Smooth jazz has curated the majority of my adult travel. Over the years, the allure of genre-themed concerts, cruises and festivals has led me to parts of the country and world I’d never been to before.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO Smooth Jazz

The Great Waikoloa Food, Wine & Music Festival prompted my first trip to Hawaii. In addition to enjoying great musical, culinary and spa experiences at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, I also ventured out into rainforests, waterfalls, volcanoes, lava-laden shorelines and black-sand beaches on the Big Island. With so much to do, I unfortunately didn’t have time to fit in Dolphin Quest, an on-site program that allows guests to swim and interact with their resident marine mammals in the resort’s private lagoon. However, I saw several schools of dolphin swimming alongside the Catalina Express high-speed catamaran I rode to my first outing to Catalina Island. As a native Southern Californian, I’m still surprised that I was in my late 30s before I made the two-hour drive to Long continued on page 10 Beach and 26-mile boat ride to Avalon, thanks to an assignment to review the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival. And, I’ve returned every yearWaterfrontsince. and scenic ocean venues are a large part of the smooth jazz lifestyle, especially cruises. Although I had cruised before, my first voyage to the Caribbean was on Norwegian Cruise Lines’ SS Norway for its smooth jazz-themed cruise. Several more seafaring festivals inspired me to sail on the 2011 Dave Koz & Friends at Sea full-ship charter to Alaska. I had toured Alaska on land during my pre-jazz life, but the experience on Koz’s cruise eclipsed that trip. Nothing compared to waking up to the majesty of Tracy Arm Fjord. Nestled between 3,000-foot-high granite walls, the narrow, twisting slice of sparkling, emerald-colored ocean weaves through the Tongass National Forest for roughly 35 miles. The shoreline is sprinkled with waterfalls created Hilton Waikoloa Village in Kona, Hawaii

Back in my hometown, after a two-year hiatus, the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival returns to America’s Finest City for its fourth annual event in June. This year, it will be held at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, a stunning new waterfront venue with an acoustically engineered stage, terraced seating, permanent restrooms and views of the harbor, downtown, yachts, the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and Coronado Island. With all of the exciting traveling I’ve done, it will be a treat to enjoy the beauty of what’s in my own backyard, and share it with other smooth jazz-loving friends. I invite you to check out our Annual Jazz Festival & Cruise Guide in this issue and plan your next smooth jazz adventure.

However, my first rail adventure was actually on the 2002 JazzTrax party train to Sunriver, Oregon. I booked a deluxe sleeper car on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight for the 26-hour excursion from Los Angeles to Chemult, Oregon. The scenery was as spectacular as the camaraderie and entertainment. Daytime views encompassed stretches of the Pacific Ocean and shoreline until the terrain transitioned into lush forests, back country meadows and the occasional rustic farm house with grazing livestock.

In Skagway, we rode the train through the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, admiring spectacular views of Glacier Gorge and White Pass, while Koz and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro hopped from car to car serenading all of the passengers.

10 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS fare to the dining car, where I ate breakfast with the artists and fellow smooth jazz fans. This was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime prelude to a wondrous weekend at The JazzTrax Winter into SpringWithFestival.somuch travel involved in the smooth jazz lifestyle, regeneration and pampering is always a plus. So, I was pleasantly surprised to discover some of the best spas in the world in Wisconsin and Colorado during my first visits to those states. I booked so many services at the Aspira Spa at The Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, that I missed a few shows during Jazz on the Vine. And, while attending Earl Klugh’s Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, I spent most of my non-concert time at The Spa. I indulged in a Swedish massage, a deep-tub soak in coconut milk and mineral salts, an 18-shower-head hydrotherapy, and a lemon and lavender hand and foot scrub. I also left the resort for an afternoon to visit Garden of the Gods, a magical park featuring towering sandstone and red rock formations against a backdrop of Although COVID-19 caused the cancellation of Klugh’s 2020 event, at press time, his team was in the planning stages for his 2022 Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor. Koz’s 2020 and 2021 sailings were also postponed due to the pandemic, but he’s back at sea with two, sold-out, full-ship charters to Amsterdam and the British Isles in May. And, Jazz on the Vine, which is also happening in May, sold out in March.

