Destination Branding Destination branding has become a very important competitive factor in deciding today’s tourism industry. Countries looking to market themselves as the destination of choice for travellers has to take into consideration the valuable insights as; 1)Safety 2)Security 3)Reputation In most cases Safety and Security is more important for travellers than the cost of travel, even during economical crisis times. This is an indication of times of regional unrest at a popular destination. Tourist Boards has a vital role to play in shaping international perceptions of their country to encourage tourism growth as REPUTATION is also a key factor. We are bidding for 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Turkey and all the above factors will play an important role in decision making. But this time around, we have matched that 20-year dream with commitment and capacity: now the city is ready to deliver. Istanbul has transformed itself since our last bid. The city has spent an average of $1.5 billion on transport upgrades every year since 2005, and by 2018 another $10 billion will have been spent on a series of
groundbreaking projects: new Bosphorus road and rail crossings, significant enhancements to public transport and road networks, and the world’s largest international airport. This city has been a physical and philosophical meeting point for a thousand years, and we’re getting better connected by the day. Istanbul has also earned a formidable reputation as a trusted host of some of the biggest properties in world sport.

As the 2012 European Capital of Sport, Istanbul hosted 12 major international sporting events, including the WTA Championships, the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships and the FINA World Championships. We have shown time and again that we can provide the conditions athletes need to compete at their best – but with a unique Eurasian flavour you can’t find anywhere else. But perhaps the most important difference is that this time around, the whole of Turkey is right behind the

bid. The level of government support for Istanbul 2020 is unprecedented in Turkey. For the first time ever, the bid to host the country’s first ever Olympic and Paralympic Games was launched personally by the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. We have created a powerful public-private partnership. Our team of National Sponsors is a “Who’s Who” of Turkey’s global brands, and they have contributed the largest private sector investment in any sports bid in Turkey’s history.

And of course, the people of Turkey want the Games. 94% of respondents in Istanbul are in favour of hosting the Games, and 23 million Turkish sports fans have already expressed a desire to purchase Olympic tickets, based on substantive polling. We have set the lowest price tickets at just $10, so they will be accessible to as many people as possible. If we are given the honour of hosting the Games, the Olympic Family can expect a truly unforgettable reception.
What are Istanbul’s main strengths? And weaknesses? The strong alignment of stakeholders and the growing pool of event-hosting experience here mean that we have been able to develop a concept that is founded on technical excellence. We are totally focused on the needs of athletes: today’s athletes, 2020’s athletes, and the athletes of future generations. We’ve set up our Olympic Village to offer sportsmen and women maximum comfort and convenience, with accommodation, training facilities and social spaces all co-located in a single state-of-the-art precinct. Our compact intercontinental concept offers average Village-tovenue travel times of just 16 minutes. We can promise this level of technical excellence thanks to one of the most fertile financial markets on the planet. Last year’s sovereign credit rating upgrade to Investment Grade is expected to trigger an inflow of up to $32 billion in the next two years. Experts predict that Turkey will be the fastest-growing OECD economy from 2011-2017 and Istanbul’s economy alone is now larger than that of 12 countries in the European Union. But of course, the city is the real
star: Istanbul just offers the perfect stage for making history. This would be the first ever Games to take place across two continents simultaneously. Just imagine: you could watch beach volleyball in Asia in the morning, rugby in Europe in the afternoon, and in the evening join a celebration on the buzzing banks of the Bosphorus. What an experience. There’s too much potential in this city to talk about weaknesses – I’d much rather discuss opportunities. Istanbul 2020’s Games vision is aligned perfectly to The 2023 Master Plan: Turkey’s long-term development programme that culminates in the centenary of the Republic in 2023. That means we are more closely connected to municipal and national development objectives than any other bid in history. Many of the delivery frameworks and partners that will be responsible for realising our vision are already in place, already activated and already delivering tangible results. Istanbul 2020 is pulling together the huge appetite and capacity for growth that exists in Turkey today.

