A Thank You from your Editor-in-Chief Dear Reader, When I took on the role of Editor-in-Chief of the SM Messenger last fall, I had no idea what incredible things the Lord had in store for our program. After several years of struggling to find writers and senior editors to meet the demands of pulling together a quality newspaper each month, the SM Messenger was in desperate need of reform. When I met with the six current senior editors last summer, together we formed a vision for what we wanted our school newspaper to accomplish. Above all else, we wanted to provide St. Mary’s students, faculty, and alumni with a product that they could be proud of, a newspaper that was informative and entertaining to read, and that would serve as a foundation for forming connections with people around the Bismarck/Mandan community. This is when I first sensed God at work. He provided six phenomenal seniors, each with their own set of skills and talents to share, who loved the Messenger as much as I did and had the passion and work ethic to bring our vision to fruition. My heart is forever grateful to Alexandra Reichert, David Schwartz, Emilie Voeller, Lauren Nordberg, Nathan Marcotte, and Courtney Emmil for the hours of work they invested each month to make our school newspaper a reality. Thank you for sharing your gifts with our school and I wish each of you all the best in your future endeavors. The next blessing came in the form of nearly 20 writers and photographers, who willingly sacrificed some extra sleep for our early morning meetings and generously gave of their time and talents to write articles and take pictures for each month’s edition. I am tremendously grateful to each of them for their dedication, their willingness to do whatever I asked, and for the many laughs we shared along the way. I would be remiss not to extend my sincerest gratitude to our Messenger advisors and the SMCHS administration. Mrs. Stromme, thank you for the countless hours you put in behind the scenes finding advertisers to fund our programming and your constant encouragement of every wild idea that ever flew into my head. Mr. Vetter, thank you for filling in as one of our photographers and for all of your work in helping us prepare the Senior Edition. Mrs. Cain, Mr. Ruggles, and Mr. Schumacher, thank you for your tremendous support of our program and for your guidance in helping us to create the best newspaper possible. I am very thankful to each of you for the crucial role you play in making the SM Messenger a reality. Finally, I would like to thank our readers. Our success this year never would have happened without your support. It is my sincere hope that you have enjoyed reading the SM Messenger each month and that you have found our website and Facebook page a helpful resource for staying connected with the events at our school. I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer vacation.
Blessings, Emelie Swonger Editor-in-Chief
Editor Biographies
Emelie Swonger – Editor-in-Chief
On April 23rd, 1998, Emelie Rose Swonger flew into Bismarck on the wings of a springtime bluebird, as opposed to the traditional stork. Her affinity for literature and her massive vocabulary became quite evident when she uttered her first words: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Her parents assumed that her unique choice of words must be due to the fact that she shared a birthday with William Shakespeare, but to seal the deal, they gave her the middle name, Rose. Emelie’s vocabulary continued to expand as she grew older, and by the time she was a 6th grader, she qualified for the state spelling bee. Unfortunately, her dream of going on to the national spelling bee was devastatingly crushed after a minute error in spelling the word “gristle”, a word used to describe a fatty piece of meat. Suffice to say, Emelie will never be able to eat meat again without the knowledge of her defeat. When she isn’t busy reading the dictionary or her favorite classic author, Emelie enjoys writing and editing articles for the SM Messenger. Her writings have also been published in the North Dakota Living Magazine, Dakota Catholic Action newspaper, and even the New York Times. (Just kidding about that last one.) Emelie is also a born performer, as evidenced by the countless home videos of her concerts, plays, and dance recitals. Throughout elementary and middle school, Emelie was actively involved in Shade Tree Players, and during her high school years, she made several cameo appearances for the SMCHS Drama Department. Starting at the age of three, Emelie began taking dance classes, and has explored a variety of dance styles over the years, but her favorite forms of dance are ballet and modern. In the fall, Emelie will be attending Northwestern College in Orange City, the happiest town in the state of Iowa. Emelie plans on majoring in English Education with a minor in Arts Administration. It is her sincere hope to be involved in theatre, dance, and writing for the Northwestern College newspaper, The Beacon. Emelie is extremely grateful for the love and support of the SMCHS community and looks forward to the new experiences awaiting her in the year ahead.
Courtney Emmil – Layout Editor
Believe it or not, Courtney was actually born with Nutrish in one hand and an iced caramel macchiato in the other. For as long as she can remember, Courtney has always loved talking (surprise, surprise), especially in front of people. Upon entering high school, she decided to use the talents God gave her and joined the speech team. But in all reality, she merely joined speech because she loves school so much and wants to spend every Saturday she possibly can at school. Not only is she involved in speech, but she is also very active in every club possible and says yes to every opportunity given to her, even if that means slaving away at a computer 15 hours a month working on this beautiful newspaper you are currently reading. Later on in high school she fell in love (and no, we are not talking about Jacob Scheetz) with a pretty cool organization called FBLA. FBLA has since taken over any free time she has left and Mrs. Eileen Larson, FBLA’s rad advisor who is better known as Mama Lars, will even admit Courtney is her favorite student. This is probably because of the countless hours Courtney spends in her classroom, not to mention buying her coffee on a daily basis. This fall, Courtney plans on attending Bismarck State College, where she will pursue a degree in Graphic Design and Communications. Her game plan is to join only one club (the collegiate level of FBLA, obviously), watch some Netflix, and wear clothes that are (sadly) not provided by The Uniform Center.
