Community Service Over the Holiday Season With a growing need for service in Bismarck-Mandan, the Messenger features two organizations in our area | Megha Bharadwaj & Brandon Prichard

ow that the holiday season is approaching, you are probably getting ready to visit your relatives, go on vacations, or spend time baking with your family. But sometimes we neglect to think about those less fortunate, whether they are people living on the streets or children whose parents can’t afford Christmas gifts. And even though we might not personally know anyone in these conditions, they are all around our city. That is why there are programs such as Ministry on the Margins and the Salvation Army, which are the organizations we will be shedding a light on in this spotlight piece. According to the Ministry on the Margins website, this non-profit organization is “a volunteer-based ecumenical ministry committed to supporting those who fall through the cracks during times of transition.” Ministry on the Margins was only recently founded by Sister Kathleen Atkinson at the Annunciation Monastery. It was started in 2013 and it is now run by the Benedictine Sisters there. There are stories of how Ministry on the Margins has helped people who live in the Bismarck-Mandan community on

their website. Let’s take a look at the story of a young man named Marcus. Marcus grew up in Chicago and was often in trouble with the law. When he was 27, Marcus decided to change the direction of his life. Ministry on the Margins helped Marcus achieve two goals. Those goals were to get his GED and to find God. With the Ministry on the Margins’ help, he achieved his goals. He was the first person in his family to receive a high school diploma, and he was baptized while still in prison. Now that Marcus is out of
3 prison, he has mentors who help and support him. In addition to getting his life back, Marcus is an inspiration to people stuck in bad and unfortunate situations. St. Mary’s sophomore Solveigh Barney is a regular volunteer in the Margins food pantry on Thursday nights. Solveigh says she volunteers because “it makes you feel happy that you can spread kindness to those in our community and it makes you aware of all the wonderful people who are in need. It also helps you grow socially, virtuously, and makes you a better leader.” Ministry on the Margins helps the community by providing worship services, hot meals, and emotional support. If you would like to volunteer, all you have to do is go to their website, find a time and date that works for you, and register! It’s that simple.
Ministry on the Margins serves the community by providing goods and services to the poor. To volunteer go to... ministryonthemargins.com/ Another charitable organization is the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army provides basic necessities such as food and clothing to anyone who is in need. The Salvation Army also offers Christian worship services. Today, the organization stands strong in 120 countries by serving the poor and preaching the gospel in 160 languages. The non-profit organization was started by Methodist minister William Booth and his wife, Catherine. The organization originated in London, England, in 1865. Due to William and Catherine Booth’s desire to service the impoverished community, the Salvation Army was established and continues to flourish. Over the Christmas season the Salvation Army sees its biggest contributions. During the months of November and
Picture found on Ministry on the Margins Facebook page December the Salvation Army is known for ringing bells in locations throughout the world to bring attention to the people who have fallen into troubled times. Every year millions of dollars, all from generous donors who hear those ringing bells, are donated to people who go hungry, unclothed, and unsheltered. These bells can be heard even in our own community. There are set locations throughout the Bismarck-Mandan community to donate money to the Salvation Army. For example, you might notice a donation pail across the street at Arrowhead Plaza’s Dan’s Supermarket. Money, food, and clothing can also be donated to the Salvation Army’s headquarters on 601 South Washington Street in Bismarck, ND. The Salvation Army is also looking for people to donate hours of service over the holiday season. There are numerous options for people who wish to help out this organization. From ringing bells in assigned destinations to working in the Salvation Army’s headquarters, there is no such thing as wasted time when you are giving your time to the less fortunate.

hen someone thinks of Christmas a few different things come to mind, some of which include the food, the presents, and family. But one thing no one ever forgets is the tree. Having a Christmas tree is a tradition that will never die. To have the perfect Christmas tree there are three essential things one needs: a good tree, decorations, and admiration. First is the tree. Many people today get a fake tree, which isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not far from it. There’s something about a fake tree that isn’t the same; the buying of a real tree just creates so many good memories. A large part of Christmas is the experience of going to tree lot after tree lot, trying to find a place that’s not yet sold out, and standing out in the bitter cold, looking at scrawny little trees while burning your tongue on hot apple cider. And when putting up the tree it’s trying again and again to get it straight in the base, watering it every day, and making bets with your family on how long it will live. So maybe none of those sound appealing to you, but there is truly nothing like the smell of a fresh tree in your living room and the memories that come with it. One day, you look back and are glad you stood in the cold all those hours. After you have the perfect tree, it must be decorated. The two essentials for a Christmas tree are the lights and a few ornaments. Though it seems to be a tradition to put popcorn strings and paper rings, these are not the decorations that will put a person in awe when examining a tree. When people go to the store to buy lights, they stare up at the options wondering which ones to use. Once they finally decide, do they have them flashing or solid? The best decorations are the simplest. White lights, not flashing. If someone is tired of plain white lights, then the best thing to do is to add either red or blue, but the decorator must be careful because too many colors and lights can make the tree look crowded. Putting on the lights and ornaments takes strategy and patience. It is crucial that the lights go on first, otherwise the entire tree will be ten times

