Meet the Cultural Ambassadors of Turkey Turkey is nothing as it is seen from the western world especially with the presentation of the biased media of certain countries. The reason for this is that Turks and Turkey do not have a lobby perception, it is all about that. We cannot make ourselves known and represented well globally. The amount of money spent on some advertisements and promotion attempts are not sincere and do not attract the second glimpse of the public that are weary of such big shows. Labels are not that important. The important steps are being taken by individuals with their achievements accepted, prized and applauded by the whole world. Our spring issue is flowering with these silent ambassadors that have won prizes, chosen as world president and keeping Gallipoli alive by diving into joint projects with Australians. Gonul Paksoy has won the most innovative cook-book prize with her “Edible Beads” book and her “Flowers and Flavours” book will hopefully win some more world recognition. She got the prize in Paris and she deserves to be our cultural ambassador with her collections that turn into creation. Fashion and Food find their place in the visual and sensory world of creation with a rich background culture. Fatma Torun Reid, has started the work-shops of International Family Therapy Association in Turkey and succeeded in bringing the world congress to Turkey. This year she is chosen the world president of IFTA and I have all the reason to say that she is and will be our promotional ambassador for two years and more by “positive lobbying” during her presidency. 2015 is not so far away and I was searching into the depths of the activities to include in this spring issue of the joint projects concerning Gallipoli and the Anzacs for the 100th year commemoration, Savas Karakas and the “Beyond Gallipoli” emerged from the depth of the Dardanelles. Why cant we have Savas Karakas as our tourism ambassador with his genuine excitement for Turkey on land and deep down. Mark Spencer and Tim Sullivan has under water photos of “beyond Gallipoli”, they are a piece of art. They have caught the beauty in depth even though it is sad and somehow forgotten. Istanbul has become a flower city, especially a Tulip city recently. It is a sight to sore eyes, gives you the desire to walk, drive, dive into the beautiful parks and gardens of Istanbul. Thanks to Ihsan Simsek of Parks and Gardens GM of the Istanbul Municipality. We have a little chat with him in this issue as we wanted to share this beauty with the readers. Istanbul Spring Tours can be organized in the coming years. Safranbolu is a Unesco Cultural site and we have that in this issue. We will cover the other Unesco Cultural sites in our coming issues. So many exciting news in such an exciting city with such exciting people. These are the COLORS of TURKEY that make it so unique.

Congress Center 20 Haliç the newest congress center of Istanbul
The only seaside Congress Centre of Istanbul; Haliç Congress Center, is one of the new venues of Istanbul. With its unique single storey building architecture and spacious atmosphere the centre distinguishes itself. Ideally located at the shores of the famous Golden Horn, the centre is easily accessible via E5 and TEM Highways and is walking distance to Miniatürk and Rahmi Koç Museums. The book, to go on sale on May18, 2010, consists of Gönül Paksoy’s understanding of designs, showing how to interpret in universal dimensions that which has always been considered local both in Turkey and on international platforms. You will see in this book that many foods, from sage to cinnamon, from onions to potatoes, from sour cherries to mushrooms, turn into jewellery.

Who had the magic stick that turned Istanbul into a Flower City? I was curiously wondering to meet the leader and the team that was making the citizens of Istanbul so happy every spring for the past five years. The Tulips, the Judas trees, the spring and summer flowers of all kinds that were planted and looked after meticulously made Istanbul smile again somehow after so much negligence. When Istanbul is happy so are the citizens with growing energy from their environmental experience of the Tulip and flower decorated side roads, parks, hills with Judas trees.

Turkey doubles its space and participating companies this year at the Gulf Incentive Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition. GIBTM, the business travel exhibition for the meeting, conference and incentives industry is held from 28 - 30 March 2011 at the National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in Abu Dhabi. Turkish Minister was Awarded with the Medal of Honor by Austria
Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister was awarded with the medal of honor by Austrian embassy in Ankara. Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister; Ertugrul Gunay was decorated with the medal of honor due to his contributions to cultural cooperation between Turkey and Austria at the ceremony held at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. The medal is the highest to be bestowed upon a Turk by the Republic of Austria to date. Austrian ambassadress to Turkey Heidemaria Gurer delivered a speech in the ceremony, saying that Gunay contributed a lot to Turkey’s promotion in the areas of culture and tourism. Gunay said that he was proud of receiving this medal. Turkey and Austria had a great cooperation in several areas especially in archeology,

Gunay added. During the ceremony at the museum, a book titled “Efes Duvar Resimleri” (Frescoes of Ephesus), published by the Austrian Embassy in Ankara, is launched. Moreover an opening of a photo exhibition that details the most recent results of the ongoing archaeological excavations by the Austria Institute of Archaeology in Ephesus took place. n

