For more than 20 years, an off-season visit to Catalina Island has been at the top of my New Year’s resolution list––and, just like my dieting and fitness goals, has never come to fruition. I had hoped last year would be different, especially because I had a little extra motivation: the Chihuly exhibit at the new Catalina Island Museum.

8 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS Dave Koz once told me that he tries to fit in an extra day or two when he’s on tour in a new town or country to explore the sights and culture.
Nearly every time I work at a jazz festival out of town, I try to do the same, but have yet to succeed at it or return as a proper tourist. There are so many places I wish I had time to explore when I’m finished manning the Smooth Jazz News booth. But, a typical festival work day starts before the oil has heated up to fry the first batch of battered catfish filets in the food court, and doesn’t end until after the stage crew has cleared off the last piece of equipment. By then, another deadline is calling me back home.
Dale Chihuly, a renowned artist and leader of the avant-garde development of glass as a fine art, has a permanent home at the Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle and in more than 200 museum collections worldwide, as well as temporary exhibits at other venues around the globe. So, seeing his works in Catalina would almost be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and certainly a convenient one for me. Plus, the museum had advertised the exhibit in our Annual Catalina Island Visitors Guide that year, and I always patronize our advertisers’ businesses.
On the day I had planned to leave for Avalon with a Chihulyloving friend, strong Santa Ana winds had fueled thousands of acres of fires throughout California, including one 30 miles from my home. The weather had also whipped up some pretty high seas, making it nearly impossible to travel by boat from the mainland to Avalon. My friend didn’t want to travel on rough waters, and was also fearful the flames might spread to our community, so she canceled.
But, with the hustle of working the booth during JazzTrax and racing to get meals in between afternoon and evening shows, it simply never happened ... until Dec. 11, 2017.
After that visually exhilarating experience, I had a 90-minute massage at A Touch of Heaven Day Spa (compliments of Sana Hernandez, the spa owner) downstairs from the hotel, where guests receive a 20 percent discount on any treatment. My massage therapist, Ramona Garcia, who has become a friend, possesses amazing reflexology, hot stone and Thai massage skills. She also introduced me to “raindrop” therapy, a treatment in which she sprinkled a variety of doTERRA brand essential oils (lavender, peppermint, clove, frankincense, oregano, eucalyptus, jasmine, ginger, etc.) onto my back and massaged them into my skin. And, at the end, she applied doTERRA’s Deep Blue oil (similar to an Icy Hot-type product, but all natural) to relieve my hip and back pain. After the massage, I took Ramona to dinner at Mi Casita to celebrate her recent engagement. On the drive to the restaurant in her golf cart, we saw so many festive sights: homes, businesses and streets spiffed up with holiday lights and decorations, and a big Christmas tree in the middle of town next to a palm tree. When we arrived at the restaurant, I was surprised to be seated immediately. There is usually a wait during JazzTrax. We ordered the “Catalina’s Original Cazuela” (a 28 oz. cocktail with tequila, fresh citrus fruit, special house mix) to share, along with chips with guacamole (served deconstructed on a plate with three scoops of avocado, chopped onions, tomato, serrano chiles and a fresh lime wedge, ready to assemble to your own liking).

It was the final day of the Catalina exhibit, and I didn’t want to miss it. So, I decided to go by myself, high seas and all.
When I checked into the Hotel Metropole, there was a crowd in the lobby. I thought, “Wow, these low, mid-week, off-season rates really pack in the people.” It turned out that they were Chihuly’s Seattle-based crew in town to break down, pack and ship the delicate glass art pieces. I dropped off my luggage in my room and headed up the street to the Catalina Island Museum to see the last two hours of this amazing art show, which featured indoor and outdoor displays of Chihuly’s award-winning work.
Afterward, I borrowed Ramona’s golf cart for one last spin around Avalon. I drove to the Casino, and over to Descanso Beach, then in the opposite direction to Lover’s Cove just past the ferry dock, and also made some stops at my favorite shops before it was time to board the boat back to Long Beach. I can’t believe how much I got to do in less than 24 hours, which is more than I can usually fit in during 10 days in October, and it was all at a leisurely pace at that!
After the meal and cocktail, it was time for me to get to bed. The next morning, I had planned on taking a tour, but opted for another massage instead. This time, I spent 60 minutes at the day spa, repeating the prior day’s therapies. By the time I was finished, the complimentary continental breakfast offered at the hotel had ended. So, I went to my favorite breakfast spot, Jack’s Original Country Kitchen. Again, I was surprised to see no line and no wait. I ordered the Dungeness crab cake benedict.
And, for the entreé, we had the Ranchero Enchilada (cheese enchilada covered in ortega chiles, relleno sauce and sour cream, with beans and rice). All delicious!