How is the campaign going? We have had some excellent feedback from the Olympic Family so far. The Observer Programme during London 2012, and the Debriefing Seminars in Rio, were absolutely invaluable for our bid team as we fine-tuned a concept that would deliver outstanding levels of service in a Games activated across an entire megacity. We passed an important milestone in January when we officially submitted our Candidature File to the IOC in Lausanne, and now we are already focusing on the next one: the visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission in March. Our main challenge there is going to be doing justice to our fascinating city in just four days – we wish we could host them for a fortnight!

What would hosting the Games mean for the city? Istanbul would leave a profound and lasting legacy, not just for Istanbul and Turkey but for the region and the entire Olympic Movement. We plan to build twenty brand new world-class venues and significantly upgrade a further five. They will be a major addition to the sports world’s inventory, and they will empower Turkey and other nations in the region to realise a massive untapped sporting potential. Bringing the Games to Turkey – and the region – for the very first time would create a generation of opportunities for
the region’s young people. Istanbul 2020 would arrive at a unique moment in the history of Turkey and the region, three years out from the celebration of the Republic’s centenary. Turkey has Europe’s youngest population, with nearly half under the age of 25. Turkey’s first Games would offer a once-in-a-generation opportunity to harness the ambition and dynamism of this young, rapidly developing market. Now is the time for Istanbul. But it’s not just about us. A technically excellent Games staged in a setting

that makes history and captures the public imagination would fully energise the Olympic brand worldwide. Istanbul offers a channel to a dynamic and growing region of the world providing new sporting and commercial markets for the Olympic and Paralympic Movements as well as all International Federations. Istanbul 2020 will partner with the Olympic Movement in staging a celebration of unity in diversity. Together we will inspire the world and create a more harmonious international community.

Istanbul 2020 Olympic Delegation at 76th AIPS Congress in Sochi A delegation of Istanbul 2020 Olympic media experts today demonstrated the Bid Committee’s plans for welcoming the world’s media to Turkey with a presentation to leading international sports journalists at the 76th Association Internationale de la Press Sportive [AIPS] Congress in the host city of the next Winter Games, Sochi, Russia. On stage for Istanbul 2020 were Ali Kiremitçioğlu, CEO of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee; Esat Yılmaer, the National Olympic Committee of Turkey’s Media Director and first Vice President of AIPS; and Murat Ağca, a senior sports journalist and a member of the Istanbul 2020 Media Team. In front of over 450 AIPS Congress delegates, they described a media operations concept based around one of the most compact media footprints in Olympic history. The IBC/MPC and the 16,500-bed Media Village will be co-located in the Olympic Park, 15 minutes from the airport and with average travel times within the Olympic Park of just five minutes. A further 3,500 media hotel rooms will be distributed among the four venue zones to maximise convenience for the media.

Ali Kiremitçioğlu, speaking in French, introduced some of the key themes behind Istanbul 2020’s Games concept: “The best Olympic stories are set against a memorable backdrop. Istanbul is a city that bridges together people, ideas, and, of course, continents. It has always been a powerful theatre: for politics; for geography; for philosophy; for culture. It has been a meeting point for millennia. This is where East meets West; where tradition meets innovation; where youth meets excellence; where capacity meets opportunity. The stories we share from the Istanbul 2020 Games will affect millions of people in many ways.” The Istanbul 2020 presentation highlighted a number of other mediafriendly proposals designed to ensure Turkey’s first ever Games are the most widely covered in history. Istanbul 2020 will offer a free wi-fi based Games-time information service accessible by handheld device, and a second satellite media centre at the International Convention and Exhibition Centre. This state-of-the-art facility will offer panoramic views over the Bosphorus and will serve the purpose of increasing services for the media while showcasing Istanbul’s beauty. Esat Yılmaer underlined Istanbul 2020’s promise to the global media community: “I have been part of the working press at seven Olympic Games and four Olympic Winter Games and I have seen first-hand what the media need to do their job in an effective, accurate and timely manner. Istanbul provides a setting like no other. For the 2020 Games, this will be complemented by an unparalleled working environment. Murat Ağca added: “Our people, a new culture, are poised for this moment. Turkey’s Olympic Law, enacted in 1992, reflects our relentless desire to embrace the power of sport. And our Master Plan for our own country reflects our capacity to deliver this great dream. The Istanbul 2020 Games will be a bridge to a new culture, and, thanks to the media, a bridge to an historic impact.” A further four members of the Istanbul 2020 Media Team travelled to the next Olympic and Paralympic host city. The team is looking to gather insight and best practice from witnessing the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee at work, and to better understand the needs and priorities of the world’s Olympic media.

