French authorities on the island of Mayotte have suspended all ferry services linking the island with the rest of the Comoran archipelago due to safety negligence. Already, flight connections between Mayotte and Comoros are restricted, giving further blows to the planned development of tourism and trade in Comoros. Mayotte, which is a Comoran island that insists on remaining French, is the major site of arrivals of foreign tourists to the archipelago, given its relatively good international connections. Many visitors to Comoros have used Mayotte as an entrance point for island hopping on the archipelago. This option has now been barred by the French maritime authorities in Mayotte. According to local reports, the Comoran ferry connecting Mayotte and Grande Comore has been prohibited accessing the port of Dzaoudzi. Authorities for a long time had tolerated security flaws of the ferries, but continuous failures to comply with French standards finally saw the service suspended. The reaction by Mayotte authorities comes after the 1 December accident on the ferry ‘Ville de Sima’, which was partly destroyed by a fire as it approached ht coast of Mayotte. This prompted maritime authorities to launch an inspection on the remaining ferries, which by far did not meet safety standards. Other passenger ferry services between Mayotte and Comoros had been closed for the same reasons earlier this year. For the economic development of newly stabilised Comoros, the closure of one of the last connections with Mayotte is a major setback. The ferry services were important for trade between the islands and for the slowly developing tourism sector. The suspension comes in addition to other setbacks in the infrastructure sector. Flights between Mayotte and Comoros have been stopped by Mahorais authorities for most of the last decade to prevent the substantial illegal immigration from Comoros. Equally, there are very few flights connecting the Comoran capital Moroni with the outside world. The national airliner, Air Comore, was crippled by a disastrous attempt to

News From Arab Market privatise it in the end-1990s. Air France suspended its services to Moroni in 1997 and with the end of Air Comore, few connections remain. Most international connections now go via the French island of Réunion or via other regional airports. In November this year, everything was going to change, with ambitious plans by Réunion’s second airliner, Air Bourbon. Together with capital from Comoros and France, it was to launch the new Comoran carrier Air Comores International, based in Moroni. Air Comores was to connect Moroni directly to Paris, Marseille, Mayotte, Réunion, Mauritius and Dubai. On 27 November, however, after the plans to launch Air Comores International already were delayed, Air Bourbon went bankrupt. The Reunionese company had invested too much, too rapidly in its ambition to become the Indian Ocean’s principal airliner. Comoran authorities are looking for new investors to take the place of Air Bourbon, but have so far not been successful. One of the main aims of the new Comoran airliner had been to promote the “immediate development of the economy and the tourism sector” of the Comoran archipelago. Comoros remains the Indian Ocean destination less developed for tourism, while neighbouring nations such as Seychelles, Mauritius and Réunion have become wealthy on the tourism industry. Political turbulence, including around 20 coups and coup attempts since independence, has been the major reason for Comoros’ failure to develop its tourism potential. As the new Comoro Union, with ample autonomy for the archipelago’s three islands, is now established and political stability is planned for, Comoros aims at copying the tourism successes of its neighbours.

SITA’s Airport Management Solution helps integrate and simplify operations management so the airport has a single control point and can take action as needed. This includes an advanced resource management tool, AirportResource Manager, which enables the airport to manage resources and equipment in real time and make sure they are available when and where they are needed. The plane, with 224 passengers on board, resumed its flight to Amman after a two-hour delay in Montreal. Royal Jordanian strives to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers, which is a priority for the airline despite the high cost incurred in case of emergency landings, due to additional fuel consumption and the airport landing and take-off fees and over flying charges.

Lebanon, Turkey to Restart Baghdad flights Turkish Airlines and Lebanon’s Middle East Airlines (MEA) resumed flights to Baghdad after halting them earlier in the week when bullets hit a plane as it was landing in the Iraqi capital. An MEA official and the Turkish Airlines website confirmed that both carriers, which provide daily flights to Baghdad, had resumed service. At least seven airlines suspended flights to Baghdad following the shooting incident. flydubai, Emirates, Air Arabia and Etihad Airways suspended flights in line with a directive from the United Arab Emirates’ civil aviation authority. A flydubai spokesman said its service would remain suspended until February 2, whilst an official at Air Arabia said he was not aware of any changes to the suspension. There was no immediate word from the other carriers. A message on Qatar Airways’ website on Thursday said service between Doha and Baghdad had been suspended until February 5 with resumption subject to daily review. Iraqi Transport Minister Bayan Jabor said the plane operated by budget carrier flydubai was hit at an altitude of 600 metres (2,000 feet) by gunfire from what he said was likely a light machine gun.

