Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, California

Another fan favorite is Thornton Winery’s Champagne Concert Series in the heart of the Temecula Valley Wine Country. For 30 years, this family-owned vineyard has presented jazz concerts on various weekends from spring through fall. Now, they have added Friday night shows offering a variety of musical genres and cover bands. The entertainment, gourmet-dining options at Café Champagne, wine tastings and tours have become so popular that they have paused their wedding business.

And, for a day of great music with a mini-festival feel near downtown San Diego, Jazz at the Creek is adding a new Creek Festival Village concept that will include a redesigned vendor marketplace filled with fashionable clothing, jewelry, art and food. Plus, fashion shows with styling tips will be featured during intermissions. Of course, there is also a VIP option, with table seating, wait staff and access to the VIP cigar and cognac lounge. The good news is that a nearby North San Diego County venue, Pala Casino Spa & Resort, has booked another season of concerts and events at their outdoor Starlight Theater. And, they also just completed construction on Tourmaline Pools at Pala. This adults-only pool complex features five heated pools with in-water seating, waterfalls, daybeds, fire pits, whirlpools, two expansive hot tubs, 14 luxury cabanas, fireplaces and a fullservice, poolside cafe and bar. Patrons can enjoy a day at the pool, followed by a night of entertainment. Live jazz is a wonderful experience by itself, but when you pair it with delicious cuisine, refreshing wine, premium spirits, gourmet chocolate and the added ambiance of visual art, a vineyard or a coastline, it magically transcends into an epicurean heaven. In Southern California, there are several venues presenting concert series that incorporate much of this delightfulness. Festival of Arts is on the top of that list, offering daily music along with its weekly “Concerts on the Green” and “Art, Jazz, Wine and Chocolate” at the newly remodeled Laguna Beach venue. At these shows, smooth jazz artists perform on a stage enveloped by a kaleidoscope of mosaics, unique glass creations, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics and more. Plus, the crowning jewel, Pageant of the Masters, features incredible re-creations of works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. The theatrical performances are choreographed to an original score by a live orchestra, with engaging narration, intricate sets and sophisticated lighting in an outdoor amphitheater behind the art show, and are held nightly, July 7-Sept. 1. Another casino, Sycuan, in East San Diego County, is presenting an eclectic lineup of music and comedy acts. Unfortunately, I’m sad to report that the owners of one of my other favorite venues, Grand Tradition Estate & Gardens, have made the opposite decision, choosing to discontinue their Jazz & Wine Festivals this year. Instead, the focus of the 30-acre, floral-and-foliage-filled venue with lush walking trails and waterfalls in Fallbrook, California, will concentrate on their signature wedding business, private events, botanical tours and dining.

The San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival is returning to America’s Finest City at Embarcadero Marina Park North with a stellar lineup of fan favorites, up-and-comers and a few acts that don’t appear very often on the usual festival circuit. Genre enthusiasts can enjoy music, bay breezes and tasty festival fare (fried fish, funnel cakes and lemonade anyone?) in a postcard-perfect setting. Views of yachts, sailboats, Jet Skis, Navy ships, Coronado Island and the downtown skyline are visible from nearly every seat within this jetty-inspired venue next to Seaport Village. This year, all VIP tickets were purchased within weeks of going on sale. Fortunately, as of press time, there were still general admission tickets available on the picnic-perfect lawn area for Saturday and Sunday, and a few reserved seats on Sunday.

Or, if you’d like to experience another aspect of San Diego history, head to Old Town for some excellent Mexican food and culture.

At some of the restaurants, you can even watch women making tortillas in the window! Of course, if you’re in the mood for margaritas (or other alcoholic beverages), don’t drink and drive. Instead, hop on the trolley.

