Since April 2020, I have been to only one concert, one festival and inside one grocery store.
Entering any building––other than my own house and that of my next-door neighbors, a medical office for my COVID-19 vaccines, or to attend the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival (where all patrons were required to be fully vaccinated and wear masks)––simply did not happen. My errands were limited to a 1.3-mile radius from my home: to the drive-thru pharmacy, ATM, car wash, and occasionally, Starbucks (always masked at the window, of course). During those 18 months, I filled up my car with gas only twice, but called the Auto Club to jump my battery more than a dozen times. A corner of my dining room table that was usually covered with concert ticket stubs, boarding passes, parking vouchers and restaurant receipts from my pre-pandemic life were now replaced by a pile of brown paper bags, evidence of grocery deliveries. All in my earnest attempt to avoid the coronavirus, which has so far been successful.
The irresistible lure of a Brian Culbertson show at Thornton Winery
However, when Thornton Winery announced that Brian Culbertson was kicking off its 2022 Champagne Concert Series, I did not want to miss his first West

Therefore, I’m looking forward to an exciting smooth jazz summer with more concerts at Thornton Winery, South Coast Winery’s Rhythm on the Vine Jazz Series and the Eric Marienthal & Friends benefit concert for High Hopes (featuring Euge Groove this year). And, since Art Good is continuing his fully vaccinated policy for all attendees of the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, I’ve already made my hotel reservations and booked a seat on Catalina Express for the 35th annual event in October. To help you navigate your smooth jazz summer, we’re publishing our Annual Jazz Concert Series Guide in this issue, beginning on page 32. We hope to see you out and about, enjoying all the unique and scenic venues this genre has to offer, whether they are enveloped in art festivals, steam train rides to concerts in a forest, or the culinary and spirit delights of wine country shows.
JULY 2022 | 9 Coast performance in three years. And, the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer was featuring guest saxophonists Marcus Anderson and Marqueal Jordan, who are two of my favorites. Plus, vocalist Lindsey Webster, another fave, was the opening act. Luckily, I was eligible for my second COVID-19 booster three days before the show. I was so excited by the anticipation of going out in the world that I forgot I hadn’t visited my hairdresser, sat in a pedicure chair, or had my eyebrows waxed since October 2021 in preparation for my last public outing. (By the way, I calculated a savings of nearly $4,000 by forgoing those luxuries during the pandemic). So, I quickly took care of that personal business, too. On June 4, Craig Collier (our distribution manager) and I loaded up his SUV with the latest issue of Smooth Jazz News and drove 50 minutes north of San Diego to the Temecula Valley Wine Country. The weather, sunny and around 70 degrees during the day, was cool enough at sunset that I pulled my hair out of a ponytail and wore it down for once. Seated at a table near the stage, we settled in with a bottle of champagne and a cheese plate, then were blown away by the incredibleWebster’sentertainment.vocalsadded to the sweetness of a breezy spring day. And when Culbertson and his band took the stage, it was pure … powerful … party vibes from the moment Chris Miskel smashed his sticks on his drum skins and Eddie Miller hit those head-bopping-worthy notes on his keyboard. Also exhibiting their individual music skills, bassist RiShon Odel, guitarist Darnell “Showcase” Taylor, trumpeter Michael “Patches” Stewart, Anderson and Jordan paraded around the stage, occasionally surprising the audience with choreographed dance moves, all in sync and led playfully by Culbertson.
After more than two years into this global pandemic, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the coronavirus will be circulating indefinitely. And, because I want to resume my life, especially the live music portion, I continue to mitigate my risk by keeping up with vaccinations, wearing a mask in public (even outdoors) and physically distancing as much as possible, while washing my hands frequently and carrying hand sanitizer wherever I go. With these precautions, I feel fairly safe attending public performances.
It was such a fun and fulfilling evening that it reminded me of how essential live music is to our well-being. I was so inspired to continue this musical roll that I attended the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival at the new Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on the Embarcadero two weeks later. (Read more about that in my Jazz Buzz column, on page 28.)