Governments of Turkey and Greece Sign Accord on Istanbul 2020 Greece has pledged its full support to Turkey’s bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games after the Prime Ministers of both countries signed an historic agreement, underlining once again the power of the Olympic Movement to build bridges. The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signed the agreement with the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Antonis Samaras, following their meetings at the second High Level Cooperation Council in Istanbul yesterday and on Sunday. The agreement is one of more than 20 signed at the summit aimed at boosting bilateral relations across sectors like tourism, energy and telecommunications. A joint declaration from the offices of the Prime Ministers committed
both countries to “engage in cooperation with regard to the technical and related aspects in the organisation of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games” and “explore ways of enhancing the benefits of the Olympics for the two countries” and the entire region if Istanbul is awarded the Games. Hasan Arat, Chairman of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee, attended the signing ceremony in Istanbul, along with a number of senior ministers and business leaders from Turkey and Greece. He said: “The ties between Turkey and Greece have been strengthened today, thanks to the power of the Olympic Movement to build bridges. The closer cooperation between our countries will be a valuable and lasting legacy of our bid.” IOC member and President of the Turkish NOC, Ugur Erdener, said, “This is a very symbolic agreement for Turkey as we look to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to our country for the very first time. Greece is the spiritual home of the Olympic Movement and I hope this connection will continue to grow the huge passion for hosting the Games. 94% of the people of Istanbul are behind Istanbul 2020. We have had very close relations with Greece on sport for many years. I believe that this agreement will create even more opportunities.”
Fashionable Istanbul Plays to the Olympic Beat With the IOC visit to assess Istanbul’s 2020 Olympic bid, the city is underlining its credentials as a worldclass centre for cultural events by hosting the Istanbul Fashion Week whilst also announcing Alicia Keys as a headline act for the 20th Istanbul Jazz Festival later this summer. Istanbul Fashion Week was an international showcase for talented and internationally acclaimed Turkish designers such as Tanju Babacan and Begüm Salihoglu. Thousands of extra visitors were staying in Istanbul for this week’s fashion extravaganza, helping reinforce Istanbul 2020’s message to the IOC that, as the fifth most visited tourist destination in the world with 11.6 million visitors in 2012, Istanbul is more than
ready to welcome the Olympic family in 2020. Hasan Arat, Istanbul 2020 Chairman, commented, “Istanbul Fashion Week brings the city alive and the buzz it creates is the ideal scenesetter for the IOC Evaluation Commission’s arrival next week. Once again, Istanbul has provided a dramatic backdrop for a world-class event. Fashion Week reflects Istanbul’s diverse culture as well as the creative and innovative talent that exists within our very youthful population.” The Istanbul Jazz Festival is also set to be another world-class event for Istanbul in July. This week, festival organisers announced that R&B and soul singer, Alicia Keys, will play at the opening night. Keys, who has won 14 Grammy awards, will be performing in Turkey for the first time and will help mark the 20th edition of the Istanbul Jazz Festival. Professor Ugur Erdener, IOC member and President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, said, “Istanbul’s ability to attract world stars is a further sign that Turkey’s lure as an entertainment hub resonates throughout the world. Turkey’s dream is to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During the IOC Evaluation Commission’s visit next week, we can point to past, current and future examples of our ability to deliver events with a global reach.”
Istanbul 2020 to Promote Olympic Brand in New Markets Istanbul 2020 reaffirmed its commitment to building the Olympic brand worldwide on Day 2 of the IOC Evaluation Commission’s visit, with a pledge to unleash the full force of support behind Turkey’s public and rapidly growing private sectors. Three clear strengths came out of the Day 2 morning briefings. The first is Turkey’s financial stability, the second is Turkey’s dynamic and market-savvy audience, and the third is the bid’s commitment to building the image and reputation of Turkey alongside the Olympic and Paralympic brands. Ali Koç, Board Member of KOÇ Holding, addressed the press today. KOÇ Holding is in the Fortune 500 and The Boston Consulting Group’s “Rising Global Stars 2013” and five of the KOÇ Holding group’s companies are in Turkey’s top 10. Ali Koç commented on the private sector’s commitment to the Istanbul 2020 bid: “I am here today on behalf of the business community of Turkey to express our readiness to help one of the most important projects in Turkey’s history. Our business leaders see the Olympics as an incomparable opportunity to tell our story to the world, to rebrand Turkey, to demonstrate our growing capabilities, and to compete with the best companies in the world. We are truly experiencing a dramatic transformation with a rapidly growing economy; with an expanded business mindset; with sophisticated city planning and with careful management of Turkey’s cultural legacy. Turkey’s goal is to become one of the world’s 10 largest economies, in keeping with the vision of our 2023 Master Plan. Turkey is changing, Turkey is coming of age. Turkish business leaders understand the power of the Olympic movement to build the brand
loyalties that are so important in a growing economy.” Commenting on the importance of building the Olympic brand, Hasan Arat, Chairman of Istanbul 2020, said: “Turkey has a great commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Movements. We have been bidding for 20 years! We know how important marketing is for Istanbul 2020 and for the Olympic and Paralympic brands. I have often spoken of Istanbul 2020 as a Bridge to Excellence; Turkey’s strong economy and unwavering government and private sector support will help guarantee that excellence in 2020.” The panel also revealed more detail about ticketing for the Games to the Evaluation Commission today. Ticket prices would begin at 10 US dollars for the Olympic Games and five US dollars for the Paralympic Games. Istanbul 2020 will look to adopt and enhance special ticketing arrangements such as the “Follow My Team” and “Athletes’ Family and Friends” progammes with other high-tech plans for an online spectator guide which would tailor daily itineraries for each guest, based on their location and interests. In total, 7.9 million tickets will be available with a budgeted generation of 444 million US dollars for the Olympic and Paralympic competitions combined. Since 1992, the Turkish government has invested several hundred millions of dollars into Turkey’s sports and sports venues. Between now and 2020, a further four billion US dollars will be invested through the National Sports Plan, enabled through the Olympic Law, ensuring financial guarantees and an ongoing cash flow for Istanbul 2020.

