Live it up! That is what life is about, or in an ideal world should be about. Tourism and travel are ways to implement the ‘Live it up’ principle. At the beginning , tourism was all about sampling a foreign culture; then it became enjoying sun, sand and sea, but now tourism is changing again. Good quality festivals have made the world of Turkish culture into a new and fashionable travel destination. Bringing romance, taste, exoticism and elegance to the travelling public, they also enhance the residents’ experience of their city. Nejat Eczacibasi with his broad cultural vision and insight established the Istanbul Festival for Culture and Arts 38th years ago. Nejat Eczacibasi was the Founder. The team and the leaders were so enthusiastic, professional and forward that they have carried this Festival to international standards. Aydin Gun being a cultural guru marked his presence as the general manager of the family/team of the festival by highlighting the successful leaders to be within this festival/ family. Aydin Gun was the Developer. Gorgun Taner, the general manager of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts is the best example for this achievement. Sakir Eczacibasi took the flag after his brother Nejat and with his remarkable energy, the Foundation grew in deeds and staff. Sakir Eczacibasi put a lot of energy, soul and passion into the project of moving to the new premises. Deniz Palas, the new premises of the Foundation, turned into a “fairy touch” cultural center from an old, sad building. Sakir Eczacibasi being a photographer himself knew the importance of the culture and romance. Sakir Eczacibasi was the Leader. Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has captured the newest trend of cultural tourism, by making festivals which showcase Istanbul’s culture, music and art, both traditional and modern. By coupling their brand to that of Istanbul, the culture and romance of centuries is added to the name of Eczacibasi. Bulent Eczacibasi, will be the Achiever, for further international successful events that will place the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts among the ‘must’ in the Festival world. Istanbul is on Stage now,as the 2010 Cultural Capital of Europe and with the start of the 17th Theatre Festival followed by the 38th Music Festival, followed by the 17th Cazz Festival. Join and and “live it up”.

The 1,510-meter gravity anchored suspension bridge is located between Ortakoy on the European side and Beylerbeyi on the Asian side and it was built in 1973. World’s Oldest Temple Found in Turkey

A team of archaeologists has claimed that a temple being excavated in south eastern Turkey is 12,000 years old and is likely the oldest temple ever uncovered in the world. According to a report by United Press International (UPI), the site was first identified in 1986 when a farmer tilling his field in Sanliurfa found a statuette in the soil. Since then, archaeologists have uncovered the foundation of the temple built in the Neolithic Age along with carvings of pigs, foxes, snakes, fawns and headless humans. Officials with the Harran University Archaeology Department have yet to identify the culture that built the temple or their belief system. German teams were the first to excavate beginning in 1995, but the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry placed the site on its first-degree protection list in 2005, taking control of the research. Prior to this discovery, the world’s oldest known temple was in Malta, dating from 5,000 B.C. n

The Founder

he success of the International Foundation for Culture and Arts was the dedicated work, insight and spirit of these three culture and art chevaliers. Unfortunately, we have lost them to eternity but their contribution to the Culture and Arts in Turkey is growing in time and space. They have become our symbol for fine arts. The international boundaries they have set as standards for Turkeys achievement in this field has surpassed its limits and is ever growing with widening new horizons. Bulent Eczacibasi will be carrying this honorable flag of culture as of now after his father and uncle. The new premises of the Foundation at Deniz Palas sets a good example to its growth in body and soul.

Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1973 by seventeen businessmen and art enthusiasts who gathered under the leadership of Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı, with the aim of organising an international arts festival in İstanbul. The Foundation’s initial goal was to offer the finest examples of art from around the world, while at the same time promoting the national, cultural and artistic assets of Turkey, by using arts to create an international platform of communication. The first International İstanbul Festival, organised in 1973 on the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic, covered a period of one and a half months and focused mainly on classical music. Soon after, it included other artistic fields in its programme such as film screenings, theatre productions, jazz and ballet performances, and art exhibitions held in historic venues. As public interest grew, groups of events organised in different artistic disciplines gradually evolved into distinct festivals. Presented as a separate section under the name “International İstanbul Filmdays” in 1983, the film week transformed into the International İstanbul Film Festival in 1989; 1987 marked the beginning of the International İstanbul Biennial, and in 1989 the International İstanbul Theatre Festival was initiated. In 1993, after Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı passed away, Şakir Eczacıbaşı became the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Since then, the Foundation took serious steps on the path of institutionalising and strengthened its position in Turkey’s cultural and artistic life. The International İstanbul Jazz Festival was initiated in 1994, the same year that the International İstanbul Festival changed its name to the International İstanbul Music Festival. Thus, İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts became an institution that organises five international festivals. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts initiated a social responsibility project and founded the İstanbul Friends of Culture and Arts Tulip membership programme with the intention of protecting cultural heritage and fostering the development of arts. Continuing today under the name of Tulip membership, the programme gathers art enthusiasts under one roof, and provides its members a variety of privileges during İKSV-organised events including the İstanbul Festivals. The same year, İKSV made a decision to organise innovative,

