EDITORIAL – JUNE - JULY 2013

JUICE IT UP! Well here I am, back in the saddle, chair, seat after a month of pondering my thoughts and hitting the keyboard day in day out not to mention exploring this and that and many more ideas on how to sell more travel. What struck me as I met with a couple of travel agents and sat back with a coffee to watch the emails fill my inbox was the amount of information overkill that travel agents receive each and every day. ANNOUNCING My travel agent chat supported my own view as they advised me they rarely read anything in depth and much of what they A New Sister Magazine receive is just not required. Every supplier, department of tourism is so anxious to strut their stuff online and earn their salary that they are just pushing it out the virtual door thinking travel agents will read it. Wrong! Lesson to learn here. The lesson is for you to learn and not repeat it between you and your clients. What you do send to your clients should be best of best and create an “I WANNA GO THERE!” response – versus a “Didn’t we just get that, again!” response. So what you need to do then is: JUICE IT UP! That means create a blended marketing plan that includes both off line and online marketing activities and more use of video. You might also want to think hard about that ‐ and still a hidden secret to many a travel agent ‐ the press release. Plenty of ground to cover in this issue – so better get to it. If you are a travel agency owner or manager, don’t forget to You can find it HERE. read TAM – the July / August edition will be published soon. Here’s to a very successful month. Is your juice worth the squeeze? Are you getting a return on your marketing time? Are you generating inquiries that you can convert to a booking? If not then you must start…

Adding the right JUICE means your marketing will better connect with your existing clients and also generate referrals and new prospects to as your new approach starts to go viral and viral is the key word here. Everything you produce and send out or upload must be done with going‐viral in mind. The first thing to check on is what exactly you are doing in the way of marketing yourself, your team, your agency etc. You’ll need to review whether or not your marketing activities are in line with what you marketing plan has set out for you to accomplish. If you do not have a marketing plan written down, or even a one‐pager then you’ll be battling every step of the way to stay on point. You’ll need to know what sales you need to generate and then decide how you’ll generate those sales, who from, when and the products you intend to promote and after that, you can put your thoughts to the marketing activity with an added squeeze of high octane JUICE! No more same ole same ole for you.

Gotta Go Video There is no way forward without video as a component of your plan. It’s just that this is the time for video to shine. Travel as always been a multi sensory sale. Before, back in the day, before all the techno goodies came along, it was you, your knowledge, your snapshots and the ability to tell your story and conjure that image in your client’s mind that they too want to do what you have done and experience what you told them for themselves. Now you can rest easy as your video does all of that and more. You don’t even have to ask for the sale. You can add that text to your video so the client reads it throughout the video and at the end for sure.

Time Investment Most certainly to JUICE up your marketing will take more than a few hours of education and the learning of and about new software for instance and how best to present your video content. To capture video content you can use your smart phone, or your DLSR that also shoots HD video, you can download supplier’s video content and repurpose them with your supplier’s permission. The Basic Welcome Video Take a look at your website home page. Does it actually welcome anyone? Does it really welcome them and suggest they do this or that, to enjoy browsing, to come back again, to call this number or send an email. It probably does, and it probably does all of that via text. What if you spiced it up, JUICED it up and added a video of you the owner‐manager, welcoming your website visitor, greeting them warmly and then in 90 seconds max’ selling your agency as the only place to book that trip? More Video Here The About Us Page: Let’s turn to the About Us webpage. Here we need another video as you tell your visitor all about the services you offer and why they should book with you. New Tour Page: Anytime you are pitching a new tour or product, a new destination you can, should support it with a video. Staff Videos: Why not? Have each member of staff record a short introduction, well scripted of course and once again, extolling their knowledge and why the viewer should book with them.

The JUICE is Here There’s one place where you can truly up the level of JUICE and that’s the video of you on tour, doing what you love to do and visiting the places you enjoy the most. Think National Geographic. Think Rick Steves. Think Richard Attenborough. Learn from the pros as to how they script themselves when on camera. Not to be too polished, but enough to deliver the right message without the un‐cued curse word slipping in. iPhone JUICE Your smartphone can be your best friend when it comes to capturing video that you can repurpose and use in your JUICED UP promotions. As I use an iPhone I’ll focus on this specific device ‐ all you have to do is look for similar add‐ons for your own device. One quick stop along the way is here to download a free eBook. Click on the image and start reading.