All of this talent is presented in scenic settings at two venues. Thursday night concerts are “Unplugged Under the Stars” at Descanso Beach, with, new this year, the addition of an opening act. Friday-Sunday performances are illuminated under elegant Tiffany chandeliers in the ballroom of the Catalina Casino. The iconic, circular, 11-story, 1929 landmark, perched at the edge of Avalon Harbor, is not a gambling facility, rather, it was named after the Italian word meaning “a place of gathering.”
Trumpeter Willie Bradley (from the legendary James Brown Band) makes his JazzTrax debut (Oct. 14), as does Rads Krusaders, a Joe Sample-mentored group from Houston (Oct. 13). Rising stars saxophonist Jazmin Ghent and guitarist Adam Hawley are returning alongside headliners such as Najee, Candy Dulfer and RichardThereElliot.willalso be blasts from the past with ’80s pop-jazz vocalist Basia and keyboardist Dan Siegel, as well as the hottest violinist on the current touring circuit, Damien Escobar.
So, if you’re looking for something cool to do in October, be it a weekend getaway or a day trip (Catalina Express has late-night boats back to Long Beach on Saturday and Sunday nights), the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival is an excellent choice.

Although Good left KiFM in 1999 before it flipped formats, he continues bringing audiences “the absolute newest and classic old” smooth jazz through his weekly syndicated “JazzTrax” radio show (which now streams on Smooth Jazz KiFM’s online and 98.1 HD2 channels), and live during his annual Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, now in its 32nd year. Good has a knack for creating a lineup featuring the stars of smooth jazz complemented by up-and-coming acts and names that are unfamiliar to most of us, plus special ensembles. For example, he encouraged Swedish keyboardist Jonathan Fritzén to form a trio with saxophonist Marcus Anderson and vocalistviolinist Peter “Peet” Ferencz (from Budapest, Hungary), which he calls “The Euro All-Stars with a Little Bit of Carolina,” the scheduled headliners for Friday, Oct. 19. As one of the pioneers of smooth jazz, Art Good was credited with bringing emerging artists to fame, playing the records of then-unknowns (who evolved into genre stars) on his “Lites Out San Diego” radio show. He soon parlayed his enthusiasm for that exciting and blossoming radio format with local concerts showcasing a new crop of musical talent whose tunes he was spinning from the Smooth Jazz 98.1 KiFM studios.

Each October, genre enthusiasts sail 26 miles across the Southern California coastline to Avalon for the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival. Just don’t expect her to make albums at the rate of most musicians who tread on the pop music industry hamster wheel and churn them out like Big Macs.
“Of course, I also want to spend time with my family. Having quality time with them and friends is quite important, also. It’s about

I’m just not one of them,” laughed the renowned vocalist, who has worked with her longtime musical collaborator, Danny White (the brother of smooth jazz superstar Peter White), for more than 30 years.
Butterflies finds Basia in excellent form, as it’s one of her most eclectic and versatile records, combining the Latin-tinged jazz-pop distinctive to her sound with big band, acoustic jazz, sultry dance,
“I just am slow about making music. I’ll admit that. I like to take my time, and that can be very frustrating for Danny, who likes to work at a faster tempo. Making music is very important to me, and I want to create songs that everyone can relate to. For me, that takes time.

living a full life, so that’s a priority for me. I do write a lot of songs, and, for an album, I choose 10 I’m happy with.”

