Conserving and Linking Cultures A nation with a confident view of the future is the one that looks closer and deeper into the changing world, in other words feels the “heartbeat” of other nations. The beauty of tourism is that it works its way into the hearts of people through the desire to visit other cultures and learn about their customs. The theme for the World Tourism Day to be celebrated by the whole tourism world on the 27th September is “Linking Cultures”. This day is “earmarked” by the United Nations to celebrate tourism and its social, economic and environmental benefits. The world is connecting through “Conserving Cultures” by doing the right things, the right way. Different cultures are coming closer and holding hands by heritage conservation. The whole world cares and yearns to save and preserve and conserve their own culture and help other nations to save theirs too. Travel and Tourism are coming closer by cultural visits more and more in our fast changing world. To visit a Biennial, to learn about an ancient neglected castle that is coming back to life, the Yoros, to visit museums,to feel the city by seeing, hearing and tasting are the main reasons for todays travel incentive. Our cover story is the Yoros Castle, now coming alive by the works of a valuable team led by Prof. Dr.Asnu Bilban Yalcin of the Istanbul University, Byzantium Art History section. I have visited the site and was more than impressed, therefore, we have this very new information on the site works as it will highlight our cultural roots from the Romans to Byzantium and Ottomans. This conservation will be linking cultures of the past with the present. Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has been the pride and joy of Istanbullians for a long time, carrying itself to the international culture and art world successfully. Now, the “Flying Success” Turkish Airlines will be sponsoring IKSV for three years. Fly to Culture with THY will bring further confidance to IKSV. The theme of the 12th Biennial is “Untitled” and the visitors should find their own titles after their visit of the Biennial and Istanbul. Meet and Drink shows that the Turkish Wines are there to compete with the world. We will have more on wine in our November issue after visiting the main wine areas. Our home is our nation and visitors are our valuable guests that should be taken care of by good food, tasty wine, inviting, meeting, entertaining museums, archeological sites, cultures linking past and present.

Istanbul Soon to Have a Museum Island

Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Kadir Topbaş, Governor of Istanbul Hüseyin Avni Mutlu, and Adalar (Islands) District Mayor Mustafa Farsakoglu took one-day tour to Yassiada and Sivriada together with the press. Yassıada and Sivriada are ones of the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara. The islands are officially a neighbourhood in the Adalar district of Istanbul, Turkey. Mr. Gunay said that Yassiada would become a museum island. “We will build a museum of democracy here. However, it will not just be a museum, but a place for cultural activities as well. We expect it will also have accommodation facilities, a showroom and auditoriums,” said Gunay. Mr.Gunay and the accompanying delegation visited sports hall which was turned into a court hall after May 27 (1960) military coup. Mr.Gunay said representatives of an elected political ruling, including the president and the prime minister, were here in the court hall after May 27 military coup. “All the representatives of the Democracy Party government were kept under arrest in this island after May 27 military coup and were judged in an extraordinary court there. The most merciless judges convened and hearings which ashamed legal and

The cells where Menderes, Celal Bayar and other statesmen stayed in will be included in the museum and their belongings will be on show. The 1960 military coup toppled the Democrat Party (DP) government led by Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. On May 27, 1960, the military overthrew the democratically elected Menderes government and the military junta took control of the administration alleging that the state’s secular character was at risk. According to officers who staged the coup, it was aimed at putting an end to activities against secularism in the country. However, it is widely believed the coup was carried out to restore the administration to its original state, where power was shared only among the elite of the country.

