Turkish tourism to benefit from improving relations with Israel and Russia
Turkey started to improve diplomatic relations with Israel and Russia. The improving ties with both Israel and Russia would have a very positive impact on the tourism sector, despite the current terror attack. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter of apology to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Erdogan he extended condolences to the family of the pilot killed in the November 2015 downing of the Russian warplane in Turkish airspace and expressed interest in the normalisation of relations. In a telephone conversation held on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to work towards the normalisation of bilateral relations. On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister 6 | MeeTurkey | November 2016
Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that Israel’s security cabinet approved on June 29 an agreement with Turkey that will allow the two countries to restore full diplomatic relations following a six-year hiatus. Diplomatic relations between Turkey and
Israel were suspended in 2010 after Israeli forces raided a convoy of aid ships attempting to break the blockade of Gaza, killing nine Turkish activists. Israel will pay $20 million in compensation to the families of the Mavi Marmara victims. Due to regional and global crises, bilateral problems with these countries, and terror attacks Turkey’s tourism industry badly hurt. The number of foreign arrivals to Turkey slumped by 34.7 percent in May compared to the same month of 2015 to 2.49 million, according to data released by the Tourism Ministry on June 28. This marked the steepest decline since the 1990s. The number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey declined by around 92 percent to 41,004 in May compared to the same month of 2015.
With the gradual improvement with Russia and Israel, Turkish tourism industry expects a dramatic rise in the number of tourists. Basaran Ulusoy and Osman Ayik, head of the Travel Agencies Association of Turkey (TÜRSAB) hand the Hoteliers’ Federation of Turkey (TÜROFED) respectively, said that they expect a dramatic rise in the number of Israeli tourists visiting Turkey. Osman Ayik said that the target from this market should be 1 million tourists. Turkish Hoteliers’ Association (TÜROB) President Timur Bayındır said that the improving ties with both Israel and Russia would have a very positive impact on the sector.

Tourists can continue their vacation in Turkey despite State of Emergency
Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TURSAB) released following statement. In light of the declarations by Republic of Turkey, Prime Minister H.E. Binali Yildirim, the security measures throughout Turkey and in major cities like Ankara and Istanbul have been raised to the highest level following recent unfortunate events throughout the country in order to ensure the safety of all civilians. Airports and all touristic facilities are fully functioning and the tourists in Turkey are happily continuing their vacations. In addition to that a 3 months State of Emergency has been declared upon the decision taken by the Turkish Government. However .please rest assure that, this State of Emergency, will not effect the daily life of the civilians, and international travellers. As we see many examples in many countries that this state will neither effect “the freedom of travel,” nor limit our daily routine. Such turbulent events, examples of which we have unfortunately been witnessing more frequently than ever lately throughout the world, not only take innocent lives but also target to scare and thus thwart the global freedom of travel, for which the global travel industry is in dire need to firmly stand together and manifest to the world the utmost
solidarity and fraternity to withstand any menace against the wellbeing of humanity, nations and the travel sector.
We are extremely sure that through such difficult times for our nation and sector, we will not be deprived of your heartfelt support and solidarity. Once again we reiterate our cordial appreciation of your sensitivity on the matter and hope that the fruitful tourism relations between our countries will persevere.

The 1.4 kilometer (0.9 mile) bridge will carry eight lanes of traffic and two rail lines between 10 | MeeTurkey | November 2016
Europe and Asia at the entrance of the Bosphorus to the Black Sea. Named after Selim I, the 16th century sultan known for his expansion of the Ottoman empire, the bridge accompanies the July 15 Matryrs’ Bridge, previously the Bosphorus Bridge, and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge in crossing the Bosphorus. It is the world’s longest suspension rail bridge and will lead to $1.75 billion-a-year in savings through reduced travel times and energy costs. All trucks and heavy-duty vehicles will be directed to the bridge to ease traffic on the other bridges, as well as cut congestion and pollution in Istanbul. The fee for automobiles going from the European to the Asian side of the city will be 9.90 Turkish liras ($3.40). There will be no charge for passage from the Asian to the European side.
In addition, the bridge’s pylons are themselves exceptional in terms of height. The longer of the two pylons is 322 metres tall – only two metres shorter than the Eiffel tower. Renowned French engineer Michel Virlogeux – the designer of the bridge also credited with conceiving the Millau Viaduct in south France and Lisbon’s Vasco da Gama Bridge – toldAgence France Presse,” This bridge puts Turkey among the world leaders, it’s the most spectacular to have been built in the last years.” The 116-km long highway built as part of the Third Bridge and Northern Marmara Highway
Project includes 35 viaducts. The first phase of the highway project was completed by the private sector, which invested an approximate $3 billion, Anadolu Agency reported. The two other phases will involve the construction of highways and linking roads amounting to a total length of 257 km, expected to be completed and available for public use in 2018. Thousands of people flocked over the weekend to take photos at Istanbul’s newest Bosphorus Bridge. As crowds gathered, traffic was blocked both over the bridge and on the connection roads.