From darkness to illumination: a very personal story with a bright outcome
By Ken Capobianco Keyboardist-composer-producer Gregg Karukas has followed his muse in numerous directions throughout his 40-year professional career. The pianist, who co-founded The Rippingtons and won a Grammy award for Best New Age album with Omar Akram for their collaboration Echoes of Love, has become a smooth jazz favorite for his wonderful gift of melody as a composer and eloquent, diverse keyboard stylings. Karukas is ready to explore new musical avenues with his soul-jazz project, The GK Soul Jazz Party, which will breathe new life into soul-jazz classics and eventually play his original compositions. It’s all part of a transition period for the artist who experienced personal tragedy when his wife, Yvonne, passed away in 2018. He has emerged with a new appreciation for life and renewed vigor for his music.
“Much of it now is soul-jazz standards that people would recognize,” the Los Angeles resident said. “The group is designed so we don’t even need a rehearsal. I have an East Coast band and a West Coast band with a rotating cast of musicians. I can travel to New York and call some guys who are great players and send them the song list. We’ll just show up and wing it.”
This new venture comes on the heels of Karukas’ 2021 album, Serenata, the first solo piano recording of his career. The beautiful, expressive work features solo piano interpretations of songs from Brazilian artists Milton Nascimento and Dori Caymmi, with whom Karukas once played as a band member. The set also included reimagined versions of the pianist’s own compositions.

“About three years ago I started to play Hammond organ. Once COVID hit, the time allowed me to focus on the Hammond,” said Karukas via phone recently about his shift in musical focus. “Playing that is a whole different concept than how I always played keyboards and multi-keyboards, and I decided to start GK Soul Jazz Party. I enjoy playing these songs I love.”
He has begun playing various club gigs with Soul Jazz Party, initially focusing on some of his favorite songs before incorporating his own compositions. He plans to record a Soul Jazz Party album in the fall for a release next spring.

“Life is good, and I’m establishing new relationships and traveling as much as possible within the limits of COVID because it’s here to stay,” he said. “I know quite a few people who have lost their spouse or loved ones, and what I’ve learned is you get a completely different perspective on life. It’s a gift in a way to have empathy for those who are suffering and find the ability to enjoy life every day.
“It’s a process because the grief is always there, but it’s more about gratitude. I would say that’s my lesson. You move from grief to gratitude, and the more you train your mind to do that, the more time you spend grateful for life.”
Gradually over time, you will be doing more smiling.”
“I didn’t consider whether it was commercial or not. I focused on the melodies and harmonies. It really resonated with me, so I put it out there and let it have a life of its own.”
“The way things happened with Yvonne and me, we had a fantastic period right around 2011 to 2013,” he explained. “I was heavily involved with Dave Koz as his musical director, and that was a lot of work for his cruises, but it was exciting and fun. Yvonne got to go on every cruise.
“I took a break to record Soul Secrets (2014), and it was a successful album. But then Yvonne came down with cancer, and music took a back seat, which of course, I was fine with. We could deal with what was going on. “I was able to say no to gigs because royalties were coming in. After Yvonne passed away, I knew I needed to take time away from music and just recover. I was very happy all those phases happened because you are supposed to mourn and retreat.”
All of this activity and change come after a period when Karukas took some time away from music during his wife’s illness and after her death. He needed time to grieve, reflect and consider his path forward. The father of two sons, Alex and Stephen, said this period helped him refocus and gain a deeper perspective on existence.
He said he spent his time in nature going camping and enjoying the beach. Soon, COVID hit, and a new period of isolation ensued, but he gradually resumed playing music and did livestreams with Rick Braun and others. It renewed his creative vision. Now, he is moving forward with a deep sense of compassion for humanity.
“It had been 30 years since I played some of these songs—I played with Dori from 1991 to 1995,” he explained. “I sat down and went through a bunch of songs on the piano and thought, ‘I wonder if I can do some of these on solo piano? And, would it sound good enough to release?’
He took a breath and reflected. “There is so much suffering in the world—so many people with cancer and COVID and other things, we sometimes get numb. But honestly, it’s OK to cry. You never know what little trigger will make you cry, but then you just smile.

