Cultures & Congresses Types of tourism are increased since it is understood that tourism is not only about 3S - Sea, Sun & Sand. Culture and congress tourism stood out among others. Traces which had left at every stage from the beginning of humanity to the present day have increased the importance of culture tourism. Travels began to those historical places, regions that have traces of ancient civilizations. Therefore people give more importance to unearth historical traces of their homelands which resulted with the acceleration of archaeological excavations. In this regard, Turkey is one of the countries that stand out in recent years. Historical artifacts unearth recent years, at Turkish territory or with its historical name; in Anatolia present thousands of year’s civilizations. That makes Anatolia as one of the first culture tourism destinations. After unearthing history’s first ship wreck in Istanbul excavations few years ago, a 3.000 year-old Sculpture of Hittite King Suppiluliuma discovered in South East Anatolia. In short, the cultural tourism in Turkey is growing every year. The relationship of tourism with many other sectors attracts companies of those sectors to hold their meetings at different destinations. Companies shifted their business meetings to exotic destinations that enable not only gather for business but also to discover those countries. After those meetings, they choose to discover destinations with rich history and culture. Culture and congress tourism become complementary of each other. First Istanbul’s and then Turkey’s popularity of becoming a congress destination is because of that reason.

FDI 2013 AWDC to Take Place in Istanbul
The 101st FDI Annual World Dental Congress is set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 29 August to 1 September 2013. Joint organisers FDI and the Turkish Dental Association (TDA) made the announcement on 12 April at a press conference in Istanbul. FDI and TDA fielded a three-member team—TDA President Prof Taner Yücel, FDI Executive Director Dr Jean-Luc Eiselé and FDI Councillor Prof Nermin Yamalik—to address some 40 members of
the international and national media, officials from TDA and a number of FDI’s corporate partners, Prof. Yücel stressed the importance of the 2013 Annual World Dental Congress in Turkey as a means of furthering the cause of oral health throughout the country. He emphasised that it was the duty of TDA, with input from its partners in business, academia and government, to ensure the event’s success. FDI Executive Director Jean-Luc Eiselé thanked TDA for its continued support, notably in its past and current contributions to work of the Council and Standing Committees. He stressed that the four pillars of FDI—governance, advocacy, science and education, and FDI’s corporate partners, whose research and products “are essential to achieving the FDI mission of ‘Leading the world to optimal oral health’”—will be very much in evidence during the 2013 Annual World Dental Congress. ICVB General Manager Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu said, “ICVB was supporting the event to come to Istanbul. I am very happy that Istanbul is elected as the venue of the FDI Annual World Dental Congress”. FDI is convinced that Istanbul’s traditional role as an economic and cultural hub for Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa—meeting where the continents meet—will make it the ideal AWDC venue, conducive to enhanced networking opportunities.

