I’ve seen several limousines, a few Bentleys and a Rolls-Royce parked at Thornton when I’ve attended smooth jazz concerts there, but never a helicopter. Who knows, maybe hot air balloon travel will be next in Temecula Valley Wine Country transportation?

On July 7, the crown jewel, Pageant of the Masters, lights up the Irvine Bowl behind the arts show. With a live orchestra and narration, art comes to life through amazing human re-creations of works of art with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in original pieces. This year’s Pageant theme, The Time Machine, inspired by science fiction and steampunk fantasies, travels around the globe into the past, present and future to thrill, humor and awe the audience with beautiful music and extraordinary living art under the stars.
It’s no secret that summer is the best time to be a smoothjazzfaninSouthernCalifornia: You can canseenearlyeverygenrestarperformingataconcertorfestivalsomewhere.But,didyouknowthatyouarriveatapopularvenuebyhelicopter?
I was surprised to see one landing on Thornton Winery’s parking lot in Temecula, California, last month. A very generous and appreciative daughter chartered the flight to take her mom to brunch there on Mother’s Day.

Meanwhile, 75 miles west in Laguna Beach, Festival of Arts kicks off on July 5. This 87th annual art show features 140 top Orange County artists exhibiting sculptures, mosaics, ceramics, photography, plein air paintings, fine jewelry, glass creations, wood works, watercolors, functional pieces and mixed media. Daily music offerings add to the ambience. Two of the most popular are the weekly Art, Jazz, Wine and Chocolate on Thursdays beginning July 11, which features GRAMMY-winning keyboardist-composer Gregg Karukas on July 25; and Concerts on the Green each Saturday (except Aug. 24, when the Celebrity Benefit Event is held) beginning July 13 with saxophonist Grace Kelly, and includes a performance by The Eric Marienthal All-Stars on Aug. 17.
Patrons of Thornton Winery’s popular Champagne Concert Series will have to wait a little longer to see if such an occurrence happens during their visit (unless they stop by for lunch, brunch, dinner or wine tasting), because it is starting later than usual this year. The first show, featuring The Brian McKnight 4, is scheduled for Saturday, July 20, with Jeffrey Osborne closing out the season on Sunday, Oct. 20.

I always plan my visits to Festival of Arts on a day when I can take in all of the exhibits, enjoy a jazz concert (preferably one with wine and chocolate!) and stay for Pageant of the Masters. Each time, I leave
feeling like a little kid bursting with excitement and amazement after experiencing the newest Disneyland ride for the first time. And, with all of the special programs Festival of Arts offers, families can load their kids into an SUV on a day when the youth art classes are happening, so the adults can also enjoy it all.
A dream of mine is to arrive on a Thursday and stay through Saturday night, so I can spend every waking minute at this venue viewing art, chatting with the artists, listening to music, attending a class, taking a tour, sitting in on a demonstration, corking my creativity with a wine-and-paint workshop, and leaving inspired for more.
Plus, if I did that, I’d only be 27 miles away from Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment in Seal Beach, where I could enjoy Sunday brunch and a performance by WithDW3.traffic so backed up, I would love to travel by helicopter. However, I think I can make this dream triangle trip from Temecula to Laguna Beach, then over to Seal Beach by driving my own car. In the spirit of Brenda Russell’s song, “Get Here,” my advice to anyone wishing to summer in Southern California’s smooth jazz scene is, “I don’t care how you get here, just get here if you can.”

“We anticipated that it would be well-received, but this is the largest capacity boat we could secure for this type of event,” said Kim Benoit, president of Rainbow Promotions, who produces this festival with her husband, Ozzie, and their grown children, son Christen and daughter Blaire. “We wanted to offer something a little different to our patrons,” she said of the three-hour dinner cruise, which also features a DJ and includes a glass of Champagne upon boarding, then a buffet dinner, two glasses of wine, plus a top-deck cigar area.

After announcing this inaugural sailing aboard Inspiration Hornblower in late January, which is hosted by Eric Darius and features performances by flutist Althea Rene and vocalist Selina Albright, they sold all 500 tickets by April 4.

With the scenic festival venue intact, and a variety of food, beverage, dessert, arts, crafts and jewelry vendors onsite, they’re all dialed in there. And, for those active folks who are counting their steps on Fitbit, it’s a nice long walk from the underground parking structure to the venue. For everyone else, buses will shuttle attendees to and from a designated spot outside of the parking lot on Harbor Drive to the festival entrance.
“Signage for regular shuttle service will be posted visibly that includes shuttle times and frequency, as well as signage on the shuttles themselves for clear identification to patrons,” Benoit explained.

