“I found a small lump in February 2018, and requested a mammogram. But due to HMO restrictions––only one allowed per year, on or after the anniversary date of the last mammogram––I was not able to have my annual checkup until
Therespect.Paynes host this annual sailing for their employees and top clients to acknowledge and show appreciation for helping their company grow from a three-employee, one office business in 2006 to a multimillion-dollar corporation with three offices and a staff of 45 today. For Kathy, however, her gratitude rises beyond any business or monetary measures. After battling breast cancer for the past year, she was recently declared cancer-free!

Kathy was stunned to receive the usual “all clear” letter two weeks later.
“It was probably the most common and most treatable, however, it had broken through the duct wall and into the lymph nodes, so it was categorized as stage 2B,” she explained. “That’s when I went into full research mode. The most comprehensive website I found was breastcancer.org. It’s very informative and user-friendly, using terms I could really understand.”
Treatment was next. But, it was delayed for two months because she wanted to change her insurance plan from an HMO to a PPO.
Although she and her husband, Willie, were expecting the results of her 3D mammogram any day, she waited until the next morning to share the news with him. She wanted to tell him when it was quiet, before the hustle and bustle of the festival they were co-partnering.
April,” she said. During the appointment, she showed the technician the location of the lump and explained to her that it had grown in size.

“The results really bothered me,” she said. “So, I made another appointment with my doctor. She thought it was a fibroid, and ordered a 3D mammogram.” The official term is breast tomosynthesis, an imaging test that combines multiple breast X-rays to create a 3D picture of theDuringbreast. that mammogram, the radiologist saw something that concerned him, and he immediately ordered an ultrasound, then a biopsy. The resulting diagnosis was estrogen receptor positive HER2 negative. In that moment, Kathy joined a grim statistic: she was one-in-eight women in the United States diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I was so done jumping through hoops to get preapprovals and having someone dictate when and where and then wait, wait, wait,” she explained. “I was determined to find the best possible treatment available. Fortunately, I was blessed to find UCSD. My surgeon, Dr. Anne Wallace, and oncologist, Dr. Richard Schwab, believed I was a good candidate for a clinical trial known as the ISPY2
“I was officially diagnosed on June 26, 2018, but I received the call on Friday, around 5 p.m., the day of The San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival kickoff. I was preparing to host a pre-party in our suite at the Hyatt,” Kathy recalled. “I remember hearing the doctor’s words but not really absorbing ‘You have a malignancy that spread to the lymph nodes.’”
My latest outing of note was Payne Pest Management’s Customer Appreciation Cruise aboard Admiral Hornblower on a sunny Saturday in August. Willie and Kathy Payne, along with their son Jason (company president and chief operations officer), chartered the 151foot, three-deck vessel, and entertained 140 guests with passed appetizers, an open bar and a DJ for two hours before getting underway for an additional three-hour excursion around San Diego Bay.
“My husband and I have been together for 40 years. He is the epitome of our vows ‘in sickness and in health.’”
Many of our readers know the Paynes from their generous support, sponsorships and production of Southern California smooth jazz concerts and festivals. However, to Payne Pest Management customers, they are the reliable source for all pest control services. To their employees, this family owned business is a place of inclusion and opportunity where they are treated with

The good news was that she got approved for the trials. The bad news was she qualified because she was at high risk of recurrence. In mid-August 2018, Kathy began 12 weekly treatments of combined immunotherapy and chemotherapy, followed by eight weeks of biweekly treatments of traditional chemotherapy as well as seven MRIs throughout the process to monitor the tumor.
“Within the first three weeks of immunotherapy, the tumor had shrunk 50 percent by volume. Upon completion of chemotherapy, there was nothing left of the tumor!” she exclaimed. “I then underwent a lumpectomy to basically remove marginal tissue plus lymph nodes. The final part of treatment was 30 daily treatments of radiation, which I completed at the end of May