News From Arab Market At ITB Berlin the minister presented her plans for the coming five years. Besides beach tourism, which remains the mainstay of the tourism market, her aim is to establish alternative tourism. The focus here is on tours with the historical train line through the country’s interior and on the Festival Les Dunes Electroniques, which this February attracted 5,000 visitors to the Sahara. The music festival is set amid sand dunes in Neftastatt close to the original location where filming of the Star Wars saga took place. Thalasso therapy, city and cultural tourism are among other areas intended to attract more visitors. In the wake of the 2011 popular uprising against the dictatorship tourist numbers collapsed. According to the Tunisian Tourist Board, in 2014 figures rose by 0.3 per cent compared to 2013. During the travel season in August and September visitor numbers even exceeded those of 2010, the year before the outbreak of the revolution. In 2014 Tunisia was visited by 425,648 tourists from Germany, which after France was the second most important source market. The minister said that safety was her government’s utmost priority and noted that “visitors and locals must be safe and feel safe.“ She pointed out that in recent years there had not been a single attack on tourists.
Turkey The Best Things to See and Do in Istanbul
In Brief Leyla Taskin

Long the meeting pot of east and west, Istanbul is a city straddling the continents of Europe and Asia and acts as such. Towering minarets raised during the Ottoman era sit amongst Roman, Greek, Persian and Venetian Ozgur Balci

structures, all of which have been preserved alongside the modern Turkish second city’s contemporary high rises and skyscrapers. For the traveller, this delightful mix of ancient and modern makes for an amazing trip, but with so much to do and see in Istanbul, which destinations truly stand out? Here are some of the best things Istanbul has to offer to travellers. Istanbul has a huge number of ancient, near-mythic structures, all representing the city’s various epochs of civilisation. The Basilica Cistern, constructed in the Sixth century during the height of the Byzantine Empire (successor to the ancient Roman empire) runs beneath the city, and is a surprisingly romantic place for what was originally a system of tunnels that moved water from modern-day Bulgaria to the city. Now fitted with lights and music, juxtaposed with flitting fish that play around the 336 columns that support the structure’s ceiling, the Cistern must be seen to be believed. The Hagia Sofia is another relic of the city’s past, and one of the world’s most recognisable structures. Construction began in 537, the basilica serving the Greek Orthodox Church, and later it was used as an imperial mosque during the Ottoman era, but today the structure is a museum to its varied past. The building is a magnificent sight, surrounded by dreamy spires and topped by the original Byzantine dome. If you’re looking for excitement, Istanbul has all manner of electrifying amenities that one can peruse. The Cratos Premium Casino, featuring hundreds of tables and slots, is a beauty, oozing elegance and charm. Want to make a little spending money during your trip? Make sure you head to Ruby Fortune on your flight over; the site has all manner of casino games that you can play to boost your skills ahead of the main event! Istanbul has it’s fair share of souky shopping opportunities, and the Sultanahmet District is by far the best place to indulge in a little shopping. Winding streets, stores and a grand bazaar await visitors, and the area holds a huge number of delicious Turkish food establishments where one can sample all manner of tasty delights! For more expensive tastes, the Milka restaurant, located in the centre of the city, is internationally renowned; try their shoulder of lamb cooked for 24 hours with pomegranate molassestruly delicious!