“Alex is working as a film composer with Christopher Lennertz and graduating to co-composer. He’s now working on movies and television shows,” Karukas beamed.
“Stephen studied at Indiana University for percussion and composition for his undergrad work, but for his master’s studied computer science,” Karukas explained. “He loves music and writes music for marimba and chamber music, but after he did an internship at Amazon, he got offers from Amazon and Google. He will be moving up to Seattle to work for Google. That’s very exciting.”
An empty nester since 2016, Karukas sold the family home a year after his wife’s passing. He downsized and bought a new house with views of the valley and sunsets in Thousand Oaks, California, where he lives with Jasmine, a cat his wife nicknamed “Cancer Cat” during her battle with the disease. The feline has a musical pedigree of sorts, as she is the sister of the cat saxophonist Euge Groove adopted from the same shelter. As the 66-year-old musician begins a new chapter in life, he clearly understands that often when we step through darkness, we inevitably find illumination. And right now, Gregg Karukas’ light is burning bright. For more information on Karukas, including his complete tour schedule, visit www.karukas.com. continued from page 11

Very few artists in any musical genre have ascended to prominence as quickly as jazz guitarist-producer Adam Hawley since his bestselling 2016 debut album, Just the Beginning, which spawned the chart-topping singles “35th Street,” “I Don’t Mind” and “Joy Ride.” Over a six-year span, the prolific Hawley has released nine No. 1 singles from his first four albums while becoming a staple on the smooth jazz touring circuit.
“The music I’m into and the artists who influence me resonate with contemporary jazz fans, so I think my music has resonated with them also.”
By Ken Capobianco
Spanning genres, making connections
ADAM HAWLEY
Hawley’s eclectic musical approach of mixing accessible grooves with superb melodies and tight, inventive arrangements is on full display on Risin’ Up, his most upbeat and inspired effort. It relies heavily on horns to augment his lucid guitar work and the dynamic Hawley said his eclectic approach owes a lot to his background before he went solo and recorded his first album. He played with a wide array of acts once he got firmly established as a sideman after moving to Los Angeles from Portland. rhythm section. Clearly influenced by R&B and funk, the songs are designed to get bodies moving and lift spirits.

“There are four or five songs here with horns—the material just was leaning that way. I was thinking of a much more full sound. This was a bit of a reaction to my third album, Escape, which was more reserved and moodier. Risin’ Up was a fun direction, but I’m sure the next record will be different again.”
“The music I’m into and the artists who influence me resonate with contemporary jazz fans, so I think my music has resonated with them also,” Hawley said. “As early as high school and college, I was listening to George Benson and Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown, so I’m a true fan of the genre. But I also cut my teeth on old-school R&B, too, like Earth, Wind & Fire, Brothers Johnson and Michael Jackson, so those influences go into my music, guitar styling and writing. It looks like that speaks to audiences. I make the music I want, and people are digging it.”
“The notes I’m playing on the guitar, that’s further down the list when I’m playing live. I’ve been playing for 30 years, so I have