running down my back, I was beside myself. I knew it was coming, but I still couldn’t stop sobbing in my husband’s arms when I got out of the shower. Silly, right? It’s just hair.
“My husband and I have been together for 40 years. He is the epitome of our vows ‘in sickness and in health.’ He attended every doctor’s appointment, every test, took me to every infusion visit and was there for me every step of the way. He was so supportive, especially during the last few chemo rounds when I wasn’t feeling well. He helped me up the stairs when I didn’t think I could take another step. He did the dishes, the laundry and so much more. The biggest compliment he gave me was when he told me he didn’t realize how much I meant to our family, our business and our lives, that I was the center and rock of ourTheworld!”couple met when Kathy started her first job at Terminix, where Willie worked as a termite inspector-salesman. They started dating two years later, when Willie was a single father of three kids, then aged 4, 8 and 12 years old.
However, Kathy needed no assistance to dance on their Hornblower cruise, as she and Willie danced with each other and friends to several songs. While she didn’t have the long blond locks of her wig to whip around when she was cupid shuffling—it’s now on its stand in a closet awaiting donation to Michelle’s Place—her natural hair is growing back into a cute short style, and the fatigue has subsided, freeing her to dance with even more abandon.
In the spirit of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Kathy’s advice to everyone (including men) is “Be very aware of your body. Perform monthly self-exams and receive annual mammograms. Early detection saves lives and makes treatment more effective.” She added, “Having the support of family and friends can make all the difference when dealing with this or any disease.”
However, the most devastating side effect was losing her hair. “My doctor told me women would rather lose any body part, including a breast, than lose their hair; and he’s correct. The morning I stood in the shower and huge clumps of hair started
program. It utilizes known immunotherapies successful in other types of cancer to treat breast cancer.”

One of the worst symptoms the grandmother of eight, philanthropist, avid jazz fan and Payne Pest Management’s chief financial officer experienced was fatigue. “I felt like my feet were stuck in the mud, and my body weighed 1,000 pounds some days,” she recalled.
Kathy and Willie did, however, have to cancel several preplanned trips: a cruise to Israel, Brian Culbertson’s first Chicago Getaway and their annual family reunion. “But we were able to attend the 2018 Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival,” she said. “And, my doctors did allow me to take a break between surgery and radiation to go to Australia on the 2019 Dave Koz cruise. I was very grateful for that time.”

“I really didn’t feel that bad,” she said. “I had my treatments on Tuesday, took Wednesday off and went back to work on Thursday. I credit God first, as I immediately handed it over to Him. I really didn’t have time for cancer––I have my husband, a business to run, a home, my 88-year-old mother lives with us, grandchildren to love, and we love to travel.”
Last New Year’s Eve, with two of their now-grown children and their spouses in attendance, the Paynes were partners of a two-night event at the US Grant Hotel in San Diego. Kathy hoped that, after her final chemo treatment four days prior, she would be feeling well enough to party into 2019. It turned out that she barely had enough energy to dance through one song. So, when Gerald Albright started playing “Champagne Life,” Willie stood her up, walked her to the dance floor, and held onto her as they danced to the entire song. “It was the best moment of 2018-2019,” Kathy exuded.

This year’s Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival expands its alluring vibe by adding after-show CD-release parties and artist meet-and-greets at one of Avalon’s newest restaurants, Toyon Grill, on Thursday and Friday nights. During their featured nights, with their latest CDs playing, Rick Braun, Keiko Matsui, Peter White and David Benoit (who is making a special trip to the island even though he isn’t performing at the festival) will mingle with fans, sign autographs and snap selfies. Located near the Cabrillo Mole, where the Catalina Express ferries dock, this venue offers sweeping views of Avalon Harbor from the second floor of Trailhead, Catalina Island Conservancy’s recently constructed, three-story flagship facility.

“Of course, the big theme this year is the 90th and 100th anniversaries. We celebrate opening weekend with The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, then Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band closing weekend,” said Good. “It’s also apparently the island debut of The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra. I’ve Googled and Googled and can’t find any record of Basie playing in the Catalina Ballroom during the ’30s and ’40s big-band era. Their manager can’t find any record of it either.”

The celebration of smooth jazz accompanies a notable date—the 100th anniversary of chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr.’s purchase of the Catalina Island Co. Ten years after his acquisition, the island’s landmark Catalina Casino opened, attracting movie studio moguls to its elegant ground-floor Avalon Theatre with hand-painted murals and a Page pipe organ (which is still played before movies on Friday and Saturday nights). Back then, visitors traveled by steamship to also twirl and jitterbug their hearts out to the sounds of the big bands in the top-floor ballroom adorned in a lavish medley of rose-hued walls, gold and silver leaf accents, art deco reliefs, an arching 50-foot ceiling with five Tiffany-esque chandeliers and French doors connecting it to the “Romance Promenade” (aka veranda) encircling the 12-story-tall building.
If flying into the Los Angeles-Orange County areas, flights are available into John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA), Long Beach Airport (LGB) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Shuttles and taxis are available from these airports to cross-channel transportation operators. Distance to Catalina Express’ Long Beach terminal is approximately 11 miles from LGB, 22 miles from LAX and 29 miles from SNA.