Turkish Films Festival in Hong Kong The Izmir Association of Cinema organized the “Second Turkish Films Festival” in Hong Kong between April 13 and 17. President of the Izmir Association of Cinema, Kayhan Kirmizigul, told journalists that they came together Hong Kong spectators with Turkish movies for the second time. The Turkish Prime Ministry, Turkish Embassy in Beijing and Turkish Consulate General in Hong Kong have made important contributions to realize the Festival. The Hong Kong Turkish Films Festival is designed to promote Turkish movies in the world. About 200,000 magazines were published for the Festival and the publication was distributed free of charge. The “Second Turkish Films Festival” took place at Hong Kong’s biggest shopping mall, Elements. Turkish directors Umit Unal, Mustafa Altioklar, Emre Sahin and Murat Seker and artists Deniz Cakir, Guven Kirac, Selda Alkor, Gokhan Mumcu, Ayten Soykok, Suzan Genc, and Serdal Genc attended the Festival. Among the Turkish films to be screened at the Festival are “Mustafa”, “Bal” (Honey), “40” and “Cosmos”. n
Setur Establishes Partnership with Makyol
Turkish construction and tourism company Makyol and Setur Marina have joined forces to construct the Kaş Marina, situated at the Kaş town of Antalya in southern Turkey. Makyol, which started construction of Kaş Marina in April 2009 as a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) project, partners with the leading brand of marina industry in Turkey; Setur Marinas. Kaş Marina is expected to open in May 2011 and will have a capacity of 472 yachts, with suitable docking locations for super- and mega-yachts. Üstün Özbey, the General Manager of Setur, said that Kaş Marina will create new routes alongside the Mediterranean coast. “We will rank among the prestigious and reliable yacht marinas in the Mediterranean,” Özbey said. Setur Marinas currently operates 28 percent of Turkish marinas and has a capacity of 3,900 yachts. n

Fourth Conference on the Least Developed Countries is in Istanbul United Nations, Turkish Foreign Ministry and civil society have committed an important initiative and social responsibility project. The Fourth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC) will be held May 9-13 in İstanbul. The conference will bring together 5,000 government officials, business leaders and civil society representatives, including UN Secretary-General Ban KiMoon, President Abdullah Gül and the heads of state from several nations. Moreover, the conference; for the first time, will attract private sector and hundreds of businesspeople from LDCs and non LDCs will come together in the trade fair and business forum jointly organized by United Nations Global Compact, the Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON) and the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB). In order to better position tourism in the development agenda and maximize this potential, UNWTO has come together with seven UN agencies and programmes – the International Labour Organization (ILO), International Trade Centre (ITC), UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) – to create the UN Steering Committee
on Tourism for Development (SCTD). By harnessing the strengths and expertise of each agency and creating synergies between UN organizations, the Committee will deliver more coordinated, effective and efficient technical assistance and support to developing countries. One of the first activities of the Committee will be the holding of a Special Tourism Event at the Fourth UN Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC-IV) to be celebrated in Istanbul, Turkey, 10 May 2011. The event, ‘Promoting Tourism for Sustainable Development and Poverty Reduction’, will set the scene for a new international framework for development through tourism, providing the opportunity for LDCs, UN agencies and key players of donor countries and other institutions to find ways to foster tourism for development and create mechanisms for LDCs as they seek to combat poverty, diversify their economies and pursue inclusive growth strategies. The role of tourism in increasing LDCs’ participation in the global economy, and as a means of poverty reduction, will be the focus of the World Export Development Forum (WEDF), the International Trade Centre’s flagship event, held this year at LDC-IV in partnership with UNWTO (Istanbul, Turkey, 10-11 May 2011). The WEDF will focus on the role of the private sector for tourism-led growth and inclusive sustainable development through the creation of key pilot projects. Istanbul is going to host this UN conference, which is organized once a decade, leading discussions to address poverty reduction, capacity development and sustainable growth for LDCs for the next 10 years. n

Turkish Wines Awarded at an International Wine Competition Turkish wines have won 6 medals at the international wine competition “Vinalies Internationales”. Turkey won a gold medal and 5 silver medals at this year’s first international wine contest which brought together nearly 3,500 wines from all over the world. Commenting on the success, Ali Basman from Kavaklidere Wines said that Turkey’s success in wine-making sector would make a great contribution to the country’s promotion. Basman added that international competitions and tasting events were much more effective promotion tools than billboards in that sense. Vinalies Internationales is an international wine competition organized by the Union des Oenologues de France. Vinalies Internationales intends to emphasize the maturation capability of the wines and to honour those wines that attain a high quality level close to the optimal tasting expression of their “appellation” of origin. The competition invites over 100 judges from all over the world whose mission is to assess thousands of samples submitted to their taste buds, and appraise the specifics of the terroir they are grown on. The final objective is to honour each wine with a detailed set of tasting notes. n

The 30th Istanbul Film Festival Concludes

The International Competition Golden Tulip Award, which has been given at the Istanbul Film Festival since 1985, has been presented in memory of Şakir Eczacıbaşı with the support of the Eczacıbaşı Group since two years. The International Competition Golden Tulip Award is also supported with a 25,000 Euro monetary award also given by the Eczacıbaşı Group. 10,000 Euro is given to the director who wins the Golden Tulip Award, the Turkish company to distribute the film receives 10,000 Euros, and the remaining 5,000 Euros is presented to the film that receives the Special Jury Prize. UFO Museum Opened in Istanbul
A touring UFO museum designed by the Sirius UFO Space Sciences Research Centre opened at Forum Istanbul Shopping Mall. The museum, which is one of the first of its kind in the world, aims the documents and evidence contained in the exhibit would convince sceptics of the veracity of claims that aliens walk among us. Sirius UFO Space Science Research Centre Director Haktan Akdoğan said that the goal of the project is to introduce a global culture to Turkish people and share information proving that we are not alone in the world by displaying written and visual materials, digital photographs, secret documents, certificate of analysis, video visuals, articles and rejuvenations in the specially designed Touring UFO Museum. Akdoğan noted that the museum was a social responsibility project in the sense of science and culture. A truck designed especially for the UFO museum. The mobile museum will be set up in front of shopping malls and open for visits. Admission is free while the museum is in Istanbul. The museum and exhibition consists of all incidents related to UFOs since very early periods of our time, official NASA documents, secret documents, kidnappings, UFO photos and video from Turkey and around the world as well as specially made mockups and models. The project, which was launched in Istanbul, will travel for one year. The Touring UFO Museum will also be brought to the United States, South America and Europe. Countries like the U.K., New Zealand and Norway have begun to release their secret UFO documents. The Touring UFO Museum is open in the parking lot of Forum Istanbul Shopping Mall until April 10. Later it will travel to Caddebostan, Taksim and Şişli before leaving Istanbul for Kocaeli, Bursa, Mersin, Izmir, Ankara, Trabzon, Çeşme and Bodrum. It is expected to be visited by 1 million people by the end of the project. n

