plenty of time, actually getting there was all a bit of a rush. With the flower girl getting last minute touch ups to her hair and the bridesmaids trying to tie their dresses, the bride was left to fend for herself when frocking up.

Josie's sister & Smitten editor Erin

22

What had the bride smitten? “When I reached Scott at the top of the aisle he did not stop talking! He offered me a lollypop, as he had given the flower girl one. He asked what I thought about the suits, he looked me up and down and said he loved the dress, he checked out my hair – everything. I think he was a little nervous! Then he choked up saying our personal vows.”

J

osie walked down the aisle to the John Paul Young classic, "Love is in the Air" on the arm of her dad, lead by a flowergirl and her three bridesmaids in slate floor length gowns, each tied in a similar but different way. Then she left as Mrs Thomson to the tune of "Feels So Close" by Calvin Harris while guests blew bubbles.

SOMETHING

Josie wore a Tiffany & Co bracelet, a gift from Scott four years ago, as her something old while her something new was her silk tulle Lisa Ho gown, accessorised with a silk satin ribbon belt. Luckily Josie’s something borrowed was a lace hanky from her mum, which dabbed the plentiful tears of the bride and all the bridesmaids during the ceremony. Not to be left out, her dad supplied the something blue with his tie.

GUESTS 'FURBABY' CAME GEORGE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY

24

Josie is happy to admit to having control freak tendencies, so she knew exactly how she wanted the ceremony and reception to look. Josie meticulously organised every detail then had the help of The Original Wedding Company to coordinate the details and style the venues on the day. Happy bride = happy everyone! In the days before the wedding, Josie and her mother in law made 200 mini vanilla cupcakes covered with passionfruit icing. The cake, topped with Lego figurines of the bride and groom with their beloved dog George, shared a table with wedding photos of the couple’s parents and grandparents.

25

After the stresses of organising a wedding in six short months, Josie and Scott deserved a relaxing honeymoon, and they got just that with five blissful nights at Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa in Broome. There they filled their days with strenuous activities such as yoga, massages and cocktails or just lounging in their poolside villa.

REAL WEDDING

LOUISE AND ROB | MAY 2012

Nine News weekend presenter Louise Momber and journalist Rob Scott celebrated their wedding in beautiful Mosman Bay, the same location of his romantic riverside proposal just 10 months earlier. The setting, with stunning views across the Swan River had become a favourite spot to muse for the couple who had met at a media conference five years ago. And it was on a chilly Sunday morning after eating out for breakfast that their adored riverside setting would acquire a new significance for the couple. Romantic Rob insisted they stop by the bay on the way home but Louise was not too enthusiastic about his idea! Thankfully Rob’s charming ways won her over and they sat chatting as they usually would. However, the cool weather saw Louise keen to seek shelter and it was at this moment that she looked back to see if Rob was also making his way to the car. To Louise’s surprise she saw Rob down on bended knee holding out a beautiful engagement ring!

he couple exchanged vows at Holy Rosary Church in Nedlands. The traditional ceremony was perfect and Louise treasures the moment of walking down the aisle to greet her handsome husband-to-be with her Dad by her side.

29

What had the bride smitten?

“The warmth and light at our reception… Rob and I wanted the room full of twinkly lights and candles, with lots of flowers to create a sense of a romance. When we arrived at Mosmans Restaurant, we were so ‘smitten’ to see it was exactly as we’d hoped and it created such a gorgeous atmosphere for the evening.”

THE ROOM WAS FILLED WITH PRETTY FLOWERS

First dance as Mr & Mrs

T

he romantic riverside backdrop provided the ideal setting for the couple’s first dance as ‘Mr and Mrs Scott’ to the song, “Time of my Life” by David Cook and an unforgettable wedding day dance with her Dad was also a very special moment for Louise. 120 guests joined the bride and groom for a seated dinner reception at the picturesque, riverside Mosmans Restaurant - a fitting location for them to celebrate their nuptials with all their favourite people. Rebecca Grace’s styling created an overwhelming sense of romance and a perfect ambience and warmth in the room, exactly as Louise and Rob had hoped. With a gorgeous wine list, divine fare, memorable speeches and lots of dancing - the entire celebration was the perfect day for the couple. The couple’s bridal party was Louise’s sister as Maid of Honour, her niece as flower girl and they both asked their three best friends to be the groomsmen and bridesmaids. Louise’s classic gown was complimented by the bridesmaid’s romance red dresses.