Unlike most vacation destinations, there are no rental cars in Avalon, the 1-square-mile slice of Santa Catalina Island, and its only city. Walking is the main mode of transportation for visitors, while most locals zip around on golf carts, unless they hold a permit to own one of the 400 cars issued to residents on the island (there is a 45-year waiting list for a new permit). However, one can hail a taxi, take the Garibaldi Public Bus or rent a golf cart (two- or three-hour maximum). And, a few hotels offer shuttle service from the Cabrillo Mole, where the Catalina Express high-speed ferries dock. But, most people roll their luggage along the waterfront and stroll to their accommodations.

Original Jack’s Country Kitchen is just a few doors up from the Green Pleasure Pier.
The clean seaside air competes with the aroma of freshly caught seafood and other delights cooking in the kitchens from the abundance of eating establishments; temptations that can be indulged before, after and between the shows. There are also a variety of shopping, spa, sightseeing and other activities to explore. With so many enticing choices (zip lining, golfing, jet skiing, parasailing, glass bottom boat and undersea excursions), adding an extra day or two to your trip is a good idea.
Dining
The best breakfast place on the island, according to Smooth Jazz News , is Original Jack’s Country Kitchen . This Catalinathemed diner offers extensive breakfast and lunch menus as well as desserts. Enjoy fresh-fruit crepes, chicken and waffles, homemade soups and chili, burgers, sandwiches, salads, hot-plate meals and more. Their meals are made with the finest ingredients such as eggs from cage-free hens, Jidori free-range chicken, Niman Ranch beef and pork. Pies, bolillos, croissants and muffins are baked daily at their adjoining bakery, and, coming soon, Mrs. T’s Chinese Kitchen.

In choosing a title for the 10-track recording, the trumpeter wanted something that embodied two directions in his life: his innovative approach to contemporary jazz and sentiments of the past.
EVERYTHING IS SHIFTING in Rick Braun’s personal and professional life, from seeing his new CD Crossroads take the No. 1 slot on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart to transitioning from a doting dad to an empty nester.

RICK BRAUN
By Marcia Manna
“ My family life has influenced me musically all through my career,”
“I got him lessons. I was like, ‘You have to play it one half-hour a day.’ He resisted. I didn’t want to get into a parent-child battle, so I let it
“It’s a very emotional time,” Braun confessed. “There were five schools we looked at, and this one suited her best. She is high functioning, and we want to give her every chance. It’s an idyllic setting, and they really promote learning basic life skills. We set up her room to be comfy, and she was smiling and seemed happy. We hope this leads to a better life for her.”
OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2019 | 17
Braun plays trumpet, flugelhorn and valve trombone on Crossroads, which was recorded at his private, West Coast studio. The CD includes eight original songs along with a new interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” and “Versace on the Floor,” popularized by Bruno Mars and cleverly arranged by Chris “Big Dog” Davis.
Though Braun said he had a “lot of anxiety” about his son becoming a career musician, there was a time when he insisted Kyle learn to play the piano.
After saying goodbye to Emma, Braun sat in his daughter’s room at home, drank a glass of wine and relived history. “I’m realizing she is a grown-up young lady,” he said, sighing. “It seems like it came … just like that.”
In August, days before Crossroads was released, Braun and his wife of 22 years, Christiane, enrolled Emma in a residential program at Meristem, a California school that serves young adults on the autism spectrum by helping them toward more independence.
Though his children are entering adulthood, Braun’s musical career has created a link between generations. “I mean, to have teenage kids who enjoy what I’m doing musically, I love it,” Braun said. “My son downloaded Crossroads as soon as it was available so he could have it on his iPhone. He’s called me a few times playing songs from it in the background, and some of his 17-year-old friends are fans of my music.”
While his children are moving out of the nest, Braun’s extended musical family remains a constant. He has produced records at his studio for many musicians, including David Benoit, Dave Koz and Richard Elliot.
A chart-topping instrumentalist and composer, Braun first scored a hit in the 1980s by co-writing REO Speedwagon’s “Here with Me.” He then went on to tour with Rod Stewart and Sade, and contributed to recordings by Stewart, Tom Petty and many others.
“It’s a whole different animal. I especially enjoyed taking it back to the 1940s, with the plunger trumpet and trombone, and making it a big-band party.”
Crossroads opens with the song “Around the Corner,” an attentiongrabber with a crisp horn melody that floats over a funky groove. Braun wrote it for his 19-year-old daughter, Emma, who is autistic. “She loves to dance but doesn’t have the dexterity in her fingers to play an instrument,” Braun said. “My daughter is one of my biggest fans in the world. She just loves music, and that’s one she can dance to.”
“There’s nothing like having the best musicians in the world as friends,” Braun declared in the Crossroads liner notes.
In addition to touring nationally, Braun is headlining the 33rd Annual Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival on Oct. 19. “It was the very first show that I did when my career started,” remembered Braun,
Braun explained.