The London-based singer took a breath and considered her words. “It’s always more important to have quality than quantity, isn’t it? At least that’s what I think. If I’m happy with what I put out, to me, that’s what’s important.”
Release of Butterflies represents freedom to record what she wants
“I guess you could say I’m not the most prolific when it comes to putting out albums,” the talkative, good-natured musician born Barbara Trzetrzelewska said via phone recently.
The vocalist’s newest album, Butterflies, is her first record of original music in nine years and only her third album of originals over the last quarter century.
just let us be and do what we wanted. We had a track record, so they trusted us, but there were other pressures. It’s a difficult industry.
“I was able to get a better grasp of my private life, and I realized I could do whatever I wanted instead of what was expected of me. That’s a big difference,” she emphasized. “I was lucky. I never received pressure from the record company when I was selling records. They “ I really never made music by worrying about being too diverse or maybe confusing to people who have to market it. I just make the kind of music I like and whatever I feel.”
“You can get caught up in that fear of failure and not being liked, so it’s best to stay away from the rubbish of glitz and glamour. I always appreciated a great musician like Mark Knopfler, who always had a low profile and made the music he wanted to make.
It’s important to do what you feel and what makes you most comfortable. That doesn’t only apply to music, but to everything.” Her music’s foundation is based on her collaboration with Danny White. They met in the ’80s jazz-pop band Matt Bianco, which also featured Mark Reilly, a collaborator on Butterflies “Danny and I have been collaborating for so many years—it feels natural. It’s always been easy,” she said.
“I’ve always tried to be eclectic, even though record companies and radio has had a tough time classifying the music and figuring out how to sell it. Years ago, they used to worry about what shelf to put my albums on in the record stores. I don’t think they have to worry about that anymore,” she said with a laugh.
“It’s a little different now also because I have less pressure from outside forces. I’m pretty free to do what I want and that makes for a wonderful creative freedom we didn’t always have.”
“He’s a perfectionist and so am I, but in different ways. We know what we want, and together, we’re able to achieve it. It’s a very beautiful thing.” She added that her long break from recording sent them in different directions, but they were bound to work together once she decided to get back into the studio.
“When I had breaks, he tried to wait for someone else or work with others, but didn’t find that musical common ground, and when I returned, he came back. It was like we never missed any time together. Things just fell into place.” continued on page 22 romantic pop, and an Asian-influenced ballad. Of course, the focus remains on Basia’s rich vocals that elevate the songs to heights few singers can achieve.
She didn’t return to recording until 2009. She said her time outside the music industry gave her a different perspective on life and music, which is now reflected in Butterflies.
After a Broadway run of shows that culminated in the album Basia on Broadway in 1995 (she beat Bruce Springsteen to the trick by over two decades), the singer stepped away from the recording industry to reclaim her with personal matt ers.

I listen to a lot of pop music, and I’m always fascinated by the different styles I hear. I love jazz, classical, soul and so many different styles, so, of course, my songs are going to reflect different tastes and approaches.
“And now, I just don’t care about any of that. Now that I think about it, I feel like a butterfly. Butterflies are free and unaffected. What I feel now is a grown-up freedom to do what I want and be who I want to be. I don’t worry about what people say.” She thought momentarily and added, “I’m so happy that the new album was so warmly received. I am speaking in my own voice, and people are responding to the music. That’s what ma tters—the music.” Basia maintained that getting sucked into the pop-star-makingmachine can be a dangerous thing, and she admires artists who have kept their distance from the industry while achieving great success.

“He’s half E ng lish and half French, and I’m Polish, so we come from very different backgrounds, but our musical tastes were very similar. We both loved Quincy Jo nes and soul music and immediately found common ground. It was always easy to work together. On music things, we understand each other without words, and that’s so rare.
Basia is in a very different place than she was in the 1980s and 1990s, when she was a pop superstar in high demand around the world thanks to her best-selling records like and Tide (1987); London Warsaw New York which yielded the hit single “Cruising For Bruising;” and The Sweetest Illusion (1994), an album that turned her into a dance floor sensation thanks to the fizzy “Drunk on Love.”
“That time I spent and all my downtime over the years was freeing. I could step back with no pressure to make a new record and then observe myself from a distance.

While she is an international superstar with fans in countries around the globe, Basia is still surprised at the reaction her music gets at shows in places where she hasn’t played before.

“Making a record is a process, though, so it might take a bit of time.” She paused for a few moments, and added cheerfully, “I can’t promise anything, but let’s stay optimistic.”
Now that she’s on tour, Basia isn’t looking ahead, but she is hopeful that she won’t keep her fans waiting another nine years until her next record. “That’s not the plan, but you never know,” she said slyly. “I honestly don’t think so. We wrote a lot of songs for this record, so there are a few of them we have done. I’m so encouraged by the reaction to Butterflies, so I’m feeling positive about it.
“I like festivals because there are different acts—some I’m unfamiliar with—and I enjoy listening to everyone. I learn a lot while enjoying the sets. There’s usually a special energy. We rehearse a lot for the shows and are quite meticulous about them. As I said, Danny is a perfectionist, and we want to give the audience the best show

In Poland, a lot of my friends will come out, and some of them have totally different views—the country is very divided now—and everyone forgets about their differences and comes together. That’s what is so powerful about music.”
“When I was in Cape Town, I was in shock. Once we started playing, everyone began singing along immediately,” she said, laughing. “I had no idea. I was in middle school when my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation — all while raising me. Thankfully, researchers supported by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation have invested years into studying the disease to provide effective treatment options for women like my grandma. This gave her a new lease on life. My grandma entered remission and was there to support me when, years later, I was diagnosed with cancer. Scientific advancements helped me get past my disease too. Today we’re fortunate enough to call ourselves cancer survivors. That’s why I have chosen to dedicate my career to helping more women like us. Research is the reason we have each other.