Sadly, the Great Waikoloa Food, Wine & Music Festival and Bermuda Music Festival are no longer. The SS Norway was sold for scrapping in 2006. And, JazzTrax producer Art Good discontinued his party train excursions and pared down his event production to only the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, which is celebrating its 35th year in October.

After a gourmet meal in the formal dining car at sunset, gypsy violin and guitar duo Willie and Lobo boarded the train in Santa Barbara, followed by guitarist Joyce Cooling and keyboardist Jay Wagner, who joined us in Oakland. After they settled in, we spent the evening in the Parlour car listening to them jam and tell stories.

philosophical, I did want to create something people could find comfort in. I’m always going for that, but never more so than on this record. I think a lot of people understood how important family is––that’s one of the things I got out of that time. I really appreciated having a healthy family and friends.”

Simpson is a consummate craftsman of melodies, which are the foundation of the songs on All That Matters. He effortlessly moves from fleet R&B to soulful grooves to complex yet accessible jazz to breezy, romantic songs over the course of 10 songs.

“With each record, I work on them for over a year. Melody writing happens within a short time, but if I take time off between a project, say, three months to go on the road, I find when I get back, I have to work to return to where I was. It’s like working out and strengthening a muscle.”

“Every time I start out on a new record, I’m aiming to make music that touches people through melodies and rhythms that reaches something within them,” Simpson said recently via phone at an airport while waiting for a flight to his next gig in Orlando, Florida. “Part of that record was a reaction to what was going on in the world—I wrote it during the lockdown— and it’s a bit of a celebration of life.”

All Matters

Pianist-composer Brian Simpson has been making music for four decades and established himself as a wonderful jazz songwriter. His keen melodic ear has sustained him through 10 solo albums and made him a staple on the smooth jazz touring circuit. He’s had this success after a rewarding stint in the pop world that yielded his first No. 1 pop single as the co-writer of Surface’s 1991 hit, “The First Time.” And, he has extensive tours as a sideman for such artists as Janet Jackson and the late Teena Marie. Last year, Simpson released the inspired and supremely melodic All That Matters in the middle of the pandemic. It was the perfect album for troubled times—spirited, soulful and deeply felt. Music to help listeners transcend grim reality or transport them to a colorful, imaginary world of melody and love.

“To be a professional musician requires some innate ability, and then lots of practice, and the same goes for being a songwriter. It’s like a tool you have to sharpen.

He explained that the apt title was the last thing he came up with for the album because it summed up what he thought about while the world was in distress. “I didn’t conceive the record to become that, but several of my friends got sick, some died, and have died since then. Seeing that, and what was happening around the world, was a lot to take “Withoutin.getting

The 60-year-old Illinois native said he works hard to keep his songwriting chops in top form and craft the finest melodies.

It’s been 27 years since he released his debut solo record, Closer Still, after working steadily as a go-to sideman for a number of prominent jazz and pop artists. One of his goals has been to avoid repeating himself as a songwriter on the follow-ups to his first album. Many artists end

That

“You can call my music now smooth jazz or contemporary jazz, but the bottom foundational drums and bass aspects are pretty much R&B, and that’s all I’ve ever done,” he said.

“Honestly, none of us know, so what am I waiting for? I have to live and create now. It’s one of the things we learned from the last few years if we didn’t realize it already.”

“My first album came out in 1995—you have your whole life to lead up to that first album. I thought it was quite original at the time,” he said. “And then I had 10 years of no albums. Fast forward to 2005, and it was kind of like starting over again. I got a deal with Dave Koz’s label [Rendezvous], and I thought that was a very original record for me [It’s All Good].

“Once I got out of college, I moved to Los Angeles and got my first tour with Teena Marie. My roots are still there.