smaller events in addition to the İstanbul Festivals. Beginning with Filmekimi (a week of film screenings in October) in 2002, The Foundation continued to add brand new events to its portfolio such as Phonem by Miller (alternative rock and electronic music performances in November) and Minifest (3 days of children’s activities in the summer) in 2003. In 2006, İKSV assumed the organisation of the bi-annual Leyla Gencer Voice Competition, from its 4th edition onward. The Foundation has been committed to bringing together different cultures and contributing to the creation of a platform for multicultural dialogue. In this respect, İKSV organises a series of international festivals in major European cities. This journey began in 2004 with “Şimdi Now” in Berlin and continued with “Şimdi Stuttgart” in 2005, “Turkey Now” in Amsterdam and Rotterdam in 2007 and 2008, and Russia in 2008. Next stop is scheduled for Vienna, Austria in 2009. The “Cultural Season of Turkey in France” activities to be held between 1 July 2009 and 31 March 2010 are also organised by İKSV, in collaboration with Culturesfrance. İKSV has been organising the Pavilion of Turkey at the Venice Biennale since 2007. Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2007, İKSV realised the landmark İstanbul Festivals and other innovative events with a renewed enthusiasm. On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the birth of Mawlana Jalal-aldin Rumi, İKSV welcomed Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the troupe of originally creative choreographer Maurice Béjart, for a special performance entitled “Best of Béjart & Rumi” in İstanbul. In 2008 and 2009, İKSV continued to bring world famous artists and groups such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, R.E.M., Santana and Leonard Cohen, together with the İstanbulites. 2009 marked a turning point in İKSV’s history as the headquarters moved from its home on the historic İstiklal Street in Beyoğlu to another historical building, Deniz Palas, in Şişhane. Together with its new building, İKSV realised a long time dream, and launched its own performance venue, Salon, in which it will not only organise, but also host cultural and artistic events. In addition to such happy developments, the beginning of year 2010 also brought sorrow, as Şakir Eczacıbaşı, who had been the Chairman of the Board of Directors for 16 years passed away. In February 2010, Bülent Eczacıbaşı was elected as the Chair of the Board of Directors. İKSV, a pioneer in the field of culture and arts, will continue and strengthen its creative, constructive and innovative role with İstanbul Festivals and other events.

The Restoration Protocol of The Historic Hasköy Mayor Synagogue Has Been Signed!

The protocol for the restoration of Hasköy Mayor Synagogue has been signed with the Hasköy Mallem Synagogue Foundation. This protocol has great importance for Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture in terms of the City’s cultural transformation. The Hasköy Mayor Synagogue, representing the multicultural texture of Haliç area in the transformation period, will have a very dynamic role in the cultural project in which “the memory of the City” opens up one more time to be read and the Istanbul identity is cherished with its all historic components. In the beginning of the 17th century, the right for synagogue building was granted to the Istanbul Jews with an imperial edict. And these synagogues carry the names of cities from which the Jewish people had immigrated to Istanbul, as is Mayor Synagogue. (The name “Mayor” indicates that the synagogue was build by the Jews immigrated from Majorca). The synagogues of the Turkish Jews are located mainly Hasköy and Balat districts. It is known that in the Hasköy district there were 29 synagogues in 1835 and by the 1935, this number had been decreased to 7. But today in this area only the Mayor synagogue remains. This religious building, which is not used for worshiping anymore, has been effected from the drastic transformation of the Haliç and its environs into industrial and semi-industrial area. Nowadays, the auxiliary buildings of the synagogue are used as atelier. For the restoration of Mayor Synagogue, which is historical and cultural heritage, the relievo and restitution projects is being prepared. The restoration and engineering projects and the constructing applications according to these projects are the main purposes inasmuch as the building is renewed as art and cultural center. Thereby, the Mayor Synagogue can integrate with public and enrich the City’s cultural life with its new function.