Hawley, who has a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Southern California, wrote or co-wrote nine of the 10-song set (also included is a cover of Demi Lovato’s “Tell Me You Love Me,” featuring the guitarist’s wife, Kat, on vocals). The integration of prominent horns was a bit of a departure for him, but he feels it was a natural progression for his art, and they suited the spirit of the songs.
Hawley said his eclectic approach owes a lot to his background before he went solo and recorded his first album. He played with a wide array of acts once he got firmly established as a sideman after moving to Los Angeles from Portland.
“Before I started making any records, I had a lot of experience working in multiple genres—straight-ahead jazz with Natalie Cole and Manhattan Transfer, R&B with Brian McKnight and Lalah Hathaway, pop with Jennifer Lopez or the Backstreet Boys. And, then I was lucky to work with elite contemporary jazz artists like Brian Culbertson and Dave Koz. That all goes into the creative pot, and a goal of mine on each record is to give the listener a lot of bang for their bucks and hit a lot of moods and change things up.”
He added that his past work with different artists also informs his vibrant stage show, which draws in new listeners and has fans coming back for “Withmore.Jennifer Lopez, we played in front of 20,000 people a night in all the NBA arenas, and played large venues overseas. The first few times you are in awe, but then you adapt, and you learn you need to reach each individual person and make them feel like you are connecting with them, and that’s my goal.” He hesitated to think and proceeded to elaborate.
The multi-instrumentalist’s latest album, Risin’ Up, is another successful release, garnering both critical acclaim and commercial success. The Portland, Oregon, native and Los Angeles resident believes there’s a basic explanation for his music’s appeal.
“Of course, that doesn’t mean to put your head in the sand—there are too many important issues out there—but it’s good to catch your breath. Everything in it, including the title, which made for the debut single, was geared toward the upbeat and high energy. The second single, ‘Gotta Get Up,’ which just hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts, reflects that energy.”
The record was conceived as an antidote to some of the troubled times people have been experiencing over the past few years.
One of the earmarks of his music is the way it blends and straddles genres––the songs have a pop accessibility but are rooted in jazz, R&B and funk. While the nuanced musical details and expert modern production are best appreciated with headphones, the tracks sound great on the dance floor or on the highway with the windows rolled down on a warm summer night.
“I wanted this record to be a reprieve for not only the listeners but myself too,” the humble, gracious musician said. “2020, then 2021, and now 2022 have been tough for a lot of people—very difficult—so my hope is if people listen to the record all the way through for what, 40-45 minutes, that can be their escape.
“As early as fifth grade, I played trumpet in concert bands, so horns have always been in the forefront of my mind, and many artists I’ve enjoyed over the years have horn sections,” he said.
Fort
While his solo career is burning white hot, Hawley also keeps busy with his production company, which has been key to the success of artists like Kim Scott, Blake Aaron and Lisa Addeo. In mid-May, there were five Hawley-produced songs at the top of the Billboard Smooth Jazz National Airplay chart. He also will be playing a number of collaborative shows with vocalist Lindsey Webster throughout the year.

“‘Success is when preparation meets opportunity’ applies— it’s true. If you stay ready, then you’ll be prepared when the doors open.”
With his new album holding steady on the charts, Hawley is already at work on a new solo record and a Christmas collection. If that didn’t keep him busy enough, he also teaches a class each week at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California.
The hardworking, determined artist who gets up at 5 in the morning to hit the gym before helping his 13-year-old son get ready for school, and then getting into the studio, doesn’t think there’s a big mystery behind achieving one’s goals in life.
that confidence. The No. 1 thing I’m ‘thinking about is connecting with the fans. Are they receiving the vibes I’m going for? The musicianship has to be there, of course, but it’s also about the fan experience and their reaction when they walk away from the show.”
Hawley’s wife, Kat, is an integral component of his stage show, and now they are working together on her debut record. “I feature Kat on every album, and she’s featured on my show,” the guitarist said. “With the exception of the dates with Lindsey, my wife will be on all my shows this year––she’s a big part of it. Anyone who hasn’t seen her is in for a treat. We also enjoy seeing the world together and visiting cities to taste the local cuisine or seeing whatever we can.”

At 37, Hawley is part of the next wave of contemporary jazz musicians. While most of his peers in smooth jazz are older, he said there’s no generation gap when it comes to making music. “Music is the common language, so we all have something to talk about. Look at Justin-Lee Schultz. He’s 17 and fits right in. Music knows no age. “I’ve been overseas and jammed with people who don’t speak English––we had a conversation musically. What’s refreshing about this genre is it’s so welcoming. I can say that every single legendary artist has pulled me aside and said, ‘Man, I’m really happy for you and excited about your success.’ I don’t seek out compliments, but everyone from Najee to Dave [Koz] to Gerald [Albright] and on has been incredibly gracious to me.”
“I owe so much of my career to my experience at USC and in high school classes, so it makes sense,” he explained.