The Istanbul Design Biennial will explore a wide range of fields, from urban to architecture, interior, industrial, graphic, fashion, textile and new media design. The first Istanbul Design Biennial has adopted this theme at the suggestion of Mr. Deyan Sudjic, a member of its advisory board who is the Director of the Design Museum in London. “Imperfection is the theme of the first Istanbul Design Biennial, and there is nowhere better to explore it than in Istanbul, a city of infinite layers, charged with the vitality that comes from engaging with rapid urban, social and cultural change. As a theme, “Imperfection” will both celebrate Istanbul’s distinctive creative qualities and encapsulate a wider discussion about the nature of design in the contemporary world. It will tell the world something about Istanbul and offer the world a sharp insight into the nature of contemporary design. Imperfection is a new take on old ideas. An open call for designers who are interested in taking part will be made in October 2011. The Istanbul Design Biennial is an initiative of the Istanbul foundation for Culture and the Arts. TEAMCON Achieves a First! URSI 2011 Brings the World to Istanbul 30th General Meeting and Scientific Symposium of URSI (the International Union of Radio Science) is taking place in Istanbul. It is being held in the Lutfi Kirdar Congress Centre from 13-20 August 2011, organised by TEAMCON. Teamcon has welcomed around 1500 delegates from 57 countries to Istanbul despite the current international economic problems, the political difficulties of countries bordering Turkey and also the fact that it is the hottest period of the holiday season. URSI representatives are putting the fact that 8 countries are taking part for the first time down to Teamcon’s success. Alongside the scientific content of the congress, Istanbul’s appeal as a destination has not only increased the number of delegates but has also had a positive effect on those taking part. It had a positive effect on the number of people taking part in the courses and education programme which were held before the congress, as well as on the sessions which have been held in 11 conference rooms of the Lutfi Kirdar Congress Centre. The positive working relationship between URSI’s Turkish International Committee and Teamcon has contributed to the success and quality of the congress. With the support of URSI’s head office in Belgium, Teamcon has been able to organise a very successful congress. The fact that the number of delegates and delegate countries has increased, and that the interest shown by students and young people involved in science has increased compared to previous years, are testament to this success. Teamcon is a corporate body, which was founded in 2003 by bringing together 5 of the leading tourism establishments and is the only one of its kind in Turkey. In terms of promotion it plays an important role in the Turkey national economy and allows the congress sector to compete on equal terms as an industry with other developed countries. It brings together careful planning, detailed organisation, team work, implementation of new technology and financial strength. As Teamcon, with the combined strength and experience of the companies, the goals are to achieve 100% success and, by working with decision-makers, to bring internationally known congresses to Turkey. Some of our most important references are: 2005 – the organisation of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Universiade which took place in Izmir 2009 – 5th International Physical ?? And Rehabilitation Congress 2011 – the organisation of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Universiade which took place in Erzurum.

Salih Cene is a candidate for the post of Skal World Director This year Skal International (SI) Annual Congress will be held in Turku/ Finland from 18th to 23rd of September. Immediate past Councilor for Turkey and a senior tourism professional Salih Cene is a candidate for the post of Director of SI. This year he left the Council in accordance with the Council Operations Manual stating that “Councilors may serve in the Council for maximum of six years” and is nominated by his Club … With his experience and vision he stands a very good chance for the elections. SI Turkey is strongly supporting him and they adopted the following slogan; “With his experience and vision, Salih is the best match for this mission” Some reflections from Salih’s vision of Skal are as follows; ● In order to take our place as a trusted advisory body, Skal’s status should be

well explained to the world of tourism. The most important asset that differentiates Skal International from other organizations is its membership mosaic. Not only its presence in five continents and over 90 countries, but also its wide range of membership categories that no other tourism organization has under one roof (tour operators, hoteliers, airline representatives, guides, tourism press and many more). This wide representation should make Skal a trusted voice within World Tourism, especially in two areas. Skal could use this position to set: ● The “Code of Ethics” in the Travel & Tourism Industry. ● The principles of business between various sectors of the Travel & Tourism Industry (eg. standards for contracts and operational rules between Travel Trade, Hotels, Airlines, etc.) ● By achieving these two missions, Skal may also become the arbitrator in national and international disputes in the Travel & Tourism Trade. The tourism sector in Turkey, agree that Salih deserved long before to be one of the Directors of Skal International. ●

Turkey launched high-speed train between Ankara and Konya Turkey launched last week a new highspeed train rail that links the Turkish capital, Ankara, and the central city of Konya. The new line was inaugurated in a ceremony in Konya hosting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan,

Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim and Development Minister Cevdet Yilmaz. Speaking at the ceremony, Erdogan said the construction of the 212-kilometer high-speed railway and the test runs had taken only four and a half years to complete, which he said was significantly shorter than most of such projects elsewhere in the world, citing a 204-km line between Italy ’s Rome and Naples that has taken 11 years and another 216-km line between Germany ’s Hanover and Berlin which has taken 7 years. Erdogan said the high-speed train would reduce travel time between the two cities to one and a half hour from ten and a half hours in the past when the old train services from Konya reached Ankara only after stopping at the central cities of first Eskisehir and then Afyon.