more difficult to decorate. For the lights, it is best to have two people, one on either side of the tree. Starting from the top and stringing down is usually easiest. Next come the ornaments. Spaces on the tree must be evenly covered, but not crowded. The decorator should start with the breakable or most precious ornaments and hang them near the top, so pets and kids cannot break them. Then make their way down the tree, strategically placing the less breakable ones near the bottom. Finally, step back and see which spaces need to be filled; adding a candy cane or any leftover ornaments to empty spaces can make a huge difference. The last step to creating any tree is admiration. After taking so much time to create the perfect tree, someone needs take time to admire it. Turning off all the house lights, cuddling up with a blanket and hot cocoa, and sitting in awe at the beautiful creation, can bring anyone a great deal of peace.

Study Tips for Getting You Through Finals | Amalia Thomas
I
t’s that time of year again. Yep, you guessed it: finals week. For many people this means a week of stress, anxiousness, too much coffee, and studying until your brain hurts. But I am here to tell you that there is hope for a more comfortable and well-balanced finals week. Yes, everyone, that’s right. I have some tips to make things go a little smoother overall during one of the scariest weeks of the year. Let’s talk about preparation: 1-2 weeks before finals... 1 In the weeks prior to finals week, look over and study old material from your classes, especially the ones you find most challenging. I find it easiest to pick one subject for each night of the week and review class materials for about twenty minutes. 2 Make sure you are getting enough rest and eating healthy. A wellbalanced sleep and meal schedule lays a sturdy foundation for all the learning you are doing. 3 Organize all the materials that you will be studying. You’d be surprised how much easier this makes studying. Also, making flashcards is a miraculous way to speed up the studying process and ensures you will retain lots of information. I highly recommend the app Quizlet; it gives many different options for studying your flashcards so you can find a style that works best for you. Also, Quizlet is on your phone, so you can study on the go whenever you have a moment to spare.
Picture found on ldssmile.com
Now for finals week... 1 Do not cram information at one in the morning the night before that math final you have been procrastinating studying for. Establish a fairly reasonable bedtime and stick to it. At least 7 hours of sleep a night is crucial to retention of studied materials and allows you the focus you need to do your best on the finals the next day. 2 Eat healthy and drink lots of water. Sipping water prior to or during a test actually helps your brain! Researchers have actually found in a study of students taking an exam that the group of students who drank a glass of water in the hall prior to testing had scores nearly 10% better than the control group who had no water to drink. 3 Don’t stress. You have prepared well for this week so don’t freak yourself out about things. Do your best and give it your all!