Lauren Nordberg – Religion Editor
If you’ve ever considered yourself to be the most awkward person around, don’t worry, because Lauren Nordberg has you beat. Lauren has always struggled with keeping cool in awkward situations, but she believes that this characteristic is a blessing, not a curse. Lauren plays volleyball (when she isn’t getting hit in the face), cheers (when she doesn’t drop her teammates), and plays tennis (also when she isn’t getting hit in the face). Besides the SM Messenger, she is a member of Science Club, Saints for Life, Leo Lions, and Robotics Club… Oh wait, she got kicked off of that. In her free time, Lauren enjoys rollerblading and watching the Walking Dead on Netflix. She also likes to hang out with her friends, but always prefers to hang out with her mom, Leslie. One of her greatest accomplishments in life is her Snapchat score. Next year, Lauren plans to attend NDSU where she will major in pharmacy.
David Schwartz - Sports Editor
At the time of graduation, David will be approximately 18.633879781420765 years old. In that time, he has accomplished many of his goals. They include, but are not limited to: becoming a major league gamer, an extreme outdoor survivalist, a professional athlete, and a master parkour Jedi. (Learning the ways of the Schwartz has been very important to David.) In David’s free time, when he is not learning the ways of the Schwartz, one of his favorite hobbies is playing video games. He has many trophies to show for his gaming experience and hopes to do it professionally someday. David has also been very active in scouting. In fact, he is so experienced in outdoor survival that some say he was Bear Grylls in a past life. David loves the sport of track and field. Once, during a track meet, he jumped a whole football field in triple jump and ran the 110 meter hurdles in 10 seconds flat. Overall, David has learned many skills in the past 18.63-whatever years. Next year, he hopes to share these skills with a college near you!
Alexandra Reichert – Features Editor
On August 11th, 1999, the most beautiful baby in the world came into existence…her name was Birgen Black. Interestingly enough, exactly one year earlier, the most normal baby in the world was born. That baby just so happened to be me, Alexandra Ruth Reichert. I came into the world full of smiles (though the doctor claimed it was just gas) and itching to spread laughter wherever I went. As the most normal child ever born I went through a happy childhood, an EXTREMELY awkward few years of middle school (all you Cathedral kids remember that), and somehow found myself in the halls of St. Mary’s Central High School the first day of freshman year. Almost everyone can agree that high school is a learning experience. However, it isn’t just about learning the rules of three-court from Mr. Ferrie or struggling to understand what Mr. Haug calls “common frickin’ sense!”, but it is also about learning who you are and what it is you care about most. That takes courage. Now, telling high school students to just “Be themselves!” is pretty much equivalent to cheesy sports cheers like, “Team work makes the dream work!” So instead I’ll leave you all with a much more important message. Pope St. John Paul II began his papacy by saying, “Be not afraid.” Now, that seems to be a rather odd way to begin a papacy, and perhaps it is an odd way to exit high school, but his words bear truth. I not only want to encourage high school students to be themselves, but I also want to encourage them to be brave. Be brave and speak up when you feel you have something important to say and be brave when you know what is right but are afraid to do it. Don’t be afraid to do something different from those around you and always be brave enough to call yourself and others to something greater. High school is also about finding your passions. Go out and try something new. Having courage led me to some of my greatest passions: music, words, my faith, coffee shops, and of course, lipstick. Courage can lead you to all sorts of exciting things, and next year it is leading me, the most normal child in the world, to the College of St. Benedict where I will be majoring in Business and minoring in English. If anyone is interested in visiting the CSB-SJU campus next year, don’t be afraid to give me a call! Finally, I just want to say thank you to Emelie Swonger for being an amazing senior editor this year, to Courtney Emmil for all the late nights spent designing the newspaper, to Mrs. Stromme and Mr. Vetter for their work as advisors, to my wonderful writers, and also to you readers for taking the time to read the Messenger each month. God bless, Alexandra Reichert
Emilie Voeller – Entertainment Editor
On a sunny afternoon in May 1998, Emilie Voeller was born. Being the great, great, great, great granddaughter of Charles Dickens, she obviously had a knack for literature. This was made apparent when she completed reading Shakespeare’s First Folio by age 3 and shortly after moved on to reading something easier: War and Peace. Growing up Emilie led a pretty average life, going to school, dancing, and writing novels under her pen name, Suzanne Collins. Emilie joined Saintiques in 7th grade and remained on the team through her senior year. Being this year’s only senior, she became the team captain by default and led the team to numerous victories. In 8th grade, Emilie joined the speech team, and has been an active speech participant ever since. This year, Emilie placed third in the humorous and entertain categories at the state competition. She is also the editor of the entertainment section of the Messenger, so one could say she is pretty funny... Emilie’s flair for the dramatic was also shown at a young age, so she started spending her summers with Shade Tree Players and then moved to the stage of SM (or the library and then Arno Gustin). With Emilie’s talents in reading and writing, and her “okay” public speaking skills, she decided it would be a great idea to share her talents and impart knowledge on to the next generation. This fall, Emilie will be attending the University of Mary to study English Education in hopes of becoming a high school English teacher.