WHAT TO DO? Ahhh, weddings. Everyone always has a good time once its underway but it’s the months of planning that can often undo even the most pulled together bride.

Well, now you can relax a little as Mesdames Mitchell and Dent come to the rescue, helping making the daunting world of wedding etiquette just a tad less confusing for brides, grooms and guests.

Hostess with the mostess Q: MY FIANCÉ’S FAMILY WILL ALL BE TRAVELLING FROM OVERSEAS FOR OUR WEDDING. SO FAR, THEY’VE ASKED ME TO ORGANISE THEIR ACCOMMODATION, HIRE CARS, COLLECT THEM FROM THE AIRPORT AT ALL HOURS OF THE DAY AND ARRANGE TOURISTY THINGS FOR THEM TO DO. I’M ALREADY A BIT STRESSED WITH PLANNING THE ACTUAL WEDDING, SURELY I DON’T HAVE TO PLAY HOSTESS TO ALL THESE PEOPLE TOO? A: Are you asking if you need to be kind to your new family on their first visit to your country – a faraway country that their son will wed in, live in and raise their grandchildren in? You might be his new life, but consider how they may be feeling about the end of his old life at home with them. So we say yes, you do need to play the welcoming hostess to his family. For the rest of your life. In good times and bad. In sickness and in health. Till death do you part.

33

Let them eat cake

Just water thanks

Q: IT’S A BIT OF A TRADITION IN MY FAMILY FOR GRAN TO MAKE HER FAMOUS FRUITCAKE FOR ALL BIG OCCASIONS, INCLUDING WEDDINGS. SHE’S ALREADY TOLD ME HOW EXCITED SHE IS TO BE MAKING ONE FOR MY WEDDING. I HATE FRUITCAKE!! HOW DO I TELL HER I’VE ALREADY ORDERED WHITE CHOCOLATE MUDCAKE?

Q: I’VE ASKED MY BEST FRIEND TO BE MY MAID OF HONOUR, AND I’M THRILLED THAT SHE’LL BE SUPPORTING ME THROUGH THE PLANNING AND WEDDING DAY. THE ONLY THING IS… SHE REALLY LIKES TO PARTY AND DOESN’T MIND HAVING A DRINK OR TWO. TO BE HONEST, I’M REALLY WORRIED THAT SHE’S GOING TO TOTALLY EMBARRASS ME (AND HERSELF) BY DOING SOMETHING STUPID. CAN I ASK HER TO NOT DRINK?

A: Traditions are important at weddings. Like carrying flowers (traditionally used to mask the smell of the stinky bride in times when bathing wasn’t quite so important), wearing white (inspired by Queen Victoria’s cheap ass choice showing she wasn’t a spendthrift of the people’s purse – old lace and un-dyed fabric being far more economical than rich red and purple silks) and being pelted with rice (symbolising the congregation’s desire that the couple go forth and have many children in order to toil the land for the success of the village). In fact, wedding cakes made of dried fruit and blended with wine symbolised longevity in an unrefrigerated era when it was considered lucky if the top layer was able to be eaten on the first anniversary, and unlucky if it wasn’t. So, go on, let Gran make her famous lucky fruitcake. The way you’re talking, anyone would think the cake was for eating.

The more the merrier Q: WE’RE INVITING QUITE A FEW FAMILIES TO OUR WEDDING, WITH KIDS AGED FROM THREE TO 16 YEARS. SHOULD WE SEND EACH OF THE KIDS THEIR OWN INVITATION OR IS IT OK TO INCLUDE THEM ON THEIR PARENT’S INVITATION? A: Like letterboxes, telephone directories and census forms; Madame Mitchell’s belief is that the ‘one per household’ practice is protocol in these circumstances. Issue independent children with an invitation of their own and include dependent children on the same invitation as their parents. And as Madame Dent points out, we all know how well children behave when they’re dressed up and demanded to stay still, sit pretty and pleaseoh-please hush up. You’ll love them being there. Little darlings.