Racing

in Thailand

By Sevinc KUYAS

ailing and racing around Andaman sea in Thailand is one of the most exciting times in my life. Experience the most spectacular scenery and lively parties around the most scenic provinces as Phuket,Phang Nga and Krabi, is only possible by participating in Phang Nga Bay Regatta, every year around the beginning of February, this year it is the 13th. The Regatta appeals to the serious and not-so-serious racing sailors from around the world and it lasts oficially 4 days of racing and 5 days of partying. The anchorage and party venues take place at the favoured locations. The boats sailing and racing their way zig zag through the many limestone outcrops and rocky islands, some with endemic plantations on them display a picturesque wiew. Our racing boat Farr 43 called Switchblade with our Team of 11 racers from 8 different countries made 2 first prize wins and two second prize wins and in the end made the overall first prize win. This really is a great succes and great surprise for all. Some days because of lack of strong winds we had shortened courses. Spinnakers and coloured sails add the spectacular scenery a

32

different dimension. Around mid day, winds tend to slow down and almost end. Each day after the races and debarquement we used to swim and enjoy endless crystal clear sandy shores. We had to get up before dawn around 5 am every day when ebb time was the most extreme. This dramatic change in water level was very shocking for us because we have nothing of that sort in our country. This also made our transfer to the boat very difficult. Boats used for transfer are called “ long tail” and they really have long tails, having the engine at the end the tail raises up to avoid the engine from touching the ground. The very nice thing in Thailand is their mouth- watering dishes and their being very cheap, and I also cannot finish my stories about Thailand without mentioning their lively world famous night life. How enjoyable and colourfull they were. I recommend everybody I know to have a sailing trip with intervals around the islands and to have some inshore activities.

Sailing and Racing in Turkey Having years of experince in racing for fun and party I also very strongly recommend to have a race week around Göcek and Marmaris in late Autumn and in May at Göcek in South

west coast of Turkey. The difference is you have the possibility of having history related trips and mild temperature and breeze in the evenings. You swim around ship wrecks (natural cradle to fish coves ) in crystal clear water and sunken cities and and have drinks among ancient tombs staring the forest . Marmaris Race Week is with 20 years back history welcomes 130 boats and 800 sailors participating every year from all over the world. So is GĂścek Race Week with 45 boats and approximately 350 sailors from all over the world in spring and summer when the climate is in best condition. You can combine your blue voyage by ancient city tour trips like Kaunos, Afrodisias, Ephesus and many others will stay a life-long romantic experience in your memory. Spending a week with challenge, fun, parties and history with a shared spirit like sailing is the most breath-taking experience.

Turkey at the GIBTM Abu Dhabi 2010 T u r k e y appeared with a strong presence at the Gulf Incentive Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM2010), a business travel exhibition for the meeting, conference and incentives industry which was held from 29 - 31 March 2010 at the National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in Abu Dhabi. For the first time participating in this event and between another 40 countries and over 250 exhibitors from the region and all over the world, Turkey had a lot of opportunities to provide to its visitors. By virtue of possessing a significant historical and cultural heritage, Turkey has positioned itself as a door of amazing possibilities. Turkey where Europe and Asia meet has become an ideal destination for Congresses and Incentive Travel for many regional and multinational companies with a wide range of accommodation and congress facilities. It is never a problem to find meeting rooms equipped with the latest technology and everything necessary to meet perfectly the needs of different sorts and sizes of productive gatherings. All meetings can be comfortably and pleasurably arranged in Turkey’s delightful resorts. In these resorts there can be found four- and five-star hotels, holiday villages, boutique hotels and fully-equipped congress centers that all boast the highest standards plus friendly professional service and traditional Turkish hospitality. Wonderful hotels and restaurants, thoughtfully restored, offer the opportunity to try local dishes including the unique richness and authentic tastes of Turkish-Ottoman cuisine plus Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. To all of this should be added a wonderful climate, nonstop entertainment and interesting excursions. Because of its proximity to Europe and the convenience of flying with Turkish Airlines as well as growing number of regional airlines from the GCC, amongst others, to large cities in the United States, Middle east and asia, Turkey