What can fans expect from Star Wars: The Last Jedi? | Anderson Hagerott
S
o, the new Star Wars movie is coming out soon and it is wrapped in controversy. Over the past year, fans have been watching trailers, digging up propaganda, and making all sorts of theories and speculations as to what could possibly happen in the new Star Wars. And almost all of it is centered around everyone’s favorite Jedi, Luke Skywalker. But while fans tirelessly search for the truth, Disney has made no small effort to hide it. Vague trailers and misleading tweets have left fans with more questions than answers. But what are the big questions fans should be asking? How do we know which trail interpretations are solid and which ones are downright sacrilegious? And, which theories might actually have merit? At the Messenger we have worked tirelessly to find the most important theories and questions and gather expert thoughts and interpretations on what fans can expect to find in the new Star Wars movie.
WILL LUKE SKYWALKER DIE IN THE LAST JEDI?
This has been a major concern among fans since the name of the movie was announced. When posters were released, fans just couldn’t ignore the fact that their favorite Jedi may not survive the next movie. So the question is, does “The Last Jedi” mean that Luke is going to die leaving Rey as the last surviving Jedi? Disney has already proven that they’re not afraid to knock off a few
beloved characters. Now that Han Solo is dead, all the original characters are forfeit. It’s also worth noting that when Star Wars: The Force Awakens was first released several fans predicted that Luke would now be playing more of a Ben Kenobi role, alluding that Luke could meet the same end as his former master. But luckily for fans, there is still hope. As any grammar nerd could probably tell you, the word “Jedi” is both singular and plural. So, the “The Last Jedi” may be referring to the last existing group of Jedi. Rey and Luke, in this case. There was little evidence to support this theory until recently, when posters for the movie started being released to countries in Europe and Asia. The posters were released in these country’s native languages, which is important to note because most of these countries languages (such as Spanish) don’t have words that are both singular and plural. Many fans were shocked to discover that on posters released in Spain the word Jedi was in the plural form. This means that there will be a least two Jedi in this movie. Unless Disney somehow manages to bring another Jedi out of the woodwork, it will most likely be Luke and Rey.
WILL LUKE TURN TO THE DARK SIDE?
Just as fans were beginning to believe that their favorite Jedi might not be dying, an even worse theory started to emerge:
8 Their longtime childhood hero might now turn to the dark side. Evidence to this theory began to emerge after the official trailer was released. At the end of the trailer, fans say Luke stands at entrance of the Force Tree looking back at an unknown figure. The trailer ends with Luke saying that it is time for the Jedi to end. Full disclosure, it’s possible that is could just be a jumble of words that were put together by the editing department for suspense and Luke never actually says this in the actual movie. But, this has led several
“
“In
the last few months of production, Mark Hamill began making his objections about his character and the movie public.”
fans to believe Luke may be turning to the dark side. You’re probably thinking “This is ridiculous, there’s no way the poster child for the Jedi Order is turning to the dark side.” But hear me out. In the last few months of production, Mark Hamill began making his objections about his character and the movie public. When Disney began filming, Mark Hamill told Rian Johnson, director of TLJ, that he completely disagrees with everything that Johnson is doing with his character. Shortly after, he told a reporter he is downright insulted by what is happening to his character. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Luke is going to become a Sith Lord, but it’s hard to imagine what else could happen to Luke that Mark Hamill would be so displeased with. More proof of Luke’s dark transformation was just released a few months ago in Japan. Disney released two connected posters depicting the light and dark sides. Luke appears on both posters. This could represent a possible dark change that Luke will undergo in the upcoming movie. Still, it seems unlikely that a man who was willing to die a slow and painful death at the hands of the Emperor would now be willing to completely abandon everything to join the Sith. Many fans agree and are now speculating that Luke will not turn to the dark side, nor will he stay in the light, but instead, walk the line somewhere in the gray. That’s right, several fans now believe that Luke will become a Gray Jedi. For those of you who don’t know, Gray Jedi are Jedi who don’t identify with just the light or the dark side but instead draw power from both, which is said to make them more powerful. You may know some famous Gray Jedi such as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s former master Qui-Gon Jinn and Anakin’s former apprentice Ahsoka Tano. There are several hints in almost every trailer Disney has released that seem to prove these theories. In one trailer, Luke tells Rey to breath and then asks her what she sees. She replied, “I see light, darkness,
the balance,” which is really the philosophy of the gray Jedi. Mark Hamill even confirmed that TLJ will be grayer than any other films in the franchise. But you’re still probably wondering, “Why would Luke suddenly walk away for the light side?” I think to answer this you need to think about where he is coming from. The Jedi Order has made a lot of mistakes in the past. They misinterpreted the prophecy and found the wrong kid to be the chosen one. They allowed the Sith to take up positions of power right under their noses which allowed them to overthrow the government and almost destroy the Jedi Order. And let’s not forget Luke’s most recent failure, the return of the Sith and the destruction of the Jedi Temple (again). So maybe Luke has lost faith in the Jedi philosophy and, in his absence, discovered that only this gray area of the force can truly bring balance to the universe. Disney seems to disagree with these theories. When these theories began to emerge, a Disney executive tweeted that idea of gray Jedi, “just isn’t Star Wars.” Despite Disney’s refusal to confirm or deny the prospect of gray Jedi in the new Star Wars movie, I think fans can expect to see a lot more gray in TLJ.
IS REY LUKE’S DAUGHTER?
This has been on every fans’ minds since The Force Awakens and you could write a novel about every theory out there. Still, there’s no solid evidence to say yes or no. So far all we know about Rey’s parents is that they suck, which when you think about it, is a trend in the Skywalker family. There is no denying that Rey’s life mirrors that of Luke and Anakin’s; a little fatherless child is stranded on a desert planet and unknowingly has the power to save (or destroy) the galaxy until found by new and interesting friends who take them on exciting adventures. She also has several Skywalker characteristics, such as her piloting, engineering talents, and her ability to use the Force without any training. But is there any proof? Disney has been less than forthcoming over the last few months. In the most recent trailer, Luke tells Rey he refuses to train her because she has the same power as Kylo Ren (Han Solo and Princess Leia’s son). The same power could indicate Kylo Ren and Rey are cousins making Rey Luke’s daughter, or they could be brother and sister making Luke her uncle. The only evidence of this, though, is Luke’s teary eyes at the end of TFA. Last year Mark Hamill posted a picture of Daisy Ridley and him at party together, captioning the pic with “hanging out with my daughter.” Many fans immediately took this as undeniable proof that Rey is in fact not Luke’s daughter. This is understandable, but let’s not forget about all the evidence in TFA. When Rey was in Mas Kanata’s bar, Luke’s light saber called to her from a box in the basement. This means that she is the rightful heir to the Skywalker lightsaber. When she touched it, she had a vision of the Jedi temple burning while Luke mourns his losses and Kylo Ren and his Sith slaughter the last remaining Jedi. But what if this isn’t a vision, what if it’s a memory? Fans speculate that Rey actually trained at that temple under her father (or uncle) Luke Skywalker. Which means she was also there when it was destroyed. In the vision, we saw a Sith almost kill Rey when Kylo stabbed him in the back. So maybe Kylo saved her because she possesses the awesome power of the Skywalker and he wanted to utilize it. Luke, being a good father, could have hidden her away to protect her. Or maybe Kylo feared her power and he was the one who left her on that desert plant in hopes he would never see her again. I believe fans will find that Rey is somehow related to Luke, whether she’s his daughter, niece, or friend of the family.

