So, don’t wait to make your summer great. Plan a new adventure or book a return to a cherished destination today.
As we ease back into post-pandemic life, our biggest challenge might be deciding which events to attend. The smooth jazz circuit is filled with jazz festivals, concerts and cruises yearround, but this summer is exploding with a variety of options, ranging from wine country concert destinations and coastal art show performances to weekend festival getaways. To help you transform your bucket list into a to-do list, we’ve created special Jazz Concert Series, Festival and Cruise Guides featuring events through 2023. If you’re like me, you not only missed the live music and travel we love so much, but also the friendships we’ve formed over our shared passions. And, if I’ve learned anything from enduring a pandemic that put our lives under lockdown, it’s that tomorrow is not promised, and how important it is to remember that “someday” is now.

Les Sabler brings fresh vibrancy, fluidity and sparkle to his trademark super melodic, coolly infectious midtempo style.

Bold, yet simultaneously charming; edgy, yet at the same time beautiful. From Miles and Coltrane to the Brecker Brothers, the pairing of sax and trumpet defines great jazz and funk. Billboard artists Andrew Neu and Rob Zinn continue that tradition performing as A2Z. Teaming up with hitmaker-producer Adam Hawley and an all-star rhythm section, “A to Z” is their first collaborative single. Tearing a page from great horn bands, the song sizzles from start to finish with Neu and Zinn bringing their unique styles and signature horn licks.

• Playing It Forward (Hi-Falutin’ Music)
With a rich and varied range of contemporary jazz tracks featuring a diverse blend of musicians and producers from all over the country, Alexander Zonjic’s Playing It Forward merges soulful expressions and technical artistry with tracks crafted by GRAMMY-award-winning artist Jeff Lorber, including contributions from the late Chuck Loeb, James Lloyd, Paul Jackson Jr., Michael Thompson, Evan Garr and Justin-Lee Schultz. It’s Zonjic’s first album release in 10 years.
Ultimately, the record reveals an immensely talented musician and songwriter refining his craft and harnessing his raw abilities.
The South African native moved with his family to Michigan when he was 8 years old. The family relocated to North Carolina, which has a vibrantly eclectic music scene. Schultz was born into a musical family; his father, Julius, is a guitarist, and his older sister, Jamie-Leigh, is a drummer. He found himself onstage playing with his father and sister, and never looked back, com mitting to becoming a musician soon after that performance.
“He experiences music in a different way, where he sees everything and is totally conscious of every note and the relatio nship between the notes. He has so much fun and can create with such joy.”
“At the moment, I’m just trying to find my sound, discover what I like and what I want to explore. It’s about discovery at this point,” Schultz said via phone recently about his album and the direction of his music.
—Jeff Lorber
Multi-instrumental jazz prodigy Justin-Lee Schultz is only 14 years old, but you’d never know it by talking to him. The wunderkind, who was born in South Africa and now lives in North Carolina, is remarkably poised and eloquent when speaking about his music and burgeoning career. His confidence and self-assured demeanor are reflected in his music. His debut smooth jazz record, Gruv Kid (Shanachie), was released late last year to chart success and positive critical notices. He worked with numerous jazz luminaries, including Jeff Lorber, Gerald Albright, Bob James, Harvey Mason, Najee and others, to create an ambitious and satisfying set of smooth jazz that nods to pop and one of his main influences, Stevie Wonder.