Music Festival Time for Istanbul The Istanbul Music Festival organised by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, under the sponsorship of Borusan is greeting the music lovers in its 39th year with a fully packed program. The Istanbul Music Festival, sponsored
by Borusan Holding since 2006 will take place between June 4-29 this year. Hosting three world and six Turkey premieres, the Istanbul Music Festival will host star names in Istanbul including Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Patricia Petibon, Hilary Hahn, Renée Fleming, Christoph Eschenbach, and one of the most significant orchestras of classical music, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, as well as over 600 local and foreign artists. Besides preconcert talks and colloquiums, for the first time this year master classes open to the audiences will be organized. From this year on, the Istanbul Music Festival will construct its programme with a theme. With the 39th Istanbul Music Festival’s programme that is created in line with the “Journeys to Far Away Lands” theme, the music of a vast geography ranging from the west side of America to Russia, from Spain to Buenos Aires, Venice, Indian Ocean and Mexico, will meet the festival audience. In this year’s Istanbul Music Festival,

there will be 24 concerts including, symphony and chamber orchestras, vocal concerts, chamber music and recitals. The festival this year will also attract attention with its different concert venues. As an addition to the classic venues of the festival such as the Hagia Eirene Museum, Archaeological Museum, Enameled Kiosk, Süreyya Opera House and Lutfi
Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Center, different venues like Galata Mevlevihanesi, Istanbul University Rectorate Building, Istanbul Modern and santralistanbul-Energy Museum also participate in the festival this year. From this year on, through commissioning works to the local and foreign composers, the festival is taking a significant step in enriching its contemporary music repertoire. In this context, commissioned by the Istanbul Music Festival, the world premieres of İlhan Usmanbaş’s and the young composer Turgut Pöğün’s new compositions, will take place in the scope of the festival. The programme of the 39th Istanbul Music Festival is announced in a press conference at Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus. Nicolas Cage was in Turkey
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, had a meeting today at Spa Hotel Colossae Thermal with the Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage who is in Turkey for the movie “Ghost Rider 2”. Nicolas Cage, who arrived Turkey on January 12, is filming the sequel to “Ghost Rider” in Pamukkale, Denizli. Cage met with Turkish Prime Minister at Spa Hotel Colossae Thermal in Pamukkale. Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay, the AK Party Deputy Chairman Mohamed Salih Kapusuz and Prime Minister’s daughter attended the meeting. Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage’s starring “Ghost Rider 2” continues to film the final shots. “Destination: Istanbul” project by MoMA New York The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) and MoMA Design Store will realise a special project, titled “Destination: Istanbul”. As part of the project, beginning in May 2011, the MoMA Design Store will present more than 100 products by prominent Turkish designers, selected by MoMA New York. The collection, which will reach a world-wide audience via the online MoMA Store, will also be available exclusively at the IKSV Design Store in Turkey, from May until the end of November 2011. The “Destination: Istanbul”, a MoMAexclusive product collection will include home accessories, furniture, kitchenware, jewelry, and more by 41 designers from Istanbul. Items from the collection include olive wood serving utensils harvested
from the Aegean shores of Anatolia, porcelain espresso cups whose wavy silhouettes mimic those of whirling dervishes, and a traditional tea tray fashioned from contemporary materials such as steel and nylon. The Madison Hotel has Changed its Concept The Madison Hotel located in Taksim, Istanbul announced its concept change. The hotel, which operated as a family hotel, changed its concept according to the customer profile of hotels in Taksim area. The Madison Hotel General Manager Ali Imdat Uçar said that the hotel has undergone an extensive renovation and all hotel rooms are renovated according to the needs and comfort of businessmen. Working desk, broadband internet, Digitürk TV are added to the rooms. Bathrooms decorated with glass design and soft and relaxing colors are used at
rooms. A new menu is introduced at the new restaurant with winter garden. Ataturk’s Hotel is Renovated and Opened
Built in 1935 by the order of father of Turks; Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Bursa’s first fivestar hotel Çelik Palas has started welcoming its guests after one and a half years of renovation. General Manager of Hotel Çelik Palas; Birol Kaymas said that Hotel Çelik Palas has undergone US$55 million renovation and it has a total of 141 rooms; 120 of them are Premium and Superior rooms and 21 of them are suites. Located just next to the Hotel Çelik Palas; the small building used by Atatürk during his trips to the city, will be renamed as the Atatürk Palas after renovation that will be completed in May 2011. Atatürk Palas will be used as a mini hotel that will be operated with a special service concept; differentiating from the main hotel building. During the renovation, it is revealed that architect Guilio Mongeri used the ‘golden ratio’ at the columns of the building in 1930. The same method at these columns in Atatürk Palas is used by Frank Lloyd Wright’s S.C. Johnson & Son Administration Building that built during the same period. That method brought world’s most important architecture award to the building. Atatürk Palas will have a total of 23 rooms and 8 of them are suites. Mr. Kaymas said that mostly wealthy guests will prefer to stay at the Atatürk Palas by reserving all rooms. He noted that all