has become the country of choice for meetings, congresses, conferences, exhibitions and fairs. The most important destinations in terms of Congress Travel are: Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum, Cappadocia, Istanbul, Izmir, Konya, and Marmaris. Amongst the internationally important events that took place in Turkey in recent years were: the Geo-Thermal Congress, the Universiade, a NATO Summit, Formula One race and the Champions League Final, the ITU Telecommunications Conference, the 17th World Accounts Congress, the UPAV Belgian Travel Agents Union Committee, the European Oncology Union Congress and the European Guides Union Committee Meeting. Situated on the doorstep of the world Turkey offers large organizations a comprehensive professionalism plus dynamic and exciting new opportunities. Turkey is a major attraction for international inbound tourism. Projections made on the Turkish tourism sector point out the need for huge new investments, particularly in infrastructure and accommodation. According to the Tourism Investors Association (TYD) $10 billion investments for hotels, marinas, golf courses and shopping centers only, disregarding infrastructure work, will be required in the next five years. Currently tourism in Turkey is largely concentrated in the seaside resorts along its Aegean and Mediterranean coasts offering visitors the 3S’s: the sun, the sea and the sand. Also Istanbul stands out as the most popular city for tourists coming to Turkey. Seventy five percent of available facilities are in the coastal tourist centers and in Istanbul. Turkey is seeking to develop a broader tourism industry to ensure healthy and sustainable development. In line with world tourism trends, it is adopting a new strategy to promote tourism offerings based on the EducationEntertainment-Environment concept instead of the Sun-Sea-Sand triangle. It plans to utilize its untapped tourism potential by diversifying into new areas such as golf, yachting, thermal, winter, M.I.C.E (meetings+incentives+conve ntions+exhibitions), and faith tourism. This will also help the tourism sector contribute to the economy in additional seasons.

Iceland Volcano Ash Cloud Stifles International Meetings Activity

A survey of ICCA member companies has revealed the massive global impact of the recent volcanic ash-induced European no-fly zone. The no-fly zone has hit the international association sector as well as corporate meetings, triggering cancellations, postponements and delegate reductions in this previously resilient sector, something the current economic crisis has failed to achieve. Whilst European events were most badly affected (over 70% reporting negative impacts), conferences held in locations as far distant as the West Coast of North America and the Malaysian state of Sarawak also suffered, with reduced delegate attendances, missing keynote speakers, and frustrated organisers. But the survey also revealed the many creative ways in which ICCA members worked with clients to mitigate the damage caused by this crisis: numerous events have been rebooked at no extra charge; cancellation and attrition clauses have been relaxed; massive efforts have been made to assist and communicate with delegates. Many smaller events have been replaced by video conferencing, some larger events converted into “hybrid meetings” by combining a live audience with webcasting for those who couldn’t make it through the ash. ICCA CEO Martin Sirk said: “This unprecedented shut-down challenged our industry as never before, and has been a massive wake-up call for us to think about how we will deal with the inevitable future crises. What it also demonstrated is the vital importance of strong long-term working relationships between suppliers and meeting planners - this is not a time for either party to insist on contractual small-print, and if there has been one heart-warming aspect from our survey it was to hear so many stories of collaboration and flexibility.” ICCA will be organising a morning seminar on the Iceland volcano and its implications at IMEX on Tuesday 25 May n

Meet at Music

David Helfgott and

Rachmaninoff By Alexandra Ivanoff stanbul is full of exciting events always but recently with the Istanbul 2010 European Cultural Capital year the excitement and pace has grown to the limit of a “race” to follow the music, art and events that are happening. We have devoted the music part of this issue to Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto no. 3 played by two magnificent performers. The Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra accompanied the two great performers successfully. Here is what Alexandra has to say about these two performers. (Sevil Oren)

42

May’2010

Since the İstanbul State Symphony Orchestra (İDSO) was playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with two different pianists, Leonel Morales and David Helfgott, within five days of each other, I decided I would attend both concerts, compare them and select which pianist I liked better. I have to admit I already had in mind a slight favoritism toward one of them, but I strove to be as open-minded as possible. With a concerto of that magnitude (one of the most challenging in the repertoire) and renown, it could turn into an amusing little competition. One of these two pianists would just have to drop a few notes or worse: bore me, and I’d have an instant winner -- the other one. Well, the results surprised me.

MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine

First contender: Leonel Morales On April 2, Leonel Morales made his second appearance in İstanbul; this time, playing this work with İDSO at the Caddebostan Cultural Center (CKM). Morales is a Cuban-born pianist who now lives in Spain, where he is the founder and artistic director of several piano festivals and competitions. He has recorded, in addition to some of the standard piano repertoire, several albums of Spanish composers’ works. His tall and handsome appearance and his dignified manner took me back to another era: a suave, old-fashioned formality reminiscent of films of the 1940s. As his large hands did a filmic sweep over the keyboard, his cool demeanor never broke a sweat, remaining always elegant. The “Rach 3,” as it is known, is a more diffuse work than Concerto No. 2, which is chock full of romantic and memorable melodies. No. 3 begins with a quiet three-note theme that gets developed over and over, with many permutations. Morales began it imperceptibly, almost out of nowhere, then leaned into the musical line with grace, letting the sonorities bloom in their own time, never pushing them into each other. Conductor Emin Güven Yaşlıçam’s swift and accurate cueing of the orchestra and Morales’ precision and power built an enormously exciting climax in the middle of the first movement. The second movement’s breathtakingly beautiful muted violins’ purring of the trademark Rachmaninoff melodic and rhythmic styling was just like a film score; Yaşlıçam couldn’t quite get the horns to deliver the passion, but the strings got the message. The third movement brings a chilling march-like theme, followed by a second theme that gives the pianist a knuckle-busting marathon with a multitude of cascading figures. The finale is one of music’s all-time thrills. Morales delivered every note on time, with a bit less bravura than most but with ample fortitude. A clean, somewhat objective performance -- beautiful, but not extraordinary.

MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine

Second contender: David Helfgott On April 6 at the Hagia Eirene Museum, again with İDSO, Australian pianist David Helfgott performed the concerto that was in the movie that made him famous. Helfgott is the subject of the 1996 Oscar-winning film, “Shine,” about a mentally troubled pianist who manages to overcome his illness enough to triumph in concert with “Rach 3.” Because of the celebrity status the film gives him, his concert tours around the world are sold out and the media eats him up. Audiences respond to him via his story and the result is a night of adulation and support for his struggle and for his musicianship -- which is considerable, despite a few bizarrities I’m still scratching my head about. There are plenty of lesser-known genius-level pianists who would love to have a crack at this concerto on a world tour and have the media shower them with the kind of attention Helfgott gets. And how does Helfgott get attention? He’s got an act on the stage that rivals Harpo Marx’s shenanigans. He’s a hyperactive child who is in constant motion, he uses a thumbs-up hand motion at every opportunity (even in the middle of a piece), and audibly talks, growls and sings his way through the concerto. If he’s not playing for a minute or two (even though the orchestra is), he turns to the audience and gives them the thumbs-up routine as if to say “Isn’t this great?” His playing at times reminded me of an overeager freshman conservatory student who typically takes everything at breakneck speed because he hasn’t learned about subtlety and finesse yet. While Helfgott is a master at speed (in fact, that’s really where he excels -- his extraordinarily nimble fingers toss off the famous “Flight of the Bumblebee” like it’s a simple warm-up exercise), the other elements in the performance are suspect in two ways, in my opinion. Firstly, he uses the damper pedal so much that it makes the music bleed all over itself; secondly, he doesn’t know how to build a climax. Everything in Helfgott’s book is a climax. After a while, it starts to sound like so much hammering; if everything is loud, where can you go from there? Were there some good things? Definitely. Helfgott’s ability to punch out the structural points in this concerto, which often tends to ramble and wander, worked beautifully in the swimmy acoustics of Hagia Eirene. He does render a remarkably vivid performance, even if troublingly self-indulgent at times. Helfgott has enough substantial musical chops and even more oddball charisma to bring new people into the concert hall. In the first half of the concert he played three solos including Franz Liszt’s dark and demonic “Dante” Sonata -- not exactly easy listening -- and there wasn’t a peep in the house as everyone gave him full attention. The team of student ushers who crammed themselves onto the balcony staircase turned off their cell phones, stopped talking and listened to Liszt and Rachmaninoff; that’s got to be better brain food than the latest hip-hop DJ’s hits. And the winner? Rachmaninoff. His glorious music reached new ears this week, and that’s the most important thing of all. May’2010

