Even a few years in, when the magazine became profitable enough to support myself, I kept this up for a decade or so. As the financial industries waned, I stayed at the mortgage job (sans the partner), which had now become more of a part-time gig, to take advantage of corporate benefits, including affordable health insurance (my individual plan’s premium is now nearly as much as my mortgage payment!).
8 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS
Eventually, after a few years without mortgage clients, I let my real estate and NMLS licenses expire, and I retired from the mortgage business permanently.
I’m not sure I had a clear vision of exactly where I would be 20 years after the first 16-page tabloid I initially published on newsprint 11 times a year. By 2003, it grew to a 28-pager with an enhanced glossy cover. In 2007, before I felt the affects of the mortgage meltdown and economic crash, we upgraded to a 72-page, all-glossy magazine format. And, despite downward market trends, we published between 4072 pages, on an 11-issue annual publication schedule, until 2011, when we scaled back to 10 issues.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has ever advertised with us, and recognize those companies and individuals who placed ads with us in 2019. They are listed on page 9 in alphabetical order.
Although I’ve reached the age that makes me eligible for my mortgage company pension, IRA distributions and early Social Security benefits, dare I say cheers to another 20 years?
First publication in 1999 First glossy magazine cover 2003
First all-glossy magazine 2007 Current issue
Most of us jazz fans are at an age where we have either planned well for retirement or now realize we should have prepared better. Some have sailed into retirement with all the time and sufficient funds to book jazz-themed cruises, buy VIP packages at the most popular festivals, and even make our international jazz travel dreams come true. Others budget for general admission tickets: packing picnics and searching for a comfortable spot on the lawn––often despite mobility issues––at local smooth jazz events. Regardless of where we are on this scale, all of us want our smooth jazz lifestyle to continue.Thatwas my professional goal 20 years ago when I launched Smooth Jazz News. I was preparing for my future when I stepped away from a financially lucrative mortgage-banking career to downsize into a more fulfilling and meaningful, yet modest, writer’s life.
I traded in my Mercedes-Benz for a Toyota Camry and put my personal shopper at Nordstrom on hold. I took on a partner at the mortgage company where I was working so he could handle the daytime tasks while I built my magazine business. When my Smooth Jazz News workday ended, I drove to the mortgage office to meet with clients and catch up on paperwork each night.
As the continuedeconomytodecline in 2012, we began publishing eight times per year. And, in 2014––due to increased operational and production costs, decreasing ad revenues, and the abandonment of the smooth jazz format by terrestrial radio stations––we went to a 32- to 40-page layout and a seven-issue publication year, where we have remained comfortably (and profitably) ever since.

Tickets for the 2020 New Year’s Eve Getaway––which is part of Rick Braun’s Signature Events and includes his annual European River Cruises, also produced by Braun and Riser––will go on sale in March 2020. If you’d rather be singing “Auld Lang Syne” with Braun in Tucson next year rather than belting out the blues because you missed out, you may want to make your New Year’s resolution to buy your 2020 tickets early.
The main event on Dec. 31 begins with a reception, entertainment and silent auction (which, along with other activities, raises money for autism charities and, also this year, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). To make charitable giving more convenient, Braun and his business partner Sandy Riser have implemented software for the silent auction that allows patrons to monitor and bid on their desired items from their phone.
Rick Braun’s New Year’s Eve 2019 Getaway is scheduled for Dec. 30 and 31, at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa, 3800 W. Starr Pass Blvd., in Tucson, Arizona. For more information, visit www.RickBraunNewYearsEve.com (where you can sign up to receive an email alert when 2020 tickets go on sale), or call 520-219-3381. 16 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS
By Marcia Manna GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist and radio personality Dave Koz has hosted 22 Christmas tours and produced seven Christmas albums, including his recent release, Gifts of the Season.
“There is so much meat on the bones of these songs,” Koz enthused. “They are like musical comfort food and a part of our humanity. They make us feel good and remind us of our past and our families––and hopefully good times in our lives. I always considered it a great honor to play this music at holiday time.”
The Gifts of the Season CD, available online, includes Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” “I’ll be Home for Christmas” by Walter Maurice Kaufman (aka Walter Kent), and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” penned by Johnny Marks.
“It’s a head scratcher,” Koz admitted. “We celebrated Hanukkah. I never thought in a million years that I would be doing this much Christmas. But I always loved going to friends’ houses on Christmas Eve and enjoying the festivities. The music is what made me respond to the feeling of the holidays. I always loved the music. That never wavered for me.”
The idea to pay a musical tribute to the holiday season came about in 1997 during a time of loss.
When it comes to performing Yuletide carols, Koz stays close to the classics with upbeat, soulful selections from the American Songbook.
“My dad had passed away, and I was talking to David Benoit––actually interviewing him for my radio show,” Koz said. “His mom had passed away two weeks prior to my dad. We were really commiserating in this interview about how we would move on without these very important people in our lives. He said, ‘Why don’t

