Djibouti Ethiopia – Djibouti Railway officially inaugurated The completion of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, a new 752km track linking Ethiopia’s capital with the Port of Djibouti, was officially marked at a ceremony at Nagad Railway Station in Djibouti. The new railway can reach speeds of 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for cargo trains. It will cut cargo journey times between the Port of Djibouti and Addis Ababa from three days by road to just 12 hours. Trial services for the new US$4.2 billion railway began in October 2016, with regular services transporting goods and passengers expected to begin early this year. The railway is a major milestone for trade in the region. Currently, more than 90% of Ethiopia’s trade passes through Djibouti, accounting for 70% of the overall activity at Djibouti’s ports. With Africa’s GDP predicted to double by 2035, and the population expected to reach 2.5 billion over the next 30 years, the continent is in need of major new infrastructure links. In addition to building links with Djibouti’s port facilities, the railway will support the development of Djibouti’s International Free Trade Zone (DIFTZ), which will help spur the nation’s manufacturing industry and provide employment opportunities for its citizens. The railway project has been coupled with a US$15 billion expansion programme to improve Djibouti’s port facilities, and build new highways and airports in the country. The railway was previously inaugurated from Ethiopia’s side on 5 October 2016. With journeys now also possible from Djibouti, the new railway represents the next step in plans for a 2000km long track that will also connect Djibouti and Ethiopia to South Sudan. The vision is that this could one day evolve into a Trans-African railway crossing the continent from the Red Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, a journey which by sea currently takes eight weeks.

Arabian Travel Market 2017 to focus on sports tourism Sport tourism and the regional leisure industry have become increasingly important drivers for international arrivals to the GCC over recent years, as the GCC competes to capture a greater share of the $600 billion global industry. Hence, sports tourism will be in focus at this year’s Arabian Travel Market. Many countries throughout the region host numerous sporting events such as grands prix, international golf tournaments, swimming, horse racing, sailing, tennis and cricket, with the UAE and Qatar leading the way. In the UAE, the additional visitor numbers generated by major sporting events such as the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Dubai World Cup, will contribute towards achieving the country’s bold plans to attract 20 million visitors to Dubai by 2020 and 7.5 million to Abu Dhabi under its 2030 plans. In Dubai, total annual sports-related expenditure was valued at around $1.7 billion in 2014, according to the recent ‘Economic Impact of Sport in Dubai’ study by Deloitte. The report also found the total economic impact of sport in the emirate stood at a significant $670 million. Gross expenditure on sporting events hit the $709 million mark in 2014 and generated an economic impact of $359 million. In Qatar the additional visitors could push the growth of the travel market from values of QR18 million in 2016 to QR37 million in 2025, at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8%. This growth will peak in 2022 at QR48 million when the Gulf state hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Arab & Turkis Travel Magazine | May 2017 | 15

Inlet of the Bosphorus in Istanbul
The Golden Horn is a historically important area, especially for Turkey's Muslims. The Golden Horn, also known by its modern Turkish name as Haliรง, is a major urban waterway and the primary inlet of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey.