Istanbul Solidifies its Ranking as a Top Ten International Congress Destination Thanks to expanded facilities and widespread recognition of Istanbul as one of the world’s trendiest and most exciting cities, the city has solidified its place in the Top Ten of the ICCA Rankings and will continue hosting ever more major congresses, such as the upcoming World Dental Federation (FDI), World Federation of Energy Regulators (WFER) and World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). Istanbul first broke into the, world’s Top 10 Congress Destinations in 2010, hosting 109 congresses according to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). This year, according to ICCA’s most recent data, Istanbul has solidified its place in the Top Ten by hosting 113 congresses, a four congress increase over 2010, in 2011, making the city the 9th most popular congress destination worldwide. Reinforcing its status as a venue of choice for the most prestigious international events, Istanbul has recently attracted multiple major congresses. Two of the congress Istanbul has hosted this year were 15th International Inner Wheel Convention IIW, with 3,500 delegates, and Association of Women’s Rights in Development AWID, with 1,800 delegates. Istanbul will be hosting several more major congresses later this year, such as 28th Annual Meeting of European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology ESHRE, with 7,000 delegates expected; 30th World Congress on Endourology and Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy WCE, with 3,000 delegates expected; 4th Congress of the European Academy of Paediatric Societies EAPS, with 2,500 delegates expected.Among some of the future prestigious congress that Istanbul has recently won are World
Dental Congress FDI, which will be held in 2013 with 15,000 delegates expected, World Federation of Energy Regulators WFER, which will be held in 2015 with 1,000 delegates expected and WFNS World Congress of Neurosurgery 2017, expected to have 10,000 delegates. With seven purpose-built convention centers and three exhibition centers large enough to accommodate even the biggest international fairs, Istanbul can easily accommodate large international congresses such as WDF and WFNS. With over 72.000 total guestrooms and 85 five-star and deluxe hotels, Istanbul offers meeting planners a variety of options, including top international and domestic hotel brands, at a variety of price points. Moreover, Istanbul offers three separate but integratable meeting and exhibition clusters in the Airport District, the Conference Valley and the Golden Horn, augmented by new centers being constructed on both continents, and existing centers being updated and expanded. Combined with unique incentives afforded by Istanbul’s historic venues, palaces, cisterns and more, Istanbul presents meeting planners with a variety of remarkable options to create a truly outstanding event. Another factor in Istanbul’s success as a congress destination is easy accessibility from anywhere in the world. Turkish Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, offers almost 200 direct destination flights between Istanbul and five continents, meaning that two billion people live within six hours’ flying time of Istanbul. With two airports, one on the Asian side of the city and the other on the European side, Istanbul is served by nearly 300 international airlines. The Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau (ICVB) designed the strategy integrating tourism sector participation, destination branding and face-to-face marketing that helped Istanbul climb from 46th in the ICCA rankings just a decade ago, to its current position in the Top Ten. ICVB’s General Manager, Mrs. Elif Balcı Fisunoglu, says, “We are pleased with Istanbul’s 2011 performance, which increased by four congresses over 2010’s to a total of 113. Istanbul is on the short list of virtually every major event, and that naturally shows up in the results. Our mission is to continue communicating to meeting planners that Istanbul offers unrivalled flexibility and the confidence of knowing that all facilities are new and technologically up-to-date. Now that we have solidified Istanbul’s place in the Top Ten, we remain committed to achieving our objective of a Top Five ranking in the next 3 - 5 years.”
Istanbul Wins World Forum on Energy Regulation Conference In recognition of Turkey’s increasing importance as an energy corridor and Istanbul as one of the world’s Top 10 congress destinations, Istanbul will host the World Forum on Energy Regulation WFER VI in 2015. Together, the two organizations brought Turkey’s burgeoning role as a major energy corridor, with several oil pipelines and supply routes crisscrossing the country like a modern-day Silk Road, to the attention of International Confederation of Energy Regulators (ICER). Regulation is an important factor in the proper management of these routes and resources, and EMRA, as the architect of the energy regulation policy in Turkey, was well-positioned to make the case for Istanbul. ICVB helped make EMRA’s bid to hold WFER VI in Istanbul successful by offering its expertise in highlighting the appeal of holding an energy forum in the historically dynamic city. In winning this bid, Istanbul beat two other cities, Mexico City and St. Petersburg, presenting in Quebec for the distinction of hosting this prestigious event. Working closely with its agency, WordSmith Advertising, ICVB prepared a film, presentation, bid book and select gifts as part of a successful bid for WFER VI 2015. ICVB offers this extensive consulting to select clients, examining proposed congressesto ensure it meets certain criteria. Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu, general manager of
ICVB, travelled with Hasan Koktaş, President of EMRA, and Gulefşan Demirbaş, advisor to Mr. Koktaş, to Quebec City, Canada, to present Istanbul and lobby for its selection in front of ICER in May 2012. A Turkish coffee set was presented to each director of ICER’s boardas a token of Turkish hospitality. A deciding factor in the bid’s success was undoubtedly Istanbul’s extensive congress facilities, which make the city an increasingly attractive choice to host the largest and most prestigious congresses. In 2010, Istanbul broke into the Top 10 Congress Destinations, ranking 7th worldwide. According to ICCA’s most recent data, Istanbul entrenched itself in the Top Ten by hosting an increased number of congresses in 2011, Another factor in Istanbul’s success as a congress destination is its easy accessibility from anywhere in the world.Turkish Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, offers almost 200 direct destination flights between Istanbul and five continents, meaning that two billion people live within six hours’ flying time of Istanbul. With two airports, one on the Asian side of the city and the other on the European side, Istanbul is served by nearly 300 international airlines. According to Ms.Fisunoğlu, This victory is another reflection of Istanbul’s having put down roots in the Top 10 most popular congress destinations worldwide. We are very pleased to see that Istanbul is increasingly the venue of choice for the most prestigious international congresses.