Braun has released more than a dozen solo albums, and Crossroads, his second project on the Shanachie Entertainment label, features stellar contributions from numerous artists, among them keyboardists Philippe Saisse and Greg Phillinganes; guitarists Peter White, Michael Thompson and Tony Pulizzi; tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot; drummers Eric Valentine and Gregg Bissonette; percussionist Richie Garcia; and bassists Nate Phillips and Ken Wild. Wild delivers an acoustic version of the distinctive, eight-note bass line on the cut “I Wish.” “He did an amazing job, staying accurate to that line but adding a jazz influence,” Braun enthused.
“Family” was a consideration, so was “Generations”––ultimately, Crossroads made the cut.
passion is basketball [he recently received an offer from the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland], but eventually he learned to play piano by ear, well enough to impress his dad.
“Whatever it takes for him to continue to enjoy music, I’m OK with it,” Braun said. “When we went to see ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ he came home and started learning all of those Queen songs. When he recorded the track for ‘Versace on the Floor’ in the studio, I basically put the piano on and turned on the recorder and went out to make a phone call and have coffee. I came back in, and he said, ‘I think I got it Dad.’ I listened back, and there it was. He really has a good touch, you know?”

“My family life has influenced me musically all through my career,” Braun explained during a phone interview from his Woodland Hills, California, home. “My daughter just went to an independent living school, and my son is getting ready to go to college. Things are changing so much around our house, and I’m at a crossroads. And there are so many things changing in the world, it just seemed like the right title at this moment.”
Braun’s son, Kyle, a 17-year-old high school senior, plays the piano introduction on “Versace on the Floor,” the record’s last cut.
“I’m a firm believer in hard work, and luck happens for people who work hard. I work hard, but it’s nice to look at something and think, I’m gonna be OK.”
For more information on Braun, including his complete tour schedule, visit www.rickbraun.com.
“Rick has agreed to be the centerpiece both musically, along with a live band, and as the subject of an onstage interview that will be sprinkled throughout his performance. ‘Life, Love, and Women’ will be the focus of that interview and his musical choices for the event. We will also feature previous winners of our grants as part of this magical event.”
“It made me feel so special,” Braun said. “I was a little dude then, so I didn’t wear it. But I came home from college one summer, found it in the jewelry box, and I put it on. That was my lucky ring, and I wore it ever since then. So I hope that doesn’t change everything in my life.”

On the last river cruise, Braun lost a ring, a talisman that sparked superstition about the road ahead. It was an antique, carved ruby worn on his right ring finger for decades and often visible in publicity photos. Dating back to the 1930s, the ring was discovered in a garden and given to him by a relative when he was 12 years old.

The search was on for a new ring, and he’s found a similar one from the 1950s. Braun intends to buy it and continue on a path of creating his own luck. “The ring looks almost exactly the same,” he said.
“Art Good [radio personality, producer of the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival and a pioneer of the smooth jazz genre] took chances on new and little-known artists. It’s an honor to come back after all these years.”

On New Year’s Eve, Braun continues his tradition of hosting his signature, two-day event benefiting the Autism Society and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the prestigious JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Arizona. “We’ve raised half a million for the Autism Society over the years,” Braun said. “This year I have Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Nick Colionne and Mindi Abair. It’s awesome.”
Another much anticipated engagement under Braun’s Signature Events umbrella is his European River Cruise Getaway, a voyage that is already sold out in 2020, and tickets are going fast for 2021.
Braun is also performing a new show, “Life, Love, and Women: Music & Conversation with Rick Braun,” produced by Sandy Riser, his business partner with Rick Braun Signature Events. Scheduled for Nov. 17, in Oceanside, California, this performance is sponsored by Soroptimist International of Oceanside-Carlsbad, and it benefits women and girls in North San Diego County. According to Riser, “The main focus of Soroptimist International of Oceanside-Carlsbad is to raise money for community training and service grants, which help women and girls receive the resources they need to complete their education, improve their skills and therefore increase their career and employment possibilities.