“It was a great experience and sort of surreal for me because I’ve been listening to these artists from before I started playing, A chorus of praise from pros and critics ALL THE RAVE!
GodbeeKindalePhoto:
“I was into everything about him. He is such an amazing songwriter and singer and multi-instrumentalist. That’s something I want to work towards. All of his albums are insane,” Schultz said with enthusiasm. “ Songs in the Key of Life, Talking Book and other albums are incredible. There are so many different elements and changes in his music. He helped to revolutionize mu sic in the ’70s and the ’80s, and that’s what intrigues me.”
Schultz plays a variety of instruments, including piano, bass and guitar, and wrote or co-wrote four of the songs on Gruv Kid, which also has compositions from his father, James and Wonder, who is a major influence on his work. The teen said he admires Wonder’s musical versatility, songwriting genius and boundary-breaking vision.
“I started seriously about three weeks after I first started playing. I was 5, and I did my first show with my dad,” he said. “Being onstage and performing for people made me find what I’m passionate about. I had a low attention span at the time and would only practice for maybe five or 10 minutes.
By Ken Capobianco
Justin-LeeJustin-LeeSchultzSchultz
“Gradually over time, that five minutes turned into two hours, which turned into four hours, and that turned into six hours. Practice was all about exploration for me. It wasn’t like ‘I have to go practice’––I was really excited to do it because I’m always finding new things I’m wanting to do.”
One would think that a young teenager would be intimidated by working with such a stellar cast of musicians on his debut album, but Schultz said he felt welcomed and comfortable. He had to collaborate with each musician via the internet because of the pandemic.
Schultz claimed he is always looking to expand his range.
He’s excited about taking his music on the road after a long period of downtime during the pandemic shutdown. He is scheduled to play Marcus Anderson’s Jazz AND Coffee Escape on Aug. 7, and the 30th Annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest on Aug. 13 with Pieces of a Dream and Maysa. “I haven’t played many shows over the past 18 months, so I’m really looking forward to getting out in front of an audience and let them hear me,” he enthused. “It should be fun. It’s what I’ve been doing since I was 5, and it’s what I love to do. Not playing during the pandemic was tough, so now it’s going to be cool to be out there.”
“I came across the talk box on social media––I saw this guy named Mr. Talk Box using it on a Bruno Mars song called ‘24K Magic,’” Schultz said. “I was fascinated by it and did some research. I asked my dad if he could get me one and then tried it out and fell in love with it. I still want to use it going forward because it brings a different feel and sound. Hopefully, I can begin to sing without it but still incorporate it in different ways.”
While he’s working in jazz now, he believes his future is wide open as he listens to new music of all genres. “I do listen to a lot of music.
“I’m grateful being around them because I get to learn from so many musicians from different backgrounds. They treat me great, and I try to absorb as much as possible every time, whether it’s from a face-to-face conversation or just listening to their music. I always try to take stuff away from everyone I work with.”
He said he absorbed a great deal by working with James, Jonathan Butler, Pieces of a Dream and the rest of the all-star guests. “I learned a lot from them from the music production side or songwriting or how to develop solos.
Keyboard great and jazz fusion pioneer Lorber, who plays and produces on the album, has a great appreciation for Schultz and is enthusiastic about his potential. “His talent is unbelievable. He’s a genius young prodigy. When I was young, I was considered something of a prodigy, I guess, but I didn’t learn how to play at his level until I left high school and went to Berklee College of Music and had a chance to practice eight hours a day for a long while and studied with some great teachers.
Lorber said he sees a bright future for the young multiinstrumentalist and thinks he can work in any musical genre.
“I worked out a schedule with my mom and dad, but it was always balanced with school because that’s the priority. It was always school and then music. Once I was done with my schoolwork at 2 or 3 p.m., I was free to do music. School has always been important, and it’s still the priority.”
He added that, unlike other child prodigies, he has no intentions to dedicate himself solely to music, and will head to college when he graduates high school. “I would like to go to the Berklee College of Music. It’s really prestigious and someplace I think I can learn from.”
Bruno Mars is a favorite, and I love Anderson .Paak. And, Jacob Collier is great. I love how he’s himself and does new things. Of course, Michael Jackson, too. He’s timeless.”
A social media star w ith a large following on Instagram and other platforms, Schultz doesn’t need a website to reach his generation’s audience, but he will have one shortly for older generations of jazz and smooth jazz fans who might not use social media.
On the record, Schultz implements the “talk box” or vocoder into his vocals. The vocoder distorts or modulates the human voice for a somewhat otherworldly sound. It’s be en used by a number of artists across the music spectrum, including electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and Laurie Anderson, but most famously by Wonder and Peter Frampton (immortalized on his epic “Do You Feel Like We Do”).
“With his toolkit, he can do whatever he wants to do, but I just hope he’s allowed to grow up and take his time. If he needs to learn from other people beyond the amazing stuff that he’s been able to figure out on his own, it would be nice and helpful. I hope he has the opportunity to become a well-rounded g uy who has a long career as a world-class musician, which he already is––actually, he already was about two years ago.”
“I’m currently working on new music and writing,” he said. “I’m not sure what genre I’ll be doing in the future. I’m always trying to be creative by using new ideas. I’ll probably do what I know––jazz––and incorporate other things into it to develop and see where I go.” like from 2. To have them on my record is incredible. They are the nicest people.”
Schultz said he lives a normal teenage life. His friends acknowledge his success, and they take it in stride. “Most of my friends are musicians in their own field, so we all hang out. I feel comfortable around them. I also have a very good support system with my family, so that helps.”