New Culture Routes Society Formed in Turkey
T
urkey’s new Culture Routes Society was established in July 2012 in order to sustain Turkey’s existing culture routes, to promote the establishment of new routes, and to set best-practice standards for their development. As defined in the Society’s constitution, a culture route is a sustainable route or combination of routes following a historical, cultural or natural theme. Sustainability is our watchword, and eligible routes are aimed at walkers, cyclists or horse-riders.
Aims of the Society:
The Society sees culture routes as a means of deepening cultural understanding—both within Turkey,
22

where city-dwellers are increasingly distanced from their rural past, and by introducing international visitors to aspects of Turkey’s culture that would normally be hidden from them. We aim to bring benefits to the areas through which the routes pass, by involving local people in their creation and by offering them opportunities to host route-users in their homes and pensions. A major concern is conservation of the culture routes and their environment: change is often fast and unplanned in Turkey, and we will work with the relevant authorities to minimise disruption to trails where development is scheduled.
MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine
The Society is based in a drop-in centre in Antalya, where you can get advice before you set out, and buy maps and guidebooks to the routes. We invite you to become a member of the Culture Routes Society, and have your say in the future of Turkey’s culture routes. Contact us directly through our website www.cultureroutesinturkey.com.

Our Routes:
Our Action Plan:
The culture route movement is still new to Turkey, but is developing fast. The first long-distance trail, launched in 1999, was the Lycian Way, between Fethiye and Antalya in SW Turkey. Thousands enjoy this trail every year and it has inspired enthusiasts to establish other trails. There are now 17 culture routes in Turkey but the number grows every year: their locations are shown on the map. The Culture Routes in Turkey main website tells you about the parts of Turkey where you can hike and how to use the existing routes. These vary - some are mainly coastal or mountainous and some have historical, cultural or natural themes. Our website tells you which routes are suitable for biking or horse-riding and which are waymarked and signposted. All the routes have GPS points that can be downloaded from the website. In addition, most routes now have a guidebook and a route map; You can buy guidebooks online, at the Culture Routes Society centre in Antalya, or through stockists listed on the website. Many Turkish and foreign tour operators run holidays on our routes. If you don’t want to trek entirely independently, you could choose a self-guided walk, where the tour operator makes all bookings and transports your baggage, or you could join a group of walkers. If you want advice on independent trekking, or to organise a walking, biking or horseriding holiday for a group of friends, please contact the Culture Routes Society. All the routes give you a chance to enjoy varied accommodation—a mix of village home stays, small, familyrun pensions and occasional boutique hotels. More luxurious accommodation is available in nearby towns, from where you could do selected daywalks. Older-established routes such as the Lycian Way have plenty of group walks or self-guided options, easy communications, a huge range of accommodation, and are still not over-used.
The immediate aims of the society are aimed at the publicising and protection of the routes. We want to: Work with the Tourism Ministry to publish more material on the routes and represent them at tourism fairs in Europe (most of the existing walkers are Europeans, but we now have visitors from as far as China and Brazil as well as many Australians) Petition the Koruma Kurulu to protect our routes as classified sites with a real and historic value. Many are under threat from HES works, mining and new road-making. Work with local authorities, especially Orköy, to help villagers along the routes earn money from providing services for walkers - small pensions, transport services, restaurants, etc. Work with travel agencies to offer group holidays on the routes. If you agree with our aims and would like to support our new and active society, please look at the website. You can mail from the website for a membership application form. Turkey’s Cruise Sector Growing Fast
T
he Seatrade Turkish Cruise Forum has closed today with delegates leaving Izmir after a 1.5 day conference and networking session, which saw cruise lines, ports and suppliers come together to discuss the growing momentum for cruise tourism in Turkey and purchasing strategies and opportunities for local sourcing. In welcoming delegates to the conference on Wednesday 4th July, Seatrade Chairman Chris Hayman stated “these are exciting times for Turkey which last year welcomed 2.5m passengers to its shores. In addition 50,000 Turkish cruise passengers joined ships, a figure set to rise 30% to 65,000 in 2012, making Turkey one of Europe’s fastest growing source markets”. Ekrem Demirtas President of the Executive Board, Izmir Chamber of Commerce discussed how Turkey is looking to grow its cruise business. “In the first 6 months of 2012, we have seen 300 ships carrying 355,000 passengers to Turkey. Our aim for the port of Izmir, one of the country’s three leading cruise ports is to become one of the top 50 cruise destinations in the world”. The passenger port is up for privatisation which includes the building of new berths and infrastructure which when completed in 2015 will have the capacity to handle 2 million passengers a year. Ertugrul Gunay, Minster of Culture and Tourism, Republic of Turkey stated “Tourism is important as it creates peace. We are seeing Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea emerging as cruise destinations and if we cooperate together the Aegean Sea will become the most popular cruise arena in the world outstripping the Caribbean” During the event, Demirtas announced representatives from Turkey’s cruise community met to establish the Turkish Cruise Platform, to further promote cruise tourism within the country. Turkey is one of the fastest growing economies with an expected growth of 5% in 2012. It is the 15th largest GDP market
24