Air Arabia Awards from Oman’s airports operator Air Arabia, the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier, announced today that it has been recognised in two categories of the prestigious Annual Oman Airport Management Company (OAMC) Awards. The awards, which took place at the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa in Muscat, honour the most successful airlines and retailers operating at Muscat and Salalah’s international airports. Air Arabia was honoured for the enormous success of its Salalah operations. The first award recognised the total number of passengers carried by Air Arabia to the popular Omani tourism destination in 2014, while the second marked the significant percentage growth in these figures over the past year. Air Arabia was the first UAE airline to offer services to the city of Salalah when it began a weekly service in June 2012. Following strong passenger demand, within a year, it had increased operations to three flights per week.

Yemen Yemen Promotes Tourism in Socotra Island Despite the conflicts in Yemen, the government plans to revive its tourism. In this context, the government is seeking to lure both local and international tourists to its Socotra Island — a safe haven compared to other Yemen destinations. It lies some 240 kilometers east of the Horn of Africa and 380 kilometers south of the Arabian Peninsula. The island is very isolated and a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. The island measures 132 kilometers in length and 49.7 kilometers in width. Yemeni Minister of Tourism Moamar Al-Aryani assured that no terrorist groups will control the island. Only one location in Yemen has been specified as a safe destination for international tourism which is Socotra island. The island is among the top 10 world islands with unique and diverse flora and fauna. The government of Yemen is seeking the help of the Arab Tourism Organization to convince not only tourists but also investors to trust Yemen. Tourism in Yemen constitutes 3% of the GDP and the government seeks to increase it to reach 10% and 20% in a later stage. The current situation in Yemen as if it is a “piece of cloth that is torn apart” and hoped the new constitution will provide a “new cloth” that Yemen can put on and move on in its strategic plans. The current security issues in the country have increased unemployment and decreased the hotel booking. This drove Yemen to focus more on local tourism and convince Yemenis living abroad to visit their home country along with the families.

What to visit at Asian side of Istanbul There are two main district in Asian side of Istanbul. Kadıköy and Üsküdar. There are lots of scheduled ferries from European side to both districts in 24 hours. You can also use Bosphorus bridges by car and taxis. Üsküdar Üsküdar is the old Anatolian side of Istanbul, the former suburb of Scutari. While most of the Anatolian side is largely newer and a side from a few buildings here and there, dates from the late-19th century and up, with the largest part by far being later 20th century, Üsküdar has a lot of old buildings and is similar to the old city.
and the area around it is called Asian Bosphorus. The castle was constructed by Sultan Beyazit in the year 1395 as a watch tower and this was a part of his preparations to annex the Constantinople area. The castle underwent many changes in architecture and thus looks different from its original design. The Turkish government took over the restoration processes and today it stands as a museum, however it is not available for public viewing.
Mihrimah Sultan Mosque
Beylerbeyi Palace It was used as the summer palace of the Ottoman sultans. It was ordered by the Sultan Abdulaziz and built between 1861-1865 by head architects Sarkis Balyan and Agop Balyan, imperial architects of Armenian origins, in French neo-baroque style with a traditional Ottoman house plan. Important foreign guests visiting the Ottoman Empire were accommodated in this palace during the summer months. It can be considered as a smaller version of Dolmabahce Palace, but due to its limited seasonal use, it had no great importance. The palace has a rectangular plan with the long side facing the Bosphorus. There are 6 large halls and 24 rooms on two floors raised on a service basement which was originally used as a kitchen and storage. The palace is divided into mens’ section (Selamlik) and womans’ section (Harem) having separate entrances for both. The Selamlik was used for State functions therefore was very ornate, meanwhile the Harem was reserved only to the ladies and with a simple decoration. The palace gardens are available for private receptions upon advance application to the Ministry of Tourism.
Küçüksu Mansion It takes place in Kücüksu in İstanbul. It is on seaside and 10km far from Üsküdar. It is between Kücüksu and Göksu watercourses in the Bosphorus. It was built in 1856 by Nigoğos Balyan with direction of Sultan Abdülmecit. It is a mansion in which the Sultans rest. They do not live in that mansion continuously, they only rest in there. That magnificent building was a boarding mansion used for rest and hunting. You can’t take photograph inside the mansion , but you can find and buy some photographs of both inside and outside of the Küçüksu Mansion.

