May 2019 Senior Edition A YEAR IN REVIEW OCTOBER 2018

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The month of May has brought sun, rain and wind; a few 60 degree days, but mostly the brisk, invigorating chill of 30 degrees. No matter what the weather, time continues to go on, and so do the emotions. Students are sad their time as a SM Saint is dwindling but are eager for the promises of the future. As the year comes to a close, so does our time at 1025 N 2nd street. Not only will this be the last publication with me as the editor, but it will also be the last Messenger distributed at 1025 N 2nd street. The Messenger staff has worked hard all year to bring our readers material they will enjoy. In this final issue, the class of 2019 looks back on their high school years and offers their advice to the underclassmen who are starting their adventures at the new school. Thank you to all our readers, and best of luck to our seniors as they leave 1025 N 2nd street to start their future adventures.

OUR MISSION

First issue! Students reminisce about their eventful summer. The tragic loss of our previous Messenger editors hit us hard. Nonetheless, the fall of 2018 brought new beginings and priests.

DECEMBER 2018 Winter begins and the spirit of Christmas fills us! The fall play, Little Women, was put on in the start of December.

Kathryn Goettle Editor-in-Chief

Here at Messenger, we love to see the groups of people huddled around our paper, the proud smile when students read articles about themselves, and the slight laughs as students make fun of our bad attempts at jokes. Our mission at the Messenger is to produce a quality newsletter that provides insight into SMCHS by featuring our own students and their accomplishments and goals. So, before you go sitting in the newest road construction, grab a copy of the Messenger and flip through its pages!

FEBRUARY 2019 In the March for Life this year, St. Mary’s was at the front. We also brought home the Know Your Faith state trophy!

APRIL 2019 The last regular Messenger at 1025 N Second Street! We reconnect with an old friend (it’s Mr. Vetter) and the Speech Team gets second place at state!

OUR SENIOR EDITORS KATHRYN GOETTLE | EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

K

athryn Goettle was born on August 19th, 2000 and before long was determined to become an ardent reader and writer. Not only was she well on her way to becoming Editor-in-Chief of the St. Mary’s Messenger, but she was also preparing herself to become an avid Baker. From the moment she ate an entire chocolate cake by herself at 9 months old, Kathryn has loved baking and trying new desserts. In order to burn the calories from all her sugar, Kathryn does not allow herself to sit still, but stays active in all her extra curricular activities. Being captain of the speech team, playing varsity soccer, blowing through a trombone in wind orchestra and jazz band, advocating for faith and life in Leo Lions, Vera Forma, Saints for Life, and Assistant chaplains are just a few of the ways she stays moving. She is not quite sure how she will shed the sugar in college, but is currently planning on pursuing degrees in both psychology and exercise science at the University of Mary.

T

GRACE VOLK | FEATURE EDITOR

hey thought the world was going to end at the turn of the century, but then Grace was born on August 28, 2000. She instantly took to sports, waiting to be old enough to play in traveling basketball. But then she changed her mind. She instantly took to violin and guitar-wait, not that either. As she grew up, Grace delved into many different activities and career choices including medicine, politics, and lately writing. However, whatever wild idea Grace gets, she perfects and makes it beautiful. So, as she has now decided what she wants to go into as a career, (for now anyway-something to do with writing but plans change). It is safe to say Grace does everything with purpose and passion, and we’ll have to stay tuned to what’s to come with her.

ANDERSON HAGEROTT | SPORTS EDITOR

A

nderson Hagerott was born on a cold December evening in 1999. The first thing you should know about him is he is a huge nerd, but not in any of the cool ways. He loves movies and is a big history buff. His favorite show is Star Trek, and his favorite movie is We Were Soldiers with Gettysburg as a close second. It’s often been said that sarcasm is his native language, and he loves to talk about history and movies. He has been part of the Messenger for three years and the sports editor for two. He is a private second class in the North Dakota Army National Guard. He will be going to Fort Leonard Wood Missouri for six months following graduation to become a licensed military police officer. He plans on going to NDSU starting in January to get a degree in criminal justice and a commission as an officer in the United States Army through their ROTC program (Reserve Officer Training Corp). Outside of school, Anderson enjoys hunting, hiking, and watching movies.