A: Without singling out the maid of honour, it is entirely appropriate to sit the whole bridal party down and have a little chat about the etiquette of the event, kindly requesting they stay off the giggle juice until the important doings are all done. The temptation to take a wee tipple of ‘Nerve Cliquot’ throughout the day is easily understood, but our advice is to provide a dry alternative. Iced tea, anyone? After the speeches (with the added bonus of diverting a drunken best man from telling tales of tawdriness in his speech), treat your bridal party to a special signature cocktail all of their own and invite them to cut up the rug ‘til dawn.

Mesdames Mitchell & Dent hold in high esteem the proper practices of societal intercourse and whilst they may consider a clumsy curtsy a forgivable fault; they find ugliness in personal paperware simply unacceptable. They wantonly abandoned the hoopla and hubbub of the modern world to embrace vintage printing and believe the humble letterpressed piece of paper is universally acknowledged to be an effacious mode of delivering delightful discourse. From the most jaunty of jottings to the most ceremonial of celebratory invitations, Mitchell & Dent assert that the circulation of ephemera of note will prompt glee and giddy appreciation.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS ANN AND RICHARD | NOVEMBER 2011 After 17 years in hospitality, with many of those as a wedding planner, Ann has witnessed her fair share of weddings so she knew exactly what she did and didn’t want for her own nuptials. During that time she was lucky enough to become firm friends with some of the most talented wedding people WA has to offer. Her dress was created by a former WA Ballet Company costume designer, catering was by two well known professional chefs and the bride and bridesmaids’ headpieces were by a local milliner who has worked with celebrities such as Elton John.

Ann and Richard did theirs a little differently to most, as they explained, we wanted to be “free to enjoy the greatest night of our lives.” The cake was cut just after the ceremony, the bouquet was thrown from the couple’s garage roof after Ann scaled a ladder in full wedding attire then guests enjoyed the one and only speech.

nn was very hands on in creating her wedding day – she arranged the roses in the bouquets, made the bunting and paper windmills, created the invitations in the form of an interactive flash presentation and held the wedding reception at her home. Although this wedding was far from the traditional (if there is such a thing anymore!) Ann still had something old, new, borrowed and blue – her shoes, her dress, her mother’s diamond earrings and a sash and headpiece feathers. Ann and Richard enjoyed a romance filled two week honeymoon in Vietnam and Cambodia. So romantic in fact, that they now have a little bundle of joy on the way. Congratulations!

A dream come true DANNIELLE AND ANTHONY | APRIL 2012

Anthony had the perfect proposal planned for Dannielle – while holidaying in Sydney take her skydiving for her birthday and pop the question. But mother nature interferred and bad weather meant the skydive was cancelled. Not to be deterred, Anthony patiently waited for the next opportunity, which luckily wasn’t too long at all. While still in Sydney, Dannielle and Anthony did a night climb up the Sydney Harbour Bridge. At the top, overlooking the twinkling lights of the city, Anthony got down on bended knee and asked Dannielle to marry him. Ohhh, how romantic.

Photos: Samantha House of Photography

41

Just eight months after becoming engaged, Dannielle and Anthony tied the knot in the John XXIII College Chapel in front of 140 of their friends and family. After photos at the college, City Beach and the grounds of UWA they joined their guests at the University Club for a dinner and dancing. Dannielle followed tradition and was a bride with something old, new, borrowed and blue. Her something old was a blue sapphire ring from her gran, which also took care of the something blue. She borrowed earrings and the new was her Donna Tobin wedding gown.

42

“When I first saw my husband to be at the end of the aisle and our first kiss as husband and wife.” WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN?

43

There was never any doubt in Dannielle’s mind as to what her first dance as Mrs Walter would be. She choose her favourite song from one of her favourite movies - “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Dannielle organised her wedding day herself, with some help from friends in the wedding industry. She couldn’t have been more thrilled with her wedding day and wouldn’t change a single thing, “…everything was perfect. It was everything I dreamed it to be.” This active couple were never going to slow down after becoming husband and wife. They jetted straight off to Phuket for a two week honeymoon and are now in training for the Melbourne Marathon in October.

MAKE ME UP

46

Makeup is yet another of those seemingly never-ending decisions you’ll need to make when planning your nupitals ensuring it compliments your dress, hair and the overall look and feel of your wedding. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, Jeannette Preston of JPreston Makeup gives an insight into what’s currently happening in the world of wedding makeup.