The events transformed these once isolated places into bloody memorials to valour and sacrifice and are etched into modern history. To Australians, the date of 25th April remains a symbol of nation building and heroism. 94 years on, the physical landscape has changed little. Identified as a significant place by both Turkish and foreign governments, the original beachheads at ANZAC Cove, Suvla Bay

A swelling interest in battlefield tourism has meant that these fragile, sacrosanct places have gained a growing focus. Joint discussions regarding the establishment of the Gallipoli Peace Park are symptomatic of the importance placed on the region by the countries involved in the conflict. Warfare has played a significant role in the history of the Dardanelles since the times of Alexander the Great and his conquest of the East. It

was across these same waters that the Allied troops landed under the watchful gaze of the Turkish defenders in 1915. The peninsula’s Mediterranean coast hides the remnants of war, the cultural remains of invading armies. Turkish fortifications near Cape Helles Known predominantly from the land campaign, the World War One Dardanelles Offensive began as a naval siege. Many vessels were lost in the ensuing actions and await scientific exploration. Dotted around the coast are significant historic shipwrecks - the
located British battleships Irrestisible, Ocean, Triumph, Goliath and Majestic, the French warship Bouvet, submarines E.7, E.14, E.15, and the Australian submarine AE2. The same waters hold other secrets. Perhaps the most poignant are to be found beneath the lapping waves of the beach landing sites. No archaeological examinations have ever been conducted offshore from ANZAC Cove or the other major staging sites. Transformed into complex facilities with jetties, groins and partial harbour works, the opportunity exists to document an untold aspect of the Gallipoli landings. The extent of cultural remains is largely unknown although observed timber piles, ammunition and those located shipwrecks is tantalising.

Our Australian expert team Headed by Mr Tim Smith, a respected professional Maritime Archaeologist, the expedition team has a proven history working in Turkey and in the scientific analysis of related Gallipoli war sites – particularly the Australian submarine AE2 (1915). Tim Smith is the Deputy Director of the Heritage Branch, NSW Department of Planning (State Government), and the NSW State Maritime Archaeologist. He is the Director – Maritime Archaeology of the independent AE2 Commemorative Foundation Ltd. (AE2CF) Silent Anzac project. This team has conducted the
archaeological survey and assessment of the Australian submarine AE2 wrecked near Gallipoli, supported by the Australian and Turkish Governments. The AE2 team last visited Turkey in April 2008 heading a technical management workshop at Istanbul, following the successful 2-week expedition to the submarine wreck in September 2007. Tim is a recognised expert in the mapping and management of underwater cultural heritage sites with over 18 years experience in international archaeological projects, working extensively in Australia, Jordan, Greece,

He is currently the Project Manager of the Japanese midget submarine wreck M24 (1942) located near Sydney, and NSW State Councilor and past Vice President and Secretary of the Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology Inc. (AIMA). Dr Mark Spencer is an internationally renowned underwater photographer and photo-journalist, specialising in historic shipwreck recording. It was Mark’s initiative that led to the assembling of an Australian team to work with the Turkish discoverers of the
Aims While the famous land defenses the trenches, posts and gullies are commonly known, it was the beachheads that provided the opportunity for access, supplies and finally evacuation, after eight months of horror. Project Beneath Gallipoli aims to document the surviving underwater cultural heritage surviving from the 1915 conflict. It seeks to examine each located feature and associated relics within the context of the wider
battlefield. The surveys will extend from the shoreline to 70 metres of water. The combined projects aim to run over a 10-day field survey with key targets: Target 1: The first professional underwater archaeological investigations conducted at ANZAC Cove, North Beach and Suvla Bay. Investigations will involve visual diving surveys of the near-shore terrain, the positioning of observed features and detailed graphical recording of structural remains. The wider offshore
area will be examined using sonar surveying technologies, and targets accurately located and displayed. Target 2: Documentation of historic shipwrecks associated with the beach heads. The initial targets will include HMS Triumph at ANZAC Cove and smaller near-shore wrecks of lighters and barges. The site will be accurately positioned and recorded through photography, video and remote sidescan sonar surveys.
The survey operations will seek to identify underwater features associated with the initial landings, consolidation phases, and evacuation. These features include the remains of timber jetties, stone landings and hulks purposely scuttled to serve as artificial breakwaters. Additional features are expected to include barges and lighters, ammunition, and rubbish dumps thought to lie beneath former naval ship mooring sites. All work will be non-disturbance in nature, follow international best practice, and adhere to the requirements of Turkish cultural heritage legislation,
Turkish Permit conditions, and the principles of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001). The loss of vessels such as H.M.S. Triumph and Majestic, was a major blow to morale for the allied troops watching from ashore. Key deepwater shipwreck sites will be proposed for inspection following assessment of their surviving integrity, depth, safety of access, and local environmental conditions. Approvals to investigate key sites will be sought from the State parties concerned.
Study Sites Project Beneath Gallipoli will examine the man-made remains surviving from the Dardanelles Campaign of 1915. Its principle focus is the underwater documentation of the main landing beaches near ANZAC Cove. The coastal strip of Anzac Cove, North Beach and Suvla Bay will be the principle targets for the archaeological team. Features will be accurately recorded through a comprehensive sidescan sonar survey of the seabed. Archaeological diving teams will visually examine and record detected targets within the survey area.

