Third Bosphorus Bridge unites Europe and Asia

Construction of the Istanbul’s Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge (YSS), which began in May 29, 2013, now unites the Asian and European sides of the Bosporus for the third time, as the last 9-meter segment was installed on March 6. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Transport and Communication Manager Binali Yıldırım and Environment and Urbanism Minister Fatma Güldemet Sarı, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş attended to the ceremony held for the installment of the last bridge deck. Erdoğan, Davutoğlu and Yıldırım made the final weld on the deck. Following the ceremony, Erdoğan drove through the bridge with his official car. May 2015 saw the enclosure of the suspension cables, and a construction record was broken in the last month

with the installation of 10 steel aprons covering a distance of 238 meters. The bridge should open in July or August, along with the surrounding highways. The opening of the bridge was delayed several times last year due to technical complications, but in February, Prime Minister Davutoğlu pledged that the inauguration would take place this summer “barring an extraordinary situation.” “About 88 percent of the project is complete, and both the bridge and the roads connected to it will hopefully be opened as soon as possible,” Davutoğlu said. Thousands of employees and engineers are working nonstop so that the bridge can become operational by August. The bridge is expected to alleviate traffic volume on the existing Bosporus bridges and will help to ensure safe traffic flow in Istanbul. The total length of the bridge is 2,164 meters. The bridge, which stretches 1,408 meters over the Bosporus, has eight lanes of highway and two lanes of railway. It will be the longest suspension bridge in the world that includes a rail system. The height of the tower in the village of Garipçe on the European side is 322 meters and the tower in the Poyrazköy district on the Asian side is 318 meters high. The bridge will have the highest abutments in the world. The rail system crossing the bridge will run from Edirne to İzmit, will be integrated into the Marmaray and Istanbul Metro and will also connect Istanbul Atatürk International Airport, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and the third airport, also currently under construction.

In 2014 he released Türkiye Caz Tarihinde Işıksız Kalanlar (Pieces from Turkish Jazz History That Remained in the Dark), an album that deserves a place in any music archive.

Ergüven Başaran began his adventures in music with training in the clarinet from Tevfik Çelen and Salih Durutaş; he then received alto saxophone training from Celal Bozsay, followed by harmony lessons from Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu. In 1963 he began playing in the Kadri Ünalan orchestra, after which he joined the orchestras of Çetin İnöntepe, Selim Özer, Aydemir Mete, Mete Duruman, Ritim73 and Süheyl Denizci. In 1974 he had planned to go to Europe with Emin Fındıkoğlu but had a last minute change of heart and instead took the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality exam to join the City Orchestra. Participants in the exam were competing for only one position in the orchestra, and Başaran received full points from the jury to receive first place. Having played for many years in the Eurovision Orchestra founded by TRT, in 1975 Başaran began playing with the TRT Radio and Jazz Orchestra under Ümit Aksu. In 1976 he was a member of the 69-piece orchestra that performed at the First International Music Festival. In 1982 he began to play with the TRT Istanbul Jazz Orchestra, founded by Süheyl Denizci, where he remained until 2002. In 1993 he played in the Turkey-Poland mixed jazz orchestra together with prominent musicians such as İmer Demirer and Neşet Ruacan. Başaran played in the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra as a guest musician from 1980-1999, and was also the founder of Istanbul Saxophone Quartet, the first group of its kind in Turkey. He has performed in various Istanbul Jazz Festival events with the Istanbul Saxophone Quartet and with his latest project Swing UNLTD. During his musical career he has played at the concerts of many Turkish pop divas, including Ajda Pekkan, Nilüfer, Nil Burak and Nazan Şoray.

Painting Museum R eopened in a newly renovated space in the Crown Prince’s apartments of Dolmabahçe Palace, the National Palaces Painting Museum showcases the collection of paintings of the national palaces.
Dolmabahçe Palace, the grand palace in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, once the residence of crown princes during the last periods of the Ottoman Empire, the reign of Sultan Abdulmecid, now hosts the National Palaces Painting Museum.

April’2016 MeeTurkey

The palace, after undergoing a seven-year restoration, is now the only one in Turkey dedicated to “Late Ottoman Life” in the 19th century. the Painting Museum spans two floors and is divided into 11 sections, with the first devoted to the last sultans of the Ottoman Empire, Abdülmecid and Abdülaziz. The second section is named “Westernization in the Ottoman Empire” and it depicts the changes the society underwent, including the military reforms observed from the beginning of the 18th century.

The section was the library of Abdülmecid and contains paintings of Istanbul by local and foreign artists. “In the Turkish painters section, there are paintings by the second and third generation of Westernized Turkish artists,” said Gülşen Kaya, the art historian and curator of the museum.

She further added that there are 202 paintings, 28 of which were borrowed from Topkapı Palace and the remaining 174 were brought from the National Palaces Painting Collection.

Further, portraits of sultans Abdulmecid and Abdulaziz are also on display depicting a new era in the Ottoman

Empire as they immortalized themselves in paint, copying European rulers of that time. Kaya noted that the exhibition will offer the chance for visitors to learn how the Westernization process during the Ottoman reign started, how military reforms at the time affected social and daily life and about the development of Turkish painting.

ANKARA

Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the

capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.