and the 6th largest economy in Europe. Dario Rustico, Sales and Marketing Director Central Europe, Africa, Middle East and India, Costa Crociere S.p.A spoke about the opportunities to grow both calls and locally sourced passengers. “With 6.6 million Turkish tourists travelling abroad there is huge potential here”, he remarked. “Outbound will automatically feed inbound, as bigger ships are deployed to Turkey”, Rustico said. Costa has seven ships calling Turkey during 2012 picking up passengers in Istanbul and Izmir, making 108 calls carrying 372,000 passengers, a figure set to increase by around 9% during 2013. Whilst speakers praised the country’s port facilities and services levels they also spoke about challenges that need to be overcome including Schengen Visas needed by Turkish passengers to travel to European Ports. However Kerry Anastassiadis, CEO Louis Cruises praised Turkey’s ability to listen and take action, “in certain places bureaucracy is the byword, but here you talk and you see action. Hopefully we will hear some positive news on visa and port cost issues in the near future.” Erkunt Oner CEO, Tura Turizm, reiterated the IMO regulations for which all countries are signatories facilitating cruise passengers staying in a port for less than 72 hours are exempt from a visa. “Whilst Turkey is adhering to this rule the Schengen countries are not”. And he pointed out “if this is waived there is a huge potential out of Turkey and neighbouring countries, such as Russia, Ukraine and Arabic countries.” Other discussions covered the need to understand variety when it comes to shore excursions, Mary Shaw-Delaney, Director Shoreside Programmes, Silversea Cruises identified how guests want culture, adventure, shopping, dining, convenience and security – “all found in abundance here in Turkey.”
MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine
The opportunity for local suppliers to increase their engagement with the cruise sector was also covered. Eduardo Lopez-Puertas, VP Land Operations, Pullmantur said “Turkey offers very good prices and service levels but it is important to invest in logistics.” Cruise line panellists said they are open to business proposals from local suppliers but added it is highly challenging and there is no option to fail or delay deliveries. On the morning 5th July, 30 companies attended a networking brunch with ports and suppliers showcasing their products and services and what they can offer to create a comprehensive supply structure for cruise lines operating in the Eastern Med. Companies included travel agents, ship agents, textile producers, porcelain manufacturers, food and beverage suppliers, ports, tourism offices, ship chandlers and repairers. “I found it invaluable to meet suppliers face-to-face and the time to discuss mutual business opportunities,” said Mike Deegan, Operations Director, All Leisure Holidays Participants were treated to warm Turkish hospitality throughout the event, with a Welcome Reception at the Tarihi Havagazi Fabrikasi (Historical Coal Gas Factory) on the Tuesday evening, and a Gala Dinner at the Rain Club Saime Sultan Yalisi Turan / Bayrakli on the Wednesday evening. The Seatrade Turkish Cruise Forum took place at the Swissotel Grand Efes, Izmir, organised by Seatrade and held in conjunction with Izmir Chamber of Commerce. The event was sponsored by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Cesme Ulusoy Port, The Tourist Guides Chamber of Izmir, ITS-ALDO, Karadeveci, Karavanmar Cruise Services, ARKAS Travel – MSC Cruises, Pinar, Sea Song Tours, Turkish Airlines and Tura Turizm.
Turkey Creates 13 Port Cruise Ship Platform
T
urkey, which wants a larger slice of the global tourism pie, is establishing a 13 port cruise ship platform to attract more cruises to its ports. Tourism Minister Günay expects 600,000 cruise passengers to İzmir in 2012. Kuşadası port, which hosted 500,000 cruise ship passengers last year alongside İzmir port. Turkey has established a “Turkey Cruise Ship Platform” consisting of 13 port cities in an attempt to secure a larger slice of the global tourism pie. The cruise industry is growing, and Turkey needs to grab a larger share of the market, İzmir Chamber of Trade (İZTO) Chair Ekrem Demirtaş said at a recent forum. “In 2003, only ships that had lost their way would come to İzmir, but last year İzmir hosted 504,000 cruise tourists,” said Demirtaş, adding that their goal was for all of Turkey’s port cities to achieve the same level of success. He said this was particularly possible since all of Turkey’s port cities enjoyed great weather. Among the port cities to be part of the platform are Istanbul, İzmir, Mersin, İskenderun, Trabzon, Çeşme, Çanakkale, Marmaris and Kuşadası, among others. The decision was made at a meeting at İZTO attended by port presidents from the various port cities in Turkey, the chambers of commerce and trade, chambers of sea trade, municipalities and representatives from the governor’s offices. He said the new platform, with the representation of members of the Transportation, Maritime and Communication, and Culture and Tourism ministries, would soon take the name of “The Union of Turkish Cruise
Ship Ports,” following a Cabinet decree. Demirtaş also said there was currently no body to oversee that cruise ships docking at Turkish ports received superior service and no marketing or know-how to increase potential. Touching on the construction of a new cruise ship port in İzmir, Demirtaş invited investors to take part in the Sept. 7 tender for the port. With the completion of the port, İzmir will be able to host 2 million cruise passengers, Demirtaş said. Meanwhile, the president of the Greek Ports Association and president of the Piraeus Port, George Anomeritis said July 3 that Turkey and Greece had to engage in close cooperation with each other in the cruise ship industry. Anomeritis, a former Greek minister of agriculture and tourism, visited Demirtaş along with the chief executive officer of the Medcruise Line, Stavros Hatzakos. Piraeus and İzmir happen to be the two biggest ports in the area, Anomeritis said. Cruise tourism cannot thrive with a single port. All ports in the region have to be successful for cruise tourism, Anomeritis said. “We are not merely connected by a sea. Cruise ships unite us as well. Both Piraeus and İzmir market tourism and civilization. As ports in the eastern Mediterranean, we need to closely cooperate,” Anomeritis said. Meanwhile, Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay said yesterday at the Seatrade Turkish Cruise Ship Forum in İzmir that if Turkey were to partner with Greece, the Aegean Sea would become the top tourism destination in the world. “Nine years ago, we only had 3,000 visitors to
MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine
İzmir; last year, there were 500,000 for İzmir and Kuşadası. I couldn’t believe the number for İzmir. This year we anticipate 600,000,” he said. Seatrade President Chris Hayman also said that in 2011 Turkey had hosted over 2.2 million cruise passengers. Hayman added that in 2011 there were 170 cruise ships in the Mediterranean and that 206 were expected this year.
Cruise ships to Turkey sharply rise The number of cruise ships that docked at Turkey’s ports has increased 83 percent, while the number of passengers who came to the country on those ships has climbed 276 percent in last nine years. Cruise ship tourism, which attracts high income people, has grown about 10 percent every year. The number of tourists coming to Turkey by cruise ship has recorded a year-onyear increase of 10.8 percent in 2004, 17.4 percent in 2005, 34.1 percent in 2006, 34.6 percent in 2007 and 17.3 percent in 2008. It recorded a 7.5 percent fall in 2009 due to the global economic crisis. The figure increased by 15 percent in 2010 and finally by 18 percent last year. The number of cruise ships visiting Turkey was 887 carrying a total of 582,000 passengers in 2003. The figures hit 1,623 cruise ships carrying 2.2 million passengers as of the end of 2011. During the first five months of this year a total of 300 cruise ships brought 353,000 tourists to Turkey. Istanbul, the western ports of İzmir, Kuşadası, Bodrum and Marmaris, and the southern port of Antalya are among the favorite destinations of cruise ships out of a total of 23 ports. September’2012