Teacher’s Pick: Mr. Vetter
Mr. Vetter talks acting and the best time of the year | Kathryn Goettle & Grace Volk
D
id you enjoy the fall play this year? Want to know more about acting or the surprise appearances of Mr. Vetter’s “friends” who show up to class every so often? The director of the fall play and AP English teacher Mr. Vetter sat down to answer a few questions about acting, Christmas, and more with the SM Messenger. Get to know Mr. Vetter and some of his favorite things about the holiday season!
MESSENGER: What is the best way to get into character? MR.VETTER: I have zero acting experience, but the best advice
I give to the play cast is you need to step outside your normal personality and not be afraid to look silly. It’s not acting if you’re just behaving like yourself. M: When you dress up for class, how do you decide which character to be on a certain day? V: I have no idea what you’re talking about. The only time I “dress up” for class is on Mass days, obviously. Except on Halloween when I was a Target employee for a day. That was fun. M: Christmas is just around the corner. What is your favorite thing about the season? V: I think the 3-month span of October, November, December is the best time of year. I mean, summer is great, but the fall/early winter atmosphere, combined with the awesomeness of Christmas can’t be beat. The lights, decorations, music, family time, and overall happiness - there’s no other time of year that invokes the same emotions. M: What is your favorite holiday book or movie? V: Obvious answer, but A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Our whole idea of “Christmas cheer” largely stems from that novella. And the best movie version of it, by the way, (because there are a ton) is the musical version starring The Muppets. Not even kidding.
Mr. Corncob and Peaky Jim are regular substitutes for Mr. Vetter’s classes.
How to Shop For A Picky Person | Hannah Gardner & Audrey Wentz
O
ne of the most tedious tasks is shopping for a picky person. Often, a person who is hard to shop for is very particular and likes things a certain way. Here are a few ways you can shop for your mysterious loved ones who you just don’t know what to get. Step 1: Make a list of his or her likes and dislikes. Doing this helps set a basic guideline to know what he or she generally wants. If you need more info, ask friends or family. Checking the person’s social media for fanbases they are a part of or brands they like. Step 2: Get creative. Many picky shoppers don’t settle for the things they first see, but rather what is special to them- something that makes them feel like an individual and things that follow their style. Use any info you got in step 1 to really narrow down your selection to choose something that will let the person receiving the gift know that you put time and effort into this. Step 3: Choose an item that is meaningful to that person. Usually, a gift that they want is something that came from your own heart that touches theirs. If nothing store-bought is special enough for

your loved one, make something yourself! Remember, it doesn’t have to be material. You could make your friend a song or playlist. Try to schedule an event together that you know the person will really love. Shopping for someone who is picky can be very difficult, but a gift from the heart is what truly matters and will make a person happy. If you still feel hopeless after this article, you can never go wrong with gift cards.