Now I have to say, I use my iPhone more as a still and video camera than I do anything else. I have also purchased a selection of extra lenses that fit over your iPhone camera lens.

Don’t Drop It! A crazy design mistake, as I see it, is that so many smart phones do not have a location to install a hand strap or lanyard. These expensive devices should come with a keep it close to me strap of some kind. Anyway – you can purchase them. So here’s a handy gadget that will house your iPhone (any smart phone actually) and once it’s locked in place you can shoot from all sorts of angles. Up, down… around corners even! This unit costs twenty bucks USD. Click the image to check it out online.

you will love this website and the products they offer. I knew Digital Juice waaaay back when they sold a series of transitions for PowerPoint. They have moved on! So as you explore the products on their website you’ll find some are certainly over the top for everyday, basic travel video production – but then again, depending on your own talents, you may want to go big. You download the FREE Juicer and then buy what you want from within the JUICER.

Now all you need to do, is think about your video marketing plan and if it really needs EXTRA JUICE then there is only place to click to and that is DIGITAL JUICE.

This could be and probably is way over the top for your needs however, if you into truly JUICING UP your video content then

Green Screen JUICE! Camtasia 8.1 from Techsmith has a new feature called Remove a Colour and all you need is a blank wall of any colour to film against. After that you can add in the background which might be a still shot of a place you visited or promoting, or it could be a video. You’ll need Windows 7 or higher.

Still with using your smart phone you can see in this image that the set is using a phone as the recording tool. The full studio lighting isn’t really required if there’s plenty of light, however the more professional you want your video to be the more kit you’ll need. You can check out the Green Screen tool here: Clip That JUICED UP Video Once you have your video content in the can you’ll be wanting to edit it. No need to go much farther than the AVS4YOU Video Editor or you can use what’s in your computer already. Windows Movie Maker and Windows Live Movie Maker are, or should be resident in your PC. Look under Programs and check them out. With you video imported into the editor you can look for neat 10 second clips and start clipping. Build a library of these short clips and employ them in your short videos such as the videos you would produce using Animoto. When it comes to video, 10 seconds is a long time if the content is boring, so keep it sharp.

Outsourced JUICE Now the rubber meets the road. If you own and manage the agency then you’ll be doing what you do best. You might need to outsource your video production to a local videographer. Be sure to review their past projects and be prepared to spend. Home Made JUICE If you are home‐based then chances are you have the time to generate the videos you need and want using the tools mentioned in this article. It’s important to dress the part, look the part and learn your script well, but not to the point where you come across as too slick. The Logitech 920 This web cam will reside on top of your current laptop or desktop computer screen. It shoots full HD and 10 mp images. You’ll click on the icon, click on video, watch the countdown, 3‐2‐1 and you are on. Take ONE! With this software you can publish your video there and then, edit it, and then be good to go in minutes to an hour depending on how much animation and transitioning you add in.

So now you are all JUICED UP and ready to show and tell and then show and SELL! Hollywood might come calling so comb your hair on that video! 

You are about to learn one of my secrets. This image, taken from the AVS4YOU website lists each of the AVS products that I use in my day‐to‐day creative marketing efforts. This is one of the best packages that, for one low annual subscription, you can download ALL of the AVS products. What this means to your JUICING UP project is this: you can do it all and AVS has pretty much thought of everything you’ll need to make, edit, convert and generate. It’s an amazing package. Take a look at that box of old travel photographs, or slides, your VHS tapes, Hi8 cassette tapes and perhaps some old paper brochures. All of these can be turned into a digital version and then edited to suit your JUICE IT UP campaign. Sometimes the format of your video camera is not applicable to being used online, so it needs to be converted. That’s when you use the AVS Video Converter 8.3. It’s a brand new version.

Your Choices After you browse to your video file and select it, it will appear in the Input File Name box. Now you can select the Output File Name and location of where your converted video file should go, and then you can select the format you wish to convert to. You can see below that my video is a .wmv which is a Windows Movie Video and I could convert it to AVI, DVD, MP4, MPEG, FLV (Flash), Blu‐ray and then even more in the drop down menu box.