“Turkey has been exhibiting at ATM for 15 years now and this year we’re returning with an insatiable commitment to deliver beyond what is expected from the current trends; and as always, we are excited and certain to reap an entirely new wave of benefits from joining the fair.” Sedat Gonulluoglu, Turkish Cultural and Information Attaché commented. Tourism to Turkey from GCC region has been experiencing phenomenal growth. According to official statistics of Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2012 compared to 2011 number of tourists from UAE increased by 35.11%, from Bahrain by 38.37%, from Kuwait by 56.59% and from Qatar by 82.37%. And in February 2013 alone compared to same period in 2012 number of tourists from UAE increased by 65.71%, from Bahrain by 134.24%, from Kuwait by 89.82% and Qatar by 110.34%.

“These numbers just contain the citizens of those countries. As you know there are too many expats who work in the region and they also travel to Turkey a lot.” Said Sedat Gonulluoglu. “In 2013 we are expecting 65% increase from GCC” Sedat Gonulluoglu added. “This year we will be promoting cultural tourism in this region. We are sure Arab tourists would love to see amazing Cappadocia and the great cave hotels in there.” Sedat Gonulluoglu also said. This goes in line with the Republic’s goal to sustain the upward trend and to attract 60 million tourists in year 2023 for 100th year of Republic of Turkey. Last year Turkey hosted 32 million tourists, taking to consideration growing popularity and upward trend 60 million tourists in 2023 seems well within the reach.