Last year, Koz hosted a cruise to Australia, and it’s the first place he would think of returning to for a non-working vacation. “Everyone is so friendly,” he said. “The food is amazing, and if you are a coffee fan, the coffee is unreal. You wouldn’t think of it, but Melbourne is becoming one of the coffee capitals of the world for us coffee snobs. It was the best I ever had.”
An engaging conversationalist as well as a musician adept at soprano, tenor and baritone saxophone, Koz helps to keep smooth jazz on the airwaves with the “Dave Koz Radio Show,” a syndicated broadcast since 1994. He also hosts “The Dave Koz Lounge,” airing Sundays on SiriusXM (satellite radio), and “Dave Koz & Friends Radio,” a channel on JAZZRADIO.com.
Koz credits saxophonist Warren Hill, a participant in some of the earlier jazz-themed cruises, for inspiring a venture that has created a subculture of smooth jazz musicians and fans. “I learned the business and got to know how it all works,” said Koz, who soon thereafter hosted a cruise for five years for another promoter. “When that deal was up, we started our own entity, and we have been doing that for almost 10 years now.”
“It’s a wonderful, fun, late night. We have had John Mayer there, Bob Sagat, John Stamos, Rick Braun is a regular member, and Jonathan Butler. But, of course, Norman is the guy who holds court and puts it all together. You leave completely full and inspired. The conversation is smart and varied, and I feel blessed to be a part of that group.”
Television and radio exposure enabled Koz to build a devoted fan base that encompasses multiple generations. But enduring collaborations have equally shaped his long career. There’s television producer Norman Lear, for instance, whom Koz describes as a “huge life mentor.” Koz is one of the guests invited to a late “guys night” hosted by the 97-year-old Lear every few months. “We have wines and an incredible dinner, and we retire to Norman’s patio, where we smoke cigars and make music,” Koz said.
The decision to launch a holiday-themed tour, Koz said, came from an “organic place.” It started with a half-dozen performance dates and a group of musicians who were real-life friends, intent on sharing holiday spirit. The combination resonated with audiences.
Koz also is known for his full-ship cruise charters, and next year, more than a dozen artists are participating in the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea 2020 cruise, which visits Amsterdam and the British Isles in June. The two scheduled voyages are already sold-out, and there’s a waiting list for the next journey.
Koz has performed on stages all over the world, on land and sea, during every season.
Koz likens the cruise experience to a musical travel club. He says the smooth jazz community is made up of people who come from “the same heart space” and that translates to the guest experience. “Even if you don’t know one other person, you are among friends,” he explained. “You are brought together because of your shared love of music, and there’s a palpable feeling of unity and the power of music on those ships. I’ve been humbled by that over and over––to see how people who are completely different, young and old, gay and straight, Republicans, Democrats and every race––are bound by a shared love of music. People support each other in a way that doesn’t happen in regular life.”
“Brenda Russell came with us that first year, and the next year Peter White, and the next Rick Braun,” Koz remembered. “We just built it, and people made us part of their holiday tradition. Over the years, I ended up releasing a lot of holiday music as a companion piece to the tours.”

Koz has performed on stages all over the world, on land and sea, during every season. And, nearly every year, he plays close to home at the Hollywood Bowl. The Dave Koz & Friends Summer Horns tour was staged there last summer with pals Gerald Albright on alto

Koz started his career as a sideman working with vocalist Bobby Caldwell, keyboardist Jeff Lorber and singersongwriter Richard Marx. In the 1990s, he began recording his own material, and when he was tapped to write a theme song for the 30th anniversary of the television soap “General Hospital,” he composed “Faces of the Heart” with his older brother Jeff, also a musician. The theme aired in 1993, and remained as the show’s title track for more than a decade.
we honor our folks the way we know how––which is playing music.’ That was the first year of the Christmas tour.”
This year’s Dave Koz & Friends Gifts of the Season Christmas Tour includes GRAMMY Award-winning songstress Melissa Manchester, guitarist-singer Jonathan Butler, Danish saxophonist Michael Lington and vocalist Chris Walker. They will visit 11 states through December for a total of 22 shows in 25 days. All four artists also appear on the new album, Gifts of the Season

“I still look at it because they were so proud in that moment,” Koz said. “I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and went there when I was a kid. It’s such a thrill but also this huge responsibility. On your way to the stage, there is picture after picture of legendary artists. The Beatles. Judy Garland. By the time you walk out there you are like, ‘Oh my God, I better not screw this up.’ I think that leaving that stage after having done a good job, it doesn’t get much better than that.”

This season’s $200,000 donation provides state-of-the-art Starlight Virtual Reality headsets to 100 children’s hospitals stationed along the route of this year’s holiday tour.
Now ’tis the season for Koz to do good, not only for charity, but for his fans, as he and his friends spread the holiday spirit nationwide during his Dave Koz & Friends Gifts of the Season Christmas Tour 2019, which kicked off on Nov. 29 in Florida and concludes in California on Dec. 23.