With the festival ending at 7 p.m., patrons can extend their good times with San Diego nightlife or dining. That is, unless they wear out their dancing shoes and are filled up on catfish, barbecue, funnel cakes, kettle corn and lemonade. In either case, it sounds quite wonderful indeed.

“And, when ADA patrons arrive at the festival entrance, they will have access to a shuttle or cart to transport them to their seating areas,” added Benoit.
Plus, there will be signage throughout the venue directing fans to the CD-signing booth, where they can buy artists’ CDs, and take selfies with and get autographs from the performers.

He has gone on to become a smooth jazz star, but the now 36-year-old musician feels like he’s just getting started with the release of his latest album, Breakin’ Thru , on his own record label, SagiDarius Music. The veteran artist, who will be hosting The San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival in June, has found a new lease on his creative life by declaring his independence and taking full rein of his musical direction.

The music on Breakin’ Thru is much funkier than his previous six albums, with a deeper bottom—the bass lines will rattle sound systems—and it captures the kinetic energy of his live show, which has made him a fan favorite on the live smooth jazz circuit. It touches on different genres and nods to hip-hop for younger generations, which Darius, one of the youngest smooth jazz headliners, hopes to reach. “My music has always been a combination of so many styles and genres from jazz to R&B to hip-hop, rock, funk, gospel, reggae, and I wanted to make music that appealed to all generations.

“This is the first album I’ve released on my own record label,” he said. “That was a huge factor on the concept of this album––the sound, the style and my approach. With every album, it’s like a blank canvas when I start, but now there was a different sense of creativity and freedom that I never experienced before.
Breakin’ Thru , Darius’ seventh solo album, marks a transition and a reboot of the versatile saxophonist’s career, as he seeks to reach younger audiences and push beyond the limits he felt were constraining him when he recorded on major, high-profile labels. The Los Angeles resident considers the title of his new album to be an apt summation of his music and career trajectory.

“Labels are all about commercial appeal, and they are not necessarily focused on the artist themselves, and what they want to say creatively. Unfortunately, they just focus on the numbers and the business side of things.

“It was important to make music that was true to myself. I’m inspired by so many types of artists, from Prince, Stevie Wonder, Bruno Mars, Jay-Z and Bob Marley. I wanted to bring all those sounds and elements into this project.”

“The whole mindset and paradigm of albums have changed,” he said, pragmatically. “Before, it was all about the sales and numbers. People were selling a half million albums left and right, which is almost impossible now unless you are Taylor Swift or Beyoncé, so albums have become more of a marketing tool to connect with people and get them to come to one of your shows. It’s about bringing more attention to your brand. That’s clearly not what albums were before. Obviously, at the shows, we sell tons of CDs, and that’s the selling opportunity.

While saying he was thankful for working with labels that helped him launch his career, he admitted he felt they often held him back creatively.

The new album is also his first with all originals. He decided to eschew the covers formula he had relied upon previously. “I’ve done albums in the past with covers of popular songs that I thought the younger generation would relate to, like music from Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo, Mary J. Blige—but I’m a songwriter, so I don’t need to keep doing other people’s music. There are elements in my music that people, who listen to those artists I covered, can relate to. So, I wanted to give people the full range of my work as a“Asmusician.Iwaswriting the songs and recording, I realized this was the most exciting recording experience I’ve ever had. There was nothing holding me back, so I could explore.”
“Sometimes artists have to sacrifice who they are to appeal to the labels and the people who represent them. This time around, I didn’t want to have any of those things holding me back, and I wanted to give my fans 110 percent of myself on this project. I studied business in school—I wanted to be in on the marketing and the branding because, in today’s landscape, the business has changed so much. Artists have so many ways to reach fans through social media and technology. I wanted to embrace those things.
“Social media is the lifeblood of my career. It’s crucial to get the word out about performing and helping me interact with the fans one-on-one when I’m doing shows. I’m active every day.
“I’m always posting things, answering questions or responding to people’s posts. I get a direct pulse from the people, who are buying tickets, to get a feel as to how they are responding and what they want. You can develop a strong relationship between fans and the artist. That’s a beautiful thing.”
But that’s as far as it goes when it comes to sales. The days of selling millions of albums are gone.”
SagiDarius Music is not just a vehicle for his own projects. Darius intends to use the label to nurture young talent and grow a business. “The vision is to sign other artists. I want to develop new, upcoming talent and give them a platform to release music.”
He understands, though, that the concepts of producing albums and selling records to develop a career are anachronistic in today’s music world, where approximately four pop artists— Taylor Swift, Drake, Beyoncé and Adele—may have healthy album sales. Albums are now either an expensive hobby for many veteran artists or a means to draw listeners to live shows.
A big-hearted artist, Darius realizes that he has a higher purpose than just ruling music charts and trending on Twitter for all the wrong reasons, like too many musicians. “It’s not just about the songs and notes. It’s about the message and impact you make on lives. You give people hope and happiness and something to be excited about. That’s what it’s all about.”