Cultural Routes
A land and sea alliance
T
he most famous, first navigators in history were the Phoenicians - based initially at Tyre, in Lebanon, and later at Carthage, in north Africa. They are famous for three things: a purple dye known as murex, the fast ship with two banks of oars called the bireme and built with the famous cedar of Lebanon trees, and their alphabet, which formed the basis of most later written languages including Greek, Lycian and later Latin. Their trade with the Roman and Greek colonies around the Mediterranean included metal and mineral sourced in Cyprus and Spain, and their colonies were spread all around the Mediterranean coast. The Phoenicians were active from about the 14th C to the 1st C BC, succumbing in the end to the Roman empire. The Rotta dei Fenici (Phoenician

Route) has just celebrated 10 years as an important member of Europe’s 24 Cultural Routes. Recently re-certified, the route circles the Mediterranean, visiting all the ports which were once home to the seafaring Phoenicians. Their main focus is on Italy, but at their recent meeting in Sardinia, representatives from Tunisia, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Sardinia, Greece, Lebanon and Palestine attended. In 2013, a lone yachtsman, Alberto Rudi, will sail the western part of the route, starting in Carthago in Spain and finishing at Carthage in Tunisia. The land element of the route follows Hannibal’s march on Rome in 218203 BC, including his celebrated crossing of the Alps with his band of African elephants. Ther are also a group of short walking routes in
Sicily. The Turkish Culture Routes Society have signed an agreement of association with the Phoenician Route and were invited to the 10th annual meeting in Sardinia. The meeting was in Pula, a small holiday centre on the south coast, close the the Phoenician site at Nora. The town welcomed us eagerly - during the conference we were invited to sumptuous meals at the local tourism school, entertained by dance troups and visited two historical sites. The conference centred on a meeting hall facing the town square; some sessions were restricted to the members, others open to an interested and lively audience of local people. the touristic advantages it offers. A representative will attend the Crossroads of Europe meeting in Toulouse, taking our maps and brochures. One of the most important advantages for us is the change to attend the Summer School for Culture Route managers in Sardinia - Hü Eryurt, our manager, who speaks Italian, will represent us there. Mme Marie-Paule Sans Chagrin, newly retired from the French Culture Ministry, will shortly be visiting the Eastern Mediterranean to discuss setting up a permanent Culture Route management education facility. Also present at the meeting were Silvia Costa, European MEP, who speaks especially on Cultural Heritage, and has worked to protect the Institute of Cultural Routes budget from cuts. She emphasised the necessity of making Culture Routes environmentally sustainable as well as culturally and socially. Penelope Denu, of the Institute of Cultural Routes, described the Institute’s future program - in 2014, it
is likely that Azerbaijan will host the annual meeting and precede it with a tourism fair on Cultural Route tourism. It was suggested that Turkey could usefully prepare for this by forming some alliances with Armenia and neighbouring countries. So, many opportunitites have opened up to Turkey as a result of this meeting. We hope that Turkey will sign the Enlarged Partial Agreement in June and so continue to move closer to European Cultural Route organisation. The aim is to initiate Turkey’s first international Culture Route, in partnership with a minimum of two other countries. To this end, we have been invited to a meeting hosted by the Greek museums of Saloniki in September, where the Greek Government will sign an agreement to

support three major routes which cross Greek territory. The Culture Routes Association has asked the Ministry to participate in this meeting and consider forming Cultural Routes links with Greece. The link with the Phoenician Route is an opportunity for many tourism towns in Southern Turkey to form alliances which will promote coastal and sailing tourism. It could also involve our major museums, especially the Underwater Archaeology Museum at Bodrum and the newly planned museum at Demre.

will bring the commemoration of events at Gallipoli and a time to remember that conflicts have passed and sacrifice has 100 years later, brought all sides together in closer ties and friendly relations. To encourage a greater understanding between those countries and the events a century ago Brian Crocker and Sevil Ă–ren from the Cultural Routes Association of Turkey have proposed the development of historic walking trails at Gallipoli. Currently there are a number of tours of the battlefields; some of them lead by professional and keen amateur historians. The purpose of the proposed trails is to provide everyone with the opportunity to explore the history of the Gallipoli campaign independently in a manner that will respect those who sacrificed their lives and to protect the environment. While Australians and New Zealanders have shown a great