You click the Profile down arrow to view the output / quality choices and make your selection.

Now you click on Convert Now! It’s that easy and that quick. As quick as it takes to convert which is only a few minutes for a large multi‐gigabyte file.

The AVS Ringtone Maker Let’s talk about all those smart phones out there. Wouldn’t it be nice if your number was listed in each phone and when you rang them, your clients, your call ringtone was different, juiced up, stood out from the crowd? Yes it would. Next: you can, after you have created your new ringtone, tell your clients to download it and apply it only to your number. So when you ring your client’s smart phone, they know it’s a travel special coming their way! You can juice up your Last Minute Travel Club using a ring tone that the recipient responds to. If you don’t have a Last Minute Travel Club then perhaps you can start one and kick it off with a new, wild and travel crazy ring tone download. PowerPoint to Video Imagine that. Yes. If you have a PowerPoint presentation featuring your latest tour for instance you can also convert those slides to play in a video format. You’ll need to select the PPT format as PowerPoint Show, then set the timings and convert. Narration can be added too if you wish. Add a music theme. It’s all there waiting for your creativity. Animoto to WMV Many times I will create an Animoto video and then convert it to a Windows Movie Video format. Animoto can convert and upload to YouTube, however you cannot get between the upload and YouTube. Using AVS you can convert to a YouTube format and then edit it before you upload it. Okay. That’s it for AVS. Wonderful tools. Take a look below. I have set up a link to get you right to the page I’ve shown you above. Here’s a special offer from AVS. It’s the one I purchased. SLOGANEERING is a skill that the travel trade is very good at. It’s a craft to pen a slogan that causes the reader to think about that destination and to drool over the images that support the attention getting slogan. It’s like a spiced up JUICY drink. It’s inviting and tastes so good – so good in fact you want another and you want to share this with your friends, too. When you need and want a slogan there is only one place to look and that’s the brochures of your preferred suppliers and their websites too. Most travel brochures carry tour titles, and supporting verbiage to help sway the reader into taking the next step and inquiring followed by booking. Knowing and trusting the words in your suppliers brochures will deliver 50% of what you need. Now you must repurpose the slogans you are capturing and add your own tag lines. Your slogan should be short and memorable. However in some cases the slogan can go on for two or three lines of text. Whatever works. You may have to try various configurations before you land on the best one. Here’s a book from my library that I refer to quite often. The original book was Words That Sell. You might also want to start a slogan file and start to capture any slogan no matter travel or otherwise and file it away for reference. That’s it. Juice up your slogans and you’ll juice up your client list.

Similar to a screensaver, however the wallpaper is constant and will sit resident on your clients computer screen, each day every day. On top of this wallpaper image will be your client’s ‘shortcuts’ – which would be small icons that when clicked are a shortcut to various programs in their computer such as Microsoft Word or their photography editing software. This is an important point to think about when designing & creating a promotional wallpaper as your client will want to see their icons and not have them blend in or be washed out by your wallpaper. Below is a screenshot of my own desktop – showing a wallpaper that is an image I created for personal use. Over that wallpaper you can see that my quick access, shortcuts, images and downloads are visible. I use my desktop every day to quickly store what I am working on or capture online. At the day’s end I delete most of them which then reveals the wallpaper image. It works for me. Then again we all use our desktop differently and your clients may only have a few icons showing, which means your promotional wallpaper will show through in all it’s glory!

It’s best if you create your wallpaper using your own images and add a slogan to them. Once again remembering that your clients will need space for their own icons and shortcuts. You can create and design and produce a series of wallpapers and if you want to truly use them a promotional tool

then after each group departure, you would follow up with a ‘thank you’ wallpaper and send it out to all group tour participants to download and gawk at on their PCs. So they just arrived home. A week later arrives an email with your wallpaper attached and in

seconds it’s downloaded and your clients are now staring at it “wishing I was back there!” If you do not have the kind of imagery you’ll need to create your promotional wallpaper you can look for those juicy wallpapers right here at HD WALLPAPERS. That’s one source.

The wallpapers found on the National Geographic website are wonderful and you can gather your ideas there, too.