“I hosted last year, and the response was so overwhelmingly positive that they wanted me to host it again. I said ‘absolutely yes.’ It’s a lot of work and makes for a long weekend, but there’s nothing like being a host and being able to interact with the fans—from the very first note that’s played to the very last note that’s played. I’m all about engaging the fans, so I’m truly excited to host and headline.”

Darius continues to be heavily involved in furthering music education in the country’s schools. He speaks to students about music and developed his “On a Mission in the Schools” campaign to inspire young people to get involved with music or develop careers.
The New Jersey native, who grew up in Tampa, Florida, started his career at age 11 when he toured the world with Sonny LaRosa and America’s Youngest Jazz Band. He believes it is vital to nurture young talent and give back. “I am still involved heavily with On a Mission, where I talk to kids in schools. I love speaking to the next generation about following their dreams and keeping music alive in the “That’sschools.still near and dear to my heart. I want to do a lot more of it. It’s important to allow kids the opportunities to express themselves through music because the arts are obviously the first thing to get cut when there are cuts in budgets. I’m a product of a music program, and I traveled around the world with an amazing jazz band, so I’ve taken it upon myself to pay it forward in these schools.”

Darius is a genuine road warrior, who spends most of his life performing, and he’s grateful to his fan base for helping his career flourish. “The wonderful thing about this genre is they are the most loyal fans of all genres across the board. They are so supportive. Where a lot of genres are dependent on radio or whatever, the lifeblood of our genre is performances. I do over a hundred shows a year, every year, for the last 20 years. That’s always been the driving force behind my career.”

The saxophonist, who is a prominent endorser of Cannonball Musical Instruments, explained that he is looking forward to hosting this year’s San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival for the second time.
The newly married artist doesn’t have to worry about trying to balance his personal life with his work like so many musicians who struggle with life away from family. “My wife, Lynne, is 100 percent supportive of my career. She is my tour manager now and travels with me,” he said. “So, we are together 24/7, and that’s brought us closer. She’s a part of my music business and team, and she helps me reach higher levels. Getting married and having a partner I can trust and rely on has been one of the best things to happen to me. It’s been a blessing.”

In 1995, Page and fellow Zeppelin member Robert Plant got together and kicked off their successful “No Quarter” tour. Fans still craved hearing from their once-favorite band. In later years, Page continued to curate the Led Zeppelin legacy regarding new compilations, etc. Over time, he has emerged as a respected and admired elder dean of classic rock ’n’ roll.

Page was a respected studio musician for some of the biggest bands in the ’60s when Eric Clapton suggested the guitarist replace him in the Yardbirds. Clapton went on to Cream, and Page joined the Yardbirds. They had some success, but when the Yardbirds broke up, Page went looking for another band. That’s when Led Zeppelin was born.

Zeppelin crashed into the music scene with the misnomer of heavy metal, when that had not been their intention. They seemed to stand in stark contrast to the increasingly soft rock emerging from L.A.’s Laurel Canyon. Their success was huge. The band developed a reputation of being aggressive as years passed. During their 1977 tour, there were physical altercations. Bill Graham recalls, “What I didn’t like about Led Zeppelin was that they came with force. I had heard stories from other cities about how they muscled promoters to get better deals. How they had shaken them down for money. I had heard about the ugliness of their security.”
Page had created a mysterious persona, which was engendered by his flirtations with the occult and his fascination with Aleister Crowley. For a time, Page was allured by the Isis Urania Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a late 19th century group of occultists whose members had included the Irish poet W.B. Yeats and Crowley. In later years, after purchasing a unique home in London, Page opened a bookshop called the Equinox Bookseller and Publisher.

You might recognize the guitar riff to the ubiquitous “Stairway to Heaven” written by Jimmy Page, which broke radio traditional song limits by being more than eight minutes long. Chris Salewicz’s well-researched biography of Page is jammed with behind-thescenes recounts of this rock legend. The biography was enhanced by copious interviews with friends, Page himself and others within the music business. Nothing is spared regarding the general debauchery lived by Page and his fellow Led Zeppelin band members.
The band had demanded funds to get drugs before their appearance at a Graham-produced show. Drugs were a big problem with the band; Page was using heroin. Led Zeppelin’s nosedive was inexorable. Now mired in heroin addiction and alcoholism, Page’s days of greatest creativity with the group were behind him.
Well known for his large collection of guitars, he played a Gibson Les Paul Standard, which he named “Number One” during his years in Led Zeppelin. His velvet suits and ruffled shirts were also part of his image and were maintained by his staff.
