During the summer, there are some wonderful concerts and festivals, stage plays, art shows and craft fairs, but there is nothing quite like Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, California.

While browsing works from 140 of Orange County’s finest artists (25 of which are new this year) exhibiting a variety of media, including sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, paintings, photography, handcrafted wood and furniture and more, daily musical performances add to the enchantment, especially for jazz fans.

I chose to attend Festival of Arts on Thursday, July 25, when “Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate” was happening and GRAMMY-Award-winning keyboardist-composer Gregg Karukas was performing, and to also see

When timed right, you can catch a smooth jazz concert, have a picnic, dine at the onsite restaurant, take a hands-on art class (including “Pints, Pinot & Painting”), go on a guided tour, create your own masterpiece in a workshop, do yoga, talk about art over tea, see a fashion show, peruse artistic creations, and, when inspired, purchase a treasured showpiece for your own collection. You can then cap off your outing with the magic of Pageant of the Masters, a unique theatrical production that transforms real people into life-sized re-creations of famous works of art, accompanied by a live 26-piece orchestra ... all in the same day!

For the concert, my guests and I sat at a table in the top level of the reserved seating section (which cost an additional $35 per person, based on availability). This area, left of the stage, along with the entire concert area, was remodeled in 2018 with two levels, including stage-front reserved tables and tiered general admission seating built into the perimeter on the lower level. The canopies over the venue and large eucalyptus trees veiling the stage created a cool and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy music, wine, chocolate and the picnic lunch and cold beverages I brought during that week’s heat wave.

Karukas’ natural instinct and skill for making hit songs and producing some of the best records in the smooth jazz genre were on full display that day. He was accompanied by an incredible band comprising Eric Valentine on drums, Darryl Williams on bass, Brian Price on guitar, and as a wonderful surprise, saxophonist Keith McKelley, whom I had never seen perform before (although audiences of Babyface, Usher, Bob James, Mary J. Blige, David Foster and others have).

87 years after the festival first launched, the music schedule includes series such as “Concerts on the Green” on Saturdays, and “Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate” on Thursdays.

“You picked a great night to come to the Festival of Arts,” exclaimed Susan Davis, director of special events and member services at Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach. “Greg Karukas is a wonderful performer, musician, composer and producer.”

Davis said that the attendance for their concerts is always growing. “This encourages us to continue to bring great music to our patrons. I believe music provides a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy the art show,” Davis concluded.

Music is a perfect partner for the other creative works and performances they showcase, she said. “Our amazing theatrical production of Pageant of the Masters and our extraordinary art exhibit––it is very much a part of what we do here at the Festival of Arts, shine a spotlight on a variety of art forms and that certainly includes music. Music and live music performance also brings an energy and vibrancy to the whole place.”

Now, 87 years after the festival first launched, the music schedule has expanded to include series such as “Concerts on the Green” on Saturdays, and “Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate” on Thursdays. In addition to Karukas, these series have featured Greg Adams and East Bay Soul, Slim Man, Russell Ferrante and Bob Mintzer from the Yellowjackets, and saxophonist Grace Kelly in July. The Eric Marienthal All-Stars, Brian Simpson and Terry Steele are among dozens of artists scheduled to perform in August.

“I have personally worked hard to push the whole music program forward and raise the bar on bringing great music and performers

10 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS

to the Festival and to Laguna Beach,” said Davis, who utilizes a variety of avenues to find the best-suited acts for their musical roster, including attending live performances at other venues around the Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego areas. “Social media is a great source of music sharing,” she said. “Sidemen with some of our scheduled performers is another place to find some amazing performers. As our music program has grown, I now have had some outstanding musicians reach out to me,” Davis added.

Davis is in charge of booking the bands for the entire run of the festival, which started this year on July 5, and ends on Aug. 31. She said that music was a part of Festival of Arts before she started working there 20 years ago, but on a much smaller scale.

According to Davis, the various concert series concepts evolved over time in collaboration with Sharbie Higuchi, the festival’s marketing, public relations and merchandising director, and her marketing team.

Festival of Arts is open daily until 11:30 p.m., and Pageant of the Masters starts nightly at 8:30 p.m. through Aug. 31, and is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, California. For more information, visit www.foapom.com or call 800-487-3378.

And, unlike Marty McFly in “Back to the Future,” a nod from the Pageant’s theme “The Time Machine,” most of us humans here on earth can’t travel back to the past or into the future. We can, however, live in the present and enjoy what is happening now, like Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters. Just make sure you get there before it ends on Aug. 31.