“Every one of them is fantastic, and while those are the main stars, there are 50 other artists I can name. I drew something from everybody. I take in ideas for shows and songs. I still have a wonderful relationship with Dave––he’s such a great guy––as was George.”

Fort Hunter Park Harrisburg, www.dauphincounty.orgPennsylvania

“I enjoyed the manual labor and got into cooking for the first time in my life. I’m someone who cooked nothing before––grill a hamburger and make spaghetti, that was the extent. I started cooking three times a week, and got into preparing sauces for meats and doing things I’d never done before. It’s amazing what you can learn if you have the time.”

The busy artist has a new record in the works, and he’s excited to deliver it to the world. “I’m well into my new record. I’m planning on turning it in June for release later this year. No reason to wait. I have no idea how long I’m going to live,” he said with a hint of humor.

“I did a tour with Janet Jackson, which was an unbelievable experience and so much fun—I was playing in front of thousands of fans who were screaming louder than the band played. Ultimately, it all bleeds together. I could easily go back into that kind of R&B music without hesitation. It’s just part of who I am.”

“I had a hit song with ‘It’s All Good,’ and I was thinking, ‘Well, people liked that so maybe I should do something like it again.’

As airport patrons buzzed around him in the background, Simpson explained that he’s extremely happy to be a road warrior once again after the pandemic lull kept him homebound. “After a few years off, it was difficult to get excited about going to an airport— I thought about settling into early retirement,” he laughed.

The pianist has a heavy schedule of touring this year with a string of club dates, festivals and cruises booked throughout the summer and into the fall. He’s set for the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea cruise sailing from Amsterdam to the British Isles in May, and the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival in June, along with other major events.

Simpson’s career has taken him from his R&B-jazz beginnings as a young man to the pop-R&B world to contemporary jazz, but he feels there’s been a common denominator to the many facets of his career and all the music he’s created.

While All That Matters was born out of extensive writing and recording during the pandemic lockdown, Simpson had enough time on his hands to learn some new skills and catch up with home life necessities most musicians who spend months on the road ignore. “For someone like me, it was a tough transition, but I did a lot of work on my house, and learned a lot about wood and repair—wood hardeners, epoxies, fillers.

The Los Angeles resident spent many years as Koz’s music director, and he feels that period and his other experiences with superstar jazz musicians have made him a better composer and performer. “Before I worked with Dave, I spent 10 years with George Duke and Stanley Clarke, who are completely different types of entertainers.

Harrison was recording his first, All Things Must Pass, and Clapton was working on his record with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. During his time with The Beatles, Harrison had difficulty getting his songs considered. Bassist Klaus Voormann wrote in his memoir, “While John liked developing plans alone or together with Yoko, George always formed a real team with the band. We often worked out pieces together, and our opinion about it was important to George, while John put his ideas to tape very quickly. Patience wasn’t just a word with George.”

Clapton had moved through several different groups: Cream, Blind Faith and Delaney & Bonnie. While recording in Florida with a new group, he wrote “Layla” as a tribute to Boyd, but she still refused to leave Harrison. That’s when Clapton’s drug use escalated.

All Things Must Pass Away: Harrison, Clapton, and Other Assorted Love Songs” by Kenneth Womack and Jason Kruppa

Layla and All Things Must Pass were being recorded simultaneously, though Harrison’s album took a lot longer to complete even though Phil Spector was producing it. Layla came out to very mixed reviews, while Harrison’s release was lauded with great critical acclaim and Grammy nominations. However, the popularity of Harrison’s record eventually waned, and Clapton’s record with Derek and the Dominos became more and more admired over time, especially after the “VH1 Storytellers” aired the stripped-down version. After the completion of their albums, both Harrison and Clapton stepped back for a few years before recording again. Harrison’s interest in Eastern religion, which began while he was part of The Beatles, became a focus for him, and he became much more reserved. Clapton sank deeper into his drug addiction, which lasted for several years. Clapton finally confessed his feelings to Harrison. “I blurted the whole thing out to him: I’m in love with your wife. The ensuing conversation bordered on the absurd although I think he was deeply hurt … I could see it in his eyes … he preferred to make light of it, almost turning it into a Monty Python situation. I think he was relieved in some way, though, because I’m sure all the time he knew what had been going on, and now I was finally owning up to it.” Unhappy in her marriage, Boyd divorced Harrison in 1977, and two years later she married Clapton. That marriage lasted 10 years, then ended in divorce.