Saint of the Month: St. Nicholas | Grace Volk
S
t. Nicholas was born in the village Patara located in Myra (modern day Turkey) around the end of the 3rd century. He was born into a wealthy, Christian family, but his parents died from an epidemic when Nicholas was only a young boy. Nicholas used his inheritance to care for the sick and poor. He was named Bishop of Myra while still a young man and was known for his generosity, love of children, and care for sailors. Due to the harsh laws of Rome at the time by Diocletian, all Christians were persecuted for their faith including St. Nicholas. He was exiled and thrown into prison. Following his release from prison, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. It is said that while debating the Holy Trinity at the Council of Nicea, St. Nicholas became so outraged by the stance of Arius (who was arguing that Christ the Son was not equal to God the Father) got up and slapped Arius across the face. The other bishops were shocked at what Nicholas did. They stripped him of his title of Bishop of Myra and put him in prison. Nicholas was

ashamed of what he did, and when Mary appeared to him later that night in the prison cell asking why he was imprisoned, he replied, “Because of my love for you.” St. Nicholas was later released from prison and reinstated as the Bishop of Myra. The tale of St. Nicholas as Santa Claus became popular around the 16th Century. It started in northern Europe, or more specifically, the U.K. He was known as ‘Father Christmas,’ although he earned different names in various European countries. In France, he was formally called ‘Père Nöel’ and when the story came to the U.S., ‘Kris Kringle’ became the popular ‘Santa Claus.’ He is known as the man who brings gifts to children, though the legend became more developed in 1823 when Dr. Clement Clarke Moore wrote the poem “T’was the Night Before Christmas.” The poem tells of Santa Claus and his eight reindeer. No one knows the exact date of Nicholas’ death, but it is acknowledged on his feast day, December 6th, around the year 345 AD. He is the patron saint of children and sailors.

Saints Roll Past Deacons at State The football team lifts fourth state title in five years | Kendall Tibor
I
think we can all agree: the St. Mary’s football team kicked some tail-end and took some names (including State AA Champs!). With a record of 9-2 this year, our boys put in a lot of work. Their practices include many drills, weight lifting, running, and watching films of games. These practices are nowhere near easy; they definitely make the players tired and sweaty. But pushing through the uncomfortableness of practice is how this team has gotten to where it is. The seventeen seniors will surely be missed next year, with their great talent, hard work, and leadership; however, the team has many strong juniors, sophomores, and freshmen who will step up and fill their seniors’ roles. We can see that already this year. When, for example, John Nordberg was injured, it was a little rough for the team. But people stepped up and put in work to fill his spot. It’s safe to say one of the high points of every Saints’ season this year was the defeat of Shanley in the State Championship game. Due to the loss to Shanley earlier in the season, the team was looking for revenge. With only 2 first downs and 41 yards for both teams in the first quarter, one could see that this was going to be a game of stamina and discipline. And as the game turned out, the Saints proved their dominance in both. The Saints won the title with a final score of 31-12.

t is that time of year again, when we say goodbye to all the amazing volleyball played by our St. Mary’s team. The volleyball season for the girls began a week before school started and they had been working hard ever since. With no sophomore team, they had to work very hard to compensate for the lost team. Well, they did an amazing job compensating. They ended their wonderful season with a WDA Conference Record of 8-12 and an overall record of 19-22, which is awesome. The girls, with their great overall record, entered WDA with their first games against Century and Minot.

Unfortunately, they didn’t make it to state, but at least they went out with a bang with a great overall record. “Good things about this season. We had great senior and junior leadership. We had a lot of inexperienced girls playing JV and Varsity, but they stepped up to the challenge and played really good competitive volleyball all season,” said Head Coach Kyle Kuether. Overall, the volleyball season was very good this year. Even though the girls didn’t make it into state they had a great season. Hopefully they can keep up the good works for the next seasons to come.