A Break on The Historical Silk Road:
Meet at Venue
Kırkgöz Han
K
Kırkgöz Han caravansary, which had been constructed by II Giyaseddin Keyhusrev Bin Keykubat in Seljuk Empire period and served as one of the last stops preceding Antalya Port on the silk road 800 years ago, is now being restored to tourism and business life by Kültür AŞ. After 4-year-long restoration works applied, Kırkgöz Han, one of the largest caravansaries in Turkey, is preparing to bring a breath of fresh air to tourism and business life in Antalya. Located on Antalya-Burdur highway only 18 km from the city center, Kırkgöz Han takes part in caravansary chain situated on one of the primary caravan routes of Seljuk Empire period. Kırkgöz Han had been constructed in 1247 under the rule of II Giyaseddin Keyhusrev as one of the six caravansaries that had been constructed by command of Sultans in Anatolia. Right along with its general characteristics that most caravansaries have, it has a unique set of architectural properties with its covering, brushings and well in its courtyard. Kırkgöz Han is mentioned as “ribat” in inscriptions. Ribat is a secure and fortified construction being built on borders for military purposes in the very first Islamic empires period. Having been built on significant points of the border in terms of battle, those constructions contained accommodations, dining halls, arsenals, warehouses, small mosques, public baths and barns. Kırkgöz Han Caravansary has been brought back to life by Kültür AŞ after a long restoration period of 4 years with a view to re-functionalizing Kırkgöz Han Caravansary so that it maintains historical continuity as evidence in socio-cultural terms, and that re-use of it constitutes a favorable economic input. Even though those multifunctional monumental structures such as caravansary, khan and alms house can reach today and survive, they cannot maintain their original purpose due to changes in socioeconomic and cultural life. world undergo a change, and many monumental structures cannot be utilized due to this change. In fact, most of these monumental structures can be re-functionalized and survived as is the case with Kırkgöz Han accomplishment and their contribution to domestic economy can be made sure in this way. Kırkgöz Han is looking forward to tourism and event sector with its total area of 11000 square meters being composed of 2500 square meter-indoor area and 1500 square meter outdoor area to host all kinds of events, concerts, wedding
ceremonies, and special meetings. In addition to standing for a special venue for your events, the caravansary will also serve as a restaurant where menus of ottoman cuisine and world cuisine are served and will keep its historical mission going as a centre where traditional handicrafts such as carpet weaving, jewelry processing, ceramic and the art of tile-making are kept alive. In the first year of its putting into service, in Antalya where only 12 million foreign tourists and about 2 million