TTG Incontri is the most important b2b international trade fair in the tourism sector in Italy. It takes place every year at Rimini Fiera: it will be held for the 48th time in 2011. The three-day event is used to present the main new features of tourism operators to the market: 42.750 visitors were present in 2010 with more than one thousand direct exhibitors and a total of 2.400 companies represented from 100 countries. TTG Incontri was held for the first time in Milan in 1977. For more than 15 years the event took place twice a year in (spring-autumn) and also abroad ( Eastern Europe ). After changing location for a number of years, the workshop reached Riva del Garda in 1993 and stayed there for 9 years. In 2003 TTG Italia decided to move the event to the modern Rimini Fiera trade fair district, designed by Studio GMP in Hamburg and opened in 2001. The district is located in the north of the city of Rimini and covers a total area of 460,000 square metres. It

consists of 16 large single-storey pavilions which are modern and functional and the complex has its own railway station on the Milan-Bari line. The new venue is in keeping with the essential characteristics for organising TTG Incontri/TTI to guarantee the success of the event: functional trade fair area, efficient services in the region, pleasant relaxing environment. To stimulate in-depth analysis and outline future scenarios in the tourism industry with top-level meetings, TTG Italia launched the TTG Forums in 2003, top-level meetings with important national and international speakers. TTG Italia, the company which organises TTG Incontri, is the Italian leader in communications and services in the tourism sector. It promotes meetings between supply and demand on different levels and in different environments and operates exclusively on a business-to-business basis, through supplying the market with publications, trade fairs, one-to-one contacts and new opportunities for growth and development. The head office is in Turin, while the Events Department, which organises TTG Incontri and TTI, is based in Milan . TTG Italia spa is a member company of Gruppo Rimini Fiera and an associate member of UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation). n

ituated on the hills of Beykoz Anadolu Kavagi, the Yoros Castle archeological works is bringing a new vision to the culture and tourism perspective of Istanbul. Led by the Istanbul University Art History section member Prof.Dr.Asnu Bilban Yalcin, the art historians, archeologs, restoraters and architects totalling 20 people have been working on the site for the past

two years resulting in finding objects from the Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman period. The Yoros Castle is the only remaining middle-age period castle. The Roman Byzantium, Ottoman period commercial, military, naval traffic control was done from this castle. The exact period of the establishment of the Yoros Castle is not known.

The castle was built on top of an old bulding and the material of the old one has been used in building the new castle. The castle that has been the symbol of power all through the middle-age period was also used as the customs point. On the 14th century it was captured by the Genovese, than the Ottomans during the Sultan Yildirim Bayezit period. That is why it September’2011

is called, wrongly, the Genovese Castle by the locals. According to the Turkish and western travellers stories, until the end of the 18th century, the castle had baths, mosque and a little village where the military officials families resided. Whereas, during the Ottoman period it was used as a military base.

During the Antique Period, the hill where the castle located was called Zeus Hieron and was considered a holy place. The historian Petrus Gyllius, informs that one of the most important temples of the antique period “Positive Winds God” temple Zeus

Orion and another temple dedicated to the the 12 Greek Goods, together with Artemis and Poseidon( the Sea God) was to be found here too. Above the temples there was a circle shaped wall and inside this wall was a castle. At the skirts of the castle, a port where 300 ships could anchor was located.

The Prayer of the Argonots “Doors of the Sea” was the location named where the temples were built due to its positioning at the far end of the Bosphorus opening to the Black Sea and the castle and the port at its skirts were the stopping places of the commercial ships and sailors that traded with the Greek colonies between the Aegean and the Medditteranean. According to the historical documentation, this location was among one of the busiest places. The sailors prayed to Zeus and other gods for positive winds before continuing their route. The Argonauts, the Greek heroes under the

leadeship of Iason prayed here on their way to Georgia(Kolhida of that period) with their fast ships called the “Argo” to capture the Golden Post that was the symbol of power and wealth. The Persian King Darius on his way to Greece, proudly watched the passing of the Persian ships, full of soldiers, from the Bosphorous, sitting at the castle. Yoros Castle created various disputes between the Byzantium and Khalkedon as it was obvious that whoever owned the Castle could control the naval traffic and the sea routes. The Khalkedonians argued that this was their rightful heritage, however,as they were more

powerful due to the number of the ships and controlled the sea traffic, the Byzantions bought the castle and the temple as they did not want to loose the Black Sea traffic. On the 6th century Emperor Justinianus missioned a Count to collect taxes from the psssing ships. The Yoros Castle archeological works, is very valuable for the historical and cultural discovery, protection and forwarding to the coming generations and contributing to growing numbers of tourist coming to Beykoz and Istanbul and giving them an incentive ti stay longer at Istanbul as a destination.