Harrison met Boyd during the filming of “A Hard Day’s Night,” and Clapton fell hard when he met her. The two musicians even became neighbors in their newly purchased estates. This book concentrates on the period of time when The Beatles were breaking up, and they were all working on solo albums.

RICK BRAUN

Rick Braun has been among the most accomplished and popular smooth jazz artists for nearly three decades, garnering numerous No. 1 radio hits and international stardom thanks to his 19 solo records, production work and vibrant live performances. With his latest album, simply titled Rick Braun, the trumpeter has hit the reset button on his creative career— it’s his initial independent release and first solo album of all original material. In the liner notes to the record, he calls this a new chapter in his musical life. around-the-world experiences

20 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS

By Ken Capobianco

Interestingly, Braun’s last album in 2019 was titled Crossroads, perhaps a bit of foreshadowing, but the musicianproducer, who started his career as a go-to sideman for some of the biggest names in pop, said the lockdown allowed him time to ponder things beyond making music.

“We’re all a product of our life experiences, and I’ve had the opportunity to travel to so many spots in the world—South America, Spain, Mexico, Turkey and beyond—so they are bound to influence you. I’ve also always loved Latin and Mediterranean music. That exotic, romantic vibe has always drawn me in. Sometimes I just can’t help it. I start out thinking I’m going to make a certain record, and then I’m inspired by Latin or Mediterranean or R&B, and the music goes in another direction.”

“Everyone has had time to reflect on our lives, and I certainly did. There’s a lot of gratitude still that I get to do this for a living. Not a lot of people are able to continue to do this at this level. I look back to the days when I was touring with Rod Stewart, and I was a sideman for so many people—Joe Cocker, Glenn Frey, Sade—and somehow life saw fit to reward me with the opportunity to make my own music and have that freedom. It was important for me to recognize that.”

Braun said he finds these ventures to be extremely rewarding, and he does everything to maximize the patrons’ experiences. “All of these events came about because of my partnership with Sandy Riser, my partner in Rick Braun Signature Events—I love doing them.

“It’s wonderful to see how much it cheers people up, and how we are creating memories people are going to carry with them their whole lives. To get to go out on the Rhine River or the Rhone River in France, as we are doing this summer, is terrific. The memories I have from all those trips are things I get to relive over and over again. I’m sure people who travel with us feel the same.”

He added that this past New Year’s Eve Getaway in Tucson, Arizona, was especially poignant, coming just before the larger omicron surge that threatened numerous concerts and events.

Over the past few years, Braun has branched out to more entrepreneurial endeavors with Rick Braun Signature Events that include hosting a New Year’s Eve Getaway and European River Cruise Getaways. These types of interactive travel ventures have become a staple on the smooth jazz circuit––most prominently hosted by Dave Koz and Brian Culbertson.

The album has a very lush feel thanks to Braun’s incorporation of a 10-piece live string section (arranged and conducted by Nick Lane) on five “Whensongs.Iwas in my COVID cocoon and in pre-production, I’d be thinking a lot about strings and what would help bump the songs up to the next level,” said Braun. “To be honest, real strings add an emotionality you just can’t get with synthesizers. They just take the music to places you can’t re-create. I was amazed at the string section Kathleen Robertson put together for me—they were some of Los Angeles’ top studio musicians, and I was so happy with how the songs turned out.”