All details of our caravansary will be decorated in keeping with Seljuk and Ottoman period with the instructions of science board to be formed by Kırkgöz Han AŞ and will be providing its guests with the opportunity to take a journey to 800-year history. ext stop on my recent visit to Istanbul, was a visit to a property I had read about and promised myself to visit: Sumahan on the Water located on the Asian side. Nestled on the shores of the Bosphorus, between the two bridges, in the village of Çengelköy, Sumahan was originally a spirits distillery built in 1875, and owned by Nedret Butler’s family. Nedret & Mark Butler, both architects, spent over 10 years on the reclamation of the property and the loving restoration of it into a beautiful welcoming boutique hotel. It was a family affair. The couple’s two daughters collaborated on the interior design and graphic design. Remnants of the original architecture remain in the form of structural steel beams and rough hewn walls. They managed to carve out 24 rooms including 13 suites, most with fireplaces (thoughtfully cleaned out and reset each day), all with a sea view. My room (#105 - though all the rooms have names which gives them a unique character to match their individual decor - mine was Baltilimani) was a loft suite room with a sitting room with french doors opening directly to a lawn and low wall separating me from the water. A pair of adirondack chairs right outside

invited one to sit and stare at the traffic on the busy waterway and the light house nearby. At night the Bosphorus splashed almost up to my door when one of the large tankers made its way towards the Black Sea. The lower level had a desk and sitting area with a half bath and the fireplace. A tray of fresh fruit and a small fridge (no ridiculously priced mini bar) of bottled water were refreshed each day. Up stairs was a king bed with a view of the water and a full bath with tub and separate shower. Free wi-fi to catch up on work and, with a bit of difficulty getting the channel on the cable TV, I joined many Turks in watching the popular Hürem Sultan soap opera. There are simple modern furnishings, beautiful textiles, kilims on the wood floors, dramatic lighting and whimsical (and very useful) touches like Turkish lessons on the bottles of lotions and potions, so one could brush up on expressions, numbers or pronunciation while showering or brushing your teeth. It would be nit picking to say there are two flaws: The bedside lamps can only be shut off from a wall switch and the window coverings should also be electrically operated from the bedside.

That said, I did not want to leave my room. It was the perfect respite from a hectic Istanbul schedule. Although, a snazzy, sharply restored1930’s launch stands at the ready to take you across to all the hustle and bustle of the European side should you want more action. The public spaces are comprised of a small bar and the Waterfront Cafe, which has a beautiful outdoor patio right at the edge of the water, a spa on the lower level, as well as meeting rooms where it might just be a little bit difficult to concentrate on the work at hand. A library filled to overflowing with a collection of books on Turkey in all subjects is right off the lobby (the only rival of which might be the late Celik Gulersoy’s at the Ayasofiya Pansiyonlari - also worth exploring if you have the chance) entreats one to linger and learn about the history that imbues the entire hotel. The spa was most luxurious if compact. There was a private hamam, treatment rooms and a lounge area. I indulged in a full 3 hour experience. My therapist, Ms. Asuman, skillfully scrubbed, me swabbed me in mud, gave me a bubble bath massage, and after a short rest on a leather chaise with some

apricots, Ada Çayi (mountain sage tea - a cleansing & healthful tea), and the latest Cornucopia Magazine, brought me to a treatment room for an aromatic oil massage. This had to be the highlight of my trip! Mr. Aydin is available for male clients. There are plans afoot to open a new restaurant this fall where the
popular waterfront Kordon Restaurant was located. Sumahan is well suited to the sophisticated traveler who wishes to soak in an authentic Istanbul experience. A bit of leisure to explore the Asian side would be helpful, but I would take any amount of time available to me to repeat my experience there.