Among the first things you see upon arriving by ferry at Üsküdar are the two mosques on either side of the ferry port, both designed by famous architect Sinan. The larger one is the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, sometimes called the Iskele (Dock) Mosque, built by a daughter of Süleyman the Magnificent; the smaller one is the Şemsi Pasha Mosque, which was built in 1581 by a vizier of Süleyman’s. The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque built between 1546 and 1548 and is a massive structure on a raised platform and already shows several hallmarks of Sinan’s mature style: a spacious, high-vaulted basement, slender minarets, a single-domed baldacchino flanked by three semidomes ending in three exedra and a broad double portico.
Yeni Valide Mosque This large mosque is just inland on the left as you arrive by ferry in Uskudar. It was built between the 1708 and 1710 by Emetullah Rabia Gülnüş Sultan, mother of Sultan Ahmed III. The main part of the building is square in shape and covered with a flattened main dome and four half

Çamlıca Hill Çamlıca Hill stands about four kilometers east of Uskudar and can be reached by car. It is the highest point in the vicinity of Istanbul, 267 meters above sea level. It has a small teahouse in the midst of the pine grove which gives the peak its name. From here, there is an absolutely magnificent view, which makes it well worth the climb. In the morning when the sun is still easterly one has a panoramic sight of the whole city, the Bosphorus almost as far as the Black Sea, the Marmara Sea with the Princes Islands, and behind that, the great snow covered ridge of Uludag, the Bithynian Olympus. Toward evening the sun sets almost directly behind Istanbul and its domes and minarets are silhouetted against the flaming western sky like a splendid stage drop.

What to visit at European side of Istanbul Blue Mosque Known as the ‘Sultan Ahmet Mosque’ by local people, it was built by Sultan Ahmet in 1609 and completed in 7 years, although foreigners have taken to calling it the ‘ Blue Mosque ‘ because of the beautiful blue Iznik tiles decorating the interior. The architect who oversaw its design was Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, better known as a student of Sinan (the greatest architect ever seen in the Ottoman Empire). Not only was it built to serve as a mosque, but its huge surrounding complex also held a

In this courtyard there are three important buildings: Aya Eirine (the Church of Divine Peace), the mint / outer treasury of the Ottoman Empire and the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. The second courtyard served as the official section of the palace, holding the imperial kitchens, bakery, storage rooms and the divan (chamber of the Viziers). The third courtyard opens with the Arz Odasi (audience hall for visitors to the Sultan). There are also rooms of the Enderun (palace school), and various sections displaying the ceremonial dresses of the Ottoman Sultans, holy relics, the portraits of the sultans, a library and the Treasury. The fourth court is more of a garden than a courtyard, built on varying levels decorated by kiosks or pavilions. The Baghdad and Revan Pavilions, Mecidiye Kosk and a mosque can all be found here.
Yerebatan Cistern medrese (theological school), turbe (tomb), hospital, caravaserai, primary school, public kitchen and market, although the hospital and caravanserai were destroyed in the nineteenth century. After the public kitchens were destroyed in a fire in 1970, they were restored and incorporated into the School of Industrial Art. It presently serves as the Dean’s Office for the Marmara University.
Saint Sophia
This massive 6th century building is the third church to be built at the same location. The first church was built in 360 AD but burnt down in 404, during the reign of Constantinus. The second was erected between the years 404-415, but shared the same fatal destiny as the first one, burning down during the Nika revolt in 532, during the reign of Justinian. After these riots, a new structure (the current one standing) was ordered from two famous architects - Isidorus and Anthemeios. It was completed and opened to the public on December 26th in 537, on the St. Stephen’s day. However, the dome collapsed twenty years later and it had to be rebuilt by the nephew of the first architect. He opened up the dome by giving it 40 windows along its parameter. Although there were partial collapses of the dome in 989 and 1346, the shape of the dome today remains as it was then. It served as a church until the city was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under the leadership of Mehmet II. Once he took power, he gave the order to convert the church into a mosque. After this conversion, Islamic additions were made inside and outside. The minarets, a mihrab, mimber, muezzin’s lodge, sultan’s lodge and library are all from this period. In 1935, twelve years after Turkish Republic had been established, by the order of Kemal Ataturk it became a museum and remains so today. Aya Sofya, the Church of Divine Wisdom, stands as one of the landmarks of the city.
Topkapı Palace When the city was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, Mehmet II, the Conqueror, did not take to the Byzantine Palaces, so he built his own palace where the main buildings of Istanbul University currently stand. This palace is now known as the old palace (eski saray) as it was soon in disuse. Sultan Mehmet began to build Topkapi Palace in 1459 including the Harem and the fourth courtyard. The rest of the palace was built 6 years later. He adjusted the Byzantine city walls around the walls of the palace. In fact, the palace takes its name from the main sea gate in these defensive walls (‘Topkapi’ = Canon Gate). The palace is mainly divided into four courtyards: The first courtyard is known as the courtyard of the Janissaries, who acted as one of the branches of the Ottoman army. They were formed from boys