GERALD ALBRIGHT
According to Albright, that’s just a reflection of some of the songs that inspired him early in his career. “Funk is a big part of my sound and goes back to my earlier albums. This is an extension of my early influences like James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, Parliament Funkadelic and George Clinton.
The veteran saxophonist has little to prove at this point, but he continues to tour with determination and create new music. In April, he released a three-song EP, G Stream 2: Turn It Up, a successor to the popular 2020 EP, G Stream, which yielded three top-charting singles.
After 42 years in the music business, the saxophonist is still having fun and feeling the love

Most of all, it’s still fun, and I feel love when I’m performing onstage and in all other facets of what I Whiledo.”Albright’s canon since his first solo release in 1987 has explored numerous shades of jazz, soul and funk, the versatile 65-year-old musician is in a playful mood with his new music—both of his recent EPs lean toward bottom-heavy, old-school funk.
“Gavin is a little over 2 years old,” Albright said. “I first met him in April 2021. My daughter, Selina, and her husband drove from Texas, where they were living, to here in Colorado to surprise us.
erald Albright has secured his place as one of contemporary jazz’s most revered and successful artists over the past 42 years, thanks to his bestselling solo albums and galvanizing live performances that have influenced a new generation of jazz artists and made him a recipient of a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

The lead single, “G-Wiggle,” off his new EP was actually inspired by a different source, though—his grandson.
“You hear that in my music, while at the same time, it’s reflecting my experience of living and breathing Cannonball Adderley or Grover Washington. So, it’s a blend of all of those experiences.”
The saxophonist added that he had another small thrill recently when he was forwarded an interview with Clinton, in which he referenced their friendship.
“And this kept happening. I thought, ‘Man, I have to write a song called ‘G-Wiggle.’ It was totally inspired by breakfast time in the kitchen nook of our house.”
“That’s my escape from the fast lane of traveling, and I’m finding more and more musicians who play golf, so even when I travel, I can play. I fly in a day or two early and play a couple of rounds before I do a “I’veshow.toured with Jonathan Butler, who is also an avid golfer. We would plan our tours to include golf in conjunction with the live shows and any other commitments.” He said that his love of golf stems from his deep affection for nature and the outdoors.
“It came out of nowhere,” he admitted. “Being recognized and singled out by the president of our country is just about as big an achievement as you can have.
Albright found himself bonding with Gavin over cereal, and a song was born. “His favorite treats were Cheerios with blueberries and no milk. When I brought it to him, he would just wiggle with excitement every time he took a mouthful,” the musician laughed.
“The company is called Glynis’ Products and is online as Glynis’ Kitchen. So, I decided to do maybe three or four songs at a time that I really feel great about and market those,” he said. “If I do it this way, people will really embrace the three songs as opposed to releasing 10 and have six or seven songs get lost in the Albrightshuffle.”achieved a career milestone last year when he was surprised with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his legacy as a musician and a citizen. Unfortunately, because of COVID, Albright did not receive it at the White House, but he already had visited the White House twice before during former President Bill Clinton’s administration.