What you’ll want to do to truly JUICE UP your marketing is to stick to your own images and if you are presentable, images with you in them. Images of your clients enjoying themselves also works. It’s nice to look at a scene that’s empty of people, but once I awhile the ‘me too’ image will garner more sales for you.

Look for more travel wallpaper vendors by searching for just that “travel wallpapers” and up will pop all sorts of opportunities. Before you do that, you may wish to check in with your suppliers and ask if they can provide you with attention getting images. Look for new tools here too: http://stardustsoftware.com/ http://iscreensaver.com/features.shtml

Here I am at the signpost for TUK’… if I were you I’d be adding a “Come with me…” slogan to this image and sending it out as a wallpaper and a pre-sell for my new tour of Northern Canada. Over to you to get the JUICER in motion! 

Here’s a great opportunity to tap into all your client’s social connections and have them spread the word for you. That word would be that you are their travel agent and you can handle anyone’s travel needs. You’ll want to turn your clients into VPAs – Virtual Promotional Ambassadors and for them to do that, you’ll need a WIIFM sweetner such as a small discount, a special supplier promotion, an upgrade… or pay a referral fee such as an affiliate would earn for click through revenue. That means when a friend of your client books with you, you pay your client, your VPA a commission. Planning The Plan There are a number of ways to JUICE up your referrals and by going virtual you can tap into your clients social connections and with the hope that they will take your promotion viral. You’ll need a plan and you’ll need software if you intend to do this on a large scale. If you own and operate a travel agency with 1,000 clients of more then chances are you’ll need some serious program to capture and track results. The simple plan is to have your clients work their magic via their social connections and then advise you, as in refer directly, their friends name and email address. Pretty simple. Signing Up Your VPAs You’ll need to do some recruiting and put out a call to action to attract the clients on your list who would like to participate. It is a WIIFM world as you know, so you’ll need to have your perks or commission plan ready to show and tell. Keeping it simple is the best way to go and that means a cash response to the client making the referral, when their friend has booked and flown and not requested a refund of any kind.

Supplying The Marketing Materials Here’s where the JUICE starts to flow. You’ll need to provide your VPAs with information that they can forward to their friends or, you can supply images that ‘say it all’ and have your VPAs upload them to their social networks. Getting The Message Out The best way to get this message out, is just the way your preferred suppliers get their messages to you, so that you can mention it to your clients. That channel is email and or an e-newsletter which, as your VPAs sign up, they subscribe to. Your e-newsletter describes the promotion and how to use, upload what you send them. Referral Materials  Send out a simple script your VPAs can add to their emails.  Send a ready to forward e-flyer.  Generate a Tweet they can reTweet.  Offer a video they can post anywhere.  Create a Facebook timeline image in the correct size they can upload.

The Facebook Timeline Image

The above template image is found in The Logo Creator 6.6 where you can select from 30 or more Facebook layouts then add, change or create from scratch. You can also accomplish something similar using your own images and cropping to the correct size of 850 x 315 pixels. Your suppliers will also have images and scripts you can repurpose with their approval and forward to your VPAs. Once you’ve completed your promotion you can email it to your VPAs or upload to your private VPA page on your website accessible only by password. What Will You Pay For a Referral? If you explore the commissions from various affiliate, click through and referral programs you will find the commission ranging from a few dollars to say 20% and in some cases 50% of the sale. The level of commission depends on the product being sold and the pricing of course. Some products are subscription based and so vendor is banking on the continuation of that subscription once the referred person signs up. Referrals and The Science of Sharing One of the greatest ways to engage VPAs and employ social sharing is to make you’re your VPAs feel like insiders. In other words

you need to make them feel like they are part of a special club or have some sort of status that nobody else has. We all trust our friends over TV ads and the slick voiced actor / presenter and the recommendations our friends make are usually based on a been there, tried that, seen that, ate there etc., knowledge base. It’s the same with this VPA concept. Your client has done business with you. They like you, they like the service, they had a great time. They would love to benefit from supporting you and sending you referrals. A Free EBook on the Topic Here’s an excellent 29 page eBook on the topic of referral marketing and it presents six key points. Click the link to read it. 