While playing music takes up a good part of Schultz’s life, he maintains it never interferes with his education, which always comes first.

“He’s just a wonderful player, and it seems he has perfect pitch because the way he hears stuff is incredible. He experiences music in a different way, where he sees everything and is totally conscious of every note and the relationship between the notes. He has so much fun and can create with such joy. Rick Braun’s River Cruise Getaway
“I know it wasn’t that way for a lot of musicians, but I appreciated the break. I haven’t had that kind of time to relax at home, so it wasn’t like a lost year at all.”

By Ken Capobianco fter a year of downtime from touring because of the pandemic, smooth jazz guitarist Peter White is back onstage in front of live audiences with a full schedule of shows booked throughout the rest of the year. White is enjoying playing in front of his devoted fans again, but unlike many musicians who found the protracted period of idle time trying, White thought it was a welcome respite from the usual grind.
The master guitar stylist resumes his role as a prime-time jazz stage star
PETE R W H I T E
He enjoyed quality time with his wife, Robin, and daughter, Charlotte, while getting some exercise and creating new music.
“I actually found the time to be very relaxing. I’m on the road so much during the year, I was able to spend time with my family, record songs, and do things like play soccer in the park with friends. It’s great to kick the ball around,” White said recently via phone from Florida, where he was set to perform.
“What I like is I can respond to people from around the world––and that’s a very unique thing because you can be talking to someone in Peru or somewhere far away. They write very thoughtful things and show how much the music means to them. It’s quite remarkable.”
The guests on the new record include Rick Braun, Vincent Ingala, flute player Marc Macisso, a longtime friend of White who also played in Stewart’s ’70s band, and the influential jazz-R&B saxophone legend Ernie Watts.
JULY/AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021 | 25
White said one of the most valuable lessons he learned as a musician came during his first job with Al Stewart in the 1970s when he worked with Alan Parsons, the great British musician and producer, on Stewart’s seminal Year of the Cat album, which put White on the map. It helped define his now-patented guitar sound (especially with “On the Border,” a song White insists all his fans should hear).
He said he spent a good deal of time during the pandemic chatting with fans through Facebook, but the remote dialogue lacked the intimacy and electricity that can only be derived from live performances.“It’sabigdifference than interacting with fans on Facebook. I actually enjoy that to an extent, but I try to answer questions that let you know they are fans and listen to the music––they have put thought into what they are asking.
The Los Angeles resident, who has a new record due out later this year, believes there are pitfalls to spending too much time on social
Makemedia.nomistake—White is certainly pleased to be interacting with fans again because he feels that’s part of what defines him as a musician.“Ofcourse, I’m happy to be out playing live now. It’s been great to reconnect with everyone,” the 66-year-old guitarist-keyboardist said. “I’ve actually played a few shows this year, so we are gradually getting back into things. I played the Seabreeze Jazz Festival just a bit ago, “That’s what being a musician is about—that communication and interaction. It’s why we play. I missed the genuine connection with fans. You can’t get that through social media.”