“This past year we were going to get it done, and we did. It was The Los Angeles resident said recently via phone that the pandemic gave him an opportunity to reflect on his work and he decided to turn the page.

“I kind of worked on this in a vacuum, and I felt this was more of my project or my baby, so to speak, than any project I’ve done in recent history. It’s the first smooth jazz record that’s out on my own label [Brauntosaurus Records], and I did a lion’s share of the writing on this project, so it felt like a natural progression to self-title it—something special and a new start.”

MAY/JUNE 2022 | 21MAY/JUNE 2022 | 21

He paused and laughed, “Or maybe I’m going through a midlife crisis— a musical one. It’s cheaper to do this than get a divorce and buy a Porsche,” Braun, who is happily married to his wife of 25 years, Christiane, joked.

The new record, which has no appearances from Braun’s many popular smooth jazz peers, is an intimate affair recorded at his home studio with a core group of musicians, including keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, guitarist Tony Pulizzi, and percussionist Sergio Gonzalez, among others. It draws heavily on different musical influences from around the world, ranging from Latin fusion and balladry to Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean sources (“Back to Mallorca,” “Amor Di Vida [Love of My Life],” “Turkish,” “First Feet”). He claimed he is often inspired by the sounds of different countries and cultures he’s visited around the world on private travels or on cruises and at festivals.

The pandemic downtime also allowed Braun, who is on the road for a good portion of each year, to dedicate more time to his and Christiane’s children, Kyle, 20, and Emma, 22.

“I always refer back to a songwriting class I took with Buddy Kaye, who wrote a bunch of songs for Elvis and others when I first moved to LA. He got up in front of the class and wrote, ‘The world is full of unfulfilled genius. There’s no substitute for hard work.’

AmaWaterways AmaCello

Braun explained that his son was an integral contributor to the popular pandemic-era musical livestreams from their home, Rick’s Café Live. The performances became a lifeline for many smooth jazz fans who were craving a semblance of live music.

“And I have to say, I have a wonderful wife, who has been supportive and allowed me the opportunity to do what I do. She’s at the top of my list, but my kids, of course, and all the musicians I work with have helped me through the highs and lows in life and the industry. They are so important. You have to be surrounded by good people. They are the support system you need, and things will work out.”

“The simple joy of making music and getting better often gets me through. The process of creating and playing my horn was the energy that helped me go on.

“I really got time to spend with my son, who had a particularly bad time because he was a senior in high school during the shutdown,” Braun“Fortunately, said. he got to finish his season as a basketball player. He was all-state and all-city in Division 3 level. Had he had a normal year, I wouldn’t have been able to have that kind of time—he would have been out partying and hanging out, but he was home.”

OCT. 8 Thornton Winery’s Champagne Concert Series (RnR with Richard Elliot) Thornton www.thorntonwine.comTemecula,WineryCalifornia without anyone getting sick—we had 800 people there. It was so emotional for everyone to see each other again.”

“Emma was making passes for each show—she’d hand-draw them and dance each time. She loved it. I was able to spend a lot of quality time with her. The pandemic definitely helped bring the family together, and Rick’s Café Live was a big part of that because it was all-handson-deck with everyone supporting each other.”

Kyle is now a freshman at Marshall University in West Virginia, where he plays basketball with the hopes of making the NBA or playing internationally and making basketball his career (he majors in international business).

SEPT. 3 Gulf Coast Summer Fest Jazz Edition

Braun also spent more time with Emma, who is autistic. “That was very important, and she was happy to be involved in Rick’s Café Live, which really was a family affair,” he said.

Braun said that the kind of life lessons he imparts to his children often overlap with the advice he would give young musicians trying to make music a career.

“I’ve carried that with me throughout my life. I’ve always considered myself as a blue-collar musician. I used to practice my horn until I couldn’t play anymore. Just work as hard as you can, and good things willDespitehappen.”his sustained success, Braun, like every musician, has had his share of trying times, but he believes there are a few constants that helped him persevere and follow his dreams.