Another MICE destination of Turkey Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a population of around 3.7 million, the second biggest port after Istanbul, and a very good transport hub. It is a rapidly growing city on the Central Aegean coast of Turkey. Izmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. It is Turkey’s first port for exports and its free zone, a TurkishU.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader among the twenty that Turkey counts. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa), and under either larger companies or SME’s, affirm their name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity. Izmir is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish 30 | MeeTurkey | November 2016
cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism and gender roles. The Izmir Convention & Visitors Bureau (Izmir CVB) was founded in 2007 by Izmir Tourism Promotion Foundation (IZTAV), as a non-profitable, independent of any marketing structure information exchange bureau. Izmir CVB’s mission is to promote the city’s rich cultural and natural assets and it’s great potential on a national and international level and is seeking guidelines and best practice to develop the city’s congress tourism.
Once the ancient city of Smyrna, İzmir is now a modern, developed, and busy commercial center, set around a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. The broad boulevards, glass-fronted buildings and modern shopping centers are dotted with traditional red-tiled roofs, the 18th century market, and old mosques and churches, although the city has an atmosphere more of Mediterranean Europe than traditional Turkey. The history of Izmir stretches back to around 3000 BC when the Trojans founded the city in Tepekule in the northern suburb of Bayrakli. This was the birthplace of Homer, who was thought to have lived here around the 8th century BC. The Aeolians, the first Greek settlers, were eventually taken over by their Greek rivals the Ionians. The Ionians were followed by November 2016 | MeeTurkey | 31
city and the Greek and Armenian populations were expelled. Ataturk formally took Izmir on 9 September 1922, which is celebrated as the day of the city’s liberation. Izmir is a relatively safe city for its size, however it does have its “shady” areas. The city center as well as populated suburbs are generally safe during the day. Use common sense if walking at night, avoid dark and narrow alleyways (found mainly in Alsancak and Konak). Avoid the streets around the main port as well as the streets around the railway junction (Hilal, Halkapinar). Be weary in Basmane, though it is fine to stay in hostels in this neighbourhood (the Syrian food will keep you coming back). It is important to also be cautious in Kadifekale, which is where one of the city’s main landmarks is located. It is not advisable to travel on foot in the neighborhoods on the south side of the train tracks near the city center at night. Use common sense and you will be relatively safe. If you find yourself in any situation don’t be afraid to call the police (155). Izmir Police Department has a “tourism police” section where travellers can report passport loss and theft or any other criminal activity they may have become victims of. The staff is multilingual and will speak English, German, French, and Arabic.
How to go Adnan Menderes Airport, 16km south of the city centre, has several daily flights to Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya. There are also regular flights from many European cities.

After his death, Alexander’s generals followed his wishes and re-established Smyrna on Mount Pagos in Kadifekale, and the city then prospered under the Romans. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 178 AD but later reconstructed and became a major commercial port during the Byzantine Empire. After the Byzantines, the city had a turbulent time under the Arabs, Seljuks, Crusaders and Mongols, until Mehmet I incorporated it into the Ottoman Empire in 1415. Under Suleyman the Magnificent, Smyrna became a thriving and sophisticated city and a huge trading center, despite its frequent earthquakes. It was a cosmopolitan city , with a Greek Orthodox majority along with Armenians, Jews and Muslims. Numerous languages could be heard in the streets, spoken by locals and visiting traders. Following World War I and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, and on the basis of the majority Greek population in the area, Greece was granted a mandate over Izmir from the Allies. Athens took control over the whole of the Aegean region. Rising tensions led the outbreak of war as the Greeks purshed further into the heart of Anatolia in an attempt to unite the Greek communities of Asia Minor. Led by Kemal Ataturk the Turkish army launched a counter-attack and seized the city. Soon thereafter 70% of the city burned to the ground by the Greek forces. A few paces south of the castle, there is an Ottoman caravanserai built in the early centuries of the Ottoman conquest in 1528 by order of Süleyman the Magnificent, and it is now restored and transformed into a boutique hotel. The imposing but redundant 19th century Greek Orthodox church of Ayios Haralambos is used for temporary exhibitions. Mentioned by Pausanias and Charles Texier, Ilıca thermal springs, which extend well into the sea, are also notable in Turkey for having been the subject of the first scientifically based analysis in Turkish language of a thermal spring, published in 1909 by Yusuf Cemal. By his time the thermal springs were well-known both internationally, scientific and journalistic literature having been published in French and in Greek, and across Ottoman lands, since the construction here of a still-standing yalı associated with Muhammad Ali of Egypt’s son Tosun Pasha who had sought a cure in Ilıca before his premature death. Ilıca has a fine beach of its own, about 1.5 km long, as well as favorable wind conditions which make it a prized location for windsurfing.