They are grown and all have lives of their own, but we come together and ask what do we all need to get to the next phase of things?”
After 42 years in the music industry––35 of those as a recording artist––Albright, who has been doing studio work on bass for other musicians, has no problem staying motivated and“Thebusy.music and my family keep me motivated. Being able to play music and be healthy is a blessing. I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “I’m content with the ride I’ve been able to go on all these years. I’m a lot more selective about my touring. I’ve started a series here in Colorado at the Lone Tree Arts Center in my neighborhood called ‘Gerald Albright Sessions.’ We book different acts. We’ve had Jonathan Butler, Keb’ Mo’, Oleta Adams and have Take 6 booked. I’m not one of those guys who likes to sit dormant and let time go by. I like to be in the thick of things.”
He believes his music serves a higher purpose, and his goal is to inspire others and help them deal with any struggles in their lives. Music is a mission.
“Selina has a single just out called ‘Dishonest Smile’ that’s on the charts,” he said with pride. “She’s in the studio now, working on new things, and she’s very much pregnant with her second child. She moved back to Colorado, so she lives eight minutes from me, and we will be able to see both of our grandchildren whenever we want to.” He was equally effusive about his son. “Brandon is the videographer of the family. He does my photos and video footage, as well as a couple of my album covers.”

After she exhausted any possible solutions to challenges she was experiencing in securing her usual venue, a short swim away at Embarcadero Marina Park North behind Seaport Village, she began exploring options at The Rady Shell.
James and her husband, Richard Phetteplace, are supporters of not only smooth jazz artists and events, but they are also patrons and donors of the San Diego Symphony, which developed and manages Jacobs Park. The Rady Shell is the first permanent outdoor venue ainbow Promotions hit the jackpot with a new waterfront venue for their San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival: The recently constructed Rady Shell, the centerpiece of the 3.7-acre public Jacobs Park located behind the San Diego Convention Center.

In addition to the scenic setting on the Embarcadero Marina Park South with harbor and downtown skyline views, The Rady Shell offers a large, technologically and acoustically advanced stage; state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems; three large Planar CarbonLight LED Displays (two IMAG side screens and a media/LED wall behind the performers) to project stage activity or programmed images; terraced seating with unobstructed views
“Rick and I have been major supporters of the San Diego Symphony since we moved downtown over a decade ago. Last year, we saw the completion and grand opening of the new Rady Shell. It occurred to us that it would be a great place to hold the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival,” James said. “I contacted the Benoits and suggested they might want to consider a tour of the new outdoor structure, as it seemed to me to have all the artist and guest features desired of a music festival locale. I put them in touch with the right Symphony contacts, and the rest is history.”
JULY 2022 | 29 continued on page 30 in the Symphony’s century-long history, which they also rent out to other promoters on their non-concert dates.
Private donors fund Rady Shell
In gratitude for James’ and Phetteplace’s contributions, the San Diego Symphony dedicated a bench at Jacobs Park in their honor.
However, as perfect as this venue seemed, the only dates available were the same weekend as Brian Culbertson’s Napa Valley Jazz Getaway. Many fans, such as James and Phetteplace, were still holding VIP tickets from the postponed 2020 San Diego Smooth Rick Phetteplace and Marilyn James sitting on a bench at Jacobs Park dedicated to them by the San Diego Symphony
“The funds to build the $85 million Rady Shell were provided by private donors, and no government funding was involved,” James explained. “Since my husband, Rick, and I have no children, we wanted to leave a legacy for our San Diego community. Our donation is relatively small compared to lead donors, but we are very pleased to have helped support the construction of The Shell.”
30 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS continued from page 29 Jazz Festival, which would be valid for this year’s event. Although the dates had not yet been announced, James assumed it would be in July. The couple had also attended Culbertson’s Getaway since its inception, and they already booked their trip for June 8-11, 2022.
“We received quite a few compliments,” Benoit said. “They expressed how beautiful the venue was, the overall production, great sound, lighting, videos. Everything was first-class. Everything went well, and the Rady team was wonderful to work with.”Benoit said that The Rady Shell has such a comprehensive organization in place that there was much less for her to tend to. Most everything they needed to handle could be accomplished by Benoit and a smaller staff, including her husband, Ozzie, daughter Blair, son Christen, administrative assistant Lauren Horton, and several others.
“We didn’t have to do all of the leg work we usually do when we go into a venue: build the stage, fencing, hospitality, order port-a-potties, etc. We needed less staff and didn’t have to use any volunteers because they have their own front-of-house staff, ticket takers, ushers, people giving directions and handing out our lineup, etc.,” Benoit explained.
Everything was first-class From all accounts and customer feedback she received, praise was high and complaints were minimal.
“We brought our own production people, video and camera crew. They did the content for the big screens. We programmed everything from the time the gates opened, making sure each show starts on time and ends on time.
“Givingoften.up-and-coming artists a platform to be seen and heard is important to me,” she said. “That’s why I booked Lin Rountree, Julian Vaughn, David P. Stevens and others. Giving back and allowing musicians to play in a market they don’t get to play in, and giving them exposure, that’s what we believe in,” said Benoit, whose father, Al Williams, is a bebop drummer and the retired founder of Rainbow Promotions.
“Basically, the promoter is responsible for the artists and the primary marketing of the event,” said Victoria Andújar, director of venue rentals for The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center. “The majority of the staffing and infrastructure is provided by the Symphony and thus included in the rental.
“Brian [Culbertson] was supposed to play our event, but when we had our festival on the same weekend as his, he had to cancel with us,” Benoit said. “We didn’t want to stay out of the market any longer. We hadn’t produced a festival since 2019 due to COVID. People are counting on us. We didn’t want to go against Brian or the week after Newport, but that’s the way it happened,” Benoit added.
“Our marketing team did a great job of getting the word out,” Benoit said. A good lineup also helped sell tickets. Headliners on Saturday included Jonathan Butler and Boney James on the five-act bill, which also featured saxophonist Najee; Brass Attack BBZ with trumpeters Willie Bradley, Johnny Britt and Rob Zinn; and Kings of Groove with David P. Stevens and Tony Exum Jr. Sunday’s attendance was slightly smaller, with saxophonist Eric Darius hosting and headlining, along with a roster featuring vocalist Maysa, saxophonist Jessy J and pianist Brian Simpson; Down to the Bone; Chieli Minucci and the Special EFX All-Stars; and trumpeter Lin Rountree with bassist Julian Vaughn. Benoit said that one of her goals is to always book rising stars and East Coast acts who don’t get out to the West Coast very
Plus, the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Jazz Festival was scheduled for the prior week. By the time Benoit secured the venue and finalized her lineup, those festivals had already been on sale for several months, minimizing her potential ticket-buying base.