Destination Istanbul estuary's waters as the sun sets over the city. Its Greek and English names mean the same, while its Turkish name, Haliç, simply means "estuary", and is derived from the Arabic word khaleej, meaning "gulf ". Throughout its storied past, the Golden Horn has witnessed many tumultuous historical incidents, and its dramatic vistas have been the subject of countless works of art.
The Golden Horn is a historic inlet of the Bosphorus dividing the city of Istanbul and forming the natural harbor that has sheltered Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and other ships for thousands of years. It is a scimitar-shaped estuary that joins the Bosphorus just at the point where that strait enters the Sea of Marmara, thus forming a peninsula the tip of which is "Old Istanbul" (ancient Byzantion and Constantinople). It’s Greek and English names mean the same, but the significance of the designation "golden" is obscure. It has witnessed many tumultuous historical incidents and its dramatic vistas have been the subject of countless works of art. Legend has it that the Golden Horn got its name during the Fall of Constantinople, when the panicking Greeks hurled the city's treasures into the inlet. During Byzantine times it was closed off with a heavy chain to protect the lightly defended sea walls on the city's north side. Mehmet II the Conqueror literally got around the chain by building greased wooden causeways over the hill behind Galata and having his soldiers pull his fleet along them to the water. The Golden Horn starts from Eminonu and Galata Bridge. This bridge is the heart of Istanbul, spanning the Golden Horn from Karaköy on the north to Old Istanbul, centered on Sultanahmet, on the south. Crossing the bridge you look west toward Europe and east across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and Asia. Right at the northern end is Karaköy (Galata), a Genoese colony during Byzantine times. It is said that Sultan Beyazid II commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a bridge to span the Golden Horn in 1503, only 50 years after the city was captured from the Byzantines. The great artist and engineer did the design, but alas the bridge was never built. The present Galata Bridge, built in 1992, replaced a much-loved pontoon bridge dating from 1912 that gently swayed and rolled as the seas moved beneath it. Passenger ferryboats leave from Karaköy for Kadıkoy. At the southern end is Eminönü, with the Egyptian (Spice) Market, the New Mosque, and Sirkeci station (was terminal for trains from Europe).
Ferries depart the Eminönü docks for Üsküdar, the Bosphorus, and the Princes Islands. Car ferries cross the Bosphorus to Harem, between Üsküdar and Haydarpaşa. Eminönü is Istanbul's crossroads. Located on the south side of the Golden Horn at the southern end of the Galata Bridge, it's a major transportation nexus for trains, trams and buses, and the Eminönü ferry docks are always busy. Besides transport, it has sights: the Egyptian Bazaar, the Yeni Cami – New Mosque-, Central Post Office , Rüstem Pasha Mosque and Sirkeci train tation. It's a major shopping area and has been for centuries. The Byzantines bought their fruits, vegetables and grains here a millennium ago. During the early Ottoman centuries it was the home of a Karaite Jewish colony, who were later moved up the Golden Horn to make way for the building of the Yeni Cami. You can use the Kabataş-Zeytinburnu tram and the many ferryboats, but there are also yellow dolmuş minibuses going to Taksim Square and Nişantaşı. At the far end of the Galata Bridge from Eminönü is Karaköy (Galata), with its own ferry docks, tram and bus lines, and the international cruise ship dock.
At the northern end of the Galata Bridge across Istanbul's Golden Horn lies the district called Karaköy. It's among the city's oldest and most historic districts, and is today an important transportation point, similar to Eminönü, at the opposite end of Galata Bridge. Cruise ships moor at the docks by the Karakoy Passenger Terminal right in the heart of the city. Ferries depart Karaköy for the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, going to both Haydarpaşa train station and Kadıköy. Şehir Hatları ferryboats depart from the dock east of the Galata Bridge. TurYol boats depart from west of the bridge. Although you'll probably get to know Karaköy as a place to board a ferry, ship, tram or the Tünel which is underground train to Istiklal Caddesi, it's also a good place to buy hardArab & Turkis Travel Magazine | May 2017 | 19

Relax in a city: Izmir
Once the ancient city of Smyrna, Ä°zmir is now a modern, developed, and busy commercial center, set around a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. The broad boulevards, glass-fronted buildings and modern shopping centers are dotted with traditional red-tiled roofs, the 18th century market, and old mosques and churches, although the city has an atmosphere more of Mediterranean Europe than traditional Turkey.

Izmir is a relatively safe city for its size, however it does have its "shady" areas. The city center as well as populated suburbs are generally safe during the day. Use common sense if walking at night, avoid dark and narrow alleyways (found mainly in Alsancak and Konak). Be weary in Basmane, though it is fine to stay in hostels in this neighbourhood (the Syrian food will keep you coming