So you thought screensavers were passé eh? No longer used. Well here we are with the latest 5.2 version of !Easy Screen Saver Station. Before we take a look at this program and why you might want to use it to JUICE UP your marketing, better understand what a screensaver is and does versus a wallpaper. Wallpaper is the picture or background you see when you start your computer. A screensaver runs when your computer (screen) is idle. The length of time your computer needs to be idle before the screensaver starts is determined by the user and set up by the user. Below is the interface for the !East Screen Saver Station and you’ll browse to an image that you wish to use and then edit it by adding text, you can once you are into the program, add music and even transitions through various scenes.

In the screen shot above I have created a standard reminder that ABC Travel is ready and waiting to take your booking. Standard old stuff. So what else could you add to this screen saver to make it a keeper? Perhaps it might go viral with the write stuff. Who Wants Or Needs A Screensaver And What Are They For? Given the fact that you have a client base, each person might appreciate a reminder of who you are and what you do. Then you might segment your client base into corporate of you have any accounts, your leisure clients which could then be broken down into cruisers and land based to sun, sand and sea groupings. What else? How about groups and niche? Each segment could use a screensaver – but what will it say?

As you know we all have a screensaver. Typically it comes with the computer thanks to Windows and when your machine is idle, the screensaver will ‘save the screen’ from burnout. Many of your clients will have their own screensaver and might well be using an image of their own choice, perhaps from their own travels. As a screensaver is not a constantly on view, it only shows up when the screen is idle, your screensaver should or could be a sales tool that promotes an upcoming event, or as mentioned, serves as a reminder to book travel, enjoy travel, to take time and plan a trip. Here are other uses where a screensaver might prove effective for you: Meetings During client or corporate account meetings why not have a custom branded screen saver running as a backdrop to your meeting? When you stop selling, the screen on your laptop idles and up pops your screensaver that’s still promoting. Consumer Events / Travel Shows Set up your booth, open your laptop and let the screensaver do some selling and telling for you. Set it to display your core message and let it attract the right people to chat with you.

Offer a screensaver as a free download from your website, or email it to your clients. If it contains something useful then users will install it and your messages will be featured each day. A screensaver is very simple to install, with a simple double-click. Ideas For Screensaver Content 1. Company logo / animated 2. List of services 3. Description of new vacations 4. Contact details 5. Handy travel hints and safety tips relevant to what you are selling. 6. Destination Galleries 7. Feature your latest tour 8. Call to action slogans There are many screensaver software programs so make sure you do your due diligence and check them all out. If you are looking for a sideline, you can also create and sell your glorious screensavers to your clients for $20 or more… OR, you might offer to promote your preferred suppliers on your screensavers for a fee. You can perhaps add a musical theme, a national anthem, you on the spoons! Whatever works, works! Check around as to who offers screen savers – such as Norway.

Uniform Agency Appearance If you operate a travel agency that consumers visit, why not have a customer screensaver running on all PCs to give a uniform appearance and a professional look and sales message. In House Training Messages A screensaver can be used for training purposes in-house and to reinforce standard procedures in and around the office. Your Promotional Message Goes Viral

Also many other travel destinations, brands and companies like National Georgraphic – but theirs is more wallpaper then screensaver. 

My TA Ng (travel agent next generation) is on the move. She has since taken up other tools, gadgets, devices, gizmos and apps to help her sell more travel. She has looked around to discover what new and exciting social and tech tools are available to her and also she’s studied the existing social networks and the changes that are happening there, too. She is not really interested in simple show & tell – she’s in business to make money. She wants to generate higher commissions, make more money and socialize to monetize. Her clients know this too. She doesn’t spam anyone and the lines of communication are clear. Sign up, opt-in, follow, fan, friend, pin, share and paste if you want to receive the best and latest travel information from wherever she is. She grows her client base through social referrals she likes to call ref-virals®. She’ll ask her clients to share her video content and mention her name and promote her skills and they do it. So let’s go find her. Where is she? Okay, she’s over in Hawaii right now and she is there because she likes the sun, sand and sea style of vacation. She is a sensible sunbather. Before heading outside she has applied her applicable sunscreen and downloaded her UV Alert App so she will never burn. At the right time, her iPhone will beep and let her know she has had enough sun. This app is also one that she tells her sun-loving clients about so they remain in good health and continue to book with her. After a little sun tanning then she is off for a stroll along the beach. She used to carry a video camera, and then switched to using her smart phone however now she’s putting