3,000 year-old Sculpture of Hittite King Suppiluliuma Discovered in Turkey
A
colossal two-tonne 3,000 year-old sculpture of Hittite King Suppiluliuma is one of the latest cultural treasures to be unearthed by an international team in Tell Tayinat, an ancient site in Hatay, southeastern Turkey. Alongside the statue archaeologists found another carving, a semicircular column base bearing the images of a sphinx and a winged bull. Tayinat, a large low-lying mound, is located 35 kilometres east of Antakya (ancient Antioch). Announcing the finds, which form part of a monumental gate complex from the upper citadel of Kunulua, capital of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina (ca. 1000-738 BC), Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Gunay, said that the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism aims for these key pieces, which shed light on life in ancient Anatolia, to be exhibited at the Hatay Archaeological Museum within a year following careful restoration by a professional team. Commenting on
the newly discovered Tayinat sculptures, Timothy Harrison, professor of near eastern archaeology at the University of Toronto and director of the Tayinat Archaeological Project, which has been ongoing since 2004, said that there was a ‘very wellpreserved Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription on the back’ identifying him as Hittite King Suppiluliuma. He went on to say ‘[the pieces] provide a vivid glimpse into the innovative character and sophistication of the Iron Age cultures that emerged in the eastern Mediterranean following the collapse of the great imperial powers of the Bronze Age at the end of the second millennium BC.’ The sculpture of King Suppiluliuma, a regal figure who ruled over the Neo-Hittite kingdom of Patina in the 9th century B.C., is preserved from the waist up and measures almost 1.5 meters tall, suggesting a total body length of 3.5 to four metres.
Who is Suppiluliuma Suppiluliuma was king of the Hittites between 1344–1322 BC. He achieved fame as a great warrior and statesman, successfully challenging the thendominant Egyptian empire for control of the lands between the Mediterranean and the Euphrates. Suppiluliuma began his career as the chief advisor and general to Tudhaliya II, then based at Samuha. In this capacity, he defeated the Hittites’ enemies among the Azzi-Hayasa and the Kaskas. Both enemies then united around charismatic leaders to counter him; of these Karanni founded a semblance of a royal court in Hayasa, and Piyapili failed to do likewise for the Kaska. Suppiluliuma and Tudhaliya defeated these threats in turn, to the extent that the Hittite court could settle in Hattusa again. When Tudhaliya II died, Tudhaliya III succeeded to the throne. Soon after his accession, however, he was overthrown and succeeded by Suppiluliuma who was the younger brother of Tudhaliya III. Some of the Hittite priests later reported this to Suppiluliumas’s son, successor, and biographer Mursili II, holding it out as an outstanding crime of the whole dynasty. Suppiluliuma married a sister to the Hayasan king Hukkana, and his daughter Muwatti to Maskhuiluwa of the Arzawan state Mira. He also married a Babylonian princess and retook Arzawan territory as far as Hapalla. His most permanent victory was against the Mitanni kingdom, which he reduced to a client state
under his son-in-law Shattiwazza. He was also a master builder of large stone structures decorated with stone reliefs. It was during his reign that concepts of the sacred nature of royal leaders developed. The treaty he signed with the Mitannian king Matiwaza was sworn in the name of Vedic deities (Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Nasatya), indicating that these were both Aryan cultures which worshipped the same gods. Suppiluliuma then took advantage of the tumultuous reign of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, and seized control of Egyptian territory in Syria, inciting many Egyptian vassals to revolt. His success encouraged the widow (who is called Dakhamunzu in the annals) of the Egyptian king Nibhururiya (usually identified with Tutankhamun) to write to him, asking him to send one of his sons to be her
MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine
husband and rule Egypt, since she had no heir and was on the verge of being forced to marry “a servant”, usually thought to be the Egyptian general Horemheb or her late husband’s vizier Ay. Suppliluliuma dispatched an ambassador to Egypt to investigate; he reported that the situation was accurately described, and the king decided to take advantage of this windfall; unfortunately, Prince Zannanza died on the way, and the marriage alliance never was consummated. Angry letters were exchanged between Suppiluliuma and the Pharaoh Ay, who had assumed the Egyptian throne, over the circumstances of Zannanza’s death. Suppililiuma was furious at this turn of events and unleashed his armies against Egypt’s vassal states in Canaan and Northern Syria, capturing much territory. Unfortunately, many of the Egyptian prisoners carried a plague which would eventually ravage the Hittite heartland and lead to the deaths of both Suppiluliuma I and his successor, Arnuwanda II. The Deeds of Suppiluliuma, compiled after his death by his son Mursili, is an important primary source for the king’s reign. One of Suppiluliuma’s letters, addressed to Akhenaten, was preserved in the Amarna letters (EA 41) archive at Akhetaten. It expresses his hope that the good relations which existed between Egypt and Hatti under Akhenaten’s father (Amenhotep III) would continue into Akhenaten’s new reign. September’2012

It is fitting that Africa now has a platform with ILTM to showcase its wonders and diversity. ILTM has been the pioneer of luxury travel forums, matching buyers and suppliers in a highly professional and successful environment” says Frances Geoghegan, Managing Director of Africa Travel UK. “ILTM coming to Cape Town will be of great benefit to the whole of the African travel industry.” Added Geoghegan.