He humorously recalled the period just before things shut down when he was set to do a cruise. “We were going to go out, and the choice was, ‘You can get on the ship but you might not be able to get off.’ Trust me, that was a pretty easy decision to make.” All of the smooth jazz-themed cruises scheduled for 2020 and 2021 were postponed until 2022. The good-natured artist––a charmingly discursive conversationalist––is mostly tight-lipped about his as-yet-to-be-titled new album he is in the process of finishing (he hopes to have it out this summer).
He explained that one of the most unfortunate drawbacks of the shutdown was his inability to meaningfully connect with other musicians, especially on cruises.
will be playing the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Festival on Aug. 14 as part of its 30th Anniversary All-Star Celebration. “I’m not doing a show of my own, but the festival is always a good time, and I’ve been playing there for many years,” he said. “One thing I’m looking forward to is seeing a lot of the musicians again. You get to see your friends after missing them for so long.”
“I did miss the cruises because I get to spend a lot of time with so many musicians in a perfect atmosphere. It’s so relaxed––there’s no rush. You are not in and out of a city overnight.”
“He taught me no musician is bigger than the song, and the song always comes first. That’s a philosophy I’ve followed throughout my entire career. Now, a lot of musicians, especially in jazz, might not agree—the emphasis is more on the playing, and what they bring. I will always believe it’s the song.”
and I played with Eric Marienthal at Spaghettini in Seal Beach a few weeks before that,” added White, who said he’s been fully vaccinated for HeCOVID-19.explained that there are very few things in life that can replicate the rush a musician feels when he is onstage, feeling the love from an audience. “Ultimately, that’s what being a musician is about––that communication and interaction. It’s why we play. I missed the genuine connection with fans. You can’t get that through social media.”
“There are times when I see ‘Hello’ and I think, ‘What am I going to do with this?’” he laughed while recollecting some of the more mundane correspondences he’s received. ‘Do I just say hello back?’
“After a while of doing that, I think, ‘Well, I really haven’t done anything but this. Maybe I should get to work. Social media can be time-consuming, and I think people were probably more productive before it came along. There comes a time when I have to step away fromWhiteit.”
He said it follows in the extremely eclectic nature of his past records with an expansive mix of genres and tempos. “I always like to vary them and not get stuck with one sound. It doesn’t have a theme. I was never a concept guy. Other than the Christmas records, the only album that may have had a concept was Glow, and that was about 20 years ago (2001). To me, it’s always been about the songs. You have to have good songs––that’s the basis of everything.”
“I started it awhile ago,” he said. “I got interrupted when I was asked to record songs for STARLUX Airlines. That music was supposed to be exclusively for them, but it turned out to be an album (Music for STARLUX Airlines, 2019). I picked up with the new album earlier this year and have been recording since then.”
Aug. 14
“I wish I could tell you something extremely exotic like underwater pole vaulting, but other than going out to the park to play what they call soccer here––we call it football––with my friends (including Macisso)––there’s nothing exciting.”

He does have a love of books. “I like to read. I read a lot of musicians’ autobiographies. Roger Daltrey’s is interesting. I grew up loving The Who––you have to remember I was a rock ’n’ roll fan and musician. He writes about a show of theirs I was at when I was young. It brings back so many memories.

The guitarist said he maintains a private life, but the one thing most people don’t know about him is he started out as a keyboard player when he began his career in his late teens. He switched to guitar in Stewart’s band. “Al [Stewart] gave me the nylon strings for the guitar and had me play––that changed my life. If he didn’t do that, who knows where I’d be. I might be playing keyboards somewhere no one’s ever heard of. The nylon strings are the basis of what has become my sound. You just never know what’s going to happen in life.”White said his life is mostly focused on music, and he doesn’t have different hobbies to keep himself occupied when he’s not touring, recording or spending time with his family.
“I also read Billy Idol’s biography. We are from the same generation. He grew up very close to where I come from (in Luton, England). It’s quite fascinating because we both grew up in rock ’n’ roll, but he got into punk music, and I went down a different path. I think to myself, ‘What if I got into punk?’” he laughed. “I might have been singing ‘White Wedding,’ but that would be a problem because I can’t sing at all. That’s why I play guitar and keyboards.” Before he had to depart for a rehearsal, White revealed he doesn’t have a core philosophy to sustain him during troubled times like this past year, but he did point to the 2004 film “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” which was based on Daniel Handler’s wildly popular Lemony Snicket trilogy. “It was a really dark film with Jim Carrey where bad things happen over and over, but no matter how wrong things go, there’s always a bit of hope and you have to think things will work out. They do. There’s definitely something to take from that.”