In addition to the scenic surroundings and impressive talent roster––which was chosen by festival producers Kim and Ozzie Benoit of Rainbow Promotions, and event sponsors Kathy and Willie Payne of Payne Pest Management––the timing of the festival is also a bonus. Gates open at 11 a.m., and when the music ends at 7 p.m. there is plenty of time to venture out into the nearby Gaslamp Quarter. The historic 16-block area offers a variety of places to have a nice dinner, unwind with a drink or craft beer, or simply take a walk through this bustling entertainment and dining district filled with Victorian architecture, sidewalk cafes, rooftop lounges, nightclubs, a few boutiques and ice cream shops.

His song “Daybreak,” the title track from his solo debut in 2004, became a popular sensation thanks to its recurring appearance on the hit NBC comedy series “Community.” His work has also been featured in films and numerous other television shows, including “Happy Endings” and most recently, “Fresh Off the Boat.”

The R&B-heavy collection features songs from KC and the Sunshine Band, Earth Wind and Fire, The Crusaders, Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. The group also put its spin on songs by Billy Strayhorn, Paul Simon, Jay-Z and The Spiral Starecase, whose “More Today Than Yesterday” has often mistakenly been credited to Chicago thanks to its wonderful horndriven buoyancy. We took music primarily from the ’70s with a few exceptions. We didn’t turn the music completely on its head, but we tried to add something fresh and a little bit new while staying true to the name Summer Horns. So, it’s real summery, and that means upbeat.”

he barbecues are flaming , the beaches are crowded, and backyard music is blaring. It must be summer, and it doesn’t take a marketing genius to realize this is the perfect time for a new Summer Horns record from an all-star smooth jazz ensemble. On this second release, Summer Horns II From A to Z, the reconstituted band created by Dave Koz features saxophonists Richard Elliot and Gerald Albright, along with the addition of trumpeter Rick Braun and introducing trombonist-vocalist Aubrey Logan. Together, they turn up the beat while diving into a varied collection of vintage songs ranging from jazz to R&B to pop and hip-hop––yes, hip-hop. It is spirited music upbeat with Summer

made by savvy superstars that’s geared to putting smiles on faces and getting bodies in motion.

“The focus was to try and make a really upbeat record built for parties and that summer feeling,”

You don’t want to choose overplayed tunes that every wedding band hauls out for summer receptions, and you don’t want to get too obscure in the search for eclecticism. Elliot said the search for songs was wide and deep, as each musician had a say in which ones the quintet of horns would record. “We had a bunch of conference calls where we all got together, and we put our list of songs together. They went into a pot, and each one of us gently pushed for the songs we thought should be on it. So we all had a fair amount of input. I’d say it was a very democratic, reasonable process that was often fun. There isn’t a song which we all didn’t feel good about. I think we all got what we wanted in the mix of tunes after about four conference calls.”

“I’m working through rough ideas, and we’ll see what kind of shape they take. On Summer Madness, I had a definite direction in mind, which was to pay tribute to funk and R&B from mainly the ’70s and fold in Latin funk and Afro-funk––it definitely landed on the funk side of things. I wanted to explore how jazz and funk were fused in the ’70s and how it ended up on pop radio. That’s what I was trying to do, but now I’m sure I’ll continued on page 22