The archeologist working at the site researced and found the presence of another Byzantium Castle right opposite Yoros Castle (Rumeli Kavak). It is thought that a chain similar to the ones that were placed during The Congueror Sultan Mehmet(Fatih Sultan Mehmet) is between these two castles. Following the Ottoman period, the castle had

been left to its destiny for long long years, serving as the picnic area of the visitors. This neglected location was almost ruined by the visitors by left waste, fires for barbecue and even a nightmare place for the homeless for their unlawful deeds. sitane Restaurant is located in Edirnekapı, considered by many to be one of the most important areas of historical Istanbul. The neighborhood is a typical quiet Turkish “mahalle” within a short walking distance to important Byzantian monuments. The restaurant itself lies in the shadow of the mighty Chora Church which is famous for its mosaics and is one of the most important and well kept buildings of the Byzantine era. Located high up in the foot hills overlooking the Golden Horn, Asitane opened its doors in 1991, together with the Kariye Hotel, a restored 19th century traditional Ottoman mansion. The restaurant, whose dishes reflect the eclectic nature of the TurcoOttoman neighbourhood, was named Asitane, one of the many names given to Istanbul throughout the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Extensive research was undertaken six months prior to the opening of the restaurant as kitchen registries deep from the archives of Topkapı and Dolmabahçe Palaces were scoured for recipes, and relevant documentation was found in Istanbul’s Beyazıt and Millet libraries. Additional important sources of information for the duration of the preparation period were dug up using old Ottoman dictionaries, the written historic accounts of various statesmen, medical practitioners and soldiers. After 20 years in hospitality, Asitane now boasts an impressive archive comprised of over 450 forgotten sweet and savory recipes, which are prepared in keeping with the cooking methods of 500 years ago. The current menu features dishes originally prepared for the sumptuous celebration feast given for Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent’s two sons, Bayezid II and Şah Cihangir, at Edirne Palace in November 1539 as well as classic dishes of Turkish cuisine. The restaurant periodically offers themed menus such as “The Age of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror”, “Ottoman Aphrodisiacs”, “Fish and Seafood Ottoman Style” as part of its mission to introduce the tastes of a bygone era to all. Asitane also offers a large selection of fine Turkish wines to accompany this historic feast. Asitane is open everyday from 11:45 am till 11:30 pm, serving indoors during winters, and at it’s beatiful garden in summers. Additionally the restaurant caters to special events and functions.

IMEX in Frankfurt, over 830 international hosted buyers were surveyed after the show to gain valuable insight into their thoughts on social media, industry blogs and new technologies. The findings of the 2011 IMEX in Frankfurt Hosted Buyer Social Media Survey (taken from the post-show exit survey) suggest that the uptake of social media for professional use has accelerated significantly compared to last year. Among the respondents, Facebook has risen in popularity with 71 per cent of hosted buyers now using it either for networking or business promotion purposes, rising from 60 per cent in 2010. Twitter is another social media platform that has increased in

34

IMEX - Frankfurt popularity, with 41 per cent of respondents now using it regularly, compared to 27 per cent in 2010. Not surprisingly given its professional authority, LinkedIn is used by 69 per cent of the buyers surveyed, whilst YouTube is used by 25 per cent, demonstrating its growing role as a credible and viable channel for corporate marketing and communications within the international meetings industry. Despite the proliferation and increasing influence of blogs within the international meetings industry, surprisingly, the number of respondents who say they do not regularly read one has increased slightly on 2010 - from 83 per cent to 86 per cent this year. Given the clear rise and popularity of short, sharp opportunities to grab and share information on social media, it’s possible that longer blog formats are proving more challenging for meetings industry professionals to squeeze into a busy

working day. Amongst other findings, the survey quizzed buyers on their use of the IMEX App, a brand new introduction for 2011 (which was developed by MPI and QuickMobile, and sponsored by Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau). Of the 838 buyers who responded, 61 per cent revealed they were aware of it, and of those who downloaded the new IMEX App, 80 per cent were iPhone users. In terms of hosted buyer awareness of the various different App features, 91 per cent were most aware of the ‘Tell a Friend’ section although the ‘My Schedule’ feature was the most frequently used. When it came to the App features deemed most useful, the top three were ‘My Schedule’, the ‘Floorplan’ and the ‘Venue’ features respectively.