By Brian Crocker interest in the site, growing numbers of Turks themselves are keen visitors in their quest to acquire a deeper understanding of their own history. British visitors are also interested in researching the battlefields and attempting to gain an understanding of the experience of relatives who fought in the war and of the campaign as it was conducted in the field. The proposed walking trails will focus on the historical events of the Gallipoli campaign and give the walker an opportunity to explore the events in the field. It is proposed that the trails focus on significant historical aspects of the trail from both a tactical point of view as well as attempting to draw out the experiences of the common soldier. The trails will centre on the three main battlefronts at Cape Helles, Lone Pine and Suvla Bay with the potential to join trails to create a longer route. While it may not be possible in every situation to include all of the trails which were of direct historical significance there is
MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine
the potential to include trails especially those in an elevated position which will afford views and understanding of the battlefields. The project will include the publication of walking and historical notes including maps. If the project gains significant support it is intended to use the same data to develop an application for GPS enabled phones and handheld devices. This will allow walkers to access a variety of information specific to their location. This may include historical information of an ethno-botanical interest. The author is not aware of research as to how plants may have been used on the battlefields but such information adds to a greater understanding of the conditions under which both soldiers and civilians fought to survive and would enhance the walkers understanding and experience in the field. Additionally, it is planned to place interpretive signs along the trails in Turkish and English. These signs will provide historical information
and explanatory diagrams of the terrain. It would also greatly enhance the experience of the walker to include some of the considerable literature which emanated from the experiences of soldiers in the field. If it is possible to place poems or letters in a geographical location this would draw out the power of both. Of course this would also be true for historical photography, illustration and art. The trials will also focus on the experience of the civilian population as they experienced the effects of the war whether it be in identifying the paths they used in an attempt to carry on with their daily lives or at the time of evacuation. Today local people still use many of the local in the project to initiate from Turkey, Australia, in a joint project in the and the transfer of and practice of modern aspect which needs take full advantage of cultural tourism. Already local people have shown considerable initiative in operating small museums. It is hoped that the trail project will bring more visitors to the villages of Gelibolu so that local people can share their history with everyone. The design of the trails would as much as possible include war relics, memorials, museums and cemeteries. Due to the sensitivity of the site the design and implementation of such a project will need to be carried out in close consultation with historians, the Gellibolu National Park and other stakeholders. With such a rich source of historical data available it should be possible to reveal the history of Gallipoli in a manner that allows the visitor to experience the terrain and grasp its significance in understanding the historical events. The project provides a great opportunity to examine the role of cartography in the campaign. The accuracy and detail of the topographical maps employed by all sides should provide the trail user with a greater sense of how those who were engaged in the campaign understood the terrain. There is a great potential
of the environment whether it be the starkness of Cape Helles and the ridges above Suvla Bay or the sombre gullies bathed in tranquil green. Meet at the Festivals
Istanbul Jazz Festival Celebrates its 20th year
I
stanbul Jazz Festival gears toward bringing jazz stars and audiences together for the 20th time in July with over 40 concerts that will take place in 14 different venues with the participation of over 400 local and international artists. The programme for the 20th Istanbul Jazz Festival is unveiled at a press meeting held at Salon IKSV. Following the opening speech of IKSV General Director Görgün Taner, Executive Vice President of Garanti Bank Nafiz Karadere said: “Sustained with faith, passion and patience, Istanbul Jazz Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary. As Garanti Bank we are very happy to collaborate with IKSV for the past 16 years. We will wholeheartedly continue to support the festival, which plays a major role in advancing and spreading of jazz culture throughout Turkey, with our brand ‘Garanti Jazz Green.” Later on, Istanbul Jazz Festival Director Pelin Opcin gave information on the concerts and 20th year special projects in the festival lineup. The press meeting was followed by a reception at X Restaurant & Bar with the participation of prominent names from the jazz scene. Following the reception, the guests enjoyed a concert by Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo Duo as part of the festival’s 20th year. Hailed as one of the most important saxophonist in jazz music Branford Marsalis gave his first concert in Istanbul at Salon IKSV with pianist Joey Calderazzo, whom he met in the early 90’s and played together for many years. The visuals of 20th Istanbul Jazz Festival poster are composed by Orhan Pamuk. The author’s handwriting and the Seagull motif featured in his drawings and patterns are used in the festival poster designed by Bülent Erkmen. A special video message by Erkmen regarding the design of the festival poster is shown at the press meeting. About the choice he made Bülent