Outcomes Project Beneath Gallipoli is a unique concept in the investigation of Australia’s foreign battlefields sites and relics. It proposes the first systematic archaeological study of underwater remains associated with a First World War land-sea campaign site. The project has the potential to attract international interest with the results widely disseminated through a host of media - scholarly research publications, TV documentaries,
dedicated websites, general publications, magazines, exhibitions, interactive computerised displays, and tourism outlets. A major beneficiary will be school children through the dissemination of survey results via appropriate media. With potential to involve a range of specialists with international expertise, Project Beneath Gallipoli will further promote strong TurkishAustralian diplomatic and cultural relations.
The Project is in accordance with the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001). That Convention identifies ‘the public’s right to enjoy the educational and recreational benefits of responsible non-intrusive access to in situ underwater cultural heritage”, and acknowledges “the value of public education to contribute to awareness and protection of that heritage’.

The First World War Dardanelles Campaign has left a similar underwater footprint that beckons new discoveries, scientific documentation and interpretation. Project Beneath Gallipoli will contribute towards the public’s awareness of this important military campaign.
While the historic cemeteries, reconstructed trench lines and major topographical features on the peninsular are widely known, the adjacent underwater terrain remains relatively unexplored……….. The initial investigations centered on ANZAC Cove, North Beach and Suvla Bay will identify the range of archaeological material likely to be encountered in later phases of the project. It is anticipated that the underwater surveys will encounter significant cultural remains providing a unique opportunity for additional interpretation of major actions associated with the conflict. The project has the potential to be expanded to include the recording of additional related battlefield sites at Cape Helles and the broader shipwreck heritage of the Dardanelles Strait.
Significance Concepts The Project will: _ investigate the underwater terrain associated with the first major sea and land campaign in modern times at ANZAC Cove _ document cultural remains associated with the birth of the ANZAC legend, with the 100th anniversary in 2015 as a focal point _ promote past military endeavors and resourcefulness _ contribute to the importance of the Dardanelles Peninsula as a place of pilgrimage for both Turkish and Australian citizens _ Showcase Australian and Turkish cultural heritage management expertise at this internationally significant heritage site. “Edible Beads”
Gönül Paksoy, author of various original examples and projects in a wide field extending from food to clothing, from jewellery to accessories, has now united her knowledge and creativity in two different fields to present her book entitled “EDIBLE BEADS”. The book, to go on sale on May18, 2010, consists of Gönül Paksoy’s understanding of designs, showing how to interpret in universal dimensions that which has always been considered local both in Turkey and on international platforms. You will see in this book that many

foods, from sage to cinnamon, from onions to potatoes, from sour cherries to mushrooms, turn into jewellery. These designs, which alert and even awaken the established perception between “jewel” and “food” on the aesthetic plane, are considered today the most creative and merriest examples of modern designs, the limits of which keep getting wider and wider. The book includes Reyhan Ekşi’s photographs and Yılmaz Aysan’s book design, the anecdotal mythologic tales about each dish as it turns into a jewel,

as well as Gönül Paksoy’s unique recipes. The book entitled “Edible Beads” on foods turning into jewels on one hand and jewels into food on the other hand offers the reader both visual as well as recipes for unusual flavours. In her introduction to the book, Gönül Paksoy stresses the importance of “offering and sharing”, asking her readers to share the aesthetic as well as amusing designs with their loved ones, either wearing them or following the recipes for these dishes.
Gönül Paksoy research into natural dyes after Gönül Paksoy was born in the completion of her Ph. D. In Ceyhan, Adana. After primary the autumn of 1989, she left the school education in Ceyhan, she attended the Adana High School university. She continues her work on natural dyes, combining it for Girls. After graduating from Yıldız University, İstanbul, with a with design. She currently teaches at the Department of Textiles degree in Chemical Engineering, and Fashion Design of the Mimar she obtained a Master’s degree Sinan University School of Fine in “The Separation of Tar into its Components and its Arts, Istanbul. T
o be born with certain abilities, in other words, to be creative is to be lucky, is wealth. It makes you different. The appearance of creative thinking , noticing its existence and the resulting product is life itself, like an award for existing. We are certainly not talking about creation. Creation seems too presumptuous to me. Because we cannot create anything out of nothing. We add our knowledge and culture to that which exists, we reorganize the result and interpret it with the help of our imagination. The following question may come to mind. Does everybody have creativity? I personally believe that everybody has certain abilities. The contrary does not seem very equitable or fair to me. However, it is a fact that there are few people aware of their capabilities. We look and handle something under the

light of creativity or some sort of internal warning, we look or approach anything in a different manner. This is what I am trying to do here. I had prepared an exhibition entitled “Edible Beads” for an “International Conference on Beads”, organized in Istanbul three years ago with products that could be tasted on the spot by the participants. My aim here was to share this exhibition with a greater number of people by turning it into a book. I wanted to make our visitors smile, to draw their attention to the wealth of Turkey, to remind them of the cherry earings they wore in their childhood and contribute to their leaving Istanbul with pleasant memories. And thus it was. Everybody was in the best of spirits. I looked for a different approach, a different interpretation of the products