Meet at Biennial

Countdown for the 12th Istanbul Biennial

T

he 12th Istanbul Biennial, organized by IKSV with the sponsorship of Koç Holding, opens September 17 and continues through November 13. The 12th Istanbul Biennial, ranked among the most important art events in Europe along with the Venice Biennial, will turn Istanbul once again into an art platform being watched with interest by the world art communities starting in the month of September. The title of this edition is Untitled (12th Istanbul Biennial), 2011. The title, the visual identity, and the themes of the biennial reference the work of the Cuban American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres, one of the most

36

September’2011

important artists of the contemporary era. During his life Gonzalez-Torres exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions internationally, including the 5th Istanbul Biennial, curated by Rosa Martínez. Gonzalez-Torres’s minimalist and conceptual artistic language is both formally innovative and explicitly political, and was a source of inspiration for the researches conducted for the 12th Istanbul Biennial. The 12th Istanbul Biennial aims at drawing attention to the importance of the exhibition, the primary format of artistic and curatorial expression, in response to the mentality today

MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine

favouring ancillary events and programming, especially in a biennial context. It will be precisely installed in a single, carefully constructed space, Antrepo, in a manner that privileges the display and juxtaposition of the artworks. To remain in line with Gonzalez-Torres’s idea of “Untitled” and his desire to circumvent established artistic and political conventions, the names of the artists will remain undisclosed until the biennial’s opening. A critical position toward preconceived notions of the exhibition is a fundamental part of the curatorial premise, particularly with respect to a possible consumption of

the exhibition via a list of the artists, the names of the curators, or the title of the show. The 12th Istanbul Biennial will also host many important names in global contemporary art. Nearly 4,000 guests, including artists, critics, curators, and museum and gallery managers from international art communities as well as international press members will be in Istanbul during the opening week to see the Istanbul Biennial. Koç Holding continues its 10-year Biennial Sponsorship, having started in 2007 and including five biennials with the 12th Istanbul Biennial. Koç Holding will assume the sponsorship of three more Istanbul Biennials to be realized until 2016. The venues of the 12th Istanbul Biennial will open to art lovers on Saturday, September 17, and they

will be Antrepo 3 and 5 in the area belonging to Istanbul Maritime Lines in Tophane. The architectural design of the biennial venues has been realized by the Architectural Design Office of Ryue Nishizawa. The inside of Antrepo 3 and 5 is being transformed into an impressive exhibition area with steel and drywall constructions. Nishizawa is also working on a method that will enable the audience to perceive the group and solo exhibitions separately. Nishizawa, although still in his 40s, is acknowledged as one of the most important architects in the world today. He founded SANAA (Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates) in 1995 with the architect Kazuyo Sejima. He has maintained the Office of Ryue Nishizawa since 1997. SANAA has won the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Golden Lion Award of the Venice Architecture Biennial. The firm’s projects have included the New Museum of Contemporary Art (2007) in New York, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (2004) in Kanazawa, Japan, and boutiques of Christian Dior and Prada in Japan. IKSV and Pace Art Center will realize education programs for children within the context of the Istanbul Biennial, under the sponsorship of Koç Holding. The education programs are organized with the aim of developing enthusiasm for museum and exhibition culture among children between the ages of 6 and 14, and to introduce them to basic art concepts and contemporary art. The programs will continue for the entire duration of the Istanbul Biennial. As part of the education project to be realized with the sponsorship of Koç Holding, 200 art teachers will receive education about the biennial and contemporary art. With this project IKSV and Koç Holding aim to increase artistic interest and knowledge among the young generation. The ticket price for the 12th Istanbul Biennial will be 15 TL for tickets purchased in advance, and 20 TL starting on the opening date, September

17. Primary school and high school students, visitors over the age of 65, teachers, and members of the International Association of Plastic Arts will be able to visit the exhibition for the discount ticket price of 5 TL in advance, and then 8 TL starting on September 17. great importance of sports value and olympic spirit, which we believe play an active role in maintaining peace everywhere in the world,” he said. Istanbul is the world’s only city on two continents that has been a crossroads of trade, culture, learning and art for over 3,000 years as well as the capital of three of the greatest empires the world has known. It is no accident that Istanbul was the city the Eastern Roman

ANKARA

Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans.

Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity

as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.

IZMIR

Izmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. It is Turkey’s first port for exports and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. jointventure established in 1990, is the leader

among the twenty that Turkey counts. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa), and under either larger companies or SME’s, affirm their name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity. Izmir is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism and gender roles.