on her You-Vision Video Glasses. After inserting a 16GB micro SD card she’s good to go video. As she walks she’s videoing what she’s looking at. When she returns to her room she’ll voice over the video and post it. At $149 these video glasses are much cheaper than others and they do the job. Video is the in thing and she knows it. It’s the main thing and she knows this too. Video is full multi media and once shot, well, you can capture stills using SnagIt, you can add audio, music, embed it into your website, upload to your digital magazine, your social networks and even insert it into your email. She has everything she needs to create her fully interactive digital Joomag magazine. She is well informed about her 15 minutes of fame and has had quite a few of them – but life in the TA Ng lane is fast and getting faster, so now she’s after her six seconds of fame. She’s on Vine and trip clipping to perfection. In six seconds she has learned how to tell you a story and why you should be joining her next group to Hawaii. She can boost response using a hashtag and she does

that too via her Twitter account. Some of her videos will be pinned to her board at Pintrest where her client/followers will receive updates to their home-feed. If you wants more air / video time she’ll switch to using the 15 second video clip on Instagram.

To stay up to date on what to do with her website she reads Website Magazine. She also reads the blogs of the social sites she uses to stay connected. TA Ng is always NEXT GENERATION.

Staying On Top of this lot is NOT what a TA Ng does.

As our TA Ng movies with the times and focuses on using video as her preferred tool for communicating her travels, skills and what she has for sale, she looks only for the best platforms that will showcase her videography. She also concentrate on a small number of social media outlets keeping email as her number one, because it still is number one when it comes to communicating in the digital world. Something else she learned is to focus and study her social media choice so that she will become an expert at using it and applying it and turning this social tool into a money making enterprise. She is not afraid to engage and sell and she is confident in her ability to do this and her confidence comes from knowing she is very good at what she does.

Become a TA Ng. Learn the latest tools and apply them today!

Here’s your next read, at home or when travelling – written by travel industry veteran, explorer, speaker, author Anthony Dalton. I’ve known Tony since 1978 and he is the real deal. When it comes to exploits he has actually done them as told in his book “Adventures With Camera & Pen”. More about Tony’s books right here: http://www.anthonydalton.net/ THE STORY… Canadian zoologist Gray Pendennis is pushing his limits. Desperate to find and protect a man-eating Royal Bengal tiger in a Bangladesh jungle, he is on a race against time as two bereaved fathers, whose daughters were killed by the striped predator, team up to hunt the menace. Working far from civilization, the three men are on a collision course beyond the boundaries of conscience. The rogue tiger’s kills escalate and the zoologist’s work is complicated by his fascination for a beautiful woman and her underwater archaeologist usband as they too join the hunters and the hunted where the forest meets the Bay of Bengal. mangrove – a high-ranking military officer – A poacher throws himself into the mix, adding another, deadlier force to the potent equation. The tiger, top of the food chain in his environment, uses stealth and cunning to gain the advantage, only to lose it as nature darkens the world.

We are LIVE! Hey, want to liven up your MARKETING JUICE then why not take a look at everything labelled “LIVE” in Windows and OFFICE? Here’s a great feature in Windows Live Mail. A ready, set, go Photo Email. Here you can choose your images and bingo bango your email will automatically be turned into an album which you can then title, click and send.

With the new ‘ribbon’ layout now featured in Microsoft Office program you can overlook some of the tabs and what’s behind the down-arrow. Sometimes we’re just too busy to look and or test things out. This Photo email button is right there, located at the top left on the Windows Live Mail ribbon. I used Outlook and retain is as my default email program however thought I’d check into Windows Live Mail and very glad I did re this ready to send Photo email. You click on the Photo email button and you are prompted to Browse to and select the photos you wish to send. When done your email will populate with your selection and then create a photo album like you see opposite. You then name the album and add your text and calls to action and then send off to your selected client folder. A link is created on Windows Skydrive and so your email recipient will view your album online as opposed to downloading large files.