STYLES FOR TODAY'S BRIDE TRADITIONAL Overall a very natural look which is great for people who don’t normally wear a lot of make-up but would like to add a touch of glamour on their special day. Highlighted eyes, dewy radiant skin with nude or soft pink lips. Eye shadow is neutral with a trio or quad of colours from the same family, the darker shade is applied on the outer corners of the eyelid and blended inwards towards the inner corner of the eye. The look is finished with a little eye-liner, black mascara, natural-looking false eyelashes and groomed eyebrows. VINTAGE HOLLYWOOD A very popular look at the moment consisting of red lipstick, neutral eye shadow and eye liner or “winged” eyeliner. This timeless and glamorous look is perfect for brides who simply adore red lips and vintage. SMOKY EYE Ideal for brides who want statement eyes and something more than their everyday style. For a more glamorous look and sultry eyes, darker eye shadow colours are used, blended really well. Dark brown or black eye liner lines the inner rim of the eye, unless the eye is very small then a butter coloured eye liner should be used. Mascara and false eye lashes finish the look. Barely there lips and cheeks are essential. NATURAL EYES AND BOLD LIPS Again, this is a great look for chic brides. It’s fun and pretty. You can choose to wear eye-shadows in colours that are very close to your skin tone. Just a bit of depth at the crease with a light brown eye-shadow. No eye liner or false eye lashes and just a little mascara. Butter coloured eye liner should be used on the inner rim of the eye. Make lips pop in any bold colour that is trending during the season you are getting married in. “NO MAKE-UP” MAKE-UP Perfect for girls who usually wear very little or no make-up but want to look fabulous on their wedding day. Eyes are similar to those in the Natural Eyes and Bold Lips look, but nude lips or pink lip-gloss in shades to suit the bride’s skin tone is added instead.

keep these amazing tips to yourself. Here’s some tricks the professionals don’t want you to know. • Work with thin layers. For the make-up to last, you need to be able to work it into the skin applying thin layers of product. • Use a liquid blusher after liquid foundation. Set your make-up with face powder and then apply powder blusher in the same tone as the liquid one – it won’t move for ages. • Wear false eye lashes, even if just individual ones, as they photograph extremely well and bring definition to your eyes. • Waterproof it all. Use waterproof products, especially mascara. You will be glad you did. • When too shiny or sweaty, blot your face - don’t wipe it all off with the blotting papers before touching-up. Just pat, then powder.

Choosing a makeup artist Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the person who’ll make you look extra gorgeous on your wedding day. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A MAKE-UP ARTIST: • Find a make-up artist with great skills, plenty of experience and great training as these are all signs of a great and confident artist. Make sure you love his/her work. If your make-up artists’ work has an impact on you, he/she probably is the right one for you. If he/she has a reputable name, you can’t go wrong.

• Make sure your make-up artist is someone who responds to your brief if you provide them with one. You need someone who is a good listener. • Find someone who will make you feel at ease, has a nice personality and will allow you to be stress-free on your wedding day. KELLY & JOEL | MAY 2012 Kelly and Joel’s wedding day was a true celebration of the important role family and friends play in their lives. Although the couple did all the planning and organising themselves, Kelly happily gives credit to their many helpers; “We did it ourselves with lots of love and support from our families. Contractors and friends who work with my family’s business also contributed in transporting and arranging furniture and equipment and setting up the amphitheatre and reception hall for us.” The day was filled to the brim with handcrafted touches that Kelly and Joel’s family and friends helped create. To name just a few - many bottles of sparkling water were drunk to provide vases, and labels were painstakingly removed; tables were made by Joel and Kelly’s dad; Joel was ably assisted by his brother cousin and Kelly’s brother in organising the music for the reception and ceremony.

51

When Joel decided that Kelly was The One he planned a proposal an entire evening long. He asked Kelly to marry him on top of Monument Hill in Fremantle, she said yes of course and they popped the celebratory champagne. Joel then whisked Kelly off to the North Mole for more drinks overlooking the ocean, then onto Harvest in North Fremantle for a degustation feast, then to his new fiance’s parents place for more celebrations. In Kelly’s words, “It was amazing! I’m a lucky girl.” Kelly took care of her something old and new in the traditional way – a birthday necklace from Joel being the something old and a wedding day gift of a white hanky from Joel’s grandparents as the something new.

WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN? “My groom. And our venue. It was very us. It felt quite casual but deep with amazing history and a beautiful ambience. It provided everything, meaning that no-one had to travel anywhere, with the ceremony, drinks, photographs and reception all in the one spot. We were able to decorate the hall at the back of the block [the original church] to our own taste and the church were kind enough to allow us to use our selected caterer too.

DIY LOLLYBAGS

T

he borrowed and blue were something a bit different – the borrowed was some decorative doilies from her Oma and Grandma plus Kelly says she also borrowed “all of our family and friends energy, love and time for the day.” The something blue was her shoes. Plus a unique idea; Kelly asked all her friends who came to her hens party to bring five white and five blue buttons, she then sewed some to her hairpiece and used the others in the reception decorations. Kelly and Joel have got plenty planned to keep them busy after the wedding. They’re renovating their house, extending their family (although their two cats may not be too happy about the planned addition of a dog!) and taking off to Melbourne to enjoy a bit of a honeymoon and a good catch up with friends and family.

Place of Love MEET THE WINNER OF OUR SPRING COVER BRIDE COMPETITION…

CHEY AND DEAN | FEBRUARY 2012 There was only ever one place for Chey and Dean to tie the knot. With Dean’s love of surfing and great food and Chey’s love of the beach and wineries it had to be somewhere in the Margaret River area. They decided on Yallingup, with the ceremony on the white sands of Bunker Bay beach followed by the reception at Aravina Estate winery. Their chosen location couldn’t have been more fitting, with the couple later discovering that Yallingup is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘Place of Love’. photos: Yoram Conradt Photography

57

On the morning of the wedding Chey and her bridesmaids quickly put together the bride’s traditional something old, new, borrowed and blue. Old was a vintage glass bell sent from Chey’s Nan in Sydney. New was her Mariana Hardwick dress. The something borrowed was some makeup from a bridesmaid and they decided that the sparkling ocean was perfect for the something blue.

58

Chey's

COLOUR PALETTE

After months of meticulous planning Chey and Dean knew they had all the details covered, and were completely prepared for their wedding day. The day began with a 6am wake up call for the girls, where Chey presented her bridemaids with kimonos in which to get their hair and makeup done and to sip champagne. The boys, not needing quite so much time for hair and makeup, went for a surf at nearby Dunsborough. There, the groom ran over his brother (one of his groomsmen) in the surf and cut his heel open with his fin. Thinking he needed sticthes, the boys rushed over to Chey, a nurse, who bandaged his heel and reassured him that he would be fine and the stitches could wait until the following day.

59

Chey and Dean organised and planned their wedding themselves, and although Chey admits that, “the list was very long, and sometimes felt endless” she couldn’t have been more thrilled with how everything came together. On the day, they had some help from Kate at Zest Styling with the ceremony set up, leaving the couple, their friends and family free to enjoy the day. Chey’s mum then did a quick dash from the ceremony to the reception to ensure the venue was as it should be. She styled the room with decorations that Chey, Dean and herself had either sourced or made themselves. The beach ceremony was overflowing with personal touches – guests were kept comfortable in the hot weather with while silk fans, white parasols, white thongs and brushes to help them de-sand their feet. When Chey and Dean walked back down the aisle as husband and wife they were covered with white rose petals thrown by guests from handmade petal cones. Guests were also included in the couple’s nupitals by participating in a ring warming ceremony. Chey and a friend made the ring cushion and attached the wedding bands. Guests passed the cushion around and as they held the rings, the celebrant asked them to take a moment to warmly wish Chey and Dean happiness for their wedding day and their future together.

60

61

Not content with the usual paper and pen style guest book, this beach loving couple had a surfboard handcrafted in solid wood. Guests were invited to write their message in pencil around the edges of the board; these messages were then burnt into the board after the wedding. With the board taking pride of place in their hallway, Chey and Dean see these messages of love from their friends and family everyday. After the wedding, the new Mr and Mrs returned home, only to take off again for two weeks in Hawaii for more surf, food and beaches. Upon their return Chey leapt straight into her next adventure. In Chey’s words, she combined her “passion for food, wine, fashion, flowers, interior design, lovely paper products and a knack for beautiful handmade touches” and started up a boutique wedding hire and style company with her mum. Aisle Style was launched in February 2012 check it out at www.aislestyle.co

62

WHAT HAD THE COUPLE SMITTEN? “Our favourite part of the day was actually the very end of the night. We had organised a “sparkler sendoff.” All guests were given an extra long ‘wedding’ sparkler to wave at us as we said our goodbyes and made our exit through a guard of honour. It was very emotional to see all of our family and friends lighting their sparklers, having a ball and knowing that the day and night had finally come to a close. It was the best $200 we spent!”