Summer is a great time to sail 26 miles across the Southern California coastline on a Catalina Express high-speed ferry. However, October is even better for genre enthusiasts because that’s when the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival turns Avalon, the island’s only city, into a smooth jazz paradise. For two consecutive weekends, Oct. 10-13 and 17-20, Art Good presents the stars of smooth jazz, starting with Thursday Nights “Unplugged” on the sand at Descanso Beach, and Friday through Sunday inside the non-gaming Catalina Casino building’s ballroom. Here are some tips for getting to and staying on the island, especially during JazzTrax, when select hotels offer a fourth night free with a three-night booking. The lineup reflects their collective input with traditional and smooth jazz, spiced with Latin jazz and classic R&B. This year’s roster includes, among others, Brian Culbertson, Terence Blanchard, Norman Brown with Angie Stone, Arturo Sandoval, Sax to the Max (Michael Lington, Paul Taylor and Vincent Ingala), The Rippingtons and Eric Benét. As with any good festival, the food runs almost parallel in appeal to the entertainment. Typical festival fare such as fried catfish, barbecue, funnel cakes, lemonade and the like are served in the food court, but at this festival, those food booths will be alongside a Health & Wellness Pavilion, an addition championed by Benoit. This space also includes a second stage for musical performances between main stage acts as well as inspirational speakers and wellness experts offering strategies for leading a healthier lifestyle. “We added this jazz festival in 2002 when many cities were cutting back on key programs, and it was our way to show our support and give our thanks to a community that has suffered through tough economic times,” said Bradford, who grew up in Gardena, a midsize suburb in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, where he still resides and continues to serve as the festival’s chair.

Held in Rowley Memorial Park, the event features 10 acts on two stages, including headliners Stanley Clarke and Jazz Funk Soul (Jeff Lorber, Everette Harp and Paul Jackson Jr.).

Plus, there will be a table for artists to sell and sign their CDs, as well as 16 food and beverage booths serving fried chicken and fish, fruit cobbler, funnel cakes, kettle corn, ribs, jambalaya, gumbo, Italian ices, lemonade and nonalcoholic* drinks; and

“Many times, people are concerned about the headliner, a big name. But, if you’re a true music fan, you take great delight in seeing these young folks. Since we started the show, we’ve made it a habit of always opening up with, if not kids, some undiscovered artist from the community or local surrounding area.”

“I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the name Rod Jones. We met in 1969 in Gardena, and he was on the committee when we started this in 2002. We lost Rod Jones in November of 2011, but we wouldn’t have this jazz festival if it wasn’t for him. He pushed me to do this.

Another highlight is “The Next Big Thing,” a contest for up-andcoming artists where the grand prize is performing on the festival’s second stage. The contestants are all unsigned jazz artists who have posted videos to the festival’s social media accounts. Whoever gets the most likes on the festival’s Facebook and Instagram pages, wins. Bradford said the contest was inspired by “discovery shows for unsigned, undiscovered talent from ‘America’s Got Talent’ to ‘The Voice.’”

Getting there

Unlike most festivals, this is a nonprofit event produced by city government. All ticket sales and sponsorships are used solely to fund it, with any profits remaining in the account for the following year’s event. “The city [of Gardena] makes not one dime out of this,” BradfordCorporateexplained.sponsors that understand the festival’s commitment to its community roots contribute greatly to its success. “This event would not be possible if it wasn’t for the corporations who’ve embraced this, like [former] vice president [at U.S. Bank] Darrell Brown,” said Bradford. “He was a guest of mine seven years ago at the festival, and halfway through the show he just got up and said, ‘I want to be a part of this.’ The next year, unsolicited, he sent a $5,000 sponsorship. He’s been sponsoring it every year.”

“Billy and I are educated musicians, and my father was the cultivator,” Eric Mondragon recalled. “He told us we would sing and play. I got an ARP Odyssey synthesizer. I was into sounds and ‘Star Wars’ and the electronic age. My brother has always been a drummer and a percussionist. He would take private lessons once a week from Chuck Silverman, who was an educator on the East L.A. circuit and taught a lot of guys.”

They perfected range and voice dynamics, crooning a hushed reverence on ballads or belting out a raspy chorus on a rock song. Latin rhythms also played a role in their education, teaching them how to adjust to complex tempos.

Reel, the third member of the band, was born in South Central L.A. but moved with his family to the South Gate suburb after his older brother was killed in an accident. As a teenager, Reel struggled until a teacher validated his talent.

“These guys love, love, love what they do. There’s sincerity there, and I think that’s what makes people react to them in such a positive way.”