You’ve been neglecting yourself lately. You need a breather, so dial back on your commitments. Maybe it’s time to prioritize your tasks differently. Stick to what is beneficial to you, and drop some of the others that no longer have real value.

While considering songs for his future albums, Simon became interested in various musical styles, such as gospel, reggae and the music of South Africa. He went to South Africa to record with local musicians, which led to his writing the music for his album Graceland . However, it was during apartheid, and Simon was criticized for recording there. He continued to explore new sounds in his following albums.
Scorpio Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
Once their early attempts to make a hit single ended, and their desire to become part of the New York folk music scene did not do well, Simon went to England, where he gained some success and acceptance. While he was there, the single for “Sounds of Silence” was slightly altered, moving away from the folk music acoustic version, and it became a hit. Simon and Garfunkel got together to record albums, and they were immensely successful.
Someone on the job is making a proposal that sounds exciting. Unfortunately, you are going to be the one to shoot this idea down based on your research or experience. Try to be gentle when poking holes in the plan, but it must be done.
You’re in a partnership that is not working. The other person may not agree, but it is up to you to state your case. No more pretending that everything will work out. Your disagreements are too basic to ignore. It is time to face reality and communicate.
Take the time to listen to others, rather than recklessly proceeding. Sometimes there is a reason for the advice of others, and you will have to control your stubborn nature.
Gemini May 21 - June 21
Family issues fall onto you once again. Try to keep positive through all the tasks that need to be completed. All this will pass, and you will only be stronger. Your family has been lucky to have your caretaking through the years.
Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20
The bottom line with this musical legend is that he is a songwriter first, which is reflected in this biography.
Robert Hilburn, Los Angeles Times pop music critic and editor for 35 years, had the approval and cooperation of Paul Simon to write Simon’s biography. Hilburn’s access to Simon, his friends and co-workers allowed him to create this extremely well-written book, charting a 50-plus-year career that includes 16 GRAMMY Awards.

You recently saved your financial situation, and can now breathe a sigh of relief. Don’t give up the fight, though. You need to research exactly how you ended up in the red, so it won’t happen again. Remember, the little things can add up.
You’re very excited about a new project. Keep all that enthusiasm going while you dig deep into the details to make sure all your work will be decently compensated. You don’t want to make the mistake of leaving yourself out of the equation.
Virgo Aug. 23 - Sept. 22
You’ve been getting a lot of advice and nagging from those around you. It’s time to stop ignoring all those folks and seriously think about what they are saying. Thoroughly process the information, and make a decision that will be positive for you.
Sagittarius Nov. 22 - Dec. 21
You better watch your own behavior now. You might be bored or in the mood for some mischief, but don’t make the mistake of thinking you can break the rules and not pay the price. Tamp down those careless choices before they are made.
You have a scheme in mind that is garnering a lot of criticism.

Hilburn digs deep into Simon’s songwriting process, mining the origins of songs and dissecting the individual lyrics. Simon says in the book, “When I’m driving, you wouldn’t want to be on the same road, because I’m basically just listening to the latest song I’m working on. I’m often trying to figure out what words go with the music.”
Hilburn addresses the relationship between Simon and Art Garfunkel several times in the book. The two met as young boys, and they were called Tom and Jerry when attempting to record singles as youngsters in New York City. Over the years, their relationship has been both calm and stormy. After the initial fame that came to the duo, both were still interested in making their own albums. Simon wrote the song “Mrs. Robinson” for Mike Nichols’ movie “The Graduate,” in which Garfunkel had a part. Garfunkel’s ambitions to act in movies played a part in their breakup. In later years, as they toured together, there often was tension that never quite got resolved.
Take the time to pay attention to a relationship that is suffering from lack of attention. Step back, review your actions and change what you need to do in order to make this relationship healthier.

Simon attempted to join the world of cinema with his film “One Trick Pony,” which was not a success. He later attempted a Broadway play, “The Capeman,” which also failed, partially because it was based on a very dark subject. His longtime relationship with Lorne Michaels of “Saturday Night Live” fame led to his frequent appearances on that series. His performance the day after 9/11 was one of the first done by an entertainer. As longtime New Yorkers, they thought Simon would appeal to the viewers at such a painful time.
