Reconciliation Guide 3

Friday, May 26 Reading: Acts 18:9-18 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.” So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.

Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you.

While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.” Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.” So he drove them off. Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever. Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps. 47:2-3, 4-5, 6-7 R. God is King of all the earth All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness, For the Lord, the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. He brings people under us; nations under our feet. He chooses for us our inheritance, the glory of Jacob, whom he loves. God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the Lord, amid trumpet blasts. Sing praise to God, sing praise; sing praise to our king, sing praise.

Gospel: John 16: 20-23 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Friday, May 26 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

In the first reading, Jesus knows his disicples aren’t comfortable with the next stage of their journey. He tells them,

What are your fears? Hopes? Desires?

“ Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”

We all have fears and apprehensions every so often, if not more often. It’s important to remember in the midst of these fears that we are not alone. Not only is God always with us, but we’re a team, a family. Together we’ll accomplish great things in Lourdes.

Is anything causing your anxiety or nervousness as we begin our journey?

Anything keeping you from being present in the moment?

How are you feeling? Think of these emotions.

Saturday, May 27 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

We’ve traveled for a ton of time and now we’ve finally arrived in Lourdes! For most of us, this is our first glimpse of this beautiful little city!

Mary went on her journey. What’s your journey been like so far?

In Today’s Gospel (Luke 1:39-56), we hear of Mary’s journey to see her cousin Elizabeth. The two exchange the news that they are pregrant! She says,

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

Sometimes with experiences like this we have expectations. Do you have any? Have they been met? Anything different?

Mary was humble and felt unworthy. How do you feel now that you are in Lourdes?

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

Sunday May, 28 First Reading: Acts 1:12-14 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

They all joined together in prayer with Mary the mother of Jesus

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 21:1, 4-5, 7-8 R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living. The Lord is my light and my slavtion; whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: To dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, That I may gaze on the loveliness of the Lord and contemplate his temple. Hear, O Lord, the sound of my call; have pity on me, and answer me. Of you my heart speaks; you my glance seeks.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 4:13-16 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

Gospel: John 17:1-11 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to

Sunday May, 28 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

Can you believe we are actually here?!? After preparing since December, did you actually think you would make it up to this moment?

What are the good things that you’ve seen here in Lourdes?

Every day, we are challenged to find good in this world. While it may be easy here in the sanctity of Lourdes with people who share our beliefs, we need to continue this. We need to bring this back home.

Where have you seen God? Was it in other volunteers? Whas it in the pilgrims?

“

Psalm 27

10

I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.

Questions to Ponder

Today is a formation day in prepartion of service. We learn the message of Lourdes, and hear Mary’s direct messages to Bernadette.

Do you believe that Mary invited you to Lourdes for these ten days?

“ “

Would you be so kind as to come here for 15 days? Pray for the conversion of sinners.

Who have you brought prayerfully/spiritually to Lourdes with you?

What part of the message of Lourdes speaks most powerfully to you?

“ “

I am the Immaculate Conception. Wash and drink at the spring.

Tuesday, May 30 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

Today we begin our service! We see a reverse, in which the lowly are placed in honor instead of the powerful.

Did you serve with anyone special today?

We work side by side with and serve men and women from all over the world! Our love for Jesus and Mary transcends our cultures and unites us with each other. Tonight we will celebrate the Eucharist with other English Speaking volunteers in a chapel dedicated to St. Patrick, the Irish missionary.

12

Did someone touch your heart in some way as you were ministering to them?

Wednesday, May 31 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

After a long day os service, community dinner, shared stories and laughter, our spirits are lifted and we’re encouraged. We get why Fr. John says that there is no whining allowed in Lourdes.

How have your hands served the needs of others today? This week?

Tonight we have the privilege of attending the Engagement Mass at St. Joseph’s Church. We witness volunteers like ourselves who after five years of service in Lourdes commit to return each year, God willing, to continue service.

No whining allowed in Lourdes!

In what ways have you seen more blessings come from giving than receiving? Did the example of the volunteers making their engagement inspire you in your faith journey?