COUNTRY VINTAGE SELENA AND BEN OCTOBER 2011

From the moment they were engaged, Ben and Selena knew exactly where they would marry - Ben’s parents farm “Yandanjerry” in West Toodyay, one of the couple’s most favourite places. With the couple so much in love with the farm they wanted their guests to love it too. The ceremony was held in a paddock on the property with an abundance of flowers, vintage furniture and even a corrugated-iron clad bathroom. A garden party atmosphere was created, with many little areas for guests to relax and enjoy the peaceful surrounds.

65

66

WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN? “There are several. The car ride with my Dad to the ceremony. Seeing my hubby’s face when I walked towards him amongst our family and friends. Then our first dance - just how we dance for fun at home spinning and dipping! And his speech at the close of the night.”

Being a creative sort Selena created all the exquisite little touches herself – flowers, furniture, signage, decorations, everything. She admits it was a lot of work and knows she drove her family crazy with her ‘visions’. But it was all well worth it with a happy bride and happy guests.

67

The lavish 1920s themed reception was held in the historic Toodyay Hall. In keeping with the art deco style of the building each table was uniquely decorated with crystal and bronze vases, candelabras, vintage light shades and flocked velvet runners.

SPINNING AND DIPPING

68

The bride’s dress was a simple but elegant Caleche Bridal gown with the embellishments and hairpiece adding a perfectly vintage touch. Each bridesmaid’s dress was lovingly customised by the girls themselves with handstitched vintage applique.

69

While Selena didn’t have the traditional old, new, borrowed and blue she had her own family tradition – a piece of tartan ribbon that has been tied to every bride’s bouquet in her family for nearly a century. Somehow it went missing just before the ceremony. Selena was absolutely distraught… until it was found in her son’s gumboot the next morning.

Creating her own wedding flowers gave Selena the inspiration she needed to follow her dream of starting up her own floral design business, “Event Flowers”. Ben followed suit and started up his own drafting business soon after. So, two new businesses and their son Jesse has kept this newly married couple pretty darn busy.

70

A member of the Toodyay Vintage Car Club drove the happy couple from the ceremony to the reception in his royal blue 1929 Chevrolet, even donning top hat and tails for the big occasion.

Laura and Rob | March 2012

REAL WEDDING

Laura and Rob said “I do in the intimate setting of the Sunken Gardens at UWA. The bride walked down the aisle to the classical sounds of Zaffiro Quartet, along a red carpet strewn with handmade paper flowers. But the flowers were just the beginning of the amazing handmade touches.

photos: Third Eye Photography

73

LAURA'S COLOUR PALETTE The flowergirls wore dresses sewn by the bride’s mother and carried pinwheels crafted by the bride. All bouquets were designed and made by the bride, as were the hearts and pom poms decorating the gardens. Bella, the bride’s dog and honourary bridesmaid wore a ruffled neckpiece. At the reception guests were treated to a personal flipbook of the couple’s journey of love. The bride also gave each of the bridal party a personalised beer mug. If there’s ever an occasion to buy new shoes, it’s a wedding, and Laura had three pairs to get her through the day. A traditional white pair with blue rosettes for the ceremony; a colourful pair of sandals just for fun and white Dunlop Volleys for comfort. Laura shared her love of shoes with her four bridesmaids by presenting them with their own pair of Dunlops in colours matched to their yellow, pink, green and blue dresses.

Laura had cufflinks made for Rob - one with a map of Perth, where they met and one with a map of Gerona, Spain where Rob proposed. And something to calm the nerves, a hip flask in his favourite colour … hot pink!