used daily in our kitchen. We can consider those beads we feel the taste and smell the aroma of as “edible beads”. I used most of them in their natural state. I have chosen to use some others drying or cooking them, that is adding small touches. As I said, a small touch! I reinterpreted them without breaking or hurting them. We know that research has been conducted on the feelings and emotions of plants and I would not wish to hurt their feelings. I limited the number of products I used for the book. These are the ones I chose and commented on. But you can increase the number of subjects at will. I did not select only those I like. I used those I could not include in the list of beads in my culinary designs. First I must say that this book is about food, but is not a cook book. It is a different presentation of the beauty of the kitchen. It is sometimes a book of of
tales or legends, sometimes a small recollection or a teasing comment, and sometimes book of designs containing a question directed to all of us. As in everything I do, I am only trying to share what is beautiful to me. Sometimes it is sharing the apple in my garden, sometimes the berberis in the past, the myrtle or the phissallys at some other time, or better, sharing all of them and more. Only flowers more beautiful than Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, can compete with her. I think that not only flowers, but also their fruit should take part in this competition. As to us, as we cannot partake in this race, would it not be more clever of us to enrich ourselves with them? As a matter of fact,that is what we do. I included them in this book as edible beads. But if you stop to think about this, especially writers and poets in Turkish literature have written so much to immortalize them. Most writers have often used them in their description of the loved one. For some of them, the beloved has almond shaped
eyes, for others it is olives that are used to describe their beauty. For almost all writers and poets, the loved ones have c heeks like apples, lips like cherries, skin like peaches, a body like a tall and slender cypress. For others, they resemble a mulberry. Olives are certainly comparable only to the eyes of the beloved. For Lorca, it is Andalusia he misses so much or the symbol of poverty. For NazĹm, it is the symbol of clinging to life or the subject of one of Van Gogh’s pictures. According to AndrÊ Gide figs have secret loves. It is said that Leonardo made statues of vegetables and fruit he found in the kitchen. What can be more natural than his interpretations? Some artists immortalized them, some others used them as subjects of mythology or bases of legends, but all were much loved. Even if their flowers could not establish themselves in the hearts of people, they became unforgetable through their fruit. As a matter of fact, what is important is neither the ingredients we use, nor the complicated flavours or the special dishes we make with them. What is important is to be able to offer, to share. It is only when beauty is shared that it remains inside us as unforgettable memories. Sometimes going deeper into ordinary lives you are told about may give you extraordinary pleasure. These may remain as unforgettable joys. They may even open the door to our most precious personal memories. In a sense, this can be considered rewarding the person and persons we are sharing with. Of course, it would be an injustice to ignore the tastes of the edible beads I steal from the kitchen and use. That is why the second part of the book includes the dishes I design or interpret with some of these beads.

One part of these, I leave to you. You may one day share with me the tastes you will devise.What we must not forget is that we must create another beauty, another taste in every flavour and texture. If you say that is difficult, offer every edible bead you like with love. You may be able to develop a new flavour . Either wear a laurel crown on your head or wear a pair of cherry ear rings. By the way, did you ever put on cherry earrings....