Tickets went on sale and the lineup was announced in early April, two months before the event. Surprisingly, on Saturday, June 11, the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival nearly filled the 4,718-seat venue to capacity.
“For this particular event, Sodexo Live! partnered with Rainbow Promotions to develop a custom in-seat dining menu.” Food and beverage table service were available to nearly 1,800 patrons within the front few sections. Meals included muffuletta sandwiches, Blaisburgers (with andouille remoulade), summer corn salad (with cotija cheese and jalapeno), boudin rice balls (with andouille sausage and garlic), Faroe Island salmon, chicken scarpariello (with peppers, onions and potatoes), banana bread pudding and coconut cake. All other guests could purchase food and drinks from the dining pavilions in Prebys Plaza, which offered items such as New England-style shrimp rolls, hot dogs, tacos, pizza, salads and soup (coconut curry chicken soup, corn chowder and vegan chili). Plus, wine, cocktails, beer, soft drinks, coffee, tea and hot chocolate were available in both locations.
“The San Diego Symphony provides in-house sound and lighting equipment, house managers, baseline security staff, event support staff (engineers, etc.), custodial services, box-office staff, parking and traffic attendants, on-site EMT, utilities, Local 122 stage crew, and, the Symphony can assist with sourcing backline, if needed,” she added.
Benoit is currently reviewing available dates for the 2023 San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival. However, according to Andújar, the Symphony has first right of refusal on all dates during the busy summer months. Due to the Symphony’s schedule, which generally runs from the end of June through September, it probably won’t be in July.
“We contract a mix of about 40 private events and ticketed concert rentals each year,” she said. “I work closely with our artistic planning office to identify a few dates for outside rental clients.”
Food and beverage table service Food and beverage are provided by a partnership with The Shell Provisions and their local partners. These on-site restaurants and food carts include Chef Richard Blais, Urban Kitchen, BIGA, Lola 55, Achilles Coffee, Kitchens for Good and Minocqua Popcorn. According to Andújar, the menus are a collaboration among their restaurant partners, Sodexo Live! and the Symphony.