74

75

L

aura asked her best friend to be made of honour, and two very close friends and Rob’s sister to be her bridesmaids. Rob’s brother stood by him as best man plus three good mates as groomsmen. Completing the bridal party were Laura’s two cousins as the most adorable little florwergirls (Editor’s note: I have to admit that I’m a bit biased, the littlest one was my four year old daughter) In a throwback to their university party days, where Laura and Rob actually met, Wild Knights Bus Service ferried the bride and groom and bridal party from the Sunken Gardens to the photo locations of Kings Park pine forest and Perth’s Grand Lane.

76

WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN? “After the ceremony Rob gave me a 0th Anniversary card (which was actually a 50th anniversary card, but he crossed out the 5 on it, genius!). It was so sweet, and with it was a heart shaped locket with pictures of us inside it. All the guests had left and we were still in the sunken gardens. It was a beautiful, quiet, still moment and it’s something I will remember forever.”

A JOURNEY BEGINS‌ Photos: Teneil Kable

Claire and Dan | November 2011 On a rainy weekend down south in October 2010, Dan stole Claire away from their group of friends, took her to Leeuwin Estate for lunch, got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. One year later they returned to the Margaret River wine region and married at Knotting Hill Estate in the presence of 130 of their nearest and dearest. Dan’s family has a farm in the area so the region has extra significance for the couple, so Claire and Dan always knew they wanted to have a destination wedding. They are delighted with their wedding memories and are so glad they stuck with a destination wedding, despite the extra anxieties they can bring.

79

WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN? “I was so nervous before the ceremony and my stomach sounded like it had butterflies made from cement flying around inside it and all I wanted to do was hold Dan’s hand but we weren’t allowed to until after we’d exchanged rings. So that was the best when we could hold hands and have a cheeky kiss!”

80

Time flies when you’re having fun, and never more so than on your wedding day. If Claire could have her wedding day again, she’d ask for more time – more time to enjoy the yummy food and ‘cheese’ cake, and more time to dance. DAN'S WEDDING GIFT TO CLAIRE

81

CLAIRE’S COLOUR PALETTE

Claire and her bridesmaids made the ‘cheese’ cake on the morning of the wedding with a selection of local cheeses. The cake was the cause of the only real mishap on the day – it toppled over on the way to the reception but was ably remade by Claire’s mum. Claire's love of navy was the inspiration for much of the wedding styling – her shoes, the bridesmaids dresses, the groom's tie, the trim on the cake and many of the decorations.

82

Claire and Dan happened upon the ‘Our Journey Begins…’ theme for their wedding through their shared love of travel. The invitations were a fold out map with games to entertain guests on the drive down. And on the way home, their guests listened to the gift of a mixed CD compiled by the couple.

TREASURED TRADITIONS

Jelena and David | April 2012

85

M

ost weddings follow a similar format – the formalities of the ceremony then the party at the reception. Not Jelena and David’s. They started their day with a pre-wedding party at Jelena’s parents’ house, complete with eating, drinking and plenty of dancing. Their priest even joined the party. Then David arrived to present Jelena with her bouquet, as is tradition for Croatian weddings. Guests then walked around the corner to the Holy Rosary Church in Nedlands, while David and Jelena drove themselves in a convertible jaguar. The reception was held at the Nedlands Yacht Club, keeping the day local and making the transport so much easier for those who had travelled from interstate and overseas, which was about half the guests.

86

WHAT HAD THE BRIDE SMITTEN? "My gorgeous husband! Seeing him so happy really made my day, and I'm ever so lucky to have found someone as gorgeous, generous and caring as he is."

MR&MRS

87

BRIDESMAID'S BOUQUETS A BURST OF COLOUR

88

The wedding cake was made by the groom’s mum with another twenty platters of sweet treats lovingly made by their Croatian family and friends in the few days before the wedding. And as most of these people had traveled from their home country, they all crowded into the bride’s mum’s kitchen to cook. Jelena had given her bridesmaids free rein in choosing their dresses, she was so relaxed and trusting she hadn’t even seen all the dresses together until they got dressed on the day! Luckily they all worked together perfectly. A CROATIAN TRADITION

Jelena and David added heaps of little handmade touches to their wedding – confetti cones, strings of paper circle decorations, table of family photos, all the stationery except the invitations plus more. They also created their own spin on a Croatian wedding tradition; instead of handing out sprigs of rosemary for guests to pin to their clothing they attached the herb to personalised napkins.