Erkmen said: “Orhan Pamuk was interested in drawing before writing and he never lost his connection to it as a writer. In his notebooks where he writes down his novels there are patterns that seep through pages and there are writings that seep into his drawings. He regularly features seagulls and crows in his drawings and patterns. I chose the Seagull as a symbol of Istanbul and my personal connection to jazz. The Seagull detail in the image I chose comes from a bigger drawing. In that way, as the Seagull flies fast on the white blank of the page, he carries Istanbul with him as it flaps its wings and shrieks while Orhan Pamuk’s fluttering handwriting accompanies him.” Istanbul Jazz Festival, which provides audiences with new discovery opportunities through its eclectic programme
and various venues it uses, will continue to let music lovers experience firsts by organising concerts in unusual venues. In addition to the usual hosts of the festival such as Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall, Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Stage, Haliç Congress Center, Istanbul Modern, Istanbul Archeological Museum, Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum and Salon IKSV; the new venues that will be featured in this year’s festival are Embassy of Germany Tarabya Summer Residence, Consulate General of Austria - Austrian Cultural Office Garden, Feriye Restaurant, Istanbul Technical University Maçka Campus Mustafa Kemal Lecture Hall, KüçükÇiftlik Park, Rahmi M. Koç Museum and Imperial Garden of Yıldız Palace.
Istanbul will be the global host city of the second “International Jazz Day” on 30 April, which was inaugurated last year as a collaborative initiative between UNESCO and Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The celebrations for the “International Jazz Day” will take place on Tuesday 30 April, and will be jointly organised with the collaboration of The Republic of Turkey and the host city partnership of Istanbul Jazz Festival. Istanbul Jazz Festival’s sponsor Garanti Bank will also be one of the sponsors of this event. In addition to the gala concert that will be held at the Hagia Eirene Museum on the evening of Tuesday 30 April, “International Jazz Day” celebrations will also feature conferences, roundtable discussions, master classes, jazz vocal workshops, film screenings and several other concerts in various venues throughout the city. The concerts will be broadcast live via UNESCO, US Department of State and International Jazz Day official websites. These unforgettable concerts will be recorded to be broadcasted later on public television channels around the world. 20th Istanbul Jazz Festival is also supported by Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Beyoğlu Municipality. The leading sponsor of all festivals of İKSV is Eczacıbaşı Holding, the Official Airlines is Turkish Airlines, the Official Communications Sponsor is Vodafone, the Official Carrier is DHL Express, and the Service Sponsor is GFK.

