CHICAGO STUDIO FALL 2013 We explored the physical and social impact of increasing density around public transportation points (L Stations) in Uptown. We imagine that the future town "square", or city center, are the points of mass public transportation. We tested current architectural typologies through new locally oriented urban planning & policy, and created a new urban landscape infrastructure that actively shapes the built environment and reintroduces naturally sustainable systems. Our goal was to discover new urban strategies for more condensed, multimodal communities. 4

WILSON YARDS Our group, CANNON Design is comprised of 2 Interior Designers and 2 Architects and we participated in the design of a mixed-use building project. Located in Wilson Yards, Uptown, the project rests beside the Wilson Red Line Train stop, acting as a hub for the neighborhood’s transit. The project aims at further activating Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood and the site through the establishment of a Place of Exchange. Uptown is prime for the further development of its historic entertainment district and the spark that will enliven its’ residents.

PROGRAM The program was inspired by the Institute of Cultural Affairs in Uptown, Chicago. The ICA is an organization that houses multiple non-profit organizations whose primary focus is to give back to the community.

LOOR VERTICAL CONNECTION THE GREEN FLOOR TAKES USERS ON MULTIPLE JOURNEYS THROUGHOUT THE SPACE. EVERY TIMES THE PUBLIC ENTERS AND EXITS THEY FEEL ENLIGHTENED. THE “EXCHANGE” BETWEEN USERS OCCURS WHEN PASSING BY OTHERS ON THE INTERTWINING PATHS. THE POINTS OF INTERSECTION CREATE PEAK MOMENTS WHERE EXCHANGE CAN OCCUR.

A VERTICAL CONNECTION OF THE PUBLIC GREEN FLOOR IS ESTABLISHED THROUGH DOUBLE HEIGHT LOBBY SPACES. THESE SPACES ARE MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT THE MAIN ENTRANCES AS A MEANS OF INVITINGAND WELCOMING PEOPLE INTO THE BUILDING. 63

INTERNSHIP Working alongside professionals, we had the opportunity to respond to the CTA’s Request for Ideas. The CTA requests a mixed-use building with commercial and residential while averaging 8-10 floors tall. We used our initial findings from our previous project to jump-start our response, which led to a few changes.

INTERNSHIP CANNON DESIGN EDUCATION DEPT.