Meet at Istanbul
The Flower City of Tulips By:Sevil Oren
Who had the magic stick that turned Istanbul into a Flower City? I was curiously wondering to meet the leader and the team that was making the citizens of Istanbul so happy every spring for the past five years. The Tulips, the Judas trees, the spring and summer flowers of all kinds that were planted and looked after meticulously made Istanbul smile again somehow after so much negligence. When Istanbul is happy so are the citizens with growing energy from their environmental experience of the Tulip and flower decorated side roads, parks, hills with Judas trees. I make a point of not traveling overseas during April/May so that I wont miss the Judas tree and Tulips of Istanbul. To see the city changing color each day is so exciting , it is called “Catch the Day”. We, therefore, can catch the Day recently in Istanbul thanks to the Parks and Gardens Directorate of the Greater Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul. S.Ö.: Is there a flower or a tree that represents Turkey? İ.Ş.: There are definitely flowers and trees that represent our country. But most accurate information about them could be obtained from the Ministry of Forestry. I can tell you about Istanbul; The Tulip. Tulip was also the symbol of Istanbul in the past and gave its name to an era during Ottoman Empire. If we mention tree as a symbol, it is possible to say Judas tree is also the symbol of Istanbul. If we mention other flowers apart from tulips we can count carnations, lilacs and hyacinth. As for the trees we can count Plane Tree, Linden Tree, Celtis Tree, Acer Tree and Maple Tree. S.Ö.: What do you think about adding a “From Seed to Tree” lecture to elementary curriculum to increase society’s knowledge of plants, trees and to raise awareness for the protection of greenery? What would be the benefits of such lecture? İ.Ş.: Agriculture course were junior high in the past. Though, I did not see it. Do we have now? I do not know. According to the previous generation it was especially designed for the rural area applications. For example, tree planting, seedling raising, recognition of the leaves of trees, grain production, etc. I am supporting the idea of adding such a course to the elementary classes. Today’s children are tomorrow’s managers. It s important that the children should be in harmony with the environment and nature. S.Ö.: Is it possible to increase the number of parks and gardens that are used by children and adults? İ.Ş.: The purpose of the establishment of the Directorate of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Parks and Gardens in Istanbul is to increase parking and garden areas; to make a greener Istanbul. To fulfill such a purpose we are in an intense pace of work. When I started my work as Director of Parks and Gardens in Istanbul in 2004, the total amount of active green areas was 30,109.933 m². at the end of the 2011 the total amount of active green area is increased to 48,394.876 m². At the end of the 6th year the total area is increased to %60. The area of the distinct municipalities is not counted in this number. If you ask “is that number enough for Istanbul?” our answer is simple; “NO”. Our main purpose is to increase the personal green area of Istanbul to EU standard value 10 m2. Istanbul also has forest areas that we call “ passive green areas”. Public cannot use such areas. In the past years we made some protocols with the Ministry of Forestry to open these passive green areas to the usage of the public. We called them “Urban Forest”. Examples of such are; Küçükçekmece Şamlar Urban Forest, Ümraniye Hekimbaşı Urban Forest and Şile Balı bey Urban forest.. We establish walking trails, picnic areas, cafe and dining areas, terraces, and fitness equipment for adults, playgrounds for the children in these urban forests. I can tell you that, with these urban forests our fellow Istanbul citizens can relax at weekends with their families. S.Ö.: Does Department of Parks and Gardens help private parks and gardens in the subjects of pruning and spraying? Does the directorate supervise the private gardens? İ.Ş.: In any demand, Greater Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul, Department of Parks and Gardens Directorate apply pruning and spraying to private gardens for a small fee (this fee is decided by the Assembly of The Metropolitan Municipality). In addition to this Istanbul Directorate of Parks and Gardens interfere and stop any action to reduce green areas, according to the Act and Regulations that are given by the Metropolitan Municipality to us. Therefore, we give assistance to private gardens when a public authority is needed for them.
S.Ö.: If people of Istanbul demanded education about the plants and trees, can the Parks and Gardens Directorate prepare and give such an education? İ.Ş:GMMI.(IBB) Directorate of Parks and Gardens organizes specific courses of horticulture from time to time. This horticultural trainings given by the experts, take place on the Haliç Station Office for European Side, on Idealtepe Urban Forest for Anatolian Side. Citizens who complete this course in horticulture is given certificates at the Education Directorate of the Municipality. After completing this course, some of the fellow graduates is employed by the subject related companies. The interest for the course is rapidly increasing. Apart from the unskilled, unoccupied citizens, nearly all kind of people attend these courses for entertainment and hobby purposes. In addition to these, to increase the interest to green in Istanbul, the Tulip Festival takes place every year. During this festival, tulips that was grown in pots are given to our citizens, for free. Besides,there is the competition held in previous years about the most beautiful tulip that was planted. S.Ö.: Are parks and gardens located in the city being used as intended? Taksim Gezi Park is being used as a demonstration area for some time. What is your opinion on this? İ.Ş.: Parks and Gardens, in more short term all green areas built for the citizens of Istanbul. City parks and gardens are like its lungs. When the house- wives get bored or working people tired of their jobs they escape directly to our parks, to green areas. These areas supply every interest or need of these citizens. From fitness equipment to playgrounds, from bicycle trails to running sides…For every age and every kind of people can enjoy them at these areas. As for the situation in Taksim Gezi Park, this area is located in the heart of Istanbul. As the name implies, this is a tour area. It’s natural that, variety of exhibitions and demonstrations take place on such areas. This is the same in the Europe. People are finding the opportunity to see demonstrations free of charge thanks to these areas. We are especially building open theaters to new parks (if the area is suitable) to give a chance to street performers. It is possible to see examples at Caddebostan and Florya-Yesilkoy coast. S.Ö.: There is a exhibition area that is owned by the Metropolitan Municipality that is a bit out of service at Taksim. Is it possible for Parks and Gardens Directorate to use this area for publicity and education purposes ? İ.Ş.: As you mentioned in your question, there is a exhibition center that is owned by the Municipality at the Cumhuriyet Street side of the Taksim Gezi Park. This hall is home to various exhibitions. Mayoralty is the authority that can decide a function change in the exhibition hall. As for our directorate, any exhibition that is planned by us, is planed in our urban forests. For example, Emirgan Grove has a Tulip Museum building project. All information and images related to the tulip will be available in this museum. Also in Istanbul at the Ataturk Forest in Florya, we are planning to build a botanic park that will be worthy of Istanbul. We want to finish these projects in the coming years, according to budgetary means. Especially Botanic Park Project will supply the lack of knowledge on this matter. fter my participation in the EMITT 2011, I headed to Safranbolu, in Karabuk Province. This was my second visit in the city, and I have to say that people from the Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs have improved public services and the infrastructure. For example, there are new signs accross the city center and neighboorhoods wooden-made – obviously, in a land as it was, surrounded by hills and valleys! These fully coloured plackards sign maps and indications of how to reach the turistic points of interest. They have also
three new city-cars used by the Municipality to their guests, very colorful and charming, patterned with illustrations of their houses ! Quıte funny! People from the Municipality is committed with the preparations of the furthercoming INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN SAFRON DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL, in its 12th edition, which will take place in September, from 16th to 18th. And the very good news ıs that this time they are dealing with European Documentary and Amatorial Film Festivals in order to exchange coverage and promotion of the event with Film Journalists. For
ınfo and contacts: www.safranbolu.bel.tr . I was positively surprised by the fact that one of the ancient Ottoman houses in the historical city center , has just been fully restored. Safranbolu Houses exist and survive for more than 200 of years, in a process that continues to live in this Turkish city of culture. These houses are today the most important building group in Ottoman architectural style worldwide. Across the district there are about 2000 traditional Turkish houses, which were built in 18th,.19th an early 20th century. About 800 of these masterpieces are under legal protection.