Koz donates proceeds from the sale of his signature wine to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, for which he has served as its Global Ambassador for more than 25 years.
“It all goes to Starlight; same thing with the wine. Through our generous fan network, we’ve raised more than a million dollars for Starlight to continue its mission, something for which I’m very proud.”

“I don’t know much about wine, except I like to drink it,” Koz quipped. “Our partner is Whole Foods, and over the years, we have tried different varietals. They said it would be a great summer wine, and they were right. It sold-out, and they reordered it.”
“It’s inspirational. Not only are you drinking good, you are doing good,” Koz enthused.

Authors Alan Paul and Andy Aledort have created an unusually personal history of the famed guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Hundreds of interviews are included that provide intimate recollections with family members, band mates, fellow musicians and fans. Vaughan is considered by many to be one of the great guitarists of all time.

There is an important conversation you need to have with someone close to you, and now is the perfect time to have that sit-down. Organize your thoughts so you can be clear. Take a deep breath, and go for it.
You will soon be presented with an opportunity. Be careful to not bite off more than you can chew. This project will take a huge amount of effort, but if you decide it’s worth it, jump in and do your very best.
You may enjoy doing most things solo, but now would be a good time to enjoy the socialization of working with a group. The companionship of others can make for a more successful completion of some of your projects.
You’ve been hesitant about your ability to succeed in a particular field. It’s time to test yourself. So buck up, and finally just go for it. You will need some help, but just persevere, and you just might surprise yourself.

Some exciting adventures are beckoning, but remember you have responsibilities at home. If you can’t turn down the traveling, make sure there is someone at home to step in and help take care of business.
Be careful with all the family requests coming at you. You will be asked to contribute both time and money to various folks. Though you want to help all of them, take a step back before you find yourself promising more than you should.

Life is currently presenting a large list of unusual circumstances. Take a breath when dealing with these occurrences. Make use of all your personal contacts to find a way to make your way through these troubling times.

Eventually, Stevie was able to play with several of his blues idols, such as B.B. King, and he established a band he called Double Trouble. His penchant for wearing kimonos and feathered hats were thought to be homage to his rock idol, Jimi Hendrix. Stevie’s blues playing became less focused on traditional blues, and he became more interested in a blues-rock genre.
Try to work with others. You may be fighting back bad feelings that were generated in the past, but now it’s time to take a step forward. Do you want to make a difference? Then accept the assistance of others.
You have some new ideas you are exploring. Try not to get too obsessed with this journey, and make sure you listen to other colleagues or friends. You should exercise some control, but the effort will be worth it.
It is time to stop probing into your partner’s past. All this digging can create feelings of distrust that do not need to be there. Everyone has a past, including you. Concentrate on what you have together now and how you can make things better.

Family responsibilities are important to you, but take time to give yourself a break. Some of these projects will be ending soon enough, so try to keep as positive as possible. There is light at the end of the tunnel, so try to laugh a little.
He started playing local clubs in Austin and Dallas, often for very small paychecks. Saxophonist Jim Trimmier said, “He just boogied. Everybody was older than him in all his early bands––and he made them all. Even at that age, there was no false notes. He was always true to the music.” Early on, Stevie was known for playing loud and was always tinkering with the equipment to meet his requirements.

You have a busy life, and you have been taking care of business, home and job. Try to carve out some time for yourself. An invitation will be coming your way; don’t hesitate to accept it. There are some surprises in the future.
Vaughan’s youthful obsession with the blues came naturally, as his older brother Jimmie was becoming a major name in the Texas blues scene. Jimmie Vaughan remarked, “If you want to be a blues guitar player, there’s no better place to grow up than Texas.” As a 14-year-old, Stevie haunted local clubs and was sometimes allowed to play. The recollections of many describe his complete dedication to his music and how he was rarely seen without his guitar.

“Texas Flood: The Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan”
By Alan Paul and Andy Aledort St. Martin’s Press • 2019 • 368 pages • $29.99
Stevie married early, and the relationship was tempestuous. “Their relationship was tumultuous, dysfunctional, passionate, violent,” Newhouse said. Stevie and his wife were heavily into drugs. Through it all, he became more successful and recognized by rock heavyweights like David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. Eventually, Stevie had to face his drug demons, and, while in London, he finally faced the issue and consulted a doctor recommended by Eric Clapton. He went through a monthlong rehab. Record promoter Harvey Leeds said, “He was very very serious about his rehab. Stevie carried around two bags like a doctor would carry, filled with his recovery books.”
At the time of his untimely death, Stevie had been living a sober life for a few years. Vaughan died in a helicopter crash Aug. 27, 1990, after returning from performing a concert with Clapton. Although he was only 35 years old at the time of his passing, Stevie’s legacy lives on.
Soon, his drug consumption and erratic behavior affected his personal relationships. He was famously known for not actually having a real home. He was an original couch-surfer, which made him a little hard to locate at times. He showed up for the shows, but often just barely. Band mate Jackie Newhouse recalled, “Despite it all, Stevie was a really sweet, funny guy and pretty easygoing as a bandleader; he never told me what to play.”