Yerebatan Cistern was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. It is situated close to the Haghia Sophia entrance, across the street and the tramway lines. It is a huge cistern, it has 143 x 65 meters and 336 columns. There are three spots that are particularly popular, two Medusa heads supporting columns (one of them is a spot where people will throw coins in, hoping to return someday), another is a column with a peacock feather motive (compare the columns lying along the road near the Laleli tramway stop) where someone had the bright idea of suggesting that putting your finger in a little hole and turning your hand will make a wish come true. The cistern was used as a location for the 1963 James Bond film From Russia with Love.
Süleymaniye Mosque Built by the greatest architect of the Ottoman Empire - Sinan, between 1550 -1557, Suleymaniye Mosque stands as undoubtedly his greatest work in Istanbul. Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, who enjoyed the longest reign in the Ottoman Empire, between 1520-1566, gave the order for its construction. The mosque also holds the tombs of the Sultan and his lover Hurrem (Roxelana).
Galata Tower Galata Tower has dominated Beyoğlu’s skyline since 1348 and still offers the best panoramic views of the city. Above, the Golden Horn, Seraglio Point and Old Istanbul as seen from Galata Tower Originally named the Tower of Christ, it was the highpoint in the city walls of the Genoese colony called Galata. Most of the walls are long gone, but the great tower remains. Until the 1960s it was a fire lookout tower. Now the upper floors hold an uninteresting restaurant-nightclub, and a panorama balcony. The panorama balcony, encircling the highest row of windows, is narrow, open to the weather, and not recommended for anyone suffering from acrophobia (fear of heights).

Built in 1452 by Sultan Mehmet II prior to the conquest of Istanbul, his aim was to block any possible sea support which might have come from the Black Sea to assist the flailing Byzantines. Therefore, it was to be situated on the narrowest point of the Bosphorus strait, facing another smaller fortress already erected on the Asian side. The construction work finished after 4 months and 19 days. Now it serves as a museum, displaying the canons that were used during the conquest. There is also an outdoor mini-amphi-theater used during the various music festivals in Istanbul.

The Spice Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar (Covered Bazaar) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with more than 58 covered streets and over 4,000 shops which attract between 250,000 and half a million visitors daily The grand bazaar began construction in 1455 and opened in 1461. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by the type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. The bazaar contains two bedestens (domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The bazaar was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and in 1894 underwent a major restoration following an earthquake. Today, the grand bazaar houses two mosques, two hamams, four fountains, and multiple restaurants and cafes. The sprawling complex consists of 12 major buildings and has 22 doors.

The Spice Bazaar, (Egyptian Bazaar) in Istanbul, is one of the oldest bazaars in the city. Located in Fatih, in the neighborhood of Eminönü, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. There are several documents suggesting the name of the bazaar was first “New Bazaar”. However, due to the fact that many spices were imported via Egypt in the Ottoman period, the name “Mısır Çarşısı” was favored by the public. The word mısır has a double meaning in Turkish: “Egypt” and “maize”. This is why sometimes the name is wrongly translated as “Corn Bazaar”. The bazaar was (and still is) the center for spice trade in Istanbul.