However, there weren’t any fried fish vendors, lemonade stands, a funnel cake booth or other typical festival fare. Benoit said that next year, she plans to work with catering to modify their menus even more to include items more to her clientele’s liking, such as fried chicken and catfish.
With Benoit’s main objective of continuing to bring great music to San Diego in an exceptional atmosphere, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park certainly contributes to that goal. And, it quite possibly has set the gold standard for future festivals of all genres.

“We’re not striving for mediocrity. We want to be the best, and provide patrons with a wonderful time and experience,” Benoit concluded.
The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park features state-of-the-art stage, lighting and sound systems. There are also dining pavilions and plenty of permanent restrooms (far left).

Aquarius Jan. 20 - Feb. 18 Hmm. You feel you need some recognition for helping with a challenging situation. Unfortunately, those involved have not understood all your work. You might try to drop a few subtle hints, but let it go if they don’t pick up on them.
Try not to spend all your time taking care of the home and others. Take a deep breath, and concentrate on yourself for a change. Pay attention to what matters to you personally. Your goals need to include what you need as well as the needs of others.
Your ambition is one of your best qualities, but do not let it drive you astray right now. Before you commit to that new position, make sure you do your research. Sometimes the shiny new thing is not really the best choice.

Readers will delight in a variety of topics, ranging from a discussion about the importance of a Rolling Stone cover to the impact of MTV on the recording business. Questlove also provides background to the advent of the synthesizer and the way it became such a part of recording. He discusses the overwhelming impact of Michael Jackson’s epic record Thriller to the huge wave of disco music and the clubs it created, using their historical intertwining to illustrate his ideas. He gives an interesting review of his interpretation of Steely Dan’s famous song “Hey Nineteen.”
You have had some challenging times with a co-worker, and now you are faced with a situation that requires you to work together again. It is time to have a face-to-face discussion to address all the old problems before you proceed.
“I am not a trained historian, and I am not pretending to be one,” he admits. “I have tried for accuracy in all things, but I can say without hesitation that I am sure I have fallen short here and there or fallen off to the side: a fact that requires explanation, an interpretation that provokes disagreement. That’s why I urge you to read critically.”

We all have special music or songs that remind us of events, so our personal history is combined with the sounds of our past. Questlove investigates those types of histories as well as how certain music is referred to by newer music. History of music includes packaging, record-storage albums that held the 78 rpm records, 45 rpm singles, theme albums, cassettes, CDs and, now, streaming.
The 51-year-old Philadelphia native is definitely serious about the book, but that does not mean there isn’t any humor here. There are many humorous and sarcastic asides. He includes personal anecdotes, including one regarding Bill Withers. “Withers was my first true idol. I think of his history as intertwined with mine somehow. His debut album, Just as I Am, came out in May 1971, four months after I was born. When I first heard his songs, either on the radio or from my dad’s record collection, I knew that I was hearing something different. His music, and his vocals, were as down to earth as the earth itself.” Withers declined the author’s request to work together before he died.
Your crew is starting to get a little carried away. You need a respite from all the activities they plan. Always being out and about can leave others close to you feeling excluded. Take a break from the heavy activity, and tell your friends you are cooling it for now.
Questlove has been a part of music from his earliest memories, and he has done myriad jobs collaborating with other musicians. He wrote the soundtrack for the History Channel’s 2016 reboot of “Roots,” as well as other films and television shows. He is also a well-respected DJ. His funny story about deejaying for then-President Barack Obama’s White House is worth the read. His opinion of history? “History should matter to all of us at all times, because we’re all in it.”