Thursday June, 01 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

Each pilgrim is here because they truly believe in God and His great love. St. Bernadette truly believed the the Blessed Mother appeared to her. Imagine if that happened to you, or even telling someone about it!

In what ways do you feel God has kept you safe on this pilgrimage?

Psalm 16 reminds us of this: Keep me safe, my God,for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” I say of the holy people who are in the land, “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.” Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips. Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. You make known to me the path of life;you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

14

How have you felt hope in your belief in God?

Friday June, 02 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

Today we have the privilege of celebrating mass in the actual Grotto!!! We kneel where Bernadette knelt before Mary. We stand on Holy Ground where the Mother of God appeared. We bring all of our prayers, petitions, and loved ones to the Grotto before Mary. We also bring those whom we have served so far in Lourdes.

When you sit quietly in the Grotto, what do you feel in the depths of your heart?

We stand on Holy ground.

Do you feel moved to open your heart to Jesus and Mary? Is there a special place where I call home like the Grotto that I can also be quiet with Jesus and Mary in?

Saturday June, 03 Reflection

Questions to Ponder

Our service in Lourdes is nearing its end. Today we say goodbye to those we served this week. We thank them for their witness of faith and friendship! Promises to pray for each other are made! Don’t cry too much.

What have you learned from this service experience? We know there is so much, but what stuck out to you most?

Don’t cry too much. ;)

How can you bring this home to share with your friends and family?

How can you keep the spirit of Lourdes alive in your life as you return to the everyday routine of life at home?

Lourdes Prayer Guide

Sunday June, 04 First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

They were all together in one place. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 41 R. Lord send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, you are great indeed! How manifolds are your works, O Lord! the earth is full of your creatures;

If you take away their breathe, they perish and return to dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my them; I will be glad in the Lord.

17

Sunday June, 04 Second Reading: 1 Corintians 12:3-7, 12-13 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Gospel: John 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

“ 18

Peace be with you! As the Father sent me, I am sending you.

1 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Reflection

Questions to Ponder

We are very similar to the apostles right now. We shared in an incredible experience together. Just as Jesus instructed the disciples to bring his love out to others, we are instructed.

How do you feel about going home?

For the times when we will be like the apostles, hidden in a room, let us remember that the Holy Spirit is always with us and is calling us to go out with His strength.

Are you confident that you can bring a piece of Lourdes into your everyday life routine? How will you?

It’s Pentacost!

How can you remind yourself of the tender love that Jesus and Mary’s hold in their hearts specifically for you?

Vincentian Family Prayer

Mother of the Redeemer

Lord Jesus,You who willed to become poor,Give us eyes and a heart directed toward the poor, Help us to recognise You in them– In their thirst, their hunger, their loneliness and their misfortune

Loving Mother of the Redeemer, gate of heaven, star of the sea, assist your people who have fallen, as we strive to rise again. To the wonderment of nature, you bore your Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before.

Enkindle within our Vincentian family, unity, simplicity, humility and the fire of love that burned in St Vincent de Paul Strengthen us, so that, faithful to the practice of these virtues, We may contemplate You, and serve You, in the person of the poor, and may one day be united with You and them in Your kingdom.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting have pity on us poor sinners.

Lourdes Prayer Guide

Steps to Confession 1.

Priest gives a blessing or greeting.

2.

Make the sign of the cross and say,

OR My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

“Bless me father for I have sinned. It’s been... (How long, weeks, months, years,) since my last confession.”

3.

4.

5.

Confess your sins that you went over in your examination of conscience. If you aren’t sure if something is a sin ask the priest. This is your time with God where he’ll use his priest as an instrument to show you how much he loves you. Once you finish confessing your sins, the priest will give you penance to do and advice on how to become a better follower of Christ. Say an Act of Contrition to reaffirm your confession of your sins. O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.

6.

The Priest, acting in the person of Christ, will extend his hands over you and absolves you of your sins.

You are forgiven of all your sins! Go in peace and remember to do your penance!