ICCA Launches New Resource for International Association Meeting Planners Following an extensive consultation and development process, in the second half of April 2013 ICCA has launched an Association Portal, specifically designed for association executives to assist them in organising quality meetings. Qualifying association executives can register on http://associations.iccaworld.com to access a password-protected section in the ICCA website, which draws together ICCA’s unique data and specialised resources to association executives who are responsible for organising international meetings. The ICCA Association Portal is a safe and trusted environment for association executives, where they are not approached with commercial intentions. The Portal enables association meeting planners to access their own meeting profile in the ICCA database, and to share insights with other association colleagues. They can easily search for the leading specialists in handling, transporting and accommodating international events (ICCA members) and access meetings resource publications on topics such as bidding and decisionmaking processes for associations, contracting with major congress & convention venues, negotiating with hotels, working with convention bureaux, and social media for events. Other resources available are the ICCA Statistics Reports, case studies and hosted buyer event information. Associations can also request advice on how to improve their bid manual. ICCA CEO Martin Sirk: “The ICCA Board and my management team are all delighted to be able to launch this new service for associations in this celebratory, 50th anniversary year of ICCA’s existence. It marks an important new
phase in our efforts to connect ICCA members and associations as part of a single, organic, business community, and to provide association executives with easy pathways to their peers, something that has previously been missing but much needed.” This new product, although aimed at associations, will benefit ICCA members by enhancing and strengthening ICCA’s relationship with the international association community. Initial reactions to the Association Portal have been very positive and the ICCA Board will be presenting this new product in more depth to members at the upcoming mid-year Sector meetings in May 2013 in Frankfurt, Germany.
IMEX Launches New Education Event for Corporate Planners IMEX in Frankfurt 2013 will see the launch of a new education and networking event designed specifically for corporate meeting planners and senior corporate executives. The pre-show event is attracting considerable interest with over 50 buyers expected to take part and participants from Amway, Estee Lauder, Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co already confirmed. Attendance at the new event is open to both hosted buyers and visitors from the corporate sector. IMEX has offered special events for corporate buyers in the past but, using its experience from the successful Association Day programme combined with focus group research, the company has developed this brand new format. “Exclusively Corporate @ IMEX” uses the Association Day as its model to allow corporate buyers to attend the award-winning trade show whilst also taking part in expertly facilitated education and networking. The Exclusively Corporate educational programme officially begins at midday on Monday 20 May – the day before the trade show opens - with a networking lunch. This is followed by a mix of general sessions, open space discussions and case studies. The post-lunch general session will feature three short TED-Style presentations from senior corporate executives, followed by facilitated discussion with the audience. Leading the panel will be Des Duggan, Manager Education and Staffing IBM Inside Sales Europe and Meredith Smith, Director Travel and Meetings Asia Pacific and Japan for Merck & Co. Thereafter the group will split, with senior executives joining a 4-hour facilitated discussion and benchmarking programme, led by Terri Breining and Kimberly Meyer, who also facilitate the IMEX America Executive Meetings Forum. The new event programme has been carefully designed to fit around the work commitments of its corporate audience. Participants are being flown into Frankfurt on Sunday evening for a networking dinner sponsored by Fairmont, Raffles, Swissotel. They will stay at the prestigious Villa Kennedy Hotel where Monday morning has been left free for them to catch up on work, do Frankfurt city tours, site visits or undertake business meetings before education and networking begin at midday. At the close of Monday, the group will be invited to attend the annual SiteNite Europe reception or be otherwise entertained. All of the corporate executives will stay on for the IMEX trade show on Tuesday 21st May with long-haul participants attending the show until Thursday 23rd May. Says Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group: “We know that the needs of corporate meeting executives are very different to those of other planners attending the show. This new programme is designed to address their need for a private environment in which to learn from each other through case studies and open dialogue. The sessions are intended to be very interactive and provoke forward-thinking discussions with actionable strategies for them to take back to the office. The private and exclusive nature of the event makes it very unique and will provide great added value to those buyers taking part.”

ATA Announces New Dates for its 38th Annual World Congress in Cameroon The Africa Travel Association (ATA) announced today that new dates have been set for the 38th annual ATA World Congress in Cameroon. The event will be held from Wednesday, October 16 to Monday, October 21, 2013. After discussions between the Cameroonian Minister of Tourism and Leisure, the Local Organizing Congress Committee and ATA’s International Board of Directors, it was agreed to change the dates of the congress. “The key stakeholders decided that
it would allow further time for the host country [Cameroon] to handle the logistics of the sizable event,” said Edward Bergman, ATA’s Executive Director. “Shifting the annual congress away from its historical date in May to October would also be a more convenient time on the travel industry calendar to host such an important industry event.” Arik Air will be the official U.S. congress carrier and will offer discounted rates to Douala for delegates attending the 2013 ATA Congress in Cameroon. ANKARA
A
nkara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great),
and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity
as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.

he former capital of three successive empires-Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman-the city is a fascinating mixture of past and present, old and new, modern and traditional. The museums, churches, palaces, mosques and bazaars, and the sights of natural beauty seem inexhaustible. As you recline on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected in the windows and slender minarets on the opposite shore you understand, suddenly and profoundly, why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build on this remarkable site. In addition to its unique historical and cultural background and innumerable
attractions, modern hotels, exclusive restaurants, nightclubs, cabarets, bazaars and shops make Istanbul a superb site for meetings, conferences and conventions. Istanbul is fast becoming one of the most popular international congress and exhibition destinations. IZMIR
I
zmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. It is Turkey’s first port for exports and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader among the twenty that Turkey counts. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa), and under either larger companies
or SME’s, affirm their name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity. Izmir is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism and gender roles. The Izmir Convention & Visitors Bureau (Izmir CVB) was founded in 2007 by Izmir Tourism Promotion Foundation (IZTAV), as a non-profitable, independent of any marketing structure information exchange bureau. Izmir CVB’s mission is to promote the city’s rich cultural and natural assets and it’s great potential on a national and international level and is seeking guidelines and best practice to develop the city’s congress tourism.
