Quo Vadis Meaning

Quo Vadis Camp Guide

Quo Vadis means... Quo Vadis is Latin and it means “where are you going?” Quo Vadis comes from the legend of St. Peter’s flight from the Emperor Nero’s persecution of Roman Christians in the first century. According to legend, Peter decided to flee Rome at the outbreak of the persecution, perhaps in fear, perhaps because he thought “the rock” should be somewhere safe so others could eventually find and cling to it, and to him. Heading out the Via Appia, Peter meets Jesus, who is heading into the city of Rome to face the persecution. “Quo Vadis, Domine,” Peter asks – “Lord, where are you going?” “I am going to Rome to be crucified,” Jesus answers – and disappears.

In Rome, you can visit the place on the Via Appia Antica where this meeting is said to have occurred. Christians have built a church on the spot to commemorate it. Quo Vadis is your encounter with Jesus. Each one of us comes to this sacred place from different situations. Like St. Peter, we will meet Jesus here. We too will have a choice to make - Do we follow Jesus where He leads us or go our own way? Ask Jesus as did St. Peter, “Quo Vadis, Domine?” Listen to Jesus, follow Him, and find your vocation and peace will follow.

“Lord, where are you going?” At this point, Peter turns back into the city to embrace martyrdom. When he returns they arrest him and wish to crucify him. He says, “I am unworthy to die in the same way that my Lord has died.” They crucified him upside down because of this.

Why Pray?

Now where are you going? It is not by chance or coincidence that you are here at this year’s Quo Vadis camp. Jesus has called you to spend this time with Him and he wants to spend this time with you! Give Him your heart and attention. Let your heart and mind be still so you can hear Him. Jesus Christ has a great and wonderful plan for your life. You may hear this a lot, or maybe it’s the first time you’ve heard that. It’s quite comforting, but it’s true too! The Father created you for a great mission and purpose, in your vocation. It’s your job to listen and hear Jesus Christ call you to your vocation.Your yes can lead to happiness and the salvation of you and others around you.

You might not know what your vocation is right now. That’s okay. We are all commonly called to holiness no matter what form or shape that takes. Jesus calls us to battle sin with His power and grace. He also calls us to grow in virtue and deepen our prayer life with Him so that we may ultimately obtain holiness. Quo Vadis is your chance to listen and grow closer to Jesus. Saying yes to God’s call will bring ultimately bring you the joy and peace you’re searching for.

For those of you who are young men, maybe Jesus is calling you to be a priest. For the young women reading this book, he may be calling you to become a sister. Maybe you are called to the married life. What’s important is to remember that He chooses us, we don’t choose Him. Be open to any possibility.

Remember to be open!

Quo Vadis Camp Guide

Why Pray? Prayer is necessary to voice our needs. “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Luke 11:9-10). Jesus commands us to ask the Father for everything. Turn to Him when you’re fearful, lost or angry. If you’re willing, share your entire life with Him and ask for everything! Prayer is needed because we need fulfillment. There is a desire inside our hearts that can’t be filled by instagram, twitter, or snapchat. God can fulfill that desire. Not only does he do that, but he makes our desires and dreams better than we can ever imagine. Life without prayer is like life without the daily food that you eat.You need to nourish your body every day to survive.Your soul needs to be nourished in the same way. So we must pray to nourish our souls. Prayer makes our relationships with others better. The better our relationship with God, the better our relationships with other people will be. The more we love God, the more we can love others. The closer we are to God, the greater our influence and effect on others will be. Love of God makes love for others possible.

Prayer is a precious privilege. Most people would be honored if a famous person wanted to have some one-on-one time with them. The Lord of the Universe, the King of Kings wants to spend time with you everyday. He delights in you. He invites you to communicate with Him! He wants you to tell Him everything, and He wants to help you. Instead of thinking of prayer as a burden or that boring thing they do in church, try thinking of it as a gracious gift. Prayer is necessary for thanking God. Look at it this way, we automatically say thank you to someone if they hold the door open for us. Now if someone gave you friendship, everything and everyone in your life, could you not say thank you to them? Your God gives you so much more than an open door, it isn’t too difficult to say thank you to him. Prayer is needed to battle sin. We need to apologize to God for sinning against him. A son who truly loves the Father weeps for his offenses. Once we acknowledge our sin and seek forgiveness, we pray for God’s grace to help us overcome sin and strengthen us in virtue.

Various Prayers

Prayer must be our first duty. Prayer must be our first duty. We can find lots of excuses for not praying. The biggest excuse on our list is not having enough time. Prayer is the means not the end. The end is what is most important because it is the goal; the means is what gets us to the end. Think of this example. An athlete lifts weights in order to become stronger. No one lifts weights just for the sake of lifting something heavy. The end is getting stronger and the means is lifting weights.

Pope Saint John Paul II was one of the busiest popes in history. He visited over 100 countries in his time of being pope. Do you think you could possibly be busier than that? When he was questioned his answer was, “The Pope’s first duty is prayer.” No excuses, prayer must come first. When we pray first, God gives us His power or grace to do all things and all things not just done, but done well. Without prayer, our greatest work amounts to nothing. With prayer, all things are possible.