It has now made its name in the world of windsurfing and kitesurfing, with its crystal clear water, consistent and steady wind and well acclaimed hospitality. Alacati is one of the most authentic towns in Turkey with stone houses, narrow streets, boutique hotels and restaurants with tables on the streets. Pergamum – Bergama Pergamon was a small settlement during the Archaic Period. Lysimachos, one of the generals of Alexander the Great and who had become the sovereign of Anatolia after 301 BC. Philetarios who was the commander of Pergamon, and the kingdom founded by Philetarios by using this sum of money following Lysimachos’s death, flourished and became the most eminent center of culture of the Hellenistic period for 150 years. Eumenes I, Attalos I and Eumenes II were enthroned successively after Philetarios. Eumenes II took acropolis of Athens as an example and had the acropolis of Pergamon adorned with works of art which reflected fine taste, and Pergamon became one of the most graceful cities of the world. Attalos III who succeeded Attalos II, handed over his land to the Romans when he died in 133 BC. In the Acropolis, the remains that you see on the left hand side while going in, are the monumental tombs or heroons built for the kings of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period. Shops are situated at their side. When you enter the Acropolis, the remains seen at your left side, are the foundations of Propylon (monumental gates) which were constructed by Eumenes II. When you pass to the square surrounded with three stoas of the Doric order you will notice the ruins of the temple of Athena, built during the
time of Eumenes II in the 3rd century BC. It’s just above the theater. The famous Library of Pergamon which contained 200,000 books, was situated north of the square. Antonius gave all the books of the library to Cleopatra as a wedding gift. The remains near the library, are some houses from the Hellenistic period. If you go up the stairs, you will see the remains of the palaces of Eumenes II and Attalos II. Inside the Acropolis there are houses, military barracks and military warehouses called “Arsenals”. The building that has been restored at present, is the Temple of Trajan. Trajan started it but after his death Emperor Hadrian (117-138) finished the temple in Corinthian order and it was placed upon a terrace with dimensions of 68 m × 58 m (223.10 ft × 190.29 ft). German archaeologists since 1976 to erect this temple which has 6 x 9 columns and a peripteros plan (one row of columns around the temple). It is completely marble. The Theater of Pergamon, one of the steepest theaters in the world, has a capacity of 10,000 people and was constructed in the 3rd century BC. The theater underwent changes during the Roman period under the reign of Caracalla. There is a 246.5 m (808.73 ft) long and approximately 16 m (52.49 ft) wide stoa (portico) in front of the theater. The road in front of the theater leads to the Temple of Dionysos (known in Rome as Baccus, god of wine). The temple was constructed in the 2nd century BC and reconstructed in marble during Caracalla’s period (211-217 AD). Its dimensions are 11.80 m × 20.22 m (38.71 ft × 66.34 ft). The temple, which arouses interest because of the staircase in front with a height of 4.5 m (14.76 ft) and 25 steps, has an exquisite appearance.
The famous Altar of Zeus in Pergamon is on the south of the theater. Eumenes II (197-159 BC) constructed it as a memorial of the victory against the Galatians. This Altar has the shape of a horseshoe and its dimensions are 36.44 m × 34.20 m (119.55 ft × 112.20 ft). It is composed of four parts and the high relieves on it describe the war between the giants and the gods. This is a basilica shaped building constructed under the reign of Hadrian, then, in the 4th century, it was converted into a church dedicated to St. John and became one of the Seven Churches of Christianity. The museum is in Bergama and Asklepion (the ancient medical complex, hospital) is out of the city. It is believed that Asklepion, built in the name of Aesculapius, the god of Health and Medicine, has existed since the 4th century BC. It contains premises such as a small theater with a capacity of 3,500 people, rooms where the patients were cured by the sound of water and music, the temple of Asklepion and the library. Bergama is also renowned for its high quality carpets. There are approximately eighty villages that still weave Bergama carpets. The history of carpet weaving in Bergama dates back to the 11th century when Turkish migration started to the area. Bergama carpets have almost always been woven with wool - an attestation to the pastoral life style of the Yörük clans populating the area at the time. Although the history of carpet weaving in Bergama dates back to the 11th century, most surviving carpets do not age more than 200 years - mainly due to their wool content. The oldest surviving Bergama carpets can be found in mosques in and around Bergama, as well as the archaeological museum in Bergama.