Nathan Marcotte – Photography Editor
You may be wondering what does Nathan do with all of his free time? Don’t worry, being involved in about 15 different clubs leaves an abundant amount of free time for Nathan, amounting to approximately 3.14159265359 minutes of spare time each week! But truly, Nathan loves his school activities and wouldn’t trade them for anything! Being involved in so many clubs presents a lot of important questions, such as, what lunch meeting should he go to? And what event should he attend when he is quadruple booked? (Little tip, if you ever run into a scheduling conflict and cannot find time for sleep in your schedule, don’t worry, because you don’t actually need it. Sleep is totally overrated!) This year Nathan was appointed the “prez” of the SM Robotics club and has enjoyed working on their robot (a.k.a. the Stinger) and spending time with the team. He also enjoys being apart of FBLA, where he has had the opportunity to learn many valuable life skills including, how much coffee does it take to stay awake at the state FBLA conference after prom and how to manage his crazy schedule (this one might need some improvement). Whenever Nathan does have a free minute, he enjoys being active outside, four-wheeling, and taking pictures. Next year, Nathan plans to major in Computer Engineering and minor in business at NDSU.

Senior Pr
With graduation just around the corner and all of the seniors getting of the teachers where they think their students will be Mr. Emmel- “After high school, Victor Fleck moved to California to be an amateur golfer. By a stroke of bad luck, he tore his ACL celebrating a hole-in-one, and was unable to golf for weeks. While rehabbing, he decided to try out for The Voice. He won a blind audition on the show, and turned all of the judges except Blake Shelton. Victor was so disappointed that he asked Blake, “Why do you hate me so much?!?” To which Blake replied, “Shoot, man, I love everybody, I don’t have time to hate.” Turns out that Victor went down in Voice history as the first contestant to turn three judges, only to be refused by Blake Shelton. Later that night, Victor met a talent scout who recognized him from the show. The scout praised his tenacity and loyalty and told Victor that a good mascot needs to be tenacious and loyal, to which he added, “How do you look in a shark costume?” And that my friends, is how Victor Fleck became “S.J. Sharkie”, the mascot of the San Jose Sharks.” Mrs. Grad- “In ten years, Sam Wilke will still be running…running as a nurse anesthetist at Sanford Hospital. Running after his wife and children…one boy and one girl. He will be living in Bismarck in a pristine home. Sam also enjoys vacations, long runs on the beach, and teaching his children to be exceptional in every sport imaginable.” Mrs. Huff- “Ten years from now, Jacob Schreiner will be the founder and president of “I am not Jimmy,” a non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of sibling shadow. All over the world, T-shirts, billboards, television and Internet ads will proclaim the rights of younger brothers and sisters everywhere to shed the shackles of an older sibling’s identity and be the person God intended him or her to be.” Mrs. Eileen Larson- “Courtney Emmil will be working full-time at a business doing photography, website design, and things of that nature. She will be in a serious, committed relationship, probably on the verge of engagement, looking towards the wedding. She will be living in a house with a white picket fence here in Bismarck, probably next door to her parents, because why not?”
redictions
ready to see where their futures will take them, we decided to ask a few in ten years. Written by Emilie Voeller and Megan Krantz Mrs. Stacy Larson- “In 2026, Logan Pieterick will be finishing his ophthalmology residency. He has accepted a job at the University of Oregon as the Duck’s team ophthalmologist. Using the engineering skills that he learned in physics class, Logan will revolutionize the sport of baseball with his invention of the Pieterick Contact. Logan will be engaged to be married in the summer of 2027.” Miss Emilee Vetter- “In ten years, Marissa Mann will be finishing up med school in a big city somewhere. Upon graduation she will work as an endocrinologist, specializing in pediatrics. I could also see her counseling young kids who have developed problems with diabetes. Whatever she chooses to do, her leadership qualities will shine and she will have no issues following her dreams. Oh, and married with a family, playing old lady volleyball league on Tuesday nights.” Mr. Jordan Vetter- “In ten years, Jenny Nagel will have graduated from NDSU with a degree in marketing and moved to California or Florida or…. I don’t know…New Jersey or something – someplace where she can do marketing-type things while also getting a tan. But then she will decide to leave it all behind and become a motivational speaker, traveling the country and speaking to other sports-related knee-injury victims, giving them inspiration that they can still live productive lives despite their season-ending injuries. She will then partner with Mr. Vetter to start The Ides of July, Inc.™, a business run by people born on July 15th who then throw extravagant birthday parties for other people also born on July 15th. Somewhere along the line she will get married, probably to an exotic foreigner named Santiago. She will also find time to put her secret love of poetry to good use and publish a book of her own poems titled My Heart is Violet, a series of love sonnets dedicated to the color purple. She and Santiago will eventually have some kids, and her life will be as golden as her New Jersey tan.”