Fly & Eat

Turkish Airlines Do & Co By Mel Nathan

Academy

have been on many kitchen tours but the one at Do&Co would have to be the highlight, as I have never experienced anything like it. More passengers are waking up to the benefits of having Do & Co on the menu; what a sheik place to visit, with cabin simulators that represent Turkish Airlines B- 777 First class, A-340 Business class and B 737 Economy classes, and did you know when different background lighting techniques are applied, it affects the presentation of the food? So after a Do & Co kitchen tour that supplies to Turkish Airlines, I wanted to tell all my airlines friends. We saw skilled chefs in their whites, peeling, chopping, sautéing and wielding knives, I’ve never seen so much fish being cooked. It was like watching a real chef brigade in a 5 star hotel kitchen, incidentally the Do & Co is situated at the old Gate Gourmet site, next to Ataturk International Airport – a must if you’re in the airline business and need a caterer for your airline. MeeTurkey and Food Companion International were treated to the most impressive boardroom style lunch you could lay your eyes on, what a team, with a successful mix of Turks and Austrians and Australians, it was like the perfect recipe. Asked if they would be true to their statement in providing organic foods to passengers in and out of Turkey - because that’s what the CEO Dr. Temel Kotil CEO of THY airlines told me at the Aviation Summit for Turkish Airlines held in Sydney last August? Do&Co replied that their emphasis is very much on fresh food, so it wouldn’t be out of the question. I flew with both international and also domestic with Turkish Airlines this trip. Going to Turkey I requested Y class and coming home I flew D class, with a stop over in Singapore. The nuts I received in Y class on all THY flights were roasted hazelnuts and fresh. I am always surprised to hear how many passengers are allergic to peanuts, and why do so many airlines serve them as an interim snack with refreshment drinks? I felt very healthy after eating THY food; they supplied so much fresh fruit and vegetables. I really felt like I was on a health farm, anyone would love flying with Turkish Airlines. Dr. Temel Kotil fom THY told me they will be serving Turkish food out of Sydney when they come next year. How about that, when over 60 nationalities are flying out of one city – I am sure they will all love Turkish food from Do & Co through to Istanbul. When I quizzed Executive Chef Prakash Chand at Alpha Flight Services Australia in Sydney about this he said, untrue and how can you keep 60 nationalities happy – you cannot serve just Middle Eastern Food out of Sydney it normally wouldn’t work. But then I want to fly Turkish airlines to experience their cuisine. He says it’s more about international food like all the 5 UAE carriers do? So there could be a call for a culinary debate when we meet next time? If Turkish airlines stick to their word they could be cutting edge in the airline world – about 60,00 passengers fly to and from Turkey to Australia each year. We look forward to flying from

Sydney to Istanbul in early 2011. A tip for passengers who want to get some of that intangible, though often elusive thing called ambience into their flights – do that I did on my very hospitable Turkish Airlines flight home from Turkey. Accept your meal with a glass of Raki then open up your senses, it’s about what you taste! DO & CO FACTS IN BRIEF: • Customer satisfaction increased from 49% to 93% (98% in 2010!) • 25 million meals per year, servicing more than 60 airlines • Turkish Airlines to become one of the leading quality service airlines of the world • Double digit savings for Turkish Airlines compared to the past • Market leader in Turkey (appr. 70 %), one of the fastest growing markets • Most modern cabin crew training center in Europe • State of the art interior design to reflect quality as essential part of our common company culture • Dedicated training sessions • General attitude / personalized hospitality programs • Intensive cabin service training • Special galley courses (F&B and heating and plating guidelines) • 3 independent “class rooms” B- 777 First class A-340 Business class B-737 Economy class • Original galley designs and galley equipments (ovens, coffee makers etc.) • Real food training and service style simulations • Full video training • They’re a Gourmet Entertainment Company Key data 50/50 JV between DO & CO and Turkish Airlines operating 9 airline catering units in Turkey market leader in Turkey (appr. 70 %), one of the fastest growing markets between 500 - 650 take offs per day - 25 million meals per year, servicing more than 60 airlines customer satisfaction increased from 49% to 93 % ! double digit savings for Turkish Airlines compared to the past Vision Turkish Airlines to become one of the leading quality service airlines of the world use hospitality and onboard service as advantage - above all in a difficult economical environment “Culinary and hospitality ambassador of Turkey” - as marketing tool for the airline and the country high quality onboard service is definitely COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE ! and not only a critical cost driver 3

Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. IZMIR

Izmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. It is Turkey’s first port for exports and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader among the twenty that Turkey counts. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa), and under either larger companies or SME’s, affirm their name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity. Izmir is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism and gender roles. The Izmir Convention & Visitors Bureau (Izmir CVB) was founded in 2007 by Izmir Tourism Promotion Foundation (IZTAV), as a non-profitable, independent of any marketing structure information exchange bureau. Izmir CVB’s mission is to promote the city’s rich cultural and natural assets and it’s great potential on a national and international level and is seeking guidelines and best practice to develop the city’s congress tourism.