The Mondragon brothers are the sons of professional musicians, and, while growing up, their East Los Angeles home was filled with the sounds of Latin, rhythm and blues, rock and soul

“I remember being blown away by their musicality and their energy,” Elliot said. “They were a total package with musicianship and the ability to read an audience and evoke a positive reaction.”

Eric Mondragon took keyboard lessons from the late David Torres, longtime keyboardist and arranger for Poncho Sanchez, an original member of Tierra and a family friend.

Elliot first met the band members when they performed years ago as part of a smooth jazz-themed cruise hosted by Warren Hill. They became fast friends.

A respect for musicianship and talent protected the young men from gang life.

Today, DW3 works with a who’s-who of smooth jazz artists. A self-titled CD, with contributions from saxophonists Richard Elliot and Boney James and vocalist Rebecca Jade, is due for release in October. And, this year, the band joined Elliot and Peter White on their West Coast Jam tour, which has dates through 2020.

“I was in trouble all the time,” Reel admitted. “But I enrolled in a stage crew theater class, and the teacher had a knack for asking everyone to sing. I grew up with R&B, hip-hop and rap. So I closed my eyes and sang ‘In the Still of the Night.’ When I opened my eyes, everyone was looking at me. After that, everyone wanted to be my friend and girls noticed me. I liked it.”

The Mondragon family had a den in their home that was furnished with a wall of speakers, a Hammond B3 organ and assorted musical and stage equipment. Jam sessions, lessons and rehearsals were part of the boys’ upbringing. Many members of the popular 1960s and 1970s fusion bands such as El Chicano, Thee Midniters and Tierra, which Billy joined before co-founding DW3, were considered familia

“Wemusic.had a family band when we became teenagers,” Eric Mondragon said. “My brother and I were still in high school, and we started performing with our parents in clubs. Our life was about music. There was never any question about who we were going to be. We loved it along with our parents.”

While growing up, the Mondragon brothers mastered seamless harmonies and the fluid phrasing of R&B artists such as Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder.

“We were tough kids,” Eric Mondragon confessed. “But we always had music, and we always had instruments. It was a release. Even the chollos, the gangsters, it would soften them up. We were mediators of the violence.”

One of the band’s favorite songs on the upcoming release is “Let’s Have Fun Tonight,” an old-school party anthem featuring Elliot on “Thesesaxophone.guyslove, love, love what they do,” Elliot emphasized. “There’s sincerity there, and I think that’s what makes people react to them in such a positive way. It’s definitely what made me react in a positive way. When you love what you do, that translates to the audience. I feel that every time I’m on stage with them, and I scoop it up as greedily as possible because it inspires me to strive to be better at what I do.”

While growing up, the Mondragon brothers mastered seamless harmonies and the fluid phrasing of R&B artists such as Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder.

The band’s captivating vocals and party-time stage presence built a devoted fan base, prompting Spaghettini entertainment director John Quigley (aka “Q”) to record DW3 live.

The effort inspired the DW3 vocalists to consider being more than a cover band, and they devoted themselves to writing and recording original music. The relationships with other recording artists they had befriended became an important part of the band’s evolution.

The single “I Got You,” featuring a saxophone solo by Albright, made the Billboard charts in 2011. Encouraged by the success, DW3

went on to release On The Floor on the Woodward Avenue label in 2013. That same year, GRAMMY-Awardwinning studio drummer Ricky Lawson was performing with DW3 and mentoring them in the process of recording songs for the band’s next project, Vintage Truth . Sadly, Lawson died of a brain aneurysm in December of 2013. DW3 dedicated their record to the accomplished drummer when it was released two years later. The CD includes a version of “California Dreamin’’ (penned by Michelle and John Phillips), a single that went on to win the California Lottery Powerball song contest.

“Ricky Lawson was a guru of studio recording. He was the drummer for Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie,” Reel remembered. “It was a treat to have him in the band. He played at my wedding. We were supposed to do nine songs with him but we ended up doing four. It became a labor of love when we took over.”

“We became a family with a lot of these artists,” Eric Mondragon said. “Our relationship with Gerald Albright and his wife and children started on a cruise; and Jonathan Butler, we have known his daughter since she was 14 years old. Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Brian Culbertson, they would be our horn section. It would be a fun jam, and that’s how we got to know these guys and build relationships withBetweenthem.” cruise ship engagements, the band played jazz festivals and toured the Middle East to support military troops. DW3 also performs regularly in Orange County at Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment for 94.7 The WAVE’s Sunday brunch and on most Thursday nights.

AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2019

Family responsibilities have been overwhelming lately. Try to limit some that burden you, and get some breathing room for yourself. You can’t be good for others without paying some attention to your own health.

Aquarius Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

You’ve been holding back from facing a problem, and it needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Sure, there may be some hurt feelings involved, but you can’t let the situation persist. It’s best for everyone that you are honest.

In an essay by Luvvie Ajayi, the author expresses admiration for Beyoncé, especially her work ethic of practicing for exhaustive hours daily for 25 years. But she also admits that no matter how good you are, there will be people who don’t like you.

Melissa Harris-Perry and Mankaprr Conteh write a piece that resembles a call-and-response format when comparing their reactions over time with Beyoncé’s musical releases. Their reactions to Beyoncé’s songs differ because of their age gap and era in which the music was released, but both appreciate her artistry.

Ylonda Gault addresses the issue of infidelity raised with the Lemonade record. “Bey is a Black woman––a Black woman who loves, and is married to, a Black man. And that’s a complicated thing. It is a layered and beautiful and rich thing. But it is more than that, because Black love is HARD.”

There may be something coming soon that will deeply affect your family or home. Keep calm and try to control your reactions. This can only help when trying to deal with the after-effects. You can take the lead on this.

This book will be required reading for the “Bee Hive” and Beyoncé’s entire legion of fans.

“Queen Bey: A Celebration of the Power and Creativity of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter”

Lena Waithe discusses her interpretations of several Beyoncé songs, including those on the album Lemonade. “Beyoncé used Lemonade to shine a light not just on herself but on a community of women of color, to tell their stories and to share their journeys.”

Libra Sept. 23 - Oct. 22

Gemini May 21 - June 21

Meredith Broussard writes, “Most of personal milestones have a Beyoncé song as the soundtrack in my memories. I listened to ‘Crazy in Love’ nonstop as I planned my wedding. When I became a mom, ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ was a monster hit among the toddler set, my son included. He and I watched instructional videos of how to do Beyoncé’s moves in her music video.”

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

Now is the perfect time to pay some needed attention to your relationship. Life can get away from us sometimes but remember what is most important to you. Put all the outside interference aside so you can really do the work.

You will soon be spending some intense time with a friend. Discovering the ties that bind you can be very beneficial. Be open with all your feelings in order to make this friendship work in the future. Remember friends are your family of choice.

You are in need of some financial assistance. Others are anxious to give advice, but make sure you really trust the right person. You can be a bit shaky when it comes to finances, so be mindful about your choice.

Elodie Mailliet Storm writes about Beyoncé’s numbers. “At the time of this essay, Beyoncé has 118 million followers on Instagram, which appears to be her platform of choice, most likely because of its highly visual nature. Beyoncé’s direct audience engagement has been a key facet in the success of her last three album releases, where surprise and coordination were important tactics.”

You normally like to keep your self-defenses up, but now is a good time to let yourself become a little more vulnerable. Try to open up to someone you care about, and let your true nature be better understood.

You have been having some problems with your job lately, but you will soon get some encouraging assistance that can change your situation. Make sure you take full advantage of that support.

Several of the writers appreciated Beyoncé as a role model for black women to admire and emulate, especially young black women. She also appeals to a gay audience. Comedian Kid Fury writes, “I don’t know how many artists know or admit this, but when nobody else will have your back it’s the gay community that stands with you.”

Taurus April 20 - May 20

Maria Brito writes about Beyoncé’s longtime interest in art. She is a collector and has used fine art allusions in many of her videos, including filming in the Louvre. She mentions how the dress Beyoncé wore to the 2017 GRAMMYs was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s golden phase.

CASHMIRA’SSTARGUIDE

Feeling overwhelmed with familyand-friend demands? Now is the perfect time to take a break for you. Think about a mini-getaway or a spa weekend. Just make sure that it’s all about you, at least for a little while.

Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20

People may be curious about your success. Feel free to share with others some of your insights, but don’t let go of your more personal secrets. What works for you may not work for others, and you do not need to be held responsible for others.

The sacrifices you make for others are becoming a burden to you. It’s time to take your own life back as a priority. Try not to let potential complaints from others stop you. You are a caring person, but selfcare needs to become your No.1 main concern.

This collection of essays addresses the impact of singer, dancer, influencer and fashionista Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. Many of the pieces are personal responses to “Queen Bee” as a cultural icon. Her performances, song lyrics and videos enrapture her audiences.

You will soon be getting it from all sides. Some of your friends are suggesting you need to rest, and others are advising you to continue full-speed ahead. Take time to make your own decisions about your future.