Meet in Safranbolu The Otthoman houses were basically constructed in a way to be divided into two distinct bodies: the first to be used by the family for storage and stalls, on the ground floor; the second one used.on daily life. Likewise, the landlords of Safranbolu used to have two different houses into and outside the district . They spent the months of Winter – windly but not extreme - in the Konak (“Mansion”). In Summertime the family used to move to settle for 4 or 5 months in the other house – called Baglar - different to each other basically for the kind of wood used on their construction, and in the areas devoted to open-air activities. Safranbolu city takes its name from Saffron flower ( Zaafaran): the most expensive aromathic plant on earth. This plant is still being cultivated in the surroundings of the District. Seen the gastronomic value and appeal of the Saffron, it deserves a new article completely dedicated to its wonders !

During my visit to Safranbolu, I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in a charming Boutique Hotel, the onlyest in the city and surroundings. Let me tell you about “Imren Lokum Konak”. İt is an old Ottoman house belonging to a traditional family from Safranbolu District. After being restored by heirs of this family, headed by Hidayet Sezer – founder and owner of a traditional Confectioner of Lokum - the so-called “Turkish Delight” – this historical residence with its unique style was oppened to visitors in 2009. Just upon your arrival, they welcome you offering a tray of their “Imren Lokum”, in their multiple shapes

and fillings (also with saffran flavor, needless to say) – served together with the typical small glasses of çay, during your check-in. İ may assure you that its wooden ceilings, windows and balustrades, floors, cupboards, doors and roof - which are “key” in Ottoman Architectural style – are very well conserved after more than 200 years. The whole residence is adorned with woodworkings particular to Safranbolu. You will feel the scent of the Yellow Pine, the Fir and the Walnut. By the way, the restaurant opens to the inner garden, and a fireplace matchs with a small fountain carved from a single piece of stone..
And the Manager – Mr. Mehmet çetin - was proud to show me all the photos of his ancestors, wich covers the walls of the corridors, enlighted with kerosene lamps. They also have a collection of historical items that bellonged to their families. Each of their 18 room is delicatedly decorated with high-quality Turkish cotton linen. and tapestry-lined pillows. Not to mention the handmade embroideries which made me feel crazy for them ! So charming ! Good-tasted guys and Fashion-addict ladies would love for having some of this stuff in their own homes! Imren Konak Boutique Hotel deserves more time of our attention, and not only a couple of paragraphs ! Meet the President of IFTA
How did you get acquainted with IFTA?
O
ne day, my good friend Sevil Oren told me that she had recently met in Australia a family therapist from Norway, Wencke Seltzer, who was then the president of IFTA. The two of them had made an enthusiastic acquaintance. Sevil, inspired by Wencke, asked me if I would pull our local professionals together for a conference in Turkey, which I was happy to do. A family therapy association had already existed and it seemed like a good idea to build on the foundation it had laid. We invited Wencke to discuss ways of raising family therapy awareness here and a year later invited her successor Chana Winer to meet with the Turkish Family Therapy Association representatives and the conference organizers . The result was a wonderful IFTA world conference in Istanbul in 2004. Following that, I did
my best to propagate family therapy here by giving a number of workshops to psychologists, psychiatrists and related professionals in different parts of Turkey and over several years sponsored a series of family therapy seminars given by Dr. William Hiebert, director of Marriage and Family Counseling Services of Rock Island, Illinois. Since the Istanbul IFTA conference, I’ve been an active member of the organization, serving as a board member, prior to being chosen to carry the responsibility of the presidency.
What are your Aims and targets during your IFTA presidency? “ I think IFTA and family therapy have crucial social importance, as we see more and more emotional damage from family breakups all over the world.” Ms. Reid

The cement that will hold our lives together is the family and the values that it can create .” “My main targets for the two years of my IFTA presidency are two,” she says. “First, to widen IFTA’s membership so that it includes at least as many therapists from developing countries as there are from Europe, North America, and Japan. Second, to raise the organization’s profile and its impact through clearly visible projects—research, survey, and other efforts that will make family solidarity a public issue.”
Istanbul psychologist and civic leader Fatma (Ramazanoglu)Torun Reid has been elected president of the International Family Therapy Association. She received the association’s gavel of leadership at its annual congress in Holland last month, and will serve a two-year presidential term beginning in July after having completed her two-year term as president-elect. In addition to her IFTA role, Ms.Reid is the founding president of the Turkish Transactional Analysis Association. She is a long-time member of the International Transactional Analysis Association and organized its 2006 international congress in Istanbul. She has worked as a UNICEF consultant in Middle East and in New York. Ms. Reid’s core work since the 1970’s has been in therapy with individuals, couples, and children at the ASAM Child and Family Development Center in Caddebostan, Istanbul, which she founded in 1979. She has written frequently in local publications to generate awareness of the challenges of parenthood and preventive health. She has written two books for the general reader,published by Remzi kitabevi, “Unutkan Erkekler/Hadileyen Anneler” (Pushy Mothers and Procrastinating Men) and “Hep Sevgili Kalalım” (Sweethearts for Life: An Analysis of Long-term Relationships.) She is sought frequently as a speaker and expert commentator at schools, seminars, and television talk programs. After finishing her secondary education at the American Academy for Girls in Uskudar, Ms. Reid received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in psychology and philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, winning the Outstanding International Student award there. Not long after her return to Turkey, based on the work she had initiated in student counseling, she was invited on a “Young Leaders and Specialists” grant by the U.S. State Department, to do a study tour of the Counseling Centers of prominent universities in the United States. She did further study and post-graduate certificate work in psychology at the Tavistock Center in London and Fordham University Graduate School of Social Studies in New York.