IMEX America Bigger October 2012 Show A strong debut from IMEX America last year has resulted in significant increases from exhibitors and buyers for the award-winning trade show this coming 9 – 11 October at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas. Of contracts so far received, 20% of those who exhibited at the first show are returning with even bigger booths. Of these, 50% of exhibitors have more than doubled the space they will be taking at the show. In addition, and another sign that the show has captured both the imagination and the business appetite of the international meetings, incentive travel and events market, almost 40 new booths are set to join the line-up so far at IMEX America, with more expected in the next two months. Of the 40 to-date many are new US suppliers and destinations, while the space increases have been seen from right across the world. Hotel groups have also responded strongly meaning that the hotel section of the trade show floor will also be noticeably bigger and more varied this fall. Among the hotel and resort groups doubling their booth sizes will be Auberge Resorts, Destination Hotels & Resorts, Iberostar, Loews, Mandarin Oriental, Peabody, Rosen and Wynn Las Vegas. Other hotel groups including Fairmont Raffles Swissotel, Four Seasons, Hyatt, IHG, Leading Hotels of the World, Melia, Morgans, NH Hoteles, Preferred, Sofitel, Starwood and Wyndham have also increased their booth space. New hotel exhibitors will include Trump Hotels, KSL Resorts and Peninsula. New US destinations represented on the show floor will be Charlotte, Indianapolis, Jackson Hole,
Long Beach, Myrtle Beach, Nashville, Seattle, Sedona, the US Virgin Islands and Yosemite Gold Country. IMEX America will also feature a dedicated ‘California’ section which will showcase San Diego, San Francisco and new exhibitors Long Beach, Santa Monica and Beverley Hills. Meanwhile, global destinations new to the show include Abu Dhabi, El Salvador, Honduras, Peru and Madrid. The technology section of the show is also set to expand with new exhibitors including etouches, Showcare Event Management and SignUp4. In announcing today’s figures, IMEX Group Chairman, Ray Bloom, declared that the show’s hallmark hosted buyer program will also be larger this year with well over 2,000 buyers expected. Much of this growth has been achieved through IMEX America partners and intermediaries who want to bring larger hosted buyer groups following positive feedback from their clients after last year’s event. Dozens of new hosted buyer groups have now been confirmed. Among others they currently include buyers invited by: Buyers Networking Club, Carnival Corporation, Loews Hotels, the MGM Group, the Religious Conventions Management Association, Sofitel Luxury Hotels, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Brazil, US Motivation and Yosemite Gold Country. Bloom commented: “We were delighted with the positive response we received after last year’s debut IMEX America; it was clear the show produced the business results both exhibitors and buyers were looking for. It is gratifying to see that feedback now being converted into increased participation on both sides, which bodes well for an even stronger IMEX America this October... and we’ve still got three months to go.”
CIBTM Offers Dynamic Opportunities for Attendees CIBTM 2012 will bring together over 400 exhibitors from 29 countries, over 300 international and regional Hosted Buyers, over 20 key industry figures who will deliver thought provoking education content and a host of networking opportunities which will take place as part of China Meetings Week 2012. Exhibitors signed up to take part in the biggest CIBTM to date include; Silversea Cruises, Rotana Hotels, London and Partners, Marriot International, Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, Barcelona Convention Bureau, China Star, Air China Limited, Japan National Tourism Organisation, Tourism Australia and Pacific World. Jeffrey Xu, Reed Travel Exhibitions, Exhibition Manager CIBTM comments, “CIBTM provides a dedicated three-day business platform focused on the rapidly expanding
and developing Chinese market. The growth of the show is a testament to the considerable interest in the sector, both inbound and outbound, as local Chinese corporations and the world’s leading industry players focus on this part of the world and its significant growth prospects. I would encourage anyone involved in the planning and staging of meetings, incentives, events and business travel throughout the region to register and secure their Hosted Buyer or visitor place.” The rise of technology and its application in the MICE sector will be a hot topic at this year’s show. Industry professionals including Jens Thraenhart, Co-Founder & President, DragonTrail and Chair, PATA China Chapter/PATA Technology Committee and Ewan MacLeod, Founder of Mobile Industry Review will be presenting sessions dedicated to informing meetings industry professionals about an industry which is developing at an exponential rate.

nkara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great),
and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity
as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.

zmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns.