89

Jelena and David have so many fond memories of the day, they both stuggle to choose a favourite. They know it sounds cliched but, “it really was the best day of our lives, and it makes us smile every time we think about the day.

TAKE A PHOTO... IT LASTS LONGER

Photos: CJ Williams Photography

Choosing how to capture the memories from your wedding day is one of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make. You want candid photos that capture all the emotion of the day plus some of the details you’ve spent so many months planning – cake, decorations, dress, flowers, the list goes on. Carly Williams of CJ Williams Photography shares her experience as a wedding photographer with some tips to help make the process easier while Nerissa Richardson of Vintage Photobooths tells us about something exciting and relatively new in the world of wedding photography.

WHY A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER? Hiring a professional photographer is for peace-of-mind. Your wedding is such an important and special day. A lot of time and effort is put into making your day personal and beautiful so you want to make sure you are able to remember everything for many years. You can let your day unfold and be confident that your special moments will be captured in the way they deserve.

92

CHOOSING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER It’s very easy for a photographer to show you their ‘best’ photos and you certainly want to see these but, if possible, ask to see their shots from an entire wedding. That way, you can get an idea of what you can expect to receive from your wedding day. Viewing an entire wedding worth of photos will also give you a good indication of their style and quality. You want to make sure that it matches your personal style and the style of your wedding. As the photographer will be capturing moments full of intimacy and emotion its great if you all get along and are able to communicate well. This is also useful for when the photographer has to quickly direct large groups for those family photos!

THE PERFECT SHOT A lot people can get a bit nervous in front of a camera, but with a few simple tips its easy to get the perfect photo. Candid photos can be incredibly beautiful, and will often be amongst your most favourite. Give your photographer the opportunity to capture these moments by being aware of where they are standing. If you see them snapping in the corner of your eye, don’t instantly look at the camera and smile. They will usually tell you when to look into the camera so just act natural and continue what you are doing. When choosing a location for your bridal shoot, keep an open mind. Listen to your photographer because weather, quality of light, and crowds in public places vary from day to day. With so many factors influencing the quality of your photos it’s best to be prepared and have a Plan B. Also, sometimes the best places for photos are ones you may not even have considered.

GET ENGAGED Lots of couples nowadays are choosing to have an engagement shoot. It’s a chance to have some portraits taken without the added stress of your wedding day, and great for getting to know your photographer. They can be as styled or as natural as you like and make great additions to your invites, wedding album or gift table. Remember, your photographer wants your pictures to be as beautiful as possible, so trust them. There’s no need to over-plan your wedding photos, let the day unfold and your moments will come naturally.

93

For something totally different, and a fun companion to a professional photographer, you could try a photobooth. Pile your friends in to the booth, press the button and get instant happy snaps – a great reminder of your special day. Nerissa Richardson from Vintage Photobooths explains how it all works.

WHY A PHOTOBOOTH?

WHICH PHOTOBOOTH?

Photobooths provide great entertainment at your reception while giving you and your guests instant tangible memories of the day. Once guests are in the photobooth, they tend to go a bit silly as no one else can see what’s happening behind the curtain. A series of photos are then taken so while you’re having a giggle at the first the camera is about to click for the second. They’re then printed, ready for you to take with you.

Like most things, it pays to do your research as all photobooths vary in what they offer. Photobooths in Perth generally fit about four people at a time, with some able to squeeze in up to 10. Levels of service differ too, you want to make sure there’s someone on hand to help you out, someone to check picture quality, give you pointers for a great photo, perhaps help those who may be a bit tiddly and generally just keep an eye on things. It’s also worth checking the size of the photos, as you want to make sure you and your guests don’t have your heads cut off! Flattering lighting is also a must so everyone looks their best. Some companies have an online gallery so you can see all the photos another time, or have the images emailed straight to you there and then. The overall look of the photobooth is important too. They can range from plastic booths with a simple curtain to those with luxuriously think curtains, and finished in black and gold. Think 1920s glamour.

Carly Williams loves photographing styles of wedding and portraiture with a home-made, vintage feel. She captures moments in a natural and candid way, to create a collection of photographs which are sentimental, creative and unique. She runs her own photography business, CJ Williams Photography and has spent the last ten years behind the lens.