JUNE | JULY 2018 | 21 different dynamic––not just in the end result sound, but each individual musician plays differently,” the articulate and analytical, yet laid-back, Elliot said. “The key element about collaborations is they bring about different things in you than how you normally would play by yourself or with someone else, so consequently with these folks, things change for me. With Dave, Rick and Gerald, three musicians I have a lot of history with, I know I’m going to play a particular way, but with Aubrey, who I only met last year, I’m going play in a different way. A tenor saxophone and trombone together are not as typical as say, tenor and trumpet together, which is a real classic sound.” He takes a moment to consider the combination before continuing. “The blend of those two instruments comes from back in the bebop days. The sound of a trombone and a tenor is a classic sound in another way. It was made more popular by The Crusaders. So anytime you put different horns together, it’s going to create a different dynamic, which can bring out things in each player, and hopefully collectively you create a unique sound, and that’s what I think we did Elliot,here.”who over the course of his 30-year recording career has become one of the most popular acts in smooth jazz, has worked with Braun, Koz and Albright many times before. While Logan, who is best known for her work with the band Postmodern Jukebox, is a relative newcomer, she’s a budding star on the rise. Sometimes, one of the problems for many superstar collectives is there’s not enough room in the studio to fit all the egos, but Elliot insisted that wasn’t a problem with producing Summer Horns. “I’m a big believer that when you are working on collaborations, if you have to work too hard at it, you are doing something wrong. A lot of times there can be issues with egos, but what’s kind of unique about this genre of music is I’ve never really run into an ego issue with anyone. I’m not saying it’s not out there, but it’s not been a problem for me. I’ve found with this genre of music, there seems to be a very nice camaraderie between musicians.” He added that he feels that the camaraderie carries over through the whole smooth jazz community. “I do think there’s a great rapport between the musicians, the fans, and even the radio stations––whatever is left of them. And that’s a camaraderie you don’t find in every genre of music. “To be honest, most of us are just happy to have a gig. Those of us who have been lucky enough to have been doing this for decades now, just do not take it for granted. Just to have the opportunity to play music in front of people and have that be our livelihood is pretty special, and know I feel very fortunate to be able to do it.”

The 58-year-old tenor saxophonist is currently between records after his last chart-topping homage to ’70s funk and R&B, Summer Madness, landed in 2016. He said he has not begun work on a new album yet, but is considering directions and concepts for songs he hopes to write later this year. While he anticipates he’ll have a new record to deliver by the first quarter of 2019, everything is much too tentative for him to nail down a timeline.

I’ll discover the direction as time goes by.” Elliot is a bit of a renaissance man in addition to being a top-shelf musician. He’s a tech wizard who built a multimillion-dollar company, Global Cash Card, which he recently sold. For years, he balanced his musical and business interests without a hitch. For now, he’s turning his attention fully to music, but he doesn’t rule out getting involved in another tech company down the road.

“Whatever an artist chooses to do as their music has to come from a genuine place—that’s what makes the best music. Never second-guess what your audience necessarily wants or what radio might want. If you try to do songs because if you think it’s going to get airplay, well, that approach doesn’t work. And I’ve tried it many years ago. What connects with people is the music you are sincere about. I honestly believe if you live by that, you can’t go wrong.”

The licensed pilot, who is in the process of building a plane, has also built a studio on his 10-acre farm in North San Diego County, where he and his wife, Camella, and their five children live along with a variety of animals, including alpacas, pigs, horses and goats. He seemed quite pleased to have the new home studio, as it will change the modus operandi of his recording process.

When discussing his overarching vision for making music, Elliot spoke with clear purpose and determination. “I have to feel like every time I do a record or get onstage, I’m trying to push myself a little bit further and evolve a bit more because it’s a constant learning experience. Even the most amazing virtuosos on the instruments will tell you they are always involved in a quest to try and master the instrument, but you never quite master it.”

He took a moment to consider the philosophy that guides him creatively.

“I managed to juggle the two interests without much of a problem, but to wear two different hats is a challenge. The guys in my band would always joke about it because right up until we had to go onstage, I’d be working with my laptop. Then I’d go onstage. When I got offstage, I was right back on the laptop,” he said, laughing. “For now, the focus is going to be my music. And that’s plenty for sure.”

“I built the studio, and the next record will most likely be recorded there. I used to have a studio when I lived in L.A., but this was something I’d been planning to do for a while,” he said. “The idea is I can actually go into the studio in my pajamas and work. Or I don’t have to at all. There’s something nice about that. Whatever my motivation factor is, I can just act on it without any problems or planning. We’ll see what kind of dynamics ensue when I can just get out of bed, get some coffee and walk into the studio and start working.”

He added that he needs to remain true to himself as a musician and continue to make the most genuine music he possibly can. “I want to be as sincere a musician as possible and never do things as if you are going through the motions. You have to be playing what you are actually feeling and make music you are honest about. And that means, at the end of the day, being a sincere artist. You have to be sincere about what you are playing.