Just like lifting weights makes no sense unless we understand the end, prayer makes no sense unless we understand the goal of prayer. The goal or end of prayer is union with God or what is called divine intimacy. The end is divine intimacy; the means is prayer.

Divine intimacy is the goal. Do you realize that God desires to be close to you? He hungers and thirsts for this. Not because God is incomplete without us, but because He is pure love. So that we would seek God in a real relationship, God created us with a similar ache and hunger for Him. The happiness we hunger for is only found in union with God. This is union with God is divine intimacy.

Then For five decades:

Amen.

Various Prayers

Prayer to St. Michael St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls Amen.

Glory Be Prayer of St. Francis Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

12

Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen

Salve Regina(Latin)

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo María!

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

O God Prayer The Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fatima Prayer O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Amen.

Vocation

16

Quo Vadis Camp Guide

Vocation It is a life of love in a concrete, particular form that comes from God. Each vocation begins with His love for us. This love involves His total gift of Himself to you, and our total gift of self to Him.

Vocation means “to call” in Latin. Christ our Lord tells us in John’s gospel, “You did not choose me, but I chose you” Jn 15:16. His choice for you is what makes a vocation different from an occupation or a career. You can choose an occupation or a career but a vocation, which means to call in Latin, is God’s choice for you. Often we are taught to ask, “What do I want to do in the future?” Instead, a vocation asks, “What does Jesus want for me?” When we say yes, we’re saying, “I want what Jesus wants.”

A vocation is the particular life He has chosen for you, and for which He has specifically created you. He is God and therefore knows which life will best bring about your salvation, your happiness, and His greatest glory. His call will completely fulfill you. A vocation means to be sent by Jesus on a mission to help Him bring His salvation to the world. The key to discovering your vocation is first to allow Jesus to show His merciful love to you. This love will make you capable of loving Him in return. It is vital to discover your vocation precisely because your fulfillment, happiness, and ultimately your salvation, whether that is as a priest, religious sister, brother, or married person.

“ You did not choose me, but I chose you.” -John 15:16

be enough for this existence. When did it get so hard? Your heart is beating, alive and breathing and there’s a reason why! You are essential, not accidental and you should realize. Refrain Sometimes a heart can feel like a heavy weight. It pulls you under and you just fall away. Is anybody gonna hear you call? But there’s a purpose under the surface and you don’t have to drown. Let me remind you that love will find you. Let it lift you out! Bridge: Don’t be afraid, don’t let hope fade. Keep your eyes fixed on the light above. Offertory Hymn

Holy Spirit by Francesca Batistelli

In Christ Alone Traditional

There’s nothing worth more, that could ever come close. No thing can compare, you’re our living hope.Your presence, Lord. I’ve tasted and seen of the sweetest of loves. Where my heart becomes free and my shame is undone.Your presence, Lord.

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my light, my strength, my song. This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All. Here in the love of Christ I stand.

Refrain: Holy Spirit,You are welcome here. Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere.Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for, to be overcome by Your presence, Lord.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save. ‘Til on that cross as Jesus died the wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid, here in the death of Christ I live, I live. There in the ground His body lay. Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious Day, up from the grave He rose again. And as He stands in victory, Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me. For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death. This is the power of Christ in me. From life’s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand. Till He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Exposition/Benediction

Stabat Mater Traditional At the cross her station keeping, Stood the mournful Mother weeping, Close to Jesus to the last. Oh, how sad and sore distressed Was that Mother highly blest Of the sole-begotten One! Christ above in torment hangs; She beneath beholds the pangs Of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep, Whelm’d in miseries so deep Christ’s dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain From partaking in her pain, In that Mother’s pain untold? Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled, She beheld her tender child All with bloody scourges rent. For the sins of His own nation, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His spirit forth He sent.

46

O sweet Mother! Fount of love! Touch my spirit from above; Make my heart with thine accord. Make me feel as thou hast felt; Make my soul to glow and melt With the love of Christ our Lord. Holy Mother! Pierce me through; In my heart each wound renew Of my Saviour crucified. Let me share with thee His pain, Who for all my sins was slain, Who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee, Mourning Him who mourned for me, All the days that I may live. By the cross with thee to stay, There with thee to weep and pray, Is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins best, Listen to my fond request Let me share thy grief divine.

Confession Guide

Steps to Confession 1.

Priest gives a blessing or greeting.

2. Make the sign of the cross and say, “Bless me father for I have sinned. It’s been... (How long, weeks, months, years,) since my last confession.”

3. Confess your sins that you went over in

your examination of conscience. If you aren’t sure if something is a sin ask the priest. This is your time with God where he’ll use his priest as an instrument to show you how much he loves you.

4. Once you finish confessing your sins,

the priest will give you penance to do and advice on how to become a better follower of Christ.

5. Say an Act of Contrition to reaffirm your confession of your sins.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my

God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. OR My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

6. The Priest, acting in the person of Christ, will extend his hands over you and absolves you of your sins.

Your Sins are forgiven.

Remember to do your penance! 50
